00:00:00.000 Do you end up doing time?
00:00:01.080 Yeah, I did 23 months.
00:00:02.660 You did 23 months.
00:00:03.460 And where were you at?
00:00:04.440 I was at the Federal Correctional Institution at Loretto, Pennsylvania.
00:00:07.660 Who else is in that facility?
00:00:10.440 Who is getting arrested there?
00:00:11.900 Who's doing time there?
00:00:12.640 A third of the prisoners are pedophiles.
00:00:15.080 Okay.
00:00:17.000 Mafia, dons, there were a lot of mob guys.
00:00:19.980 A third of the people there are pedophiles?
00:00:22.140 Pedophiles.
00:00:23.020 So why would they put you there with...
00:00:25.380 Ah, I'm glad you asked me that question.
00:00:28.100 And I swear, we didn't plant the question.
00:00:32.300 At my sentencing, my attorneys asked the judge to put me in a minimum security work camp.
00:00:38.260 Okay, there are no bars on the windows.
00:00:40.300 The doors are unlocked.
00:00:41.440 You're free to come and go as you please.
00:00:42.860 You're just on your honor not to run away.
00:00:44.960 And most of those guys work at a...
00:00:47.220 There's a university in the town, the little village nearby,
00:00:51.140 and you sweep the floors or whatever.
00:00:52.920 The judge says to the prosecutors, any objection?
00:00:55.340 They said, no objection.
00:00:56.240 She says, okay, minimum security work camp.
00:00:59.660 Well, the strange thing in our system is if you're sentenced to prison
00:01:03.340 and you're free until the date of your incarceration,
00:01:09.260 you physically drive to the prison and knock on the door and say,
00:01:13.700 I'm here to turn myself in.
00:01:15.480 It's weird, right?
00:01:16.880 So I got up that morning and a couple of my lawyers, my cousin and his son,
00:01:23.720 a documentary film crew, we drive to the prison and I go to the camp,
00:01:29.140 minimum security camp, and I knock on the door and I said,
00:01:32.200 I'm John Kiriakou.
00:01:33.120 I'm here to turn myself in.
00:01:34.280 They said, oh, you have to go across the street to the actual prison.
00:01:37.660 They'll process you and then they'll just bring you back over here.
00:01:40.780 So I go across the street to the prison and I said, I'm here to turn myself in.
00:01:47.060 The guy says, okay.
00:01:48.200 They put me through a metal detector.
00:01:49.880 And then he starts to lead me around to the back of the actual prison.
00:01:54.980 And I said, wait a minute.
00:01:57.020 I'm supposed to be at the camp across the street.
00:02:00.020 And he goes, not according to my paperwork, you're not.
00:02:03.920 Wow.
00:02:04.620 And I told myself, take it easy.
00:02:07.020 There's nothing you can do.
00:02:09.080 They'll put you in solitary if you say anything.
00:02:11.480 So I didn't say a word.
00:02:13.940 It took me about 45 minutes to get processed.
00:02:18.280 And then they put me in a cell, like an actual cell.
00:02:21.380 It was a four man cell, but they squeezed six guys in there because of overcrowding.
00:02:25.560 It took me four or five days before I got access to a phone.
00:02:30.020 To call your lawyer.
00:02:31.040 I called my lawyer and I said, hey, they put me in the actual prison with the mafia kingpins
00:02:36.760 and the Mexican drug cartel guys and the pedophiles.
00:02:41.140 What do I do?
00:02:42.620 And he said, oh my God.
00:02:44.000 He said, well, we can make a motion, but it'll be two years before we have a court date.
00:02:50.600 He said, buddy, I'm sorry.
00:02:51.800 You're going to have to tough it out.
00:02:53.180 Get out of here.
00:02:54.420 23 months, two years.
00:02:55.900 And I told myself, you've lived in far worse places than this.
00:02:59.040 Are you married at this time or no?
00:03:00.480 What is your wife doing?
00:03:01.380 Because I know your wife was also in the CIA.
00:03:03.020 Yes.
00:03:03.380 She was fired from the CIA on the day of my arrest just because she was married to me.
00:03:08.740 No other reason.
00:03:09.620 Yeah.
00:03:10.480 And is that common etiquette because married or worried you're going to get?
00:03:14.100 Unprecedented.
00:03:14.900 Well, because Jonah Mendes and Tony Mendes were in it together and they were married for 28 years or something like that.
00:03:19.620 The CIA encourages agency romances because you're both cleared so you can talk about work.
00:03:25.380 We used to have this joke at the agency that we-
00:03:27.740 Marry another CIA.
00:03:28.760 Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:03:29.340 Everybody's married.
00:03:30.300 We had this joke at the CIA that when you go into a meeting, don't touch the conference room table because you don't know who was having sex on it last night.
00:03:37.200 No.
00:03:37.780 Seriously?
00:03:38.340 Yeah, yeah.
00:03:38.720 Because they're married and they're just-
00:03:40.900 Oh, yeah.
00:03:41.660 Wow.
00:03:42.020 I worked for a deputy director of the CIA who had been married three times and all three of his wives had been his secretary.
00:03:48.500 All three of his wives had been his secretary.
00:03:51.260 So the place smells like Bedoucy.
00:03:52.740 It's just a terrible-
00:03:53.360 Yeah.
00:03:53.700 Wow.
00:03:54.300 Yeah.
00:03:54.500 It's not good.
00:03:55.060 Some people like that.
00:03:55.800 And that's why you've got a 75% divorce rate.
00:03:58.740 Wow.
00:03:59.000 Because they're all banging each other.
00:04:00.420 No, I mean, okay.
00:04:01.560 So, and are they banging each other and like dropping intel?
00:04:04.660 You don't even know what I learned yesterday.
00:04:06.500 Ooh, tell me.
00:04:07.640 Sometimes, yeah.
00:04:07.880 That's pretty nasty.
00:04:08.460 And then they'll ask you about that on the polygraph.
00:04:11.080 Yeah.
00:04:12.080 Interesting.
00:04:12.740 So, okay.
00:04:13.820 So now you're going through things.
00:04:16.320 Any famous people you were in there that we would know about?
00:04:18.680 Any bosses that we would know about?
00:04:20.960 Yeah, the boss of the Gambinos was there.
00:04:23.260 Which one?
00:04:24.500 Little Nicky Carrozzo.
00:04:25.860 Okay.
00:04:27.060 And the number three in the Bananos.
00:04:30.220 And you're hanging out with them?
00:04:31.480 Yeah.
00:04:31.700 In fact, the Italians adopted me.
00:04:35.340 So I was with the Italians the whole time I was there.
00:04:38.700 And did they know what your background is?
00:04:41.200 Oh, yeah.
00:04:41.520 They all know.
00:04:42.260 Oh, yeah.
00:04:42.560 They all know.
00:04:42.820 And how did they treat you?
00:04:43.280 And I'm still friends with all of them.
00:04:44.920 Did they treat you as a, were they afraid of you?
00:04:49.000 Did they respect you?
00:04:49.920 Did they hate you?
00:04:50.700 Did they want to kill you?
00:04:51.580 It was all respect.
00:04:52.480 And I owe the easy time that I had there.
00:04:56.820 I owe to Mark Lanzalotti.
00:04:59.700 So Mark was from Philadelphia.
00:05:02.840 With Scarfo and those guys?
00:05:04.220 Exactly.
00:05:04.460 And then he saw in the New York Times an article saying that I was coming to that prison.
00:05:12.240 And God bless him.
00:05:13.780 On his own volition, he went to every one of the Italians to explain to them, this CIA guy
00:05:19.660 is coming.
00:05:20.520 He's not a cop.
00:05:22.960 The FBI are cops.
00:05:25.180 The CIA protect us from the Muslims.
00:05:27.820 That's what he told them.
00:05:29.580 And so when I arrived, they had been told, I hate the FBI as much as they do.
00:05:35.360 And so we were all one big happy family.
