Valuetainment - “The Best Male Role Models Are Invisible” - Scott Galloway CALLS OUT Modern Masculinity Myths

00:00:00.000 Wolters Kluwer knows the accountant's dinner all too well.

00:00:04.180 Lukewarm coffee, cold takeout, and endless manual data entry.

00:00:10.200 It's time to change the menu with a tax workflow that actually flows.

00:00:17.060 CCH iFirm by Wolters Kluwer is built to help you work smarter, file faster, and head home on time.

00:00:24.420 Visit shoptax.wolterskluwer.com to learn more.

00:00:30.000 And I want to go a little bit deeper into it because I want to see what you're going to be saying about this because you went into politics.

00:00:35.420 You said, you know, the numbers that we saw, young men shifted 18 points towards Trump in four years.

00:00:41.760 And when you look at these numbers, it's not like they were sold on Trump, the article says.

00:00:46.760 They felt alienated by Democrats.

00:00:49.240 But a part of it also, if you think about it, I'm sure you remember the late Charlie Kirk, he played a very big role in talking about family, kids, faith.

00:00:57.840 And these 16, 17, 18-year-olds are looking at saying, who would be my role model?

00:01:02.800 So for you, I think you are a role model for young men.

00:01:06.820 But if I was to ask you right now, Scott, who would you say is a young liberal role model for young men?

00:01:13.580 Who would that be?

00:01:16.180 Oh, I don't know.

00:01:17.100 I think they're everywhere.

00:01:20.080 Representative Tallarico, a man who appreciates faith and family, but also what are traditionally seen as progressive values.

00:01:27.840 I think there's symbols of good masculinity everywhere.

00:01:31.500 You know, weird one.

00:01:32.660 Chris Christopherson just passed away.

00:01:34.080 Army captain, road scholar, a poet, a great rock star, was known for being generous, married for 40 years, helicopter pilot.

00:01:44.640 But more than anything, the roles of masculinity are next door. 0.85

00:01:48.380 It's the guy who wakes up every morning who didn't dream of being a mechanic, but every goddamn day gets up at, oh, dark 100 hours because he wants to support his family. 0.57

00:01:56.820 and he takes a lot of blows and he just kind of toils away in relative anonymity, but is very 0.97

00:02:04.360 loyal to his wife, loyal to his kids, works hard, tries to stay in good shape, be a good citizen.

00:02:12.280 You know, I think there's examples of masculinity everywhere. I think we lack, generally speaking,

00:02:19.900 good public role models across both aisles. But where I find great examples of masculinity 0.59

00:02:27.000 is in everyday men who are loyal, who are very patriotic, maybe have served,

00:02:35.420 and find themselves trying to serve in the agency of other people and see their purpose as raising,

00:02:42.400 you know, you have four kids. I don't know for you, what happened to me, I was very selfish

00:02:47.700 for most of my life, and I finally found my purpose. My purpose is to raise loving, patriotic

00:02:52.100 men. But I think there's examples of masculinity everywhere, but I would agree that there is a

00:02:58.340 dearth of what I'll call public figures that demonstrate an aspirational form of masculinity.

00:03:05.480 That's interesting when you're saying that. I guess my question, the follow-up question for

00:03:09.360 this would be Jonathan Hyde, which I think you and him are either colleagues or friends,

00:03:15.320 but you know, he wrote the book, Anxious Generation, right. And I love that book. Anywhere I go,

00:03:19.660 I recommend every parent to read that book. We were a couple of years ago. I don't know when

00:03:23.920 it was when it came out, probably two years ago or so. What's the timeline? Yeah. Two years ago

00:03:28.200 when it came out, exactly March, two years ago when it came out, I had everybody read it. And

00:03:31.980 one of the interviews he did, I'm curious to know your thoughts. The interviewer is asking him a

00:03:36.640 question and he's talking about how much anxiety young girls have, right? And he asked, he says,

00:03:43.520 So which philosophies raise more peaceful kids and which one raises kids with higher anxiety, liberal parents or conservative parents?

00:03:54.840 Without hesitation, Scott, he says conservative parents.

00:03:58.760 And then he says, so then why are you a liberal?

00:04:00.680 And he says, because I'm academia.

00:04:02.080 I can't change my philosophy.

00:04:03.280 So the guy's integrity, the way he answered, I respect the hell out of him.

00:04:06.560 Why do you think even he says that conservatives raise more calm, lower anxiety kids than liberals do?

00:04:16.680 You know, it's a good question. I'm not sure I have a good answer for it.

00:04:25.060 The two primary drivers, according to Jonathan and Gene Twenge, who did breakthrough research on this.

00:04:33.860 And by the way, Jonathan's a friend and a scholar.

00:04:36.560 he's probably the most consequential scholar in the world. And, you know, there's entire

00:04:40.760 countries banning phones in schools because of Jonathan's work. But generally speaking,

00:04:45.700 the two drivers they think of an increase in anxiety amongst our children are one,

00:04:52.060 some of it is our fault when I say I mean parents, and that is what you call concierge or

00:04:56.160 bulldozer parenting. And that is we use so many sanitary wipes on their lives that they don't 1.00

00:05:01.240 develop their own immunities. And I struggle with this. I keep wanting to save my kids from

00:05:05.780 themselves and every, you know, I know my more rational self goes, let them fail, let them fall

00:05:12.340 down. Otherwise they're never going to learn to pick themselves up. Now, if you wanted to, if you

00:05:16.260 were looking for a thesis, you could argue that maybe progressive parents make too many excuses

00:05:19.960 for the kids and think they're loving them and being more understanding as opposed to being more

00:05:24.660 kind of trad dads or letting them fail, if you will. Because what we see at NYU is we've seen

00:05:32.080 an increase in self-harm because a lot of kids get there and it's sort of a princess in the

00:05:37.420 peace syndrome where they haven't faced much adversity. Their parents have cleared out every

00:05:42.320 obstacle and then they get there and they get their heart broken or their first D and they

00:05:45.520 literally freak out because they haven't known any failure up until that point. So I guess the

00:05:49.500 argument, if you were trying to bridge it, would be maybe more progressive parents in an effort to

00:05:53.640 do what they think is right end up overprotecting their children and not preparing them for the real

00:05:58.880 world. The second thing that appears to have driven anxiety is about the time social went on

00:06:04.880 mobile about 15 years ago, you saw a spike in depression and anxiety, especially among

00:06:10.200 young girls. And the reality is we are every day up against this indomitable foe of the deepest

00:06:17.520 pocketed, most talented organizations in history that are all trying to do one thing. And that is

00:06:22.720 sequester you from the most meaningful thing in your life, and that is relationships. And young

00:06:28.020 men seem especially susceptible to believing that they can have a reasonable facsimile of life

00:06:32.900 on a screen with an algorithm. Why go through the pecking order of friends when you can have

00:06:38.160 discord and Reddit? Why put on a tie, try and navigate the corporate world, which is difficult

00:06:43.280 and hard when you think you can make money trading crypto or stocks on Coinbase or Robinhood? And why

00:06:49.120 on earth would you go through the pain, perseverance, rejection, showering, working out,

00:06:56.180 the expense, the resilience of trying to find a romantic or a sexual partner when you have

00:07:02.340 lifelike porn. So I think big tech plays a bigger role than progressive versus conservative parents.

00:07:11.160 But I can see, you know, I trust Jonathan. One of the things I love about Jonathan,

00:07:16.120 I would consider myself center left. I think Jonathan doesn't like to talk about politics,

00:07:19.480 but I would consider him center right. But he has incredible fidelity to the data. So if he says

00:07:24.460 that, in general, conservative families are raising less anxious kids.

00:07:27.700 I'm inclined to take them at his word.

00:07:30.920 Yeah, and I think both of you guys are fair in where you're at.

00:07:34.260 So I think the two voices, center left, center right,

00:07:36.600 there's at least reason in there when you're having conversations.

00:07:39.320 When it's the far left or the far right,

00:07:41.120 that's when you're going to have some issues there

00:07:43.220 that kind of pushes everybody away.

00:07:45.500 When we set out to create a shoe that blends comfort, function, and luxury,

00:07:51.120 we had the choice to make it fast.

00:07:53.020 We had the choice to make it cheap.

00:07:55.600 We chose neither.

00:07:57.080 Instead, we chose Tuscaneiro.

00:07:59.400 We chose true Italian craftsmanship, each pair touched by 50 skilled hands.

00:08:04.820 We chose patience, spending two years perfecting every detail,

00:08:08.720 and we chose the finest quality at every step,

00:08:12.220 introducing the Future Looks Bright collection.

00:08:15.940 Not rushed, not disposable, not ordinary.

00:08:19.520 rather intentional, luxurious, timeless.
