00:00:00.200 So I'm reading a book, No Rules Rules, which is a story on Netflix.
00:00:03.520 Reed Hastings is talking about how Netflix is with his co-author. 0.93
00:00:07.080 Just a ridiculous book. 0.90
00:00:08.080 I highly recommend. 0.92
00:00:09.080 And there's a part in this book where Reed tells a story when one of their supervisors,
00:00:15.800 one of their leaders, Ted Sarandas, who is now the co-CEO of Netflix as of July of 2020,
00:00:20.240 I believe, he at that time comes to Reed with a show they picked with Sandra Bullock being
00:00:27.000 in it, is called, I believe, Bird Box, right?
00:00:30.820 And so they're all like, okay, I don't know how Bird Box is going to do, Reed doesn't know,
00:00:34.500 but Ted is the one that was responsible for picking that this is what we're going to do,
00:00:38.900 and we're going to make the investment for something called Bird Box, and we're hoping
00:00:42.620 this is going to do great.
00:00:44.240 And Reed is like, ah, I'm kind of indifferent about it.
00:00:46.240 Well, long story short, Bird Box comes out and it doesn't do well.
00:00:50.940 They don't get five million of their subscribers watching this.
00:00:54.040 Not 10 million, not 20 million, 45 million in the first week of all Netflix subscribers
00:01:01.040 watched the whole thing.
00:01:02.540 80 million within four weeks becomes a massive hit, and they get a bunch of new subscribers
00:01:08.860 because people want to watch this show called Bird Box, right?
00:01:12.800 So there's a scene where Reed goes up to Ted to tell Ted congratulations.
00:01:19.040 Ted says on what?
00:01:21.040 He said, I want to congratulate you for picking Bird Box.
00:01:24.740 And Ted's like, oh, cool, thanks.
00:01:26.860 He says, well, congratulations to you as well.
00:01:29.200 He says, congratulations to me for what?
00:01:31.540 He said, for picking me.
00:01:32.540 He said, I don't understand, what do you mean picking me?
00:01:34.900 He said, you had a lot of other people to hire, but you picked me.
00:01:38.220 And also, I picked Jackie, and Jackie picked XYZ, and through them is how we found Bird Box.
00:01:45.040 So guess what, Reed?
00:01:46.040 He says, what?
00:01:46.740 We all picked well.
00:01:47.740 And he sat there, Reed, saying, how interesting is this that in life everything's about picking
00:01:53.860 the right everything, picking the right opportunity, picking the right person you hire.
00:01:59.740 Being a great CEO isn't about how smart and brilliant you are.
00:02:03.740 It's you're picking the right people around you.
00:02:05.860 You're picking the right technology.
00:02:08.280 You're picking the right time to invest.
00:02:09.980 You're picking the right time to go raise capital.
00:02:12.220 You're picking the right time, one, to expand.
00:02:14.480 You're picking the right states to go into.
00:02:16.860 You're picking the right countries to expand.
00:02:18.800 Everything is about picking.
00:02:21.380 And if you pick accordingly, like if you look at you right now, wherever I was at 25 years
00:02:26.360 old is because of what I picked.
00:02:28.200 I picked my friends at that time.
00:02:30.260 I picked the businesses at that time.
00:02:32.260 I picked the investments at that time.
00:02:34.900 Everything with my life where I was at at 22, 23 years old was based on my choices and
00:02:38.860 who I picked.
00:02:40.060 As life advanced, I made better choices.
00:02:43.120 So if you're watching this right now saying, well, Pat, how does this apply to me?
00:02:47.060 Every aspect of your life.
00:02:48.060 Who'd you pick as a spouse? 1.00
00:02:49.560 Who'd you pick as a boyfriend, girlfriend? 1.00
00:02:51.240 Who'd you pick as a running mate? 1.00
00:02:52.820 What did you pick as an industry?
00:02:54.480 What company did you pick to want to be a part of?
00:02:57.500 Who are you reporting to?
00:02:58.900 What boss did you pick?
00:03:00.800 Everything there is about picking.
00:03:02.400 The better you pick and the better a company does, it's a byproduct of a lot of good picks.
00:03:07.520 Just like in draft, when you go into, you know, the NBA draft is going on last week.
00:03:11.420 When you look at the NBA draft, it's who you pick.
00:03:13.760 There's a lot of flops in the history of the NBA.
00:03:16.060 A lot of them.
00:03:17.060 There are a lot of flops.
00:03:18.060 The biggest flop of all time is the one name everybody talks about, is Sam Bowie.
00:03:22.520 The Portland Trailblazers in 1984 with their second pick chose Sam Bowie.
00:03:26.240 You know who the third pick was?
00:03:27.480 Michael Jordan.
00:03:28.620 Can you imagine being the Portland Trailblazers for picking Sam Bowie?
00:03:33.360 And Sam Bowie for the rest of his life has to be known as the guy who went ahead of who?
00:03:36.420 Michael Jordan.
00:03:37.420 Chicago ended up becoming the team because the owners picked Jordan.
00:03:41.540 Trailblazers didn't win championships because they didn't pick up Olajuwon or Jordan. 0.89
00:03:45.360 FYI.
00:03:46.360 Olajuwon and Jordan.
00:03:47.360 Olajuwon won two championships.
00:03:49.360 Jordan won six championships.
00:03:51.360 Sam Bowie didn't win any championships.
