00:03:09.920 They are the worst this country has seen

00:03:12.320 The price of gas, up.
00:03:14.020 Price of housing, up.
00:03:15.380 The U.S. national debt, way up.
00:03:17.860 And with our current administration printing
00:03:19.480 and spending trillions of dollars,
00:03:21.620 experts don't see it getting better anytime soon.

00:04:14.300 Welcome back to Verdict with Ted Cruz.
00:04:16.100 I am Michael Knowles.
00:04:17.800 Senator, we often joke and say,
00:04:20.260 I hate to say I told you so,
00:04:21.280 and then we talk about things
00:04:22.100 that we predicted on this show
00:04:23.400 for weeks and weeks and months and months.
00:04:25.120 I think this would be an example
00:04:26.840 of actually hating to say we told you so.
00:04:30.460 You have been on this issue of Russia's aggression,
00:04:33.580 specifically with regard to Ukraine,
00:04:35.520 specifically with regard to the issue,
00:04:37.080 for instance, of Nord Stream 2 for months,
00:04:39.560 really for years at this point.
00:04:41.520 And things are playing out
00:04:42.940 basically exactly as you said they would.
00:04:46.280 Well, tragically, that's right.
00:04:47.980 I mean, we are at the outset of war in Europe.
00:04:51.540 You know, a couple of weeks ago,
00:04:52.500 we had a classified briefing
00:04:53.760 with the Secretary of State.
00:04:55.120 Secretary of Defense
00:04:56.040 and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs,
00:04:58.040 where in the judgment of our military,
00:05:00.660 Europe is in the most perilous situation
00:05:02.480 since 1945.
00:05:04.680 It is, we are facing,
00:05:08.380 the Russian Duma has authorized Putin
00:05:11.960 to invade Ukraine.
00:05:13.880 Ukraine is, Putin in turn,
00:05:16.040 has given the order to invade Ukraine.
00:05:18.060 And there's a cause and effect.
00:05:20.840 The direct cause of war in Europe is Joe Biden
00:05:25.520 and Joe Biden's weakness twofold.
00:05:28.560 Number one, Afghanistan.
00:05:30.040 And we've talked on this pod a lot
00:05:32.180 about the disaster that was the Afghan retreat,
00:05:36.420 the Afghan surrender,
00:05:37.700 surrendering Afghanistan to the Taliban,
00:05:39.780 leaving Americans behind,
00:05:41.060 the weakness,
00:05:41.980 the weakness,
00:05:42.940 the chaos.
00:05:43.980 And unfortunately,
00:05:45.980 every enemy of America
00:05:47.440 took a measure of the man in the Oval Office
00:05:49.740 when that happened.
00:05:50.480 They took a measure of Joe Biden.
00:05:51.980 And they determined that Biden was weak
00:05:54.160 and feckless and ineffective.
00:05:55.400 And as you'll recall,
00:05:58.040 on this podcast and publicly,
00:05:59.440 I said multiple times
00:06:00.980 when that disastrous withdrawal
00:06:02.940 of Afghanistan happened
00:06:04.860 that the odds of Russia invading Ukraine
00:06:07.620 had increased tenfold.
00:06:09.760 And also the odds of China invading Taiwan
00:06:12.080 had increased tenfold.
00:06:13.660 We're seeing the first of those two shoes drop.
00:06:15.940 Right now, I am very concerned
00:06:18.440 we'll see the second of those shoes drop
00:06:20.140 in the coming months.
00:06:21.900 But let's focus on Russia and Ukraine right now.
00:06:24.340 So Biden's weakness,
00:06:26.520 overall weakness,
00:06:27.420 was a major factor.
00:06:28.800 But then secondly,
00:06:30.860 specifically Biden's waiver
00:06:32.900 of sanctions on Nord Stream 2
00:06:34.860 is what facilitated this invasion.
00:06:38.480 You know, at that briefing,
00:06:39.500 it was one Democratic senator
00:06:40.860 stood up and asked,
00:06:42.280 why didn't Putin invade Ukraine in 2017?
00:06:45.940 Why didn't Putin invade Ukraine in 2018
00:06:48.220 or 2019 or 2020?
00:06:50.000 I have to admit,
00:06:50.920 I and a number of other senators
00:06:52.180 just began laughing.
00:06:53.120 Uh, because it's,
00:06:55.320 and the bizarre thing is
00:06:56.320 this Democrat didn't seem to realize,
00:06:59.200 um, didn't seem to get the joke.
00:07:02.200 And the answer is simple.
00:07:03.840 Putin didn't do it
00:07:04.900 because he feared President Trump.
00:07:06.740 He feared a strong president
00:07:08.020 who would stand up to him.
00:07:09.720 And by the way,
00:07:10.680 stand up to him doesn't mean send in troops.
00:07:13.700 That's one of the frustrating things
00:07:15.220 about how this is discussed
00:07:17.320 is sometimes the media says,
00:07:18.900 well, gosh, you know,
00:07:19.800 we don't want to go to war with Russia.
00:07:22.700 That's exactly right.
00:07:24.000 Only a lunatic would want American troops
00:07:26.520 to be in a shooting war with Russia.
00:07:29.260 But there are all sorts of tools
00:07:31.240 that America has short of sending the Marines
00:07:35.020 that constrain Russian aggression.
00:07:37.680 And the most effective
00:07:39.120 when it comes to stopping
00:07:40.380 the invasion of Ukraine,
00:07:42.140 uh, was the sanctions
00:07:44.340 on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline
00:07:45.920 that I authored,
00:07:46.840 that I passed
00:07:47.540 with overwhelming bipartisan majorities
00:07:49.840 that Trump signed into law.
00:07:52.300 And, and Putin literally
00:07:54.240 stopped constructing that pipeline
00:07:56.100 the day that Trump signed
00:07:57.780 my sanctions legislation into law.
00:07:59.740 He began building it again,
00:08:02.320 January 24th of 2021,
00:08:04.680 four days after Biden came into power.
00:08:06.780 Why?
00:08:07.120 Because Biden projected weakness
00:08:08.660 and that weakness manifested
00:08:10.960 last summer when Biden
00:08:12.740 formally waived the sanctions
00:08:14.620 on Nord Stream 2.
00:08:15.980 And, and the reason it matters,
00:08:17.340 you might be sitting here
00:08:18.120 and regular folks,
00:08:19.520 regular listeners of this podcast
00:08:20.680 will know,
00:08:21.560 but you might wonder,
00:08:22.660 well, what does a pipeline
00:08:23.560 have to do with Ukraine?
00:08:24.780 Well, the problem is
00:08:25.540 Russia's main export
00:08:26.760 is natural gas and oil.
00:08:28.960 And the natural gas goes on pipelines
00:08:30.700 right through Ukraine.
00:08:31.980 If they invade Ukraine,
00:08:33.440 they risk destroying
00:08:34.640 or damaging that infrastructure.
00:08:36.720 That's why they want to build
00:08:37.820 Nord Stream 2
00:08:38.440 to go around Ukraine.
00:08:39.740 Right.
00:08:40.040 So they can invade
00:08:41.220 and Biden has let Putin do that,
00:08:44.860 which is why Russian tanks
00:08:47.560 and Russian soldiers
00:08:48.540 are on the borders
00:08:50.580 and in the process
00:08:51.680 of invading as we speak.
00:08:53.460 And Putin is entirely reliant
00:08:55.040 on exporting energy.
00:08:56.500 So the pipeline really matters.
00:08:58.080 This brings up two points, actually.
00:09:00.240 One, as you've just pointed out,
00:09:01.800 there's a real irony
00:09:02.680 that Trump, who we were told,
00:09:04.480 was basically a KGB stooge.
00:09:06.820 It was like Boris and Natasha
00:09:08.560 and Trump in Rocky and Bullwinkle.
00:09:11.740 Donald Trump is now
00:09:12.800 the only president
00:09:13.860 among the last four presidents
00:09:16.020 on whose watch Vladimir Putin
00:09:17.800 has not invaded a sovereign country.
00:09:20.220 During George W. Bush,
00:09:21.580 he invaded Georgia
00:09:22.940 and Bush repelled that.
00:09:24.340 Obama, he invades Crimea.
00:09:26.140 Trump, he basically
00:09:27.060 just leaves things as they are.
00:09:28.600 And then under Biden,
00:09:29.860 now he's going even further.
00:09:31.520 But then this raises this question,
00:09:33.620 which is,
00:09:34.160 forgive me,
00:09:36.300 I am just
00:09:37.080 being the devil's advocate here.
00:09:40.100 Does Vladimir Putin
00:09:41.700 have a point?
00:09:43.460 He made his grand speech
00:09:45.660 giving the pretext
00:09:46.920 for war in Ukraine.
00:09:48.140 And he made a ton
00:09:49.160 of historical claims,
00:09:51.220 a ton of political claims.
00:09:52.940 He made a ton
00:09:53.560 of security claims
00:09:54.500 about Russia.
00:09:55.200 Those were basically
00:09:55.800 the three facets
00:09:56.660 of the speech.
00:09:57.820 And it is mind-boggling
00:10:00.260 that this two-bit leader
00:10:02.300 of a backwater
00:10:04.200 former superpower
00:10:05.280 that is now
00:10:06.020 just a petrol state
00:10:06.960 that's just basically
00:10:07.900 surviving on whether
00:10:09.100 gas and energy prices
00:10:10.420 are above a certain threshold,
00:10:12.180 that this guy
00:10:13.160 is basically eating
00:10:14.700 our lunch right now
00:10:15.840 here in the West.
00:10:16.660 How is he doing it?
00:10:18.900 Well, he's doing it
00:10:20.500 because of
00:10:22.120 presidential weakness.
00:10:23.240 He's doing it
00:10:24.000 because Biden
00:10:24.900 is scared
00:10:25.980 to stand up to him.
00:10:27.240 And look,
00:10:27.900 Putin senses weakness
00:10:29.100 and he's a bully.
00:10:30.660 He is a KGB thug.
00:10:32.240 You know,
00:10:32.400 the speech he gave,
00:10:34.120 it's an hour-long speech
00:10:35.400 and I have to say
00:10:36.760 it's ominous.
00:10:37.480 I've read it
00:10:38.180 front to back twice.
00:10:40.720 It is a speech
00:10:42.040 worth examining closely
00:10:43.860 because it lays out
00:10:45.180 precisely what
00:10:46.020 his ambitions are.
00:10:47.480 You know,
00:10:47.640 we've talked on the pod
00:10:48.620 before about how
00:10:49.460 Putin has been
00:10:50.120 very candid
00:10:50.780 saying that he
00:10:52.340 considers the dissolution
00:10:53.880 of the Soviet Union
00:10:55.000 to be the greatest
00:10:56.680 geopolitical disaster
00:10:58.180 of the 20th century.
00:11:00.360 This speech
00:11:01.200 goes bolder than that.
00:11:02.280 He actually goes back
00:11:03.420 even prior to the Soviet Union
00:11:05.200 to the Russian Empire
00:11:06.540 of 1922.
00:11:08.240 He goes back a century
00:11:09.080 and it's amazing.
00:11:11.580 He walks through
00:11:12.420 and there's an enormous
00:11:13.320 amount of revisionist history
00:11:14.560 in this speech.
00:11:16.020 But look,
00:11:16.640 you have to give,
00:11:18.360 Russian propagandists
00:11:19.780 are very good
00:11:20.720 at what they do.
00:11:22.120 This is a meticulously
00:11:23.140 researched speech.
00:11:24.440 It is an alternative
00:11:25.500 history of the world.
00:11:27.280 But under the alternative
00:11:28.540 history of the world,
00:11:29.340 it's actually quite amazing.
00:11:31.180 Putin lays out
00:11:32.120 that he thinks
00:11:32.840 that Lenin and Stalin's,
00:11:35.000 Stalin are squishes.
00:11:36.560 They're too soft.
00:11:37.840 They're too general.
00:11:39.340 They allowed
00:11:40.180 too much freedom.
00:11:41.800 You know,
00:11:41.940 it's really quite,
00:11:42.720 quite stunning.
00:11:43.620 And going through it,
00:11:45.180 he talks about
00:11:46.840 he talks about
00:11:49.100 the Bolsheviks
00:11:50.600 who,
00:11:52.820 you know,
00:11:53.300 he says,
00:11:53.760 why was it necessary
00:11:54.720 to appease the nationalists
00:11:56.260 to satisfy
00:11:56.980 the ceaselessly growing
00:11:58.420 nationalist ambitions
00:11:59.440 on the outskirts
00:12:00.420 of the foreign empire?
00:12:02.680 And he goes on to say,
00:12:03.640 at first glance,
00:12:04.920 this looks absolutely
00:12:06.580 incomprehensible,
00:12:07.580 even crazy.
00:12:09.420 But you have to understand,
00:12:11.060 after the revolution,
00:12:12.000 the Bolsheviks' main goal
00:12:13.160 was to stay in power
00:12:14.280 at all costs.
00:12:17.540 Lenin's principles
00:12:18.560 of state development
00:12:20.500 were not just a mistake.
00:12:22.620 They were worse
00:12:23.460 than a mistake.
00:12:24.800 And this became
00:12:25.900 patently clear
00:12:26.780 after the dissolution
00:12:27.820 of the Soviet Union
00:12:28.720 in 1991.
00:12:29.800 So he goes on to say,
00:12:31.800 the Bolsheviks,
00:12:34.080 Lenin and Stalin
00:12:35.020 afterwards,
00:12:35.700 who he said
00:12:36.020 was implementing
00:12:36.600 Lenin's principles,
00:12:38.040 allowed too much freedom.
00:12:40.140 Right.
00:12:40.260 He said Stalin
00:12:40.780 was a little bit better.
00:12:42.360 Right.
00:12:42.540 He said,
00:12:42.760 Lenin was terrible
00:12:43.860 and a big squish.
00:12:44.980 Stalin was a little bit better,
00:12:46.320 but he didn't change
00:12:47.200 the philosophy enough.
00:12:49.160 Exactly.
00:12:49.520 So now Putin
00:12:50.520 wants to go further
00:12:51.360 than Stalin.
00:12:52.140 He wants to go further
00:12:52.980 than Stalin.
00:12:53.700 He wants to go further
00:12:54.480 than Lenin.
00:12:55.960 And he wants to,
00:12:57.380 look,
00:12:57.720 I got to tell you,
00:12:58.240 in Europe,
00:12:59.580 people are freaking out
00:13:00.880 about this speech.
00:13:02.200 And they're freaking out
00:13:03.740 that these are the rantings
00:13:04.980 of a madman.
00:13:06.040 And it's,
00:13:07.660 he wants,
00:13:09.060 Putin wants
00:13:09.960 to reassemble
00:13:11.000 the Soviet Union,
00:13:12.040 to reassemble
00:13:12.840 the Russian Empire.
00:13:14.380 He longs
00:13:15.820 for glory.
00:13:17.520 He longs for power.
00:13:19.000 When he looks
00:13:19.560 at Russia today,
00:13:20.960 he misses
00:13:22.700 that Russia
00:13:23.420 is no longer
00:13:24.080 a superpower.
00:13:25.020 You know,
00:13:25.320 one of my favorite
00:13:26.040 phrases for Russia
00:13:27.040 is what John McCain
00:13:28.360 used to call them,
00:13:29.700 a gas station
00:13:30.760 with a country attached.
00:13:33.420 That really is the case.
00:13:34.820 They don't have
00:13:35.280 the economic might,
00:13:36.140 but what they do have
00:13:37.360 is they have
00:13:38.940 a military,
00:13:40.300 they have nuclear weapons,
00:13:41.800 and they use
00:13:42.940 the revenue
00:13:43.820 from Putin's
00:13:44.660 being a petro tyrant
00:13:46.840 to fund their military
00:13:49.020 and to threaten
00:13:49.720 their neighbors.
00:13:50.600 And listen,
00:13:51.740 what Putin lays out
00:13:53.780 in this speech
00:13:54.500 is a justification
00:13:56.220 for invading Ukraine,
00:13:57.800 but not just Ukraine.
00:13:58.820 It's a justification
00:13:59.500 for invading
00:14:00.620 much of Eastern Europe.
00:14:01.720 It's a justification
00:14:02.300 for invading Poland,
00:14:03.980 for invading Finland,
00:14:05.020 for invading the Baltic,
00:14:06.140 He longs for
00:14:08.080 all the land
00:14:09.260 that was ever connected
00:14:10.400 in any way for Russia.
00:14:12.020 A hundred years ago,
00:14:14.000 he longs to
00:14:15.000 forcibly reassemble that,
00:14:16.920 and that is
00:14:17.600 really damn dangerous
00:14:19.280 for Europe
00:14:21.160 and for America.
00:14:22.540 The Soviet Union
00:14:23.500 was a dire threat,
00:14:26.780 and Putin wants
00:14:28.000 the Soviet Union
00:14:29.140 only stronger
00:14:30.580 and more powerful
00:14:31.560 this time.
00:14:32.580 Now,
00:14:32.780 he makes the claim here,
00:14:34.820 as we've been talking about,
00:14:36.060 he has the first bit,
00:14:37.600 which is about history,
00:14:38.520 and he's getting
00:14:39.700 a little creative,
00:14:40.600 perhaps,
00:14:40.920 with his history.
00:14:41.720 Look,
00:14:41.880 this is so bad,
00:14:42.700 it would make
00:14:43.100 the 1619 Project blush.
00:14:45.080 It is that revisionist.
00:14:47.720 Look,
00:14:48.060 it is literally
00:14:48.700 Russian propaganda.
00:14:51.000 Right,
00:14:51.420 right.
00:14:52.140 And,
00:14:52.360 but he saves,
00:14:54.000 I think,
00:14:54.320 the best propaganda
00:14:55.320 for the third part,
00:14:56.560 because he moves
00:14:57.100 into the second part,
00:14:57.760 he points out
00:14:58.180 that Ukraine
00:14:58.560 is a very corrupt oligarchy.
00:15:00.240 That's true.
00:15:00.780 I don't think anybody
00:15:01.360 really disputes that.
00:15:02.320 Then he gets
00:15:03.100 to the third part,
00:15:04.140 and he says,
00:15:05.100 the U.S. did this.
00:15:07.360 NATO did this,
00:15:08.560 because the United States
00:15:09.660 promised,
00:15:10.660 and the Russian
00:15:11.600 propaganda agencies
00:15:13.780 clearly have been
00:15:15.020 pushing this now
00:15:15.860 for a couple of weeks,
00:15:17.020 because it turned up
00:15:17.780 in Der Spiegel,
00:15:18.560 the German newspaper,
00:15:19.940 and they said,
00:15:20.620 there was an agreement
00:15:21.260 made in 1990,
00:15:22.560 1991,
00:15:23.540 the United States
00:15:24.260 assured
00:15:24.920 the then collapsing
00:15:26.320 Soviet Union
00:15:27.160 that in exchange
00:15:28.540 for Germany's
00:15:29.540 reunification,
00:15:30.880 the Soviet Union
00:15:31.680 or whatever
00:15:32.320 exists of it anymore,
00:15:33.760 is going to let
00:15:34.300 Germany come back together
00:15:35.440 in exchange for that,
00:15:37.000 the United States
00:15:37.760 is not going
00:15:38.460 to expand NATO
00:15:39.400 eastward.
00:15:40.120 And I knew
00:15:40.620 it was Russian
00:15:40.980 propaganda at the time
00:15:41.920 when I saw it
00:15:42.380 in Der Spiegel,
00:15:43.080 and now we know
00:15:43.760 it is because
00:15:44.220 it's in Putin's speech.
00:15:46.000 But Putin has
00:15:46.960 a point here.
00:15:47.740 If it is the case,
00:15:48.680 as it seems to be,
00:15:49.420 that the U.S.
00:15:50.100 promised that NATO
00:15:51.100 would not expand
00:15:51.820 eastward,
00:15:52.660 then if,
00:15:53.840 as we have
00:15:54.400 broken that
00:15:55.960 apparent promise,
00:15:57.220 does Russia
00:15:57.980 have a legitimate
00:15:58.680 security concern
00:15:59.540 to say,
00:16:00.680 look,
00:16:00.900 if NATO's
00:16:01.420 going to move
00:16:01.820 toward the east,
00:16:02.520 then we need
00:16:03.060 to go invade
00:16:03.680 our neighbors.
00:16:05.160 Well,
00:16:05.320 number one,
00:16:06.200 Putin doesn't
00:16:06.720 point to any
00:16:07.240 evidence for
00:16:07.780 this alleged promise.
00:16:09.120 There certainly
00:16:09.680 is no treaty
00:16:10.280 to that effect.
00:16:11.180 The way America
00:16:12.000 makes promises
00:16:13.000 is through treaties.
00:16:14.400 The Soviet Union
00:16:15.180 didn't break up
00:16:16.180 out of kindness
00:16:17.080 and goodwill
00:16:17.900 towards us.
00:16:18.580 The Soviet Union
00:16:19.340 broke up
00:16:20.000 because we won
00:16:21.000 the Cold War.
00:16:21.720 The Soviet Union
00:16:22.400 broke up
00:16:23.000 because we defeated
00:16:24.360 the Soviet Union.
00:16:25.740 The Soviet Union
00:16:26.400 broke up
00:16:26.860 because we were
00:16:27.360 bankrupting their economy.
00:16:28.560 The Soviet Union
00:16:29.260 broke up
00:16:29.800 because Ronald Reagan
00:16:30.920 had the courage
00:16:31.640 and vision
00:16:32.160 to stand up.
00:16:33.980 You know,
00:16:34.440 go back to the 70s.
00:16:36.260 In the 70s,
00:16:37.100 you had
00:16:37.660 conventional wisdom
00:16:39.240 in foreign policy
00:16:40.240 among all Democrats
00:16:41.920 and most Republicans
00:16:42.920 is that you should
00:16:44.780 engage in mealy-mouthed
00:16:46.480 ambiguity towards
00:16:47.460 the Soviet Union
00:16:48.460 that the Soviet Union
00:16:50.580 was unstoppable,
00:16:51.660 it was unbeatable,
00:16:52.460 and there was
00:16:52.920 this crazy cowboy
00:16:54.380 in California
00:16:56.000 named Ronald Reagan.
00:16:57.840 And when Reagan
00:16:58.900 became president,
00:17:00.060 he referred to
00:17:01.180 the Soviet Union
00:17:01.920 as an evil empire.
00:17:03.620 And all of the
00:17:05.200 intelligentsia
00:17:06.060 were shocked.
00:17:07.340 He said Marxism,
00:17:08.560 Leninism will end up
00:17:09.360 on the ash heap
00:17:10.020 of history.
00:17:10.460 Again,
00:17:11.500 all of the educated
00:17:13.120 elites said,
00:17:13.780 that's terrible,
00:17:14.480 you can't say that.
00:17:16.160 All of our professors
00:17:17.200 were Marxists,
00:17:17.800 how can that possibly be?
00:17:19.000 That I'm paraphrasing.
00:17:20.620 But,
00:17:20.860 you know,
00:17:22.360 he spoke
00:17:24.340 with absolute clarity.
00:17:25.760 They asked him,
00:17:27.180 what's your objective
00:17:28.360 in the Cold War?
00:17:29.260 Now remember,
00:17:30.020 Nixon said,
00:17:31.460 détente,
00:17:32.720 which I've joked,
00:17:33.600 détente is French
00:17:34.560 for surrender.
00:17:35.260 You know,
00:17:36.080 we just want to
00:17:37.040 hold them
00:17:37.540 to a stalemate
00:17:38.520 because,
00:17:39.200 and Reagan
00:17:39.920 had the absolute
00:17:41.620 effrontery
00:17:42.260 to say,
00:17:43.340 the goal's very simple,
00:17:45.380 we win,
00:17:45.860 they lose.
00:17:46.700 People gasped.
00:17:48.560 And when Reagan
00:17:49.500 stood in front
00:17:50.140 of the Brandenburg Gate
00:17:51.000 and said,
00:17:51.280 Mr. Gorbachev,
00:17:52.020 tear down this wall,
00:17:53.200 that clarity
00:17:54.160 combined with
00:17:55.360 missile defense,
00:17:56.760 Reagan invested
00:17:57.640 in SDI,
00:17:58.600 Strategic Defense Initiative
00:17:59.720 called Star Wars.
00:18:01.180 The American economy
00:18:02.580 was so powerful,
00:18:03.620 the Soviets
00:18:04.000 couldn't keep up.
00:18:04.860 And so they broke up
00:18:05.720 because they couldn't
00:18:06.380 stay together.
00:18:07.480 We didn't give them
00:18:08.220 any concessions
00:18:09.040 and NATO is the most
00:18:10.080 successful military alliance
00:18:12.260 in modern history.
00:18:14.220 But what does Putin want?
00:18:16.260 Putin wants to reassemble
00:18:17.320 the Soviet Union.
00:18:18.660 He wants to break up NATO
00:18:20.320 and this invasion
00:18:21.380 is a major objective
00:18:23.540 here is breaking up NATO.
00:18:25.220 He also wants to end
00:18:26.400 missile defense.
00:18:27.700 And it's one of the things
00:18:28.420 he talks about in the speech
00:18:29.520 that America keeps installing
00:18:31.940 missile defense sites
00:18:32.920 and we don't want
00:18:33.600 missile defense.
00:18:34.860 So let's pause.
00:18:36.300 Let's talk about
00:18:37.000 what happens next
00:18:37.820 because it's important
00:18:38.560 to understand
00:18:39.320 what's going to play out
00:18:40.800 in the coming days
00:18:41.700 and weeks.
00:18:43.260 So where this fight
00:18:45.120 is engaged
00:18:45.800 is a region of Ukraine
00:18:47.440 called Donbass
00:18:48.600 and I'm holding here
00:18:49.580 a map.
00:18:50.140 I don't know how clear
00:18:50.960 it's going to come through
00:18:51.860 but I'm holding up
00:18:53.600 a map of Ukraine
00:18:55.080 and you can see
00:18:56.440 the Donbass region
00:18:57.520 is the eastern portion
00:18:59.180 of Ukraine
00:19:00.860 and it's two different regions.
00:19:02.320 One's called
00:19:03.100 the Donetsk region
00:19:04.560 and the other's called
00:19:05.400 the Luchansk region
00:19:06.620 and if you look
00:19:10.020 at those two regions
00:19:11.000 there's a portion
00:19:12.660 of those regions
00:19:13.600 that are controlled
00:19:15.140 by Russian separatists
00:19:16.280 and have been controlled
00:19:17.480 by essentially
00:19:18.400 Russian militia
00:19:19.940 that the Russians
00:19:20.580 have been putting in place.
00:19:22.220 That's sort of
00:19:23.040 the darker portion
00:19:23.900 of this map.
00:19:24.860 The lighter portion
00:19:25.840 of this map
00:19:27.100 is not controlled
00:19:27.760 by Russian separatists.
00:19:28.860 What happened was
00:19:30.400 the Russian separatists
00:19:31.640 in those two regions
00:19:32.700 declared independence
00:19:34.340 for the entire region.
00:19:36.620 Once they declared independence
00:19:38.660 these are militia
00:19:39.680 effectively controlled
00:19:40.560 by Russia
00:19:41.100 then what happened
00:19:43.100 was the Russian Duma
00:19:44.220 the parliament
00:19:44.840 authorized
00:19:47.180 Putin to go defend
00:19:50.780 the independent regions.
00:19:52.860 Putin recognized them
00:19:53.860 and the Duma said
00:19:54.560 you're authorized
00:19:55.460 to defend them
00:19:56.360 and so Putin
00:19:57.580 is calling the troops
00:19:58.860 that he's sending in
00:19:59.840 to invade Ukraine
00:20:00.980 peacekeepers.
00:20:02.620 And this is an old
00:20:03.780 Soviet trick.
00:20:04.640 This is not the first time.
00:20:06.280 He's not
00:20:06.980 he's being perfectly
00:20:09.400 shameless
00:20:11.620 in saying
00:20:14.180 oh well we're just
00:20:15.080 going to defend
00:20:16.280 the persecuted
00:20:17.300 and we're peacekeepers.
00:20:19.940 I think we will see
00:20:21.360 in the coming days
00:20:22.480 Russian troops
00:20:24.220 invading the Donbass region
00:20:25.900 but I think
00:20:26.640 there is a very real risk
00:20:27.920 that they won't stop there
00:20:29.060 that they will continue
00:20:30.740 throughout the remainder
00:20:31.840 of Ukraine
00:20:32.420 they will continue
00:20:33.140 up to Kiev
00:20:33.880 the capital city.
00:20:36.020 You know
00:20:36.600 in this speech
00:20:37.460 Putin goes on
00:20:38.460 at length
00:20:38.900 and says
00:20:39.420 Ukraine is not
00:20:40.860 a real country.
00:20:42.540 This is not
00:20:43.640 he talks about
00:20:45.780 about the revolution
00:20:48.120 so
00:20:48.800 in 2014
00:20:50.840 there was a revolution
00:20:53.220 from the people.
00:20:54.040 Ukraine
00:20:55.500 had
00:20:56.180 as its head
00:20:58.340 of state
00:20:58.760 Yanukovych
00:20:59.440 who was a Russian puppet
00:21:00.340 and there were
00:21:01.820 massive protests
00:21:02.920 against this Russian puppet
00:21:04.320 the corruption
00:21:04.940 they didn't like Ukraine
00:21:06.200 being subject
00:21:07.280 to Russia's control
00:21:08.400 and what happened
00:21:10.000 the Maiden Square
00:21:10.960 which is
00:21:11.420 in Kiev
00:21:12.320 you had
00:21:13.760 thousands
00:21:14.380 and thousands
00:21:14.980 of protesters
00:21:15.700 standing up
00:21:16.540 and you had
00:21:17.940 the Ukrainian police
00:21:19.780 that were controlled
00:21:20.480 by the Russians
00:21:21.060 at that time
00:21:21.740 shooting them
00:21:22.560 shooting
00:21:23.500 over 100 people
00:21:26.100 were murdered
00:21:26.900 by snipers
00:21:29.160 you know
00:21:29.380 I went to Kiev
00:21:30.520 in 2014
00:21:31.260 after this happened
00:21:32.280 and walked
00:21:34.620 through the Maiden Square
00:21:35.560 a 16 year old girl
00:21:36.680 who had been
00:21:36.960 one of the protesters
00:21:37.800 led me through
00:21:38.580 the Maiden Square
00:21:39.140 showed me
00:21:40.000 where compatriots
00:21:41.600 of hers
00:21:41.940 protesters
00:21:42.580 were standing
00:21:43.400 and where they'd been
00:21:44.700 shot by snipers
00:21:45.640 and murdered
00:21:46.040 and you could still see
00:21:47.560 you could still see
00:21:48.700 the bloodstains
00:21:49.400 on the ground
00:21:50.080 where they had
00:21:50.620 murdered the protesters
00:21:51.580 but what happened
00:21:52.460 it led to a revolution
00:21:54.880 in Ukraine
00:21:55.560 which Putin calls
00:21:56.920 a coup d'etat
00:21:57.540 because suddenly
00:21:58.840 he didn't control
00:22:00.140 Ukraine anymore
00:22:01.200 instead
00:22:02.200 it elected
00:22:03.340 its own leader
00:22:03.980 so I met with Poroshenko
00:22:05.340 who was the new leader
00:22:06.060 then
00:22:06.400 it was actually called
00:22:07.780 the Chocolate King
00:22:08.560 my girls were very excited
00:22:09.760 that I was meeting
00:22:10.600 with someone named
00:22:11.160 the Chocolate King
00:22:11.920 but it was because
00:22:13.200 he was a candy maker
00:22:13.980 not because he was
00:22:14.820 in fact Willy Wonka
00:22:15.740 but you look at
00:22:19.860 this speech
00:22:22.120 is laying out
00:22:23.300 that all of history
00:22:24.660 in Ukraine
00:22:25.280 of independent governance
00:22:27.580 governance that wants
00:22:28.700 to be allied
00:22:29.300 with the West
00:22:30.080 with Europe
00:22:30.620 with America
00:22:31.260 all of that
00:22:32.240 is illegitimate
00:22:33.080 and Putin
00:22:34.760 is the liberator
00:22:36.340 and the peacekeeper
00:22:38.480 and you know
00:22:40.220 it's interesting
00:22:41.160 this speech
00:22:41.880 why did he give
00:22:42.780 an hour long
00:22:43.860 meticulously reset
00:22:45.380 researched
00:22:46.180 revisionist history
00:22:47.580 speech
00:22:47.980 I will say this
00:22:49.380 Putin has learned
00:22:50.280 one lesson
00:22:50.880 of the Cold War
00:22:51.740 which is the
00:22:52.920 intellectual foundation
00:22:54.320 that Reagan laid out
00:22:55.760 help lead the predicate
00:22:58.080 for winning the Cold War
00:23:00.200 and I think Putin
00:23:00.940 is fighting very hard
00:23:02.560 to lay out
00:23:03.800 a counter narrative
00:23:04.880 that sadly
00:23:06.820 there are useful
00:23:08.100 idiots in the West
00:23:09.140 who will echo
00:23:09.960 no this is something
00:23:11.080 to that exact point
00:23:12.260 it hadn't occurred to me
00:23:13.100 until you said it
00:23:13.860 but he lays out
00:23:15.140 that reasoning
00:23:15.760 in the speech itself
00:23:17.020 right he says
00:23:17.620 the intellectual foundation
00:23:19.140 for the Soviet Union
00:23:20.240 created by Lenin
00:23:21.540 and then not amended
00:23:22.440 by Stalin
00:23:23.160 led to our
00:23:24.440 voluntary
00:23:25.540 or inevitable
00:23:26.840 collapse
00:23:27.440 right he says
00:23:27.940 you didn't beat us
00:23:29.160 it wasn't the republics
00:23:30.600 they didn't actually
00:23:31.260 win independence
00:23:31.880 or break away
00:23:32.460 it was a problem
00:23:34.040 of the communist party
00:23:35.340 logic in the Soviet Union
00:23:36.520 because of that
00:23:37.180 intellectual foundation
00:23:38.080 so now
00:23:39.000 I'm creating a new
00:23:40.240 intellectual foundation
00:23:41.380 here for why
00:23:42.300 we've got to gobble up
00:23:43.280 our neighbors
00:23:44.020 but then this question
00:23:45.000 remains
00:23:45.460 and it's for a lot
00:23:47.280 of people in the West
00:23:48.660 who don't know
00:23:49.760 where Kiev is
00:23:50.820 who don't know
00:23:51.360 where Lviv is
00:23:52.460 who don't
00:23:52.980 probably don't know
00:23:53.760 where Ukraine is
00:23:54.620 and really nor should
00:23:56.900 they I suppose
00:23:57.540 in their day to day
00:23:58.360 they probably don't
00:23:59.100 think about this
00:23:59.660 that much
00:24:00.140 which is
00:24:01.020 why do we care
00:24:02.940 do we do we want
00:24:04.060 NATO to be
00:24:04.840 in these
00:24:05.420 Eastern European states
00:24:06.800 do we care if
00:24:07.920 Vladimir I mean
00:24:08.520 we care maybe
00:24:09.060 at a moral level
00:24:09.780 but do we care
00:24:10.460 at a you know
00:24:11.360 politics is full
00:24:12.300 of all sorts
00:24:12.740 of terrible things
00:24:13.320 do we care
00:24:13.800 if Putin gobbles
00:24:14.480 up his neighbors
00:24:15.500 is this a threat
00:24:16.800 to the U.S.
00:24:17.800 national interest
00:24:18.520 so it is
00:24:19.500 and Michael
00:24:20.040 it's a great question
00:24:20.900 and I will say
00:24:21.480 some Republicans
00:24:22.280 who speak about this
00:24:23.540 when they speak
00:24:24.880 I want to jump
00:24:25.780 out a window
00:24:26.240 because they talk
00:24:27.140 about this sort
00:24:27.820 of amorphous need
00:24:29.520 to protect democracy
00:24:30.800 across the globe
00:24:31.820 and it's complete garbage
00:24:32.860 that is not
00:24:36.540 our focus
00:24:37.680 should be protecting
00:24:38.740 U.S. national security
00:24:39.980 not we are not
00:24:41.680 just world policemen
00:24:43.480 we are not
00:24:44.120 protecting democracy
00:24:45.240 wherever it occurs
00:24:46.180 but it is
00:24:48.700 in our interest
00:24:49.480 for enemies
00:24:50.560 of America
00:24:51.320 people that want
00:24:52.100 to defeat America
00:24:53.220 not to get
00:24:54.940 much much stronger
00:24:56.220 and more able
00:24:57.460 to inflict damage
00:24:58.920 on America
00:24:59.520 the Soviet Union's
00:25:01.800 collapse was one
00:25:02.680 of the greatest
00:25:03.340 victories for world
00:25:04.580 peace but also
00:25:05.420 for American
00:25:06.140 national security
00:25:07.340 that we've ever
00:25:08.440 seen
00:25:08.900 Russia is much
00:25:10.780 much less dangerous
00:25:11.780 than the Soviet Union
00:25:12.680 was
00:25:13.040 Russia is much
00:25:14.120 much less powerful
00:25:15.200 than the Soviet Union
00:25:16.020 was
00:25:16.400 that's why Putin's
00:25:17.600 unhappy
00:25:18.020 he wants
00:25:19.520 the danger
00:25:21.260 he wants the power
00:25:22.440 he wants the threat
00:25:23.440 to America
00:25:24.120 of the Soviet Union
00:25:25.140 that is also
00:25:26.460 why we should
00:25:27.300 not want that
00:25:28.240 we want to keep
00:25:29.340 Putin relatively
00:25:30.560 weak
00:25:31.180 because he
00:25:32.720 harbors
00:25:33.600 I gotta say
00:25:35.660 you read this
00:25:36.440 speech
00:25:36.920 and it is
00:25:37.840 reminiscent
00:25:38.520 of early
00:25:39.520 speeches
00:25:40.040 of Hitler
00:25:40.580 and look
00:25:40.940 in politics
00:25:41.460 there are far
00:25:41.940 too many
00:25:42.460 analogies
00:25:43.680 to Hitler
00:25:44.080 I think
00:25:45.040 you always
00:25:45.600 have to be
00:25:46.120 cautious
00:25:46.480 but you look
00:25:47.900 at Hitler
00:25:48.300 when he's
00:25:48.740 talking about
00:25:49.320 needing
00:25:49.580 growing room
00:25:50.660 needing living
00:25:51.740 space for Germany
00:25:52.980 and it's the
00:25:54.720 same sort
00:25:55.540 of wild
00:25:57.480 ambition
00:25:58.280 I mean
00:25:58.620 going back
00:25:59.220 rehashing
00:26:01.400 wrongs
00:26:03.260 perceived
00:26:03.740 wrongs
00:26:04.820 from a
00:26:05.340 century
00:26:05.960 ago
00:26:06.580 that
00:26:08.540 you know
00:26:09.580 repeatedly
00:26:10.200 in this speech
00:26:11.140 Putin refers
00:26:12.280 to what he
00:26:12.780 calls the
00:26:13.260 virus
00:26:14.020 of nationalism
00:26:15.680 by the way
00:26:16.300 that's
00:26:17.120 the Poles
00:26:18.380 wanting to be
00:26:18.980 part of Poland
00:26:19.660 and not subject
00:26:20.480 to his
00:26:20.780 dictatorship
00:26:21.300 that's the
00:26:22.120 people in
00:26:22.500 Estonia
00:26:23.020 not wanting
00:26:23.540 to be subject
00:26:23.980 to his
00:26:24.300 dictatorship
00:26:24.940 that is
00:26:25.800 simply
00:26:26.140 countries
00:26:26.620 wanting to
00:26:27.100 govern
00:26:27.340 themselves
00:26:27.700 and people
00:26:28.260 wanting to
00:26:28.640 be free
00:26:28.940 he calls
00:26:29.320 that a
00:26:29.700 virus
00:26:30.200 and a
00:26:31.140 disease
00:26:31.640 and it
00:26:33.700 is
00:26:34.140 there is
00:26:36.120 a grandiosity
00:26:37.100 to this
00:26:37.940 that is
00:26:39.300 frightening
00:26:39.740 now here's
00:26:40.380 what
00:26:40.700 there's a
00:26:42.500 very good
00:26:42.880 chance
00:26:43.240 will play
00:26:43.660 out
00:26:43.980 that in
00:26:44.840 the coming
00:26:45.200 days
00:26:45.800 Putin
00:26:46.380 will invade
00:26:46.960 the Donbass
00:26:47.560 regions
00:26:48.060 that under
00:26:49.860 the pretense
00:26:51.160 of being a
00:26:51.700 peacekeeper
00:26:52.200 that he will
00:26:53.700 manufacture a
00:26:54.700 pretense to
00:26:55.320 continue invading
00:26:56.260 Ukraine to go
00:26:57.060 all the way
00:26:57.460 to Kiev
00:26:57.880 that once
00:26:59.500 he seizes
00:27:00.000 control of
00:27:00.640 the nation
00:27:01.080 I expect
00:27:03.220 Putin to
00:27:03.700 then try to
00:27:04.260 negotiate
00:27:04.700 to leave
00:27:05.940 to formally
00:27:06.620 say we're
00:27:07.960 going to
00:27:08.460 withdraw
00:27:08.840 but the
00:27:11.200 condition of
00:27:11.860 withdraw is
00:27:12.560 we want to
00:27:13.160 put a puppet
00:27:13.640 in place
00:27:14.040 they want
00:27:14.480 someone like
00:27:15.280 Yanukovych back
00:27:16.140 in place
00:27:16.520 so they'll
00:27:16.900 even say
00:27:17.360 look there's
00:27:18.280 a new
00:27:18.600 Ukrainian
00:27:19.020 leader
00:27:19.400 he just
00:27:19.960 reports to
00:27:21.180 Putin
00:27:21.500 like Belarus
00:27:22.920 which is
00:27:23.760 basically a
00:27:24.440 puppet state
00:27:24.980 of Russia
00:27:25.360 that they
00:27:25.740 want
00:27:26.100 Ukraine
00:27:27.000 to be
00:27:27.360 the same
00:27:27.840 but I
00:27:28.120 think even
00:27:28.480 more than
00:27:28.880 that
00:27:29.120 and Putin
00:27:29.500 lays this
00:27:29.940 out in
00:27:30.180 the speech
00:27:30.640 he is
00:27:32.080 going to
00:27:32.500 want
00:27:32.820 major
00:27:33.540 concessions
00:27:34.560 from Joe
00:27:35.340 Biden
00:27:35.720 and from
00:27:36.720 NATO
00:27:37.000 concessions
00:27:37.840 like
00:27:38.260 withdraw
00:27:39.020 troops
00:27:39.520 from
00:27:39.740 NATO
00:27:40.060 concessions
00:27:41.400 like
00:27:41.760 limit
00:27:42.920 or prohibit
00:27:43.760 exercises
00:27:44.600 in Eastern
00:27:45.200 Europe
00:27:45.600 concessions
00:27:46.620 like
00:27:46.980 limit
00:27:47.640 or prohibit
00:27:48.300 missiles
00:27:48.760 or anti-missile
00:27:49.600 batteries
00:27:50.120 from Eastern
00:27:50.780 Europe
00:27:51.120 and I
00:27:52.220 gotta say
00:27:52.780 given
00:27:53.140 Biden's
00:27:53.720 pattern
00:27:54.060 of
00:27:54.340 weakness
00:27:54.720 I
00:27:55.780 think
00:27:55.980 there's
00:27:56.300 a
00:27:56.440 very
00:27:56.700 real
00:27:57.140 risk
00:27:57.560 that
00:27:57.800 Biden
00:27:58.260 will
00:27:58.780 surrender
00:27:59.980 and literally
00:28:00.800 pay
00:28:01.280 Putin
00:28:01.720 to
00:28:02.420 withdraw
00:28:02.800 after he
00:28:03.640 invades
00:28:04.100 and puts
00:28:04.460 a puppet
00:28:04.800 government
00:28:05.180 in place
00:28:05.700 under his
00:28:06.100 control
00:28:06.460 that is
00:28:07.400 a
00:28:07.760 very
00:28:08.700 sad
00:28:09.420 unfortunate
00:28:10.180 outcome
00:28:10.560 I wish
00:28:11.800 there
00:28:12.000 I wish
00:28:13.000 that there
00:28:13.400 were more
00:28:13.920 hope for
00:28:14.560 the way
00:28:14.760 the situation
00:28:15.280 plays out
00:28:15.840 but unfortunately
00:28:16.680 you have
00:28:17.460 predicted this
00:28:18.540 pretty well
00:28:19.160 I'm not just
00:28:20.640 flattering you
00:28:21.140 people can go
00:28:21.560 back to the
00:28:21.900 previous episodes
00:28:22.580 this whole
00:28:23.640 experience
00:28:25.460 in Ukraine
00:28:26.120 has played
00:28:27.120 out
00:28:27.460 as
00:28:28.280 we were
00:28:29.200 discussing
00:28:29.660 on this
00:28:30.120 show
00:28:30.500 we should
00:28:31.260 note
00:28:31.600 for the
00:28:32.040 listeners
00:28:32.380 we're
00:28:33.020 speaking
00:28:33.340 right now
00:28:33.840 it's
00:28:34.120 Tuesday
00:28:34.520 evening
00:28:35.020 obviously
00:28:35.920 the events
00:28:36.400 are changing
00:28:37.080 hour by
00:28:38.140 hour
00:28:38.460 in Ukraine
00:28:39.180 but that
00:28:40.240 would appear
00:28:40.600 to be
00:28:41.040 the script
00:28:43.140 so Michael
00:28:43.940 let me
00:28:44.540 do briefly
00:28:45.440 say
00:28:45.960 what Biden
00:28:46.920 should do
00:28:47.840 you noted
00:28:49.420 it's Tuesday
00:28:50.120 evening
00:28:50.480 so I don't
00:28:50.880 know what's
00:28:51.240 going to
00:28:51.400 happen
00:28:51.620 tonight or
00:28:52.020 tomorrow
00:28:52.340 but here's
00:28:53.840 what Biden
00:28:54.400 should do
00:28:55.100 today
00:28:55.560 right now
00:28:56.620 he should
00:28:57.680 immediately
00:28:58.320 rescind
00:28:59.160 his waiver
00:28:59.920 of the
00:29:01.240 Nord Stream
00:29:01.700 2
00:29:01.920 sanctions
00:29:02.380 now
00:29:02.860 one of
00:29:03.620 the things
00:29:04.000 that played
00:29:04.400 out today
00:29:04.960 is Germany
00:29:05.620 announced
00:29:07.260 that they
00:29:07.760 were suspending
00:29:08.540 Nord Stream
00:29:09.040 2
00:29:09.300 the problem
00:29:11.300 is
00:29:11.740 Putin
00:29:12.300 doesn't
00:29:12.700 believe
00:29:13.020 that
00:29:13.400 Germany
00:29:16.520 has been
00:29:17.400 so weak
00:29:18.420 on this
00:29:18.960 that he
00:29:19.280 fully
00:29:19.680 expects
00:29:20.340 that as
00:29:21.140 part of
00:29:21.720 negotiating
00:29:22.440 the withdrawal
00:29:23.060 that they'll
00:29:23.680 turn Nord Stream
00:29:24.500 2 on
00:29:25.180 and so that
00:29:25.960 this is just
00:29:26.540 a momentary
00:29:27.320 delay
00:29:27.760 Biden
00:29:29.060 he doesn't
00:29:29.800 believe
00:29:30.020 Biden
00:29:30.340 either
00:29:30.600 both
00:29:30.940 Biden
00:29:31.280 and Germany
00:29:31.780 have
00:29:32.060 demonstrated
00:29:32.680 empty
00:29:33.120 promises
00:29:33.580 over and
00:29:33.980 over again
00:29:34.240 so Putin
00:29:34.660 is laughing
00:29:35.240 at
00:29:35.580 okay fine
00:29:36.560 you suspended
00:29:37.180 it briefly
00:29:37.680 sure
00:29:38.180 when I
00:29:38.920 come in
00:29:39.240 and invade
00:29:39.620 Ukraine
00:29:39.980 and what
00:29:40.820 you're
00:29:41.020 going to
00:29:41.100 let your
00:29:41.360 people freeze
00:29:42.000 to death
00:29:42.400 no you're
00:29:42.880 going to
00:29:43.540 turn the
00:29:43.980 pipeline
00:29:44.320 on
00:29:44.760 because
00:29:45.300 I'm
00:29:45.560 going to
00:29:45.700 have
00:29:45.840 all the
00:29:46.120 leverage
00:29:46.500 Biden
00:29:47.580 should
00:29:48.040 immediately
00:29:48.940 revoke
00:29:50.240 his waiver
00:29:50.780 of the
00:29:51.080 sanctions
00:29:51.460 that would
00:29:51.840 impose
00:29:52.260 sanctions
00:29:52.780 on Nord Stream
00:29:53.500 2 AG
00:29:54.020 which is
00:29:54.540 the umbrella
00:29:55.620 company
00:29:56.140 that owns
00:29:57.080 and operates
00:29:57.680 Nord Stream
00:29:58.160 2
00:29:58.440 but secondly
00:29:59.940 Congress
00:30:01.440 should pass
00:30:02.180 legislation
00:30:02.820 that I've
00:30:03.240 introduced
00:30:03.600 that we
00:30:04.120 voted on
00:30:04.940 just a few
00:30:06.240 weeks ago
00:30:06.840 that I got
00:30:07.580 a big
00:30:08.240 bipartisan
00:30:08.860 majority
00:30:09.360 of Congress
00:30:09.820 to vote
00:30:10.140 for the
00:30:10.480 Senate
00:30:10.720 the vote
00:30:11.720 was 55
00:30:12.400 to 44
00:30:13.160 so six
00:30:13.880 Democrats
00:30:14.420 voted with
00:30:15.020 me
00:30:15.260 but the
00:30:16.680 Democrats
00:30:17.120 filibustered
00:30:17.760 it
00:30:17.940 they demanded
00:30:18.480 60
00:30:18.980 ironically
00:30:19.520 while they
00:30:19.920 were simultaneously
00:30:20.600 giving speeches
00:30:21.500 calling the
00:30:22.420 filibuster a
00:30:23.360 racist relic
00:30:24.240 of Jim Crow
00:30:24.920 that same
00:30:26.520 day they
00:30:27.140 were filibustering
00:30:27.940 to protect
00:30:28.940 Russia from
00:30:29.420 sanctions
00:30:29.860 but we
00:30:31.000 ought to
00:30:31.200 pass that
00:30:31.700 legislation
00:30:32.360 that takes
00:30:33.800 away Joe
00:30:34.660 Biden's
00:30:35.200 ability to
00:30:35.900 waive these
00:30:36.520 sanctions
00:30:36.980 you want
00:30:37.860 to talk
00:30:38.820 about the
00:30:39.220 only thing
00:30:39.820 that I
00:30:40.140 think has
00:30:40.640 a prayer
00:30:41.540 of stopping
00:30:43.340 Putin
00:30:43.720 even this
00:30:44.520 might not
00:30:44.940 work
00:30:45.180 he's so
00:30:45.680 far along
00:30:46.580 that there
00:30:47.340 may not
00:30:47.660 be anything
00:30:48.260 that can
00:30:48.620 be done
00:30:48.940 to stop
00:30:49.420 it
00:30:49.580 but the
00:30:50.160 only thing
00:30:50.700 that has
00:30:51.140 a chance
00:30:51.980 of stopping
00:30:52.600 it is
00:30:53.780 imposing the
00:30:54.620 sanctions
00:30:55.020 right now
00:30:55.620 and Congress
00:30:56.180 acting to
00:30:56.840 say you
00:30:57.700 know what
00:30:58.220 Biden
00:30:59.580 doesn't have
00:31:00.060 the ability
00:31:00.520 to waive
00:31:01.000 these in
00:31:01.340 other words
00:31:01.780 these sanctions
00:31:02.560 are going
00:31:03.120 to be a
00:31:04.200 permanent
00:31:04.760 factor
00:31:05.320 we're not
00:31:06.020 turning on
00:31:06.660 Nord Stream
00:31:07.160 2
00:31:07.480 that would
00:31:08.620 be the
00:31:08.920 right thing
00:31:09.320 to do
00:31:09.600 and by
00:31:09.940 the way
00:31:10.440 both the
00:31:11.340 leadership
00:31:11.700 of Ukraine
00:31:12.340 and the
00:31:12.640 leadership
00:31:12.940 of Poland
00:31:13.520 have explicitly
00:31:14.240 asked us
00:31:14.860 to do
00:31:15.140 that
00:31:15.320 they've
00:31:16.020 told us
00:31:16.560 if you
00:31:16.860 want to
00:31:17.140 stop
00:31:17.400 the
00:31:17.560 invasion
00:31:18.060 sanction
00:31:18.980 Nord Stream
00:31:19.900 2
00:31:20.120 immediately
00:31:20.700 as you
00:31:22.060 know
00:31:22.260 I've
00:31:22.520 got holds
00:31:23.120 on a
00:31:23.340 bunch
00:31:23.520 of State
00:31:23.840 Department
00:31:24.220 nominees
00:31:24.640 I've
00:31:25.100 repeatedly
00:31:25.620 offered
00:31:26.060 to the
00:31:26.300 Biden
00:31:26.540 White
00:31:26.840 House
00:31:27.140 if you
00:31:28.500 revoke
00:31:28.860 the waiver
00:31:29.300 if you
00:31:29.620 impose
00:31:29.940 the
00:31:30.120 sanctions
00:31:30.540 I'll
00:31:31.800 lift
00:31:31.980 my
00:31:32.200 holds
00:31:32.600 I can
00:31:33.020 tell you
00:31:33.400 I'm
00:31:33.660 extending
00:31:34.100 that offer
00:31:34.660 right
00:31:34.980 now
00:31:35.420 impose
00:31:36.660 the
00:31:36.920 sanctions
00:31:37.460 I'll
00:31:38.380 lift
00:31:38.620 my
00:31:38.880 holds
00:31:39.340 at
00:31:39.840 this
00:31:40.140 point
00:31:40.520 right
00:31:40.820 now
00:31:41.260 A
00:31:43.080 Putin
00:31:43.620 is
00:31:43.860 complaining
00:31:44.300 Stalin
00:31:44.800 wasn't
00:31:45.220 tough
00:31:45.480 enough
00:31:45.840 and
00:31:46.820 B
00:31:47.340 Biden
00:31:48.420 is
00:31:48.700 being
00:31:49.040 wimpier
00:31:49.580 on
00:31:49.880 Putin
00:31:50.940 than
00:31:51.600 Germany
00:31:52.120 both
00:31:53.380 of those
00:31:53.820 are
00:31:53.980 absurd
00:31:54.420 positions
00:31:55.000 I
00:31:55.380 hope
00:31:56.240 there
00:31:58.120 is
00:31:58.440 some
00:31:58.800 reasonableness
00:31:59.660 and we
00:32:00.060 see the
00:32:00.500 Biden
00:32:00.780 White
00:32:01.120 House
00:32:01.460 stop
00:32:02.580 this
00:32:02.960 fecklessness
00:32:05.200 that has
00:32:05.680 produced
00:32:06.320 chaos
00:32:07.520 and war
00:32:08.040 in
00:32:08.200 Europe
00:32:08.460 I'm
00:32:08.920 really
00:32:09.140 glad
00:32:09.380 you
00:32:09.540 mentioned
00:32:09.900 the
00:32:10.140 second
00:32:10.480 part
00:32:10.780 to
00:32:10.940 senator
00:32:11.240 because
00:32:11.520 as
00:32:12.040 you
00:32:12.180 were
00:32:12.420 telling
00:32:12.760 me
00:32:12.940 listen
00:32:13.160 here's
00:32:13.440 what
00:32:13.620 what
00:32:13.880 Congress
00:32:14.240 should
00:32:14.460 do
00:32:14.660 once
00:32:15.640 the
00:32:15.800 sanctions
00:32:16.140 go in
00:32:16.640 let's
00:32:16.880 hope
00:32:17.020 we
00:32:17.120 get
00:32:17.240 some
00:32:17.400 sanctions
00:32:17.780 then
00:32:18.540 they're
00:32:19.620 in
00:32:19.960 place
00:32:20.280 Congress
00:32:20.660 needs
00:32:20.900 to
00:32:21.020 go
00:32:21.140 in
00:32:21.240 though
00:32:21.340 and
00:32:21.440 make
00:32:21.600 sure
00:32:21.840 that
00:32:22.220 Biden
00:32:22.500 can't
00:32:22.860 take
00:32:23.060 away
00:32:23.280 those
00:32:23.540 sanctions
00:32:23.940 and
00:32:24.300 this
00:32:24.460 has
00:32:24.620 me
00:32:24.780 thinking
00:32:25.080 well
00:32:25.360 you
00:32:25.600 know
00:32:25.760 why
00:32:26.260 would
00:32:26.440 the
00:32:26.560 Democrats
00:32:26.940 go
00:32:27.180 along
00:32:27.500 with
00:32:27.680 that
00:32:27.860 why
00:32:28.120 would
00:32:28.460 Democrats
00:32:29.600 willingly
00:32:30.280 limit
00:32:30.760 Joe
00:32:31.040 Biden's
00:32:31.460 power
00:32:31.820 sure
00:32:32.220 maybe
00:32:32.540 they'll
00:32:32.760 have
00:32:32.920 some
00:32:33.140 solidarity
00:32:34.040 in the
00:32:34.420 Senate
00:32:34.620 or
00:32:34.760 something
00:32:34.980 but
00:32:35.140 probably
00:32:35.400 not
00:32:35.600 probably
00:32:35.820 this
00:32:35.960 is
00:32:36.060 going
00:32:36.120 to
00:32:36.200 break
00:32:36.380 down
00:32:36.600 unpartisan
00:32:37.300 lines
00:32:37.580 the
00:32:37.740 Democrats
00:32:38.080 have
00:32:38.300 no
00:32:38.460 reason
00:32:38.700 to
00:32:38.880 do
00:32:39.040 it
00:32:39.140 but
00:32:39.460 you're
00:32:39.700 offering
00:32:40.000 something
00:32:40.500 tangible
00:32:41.260 you're
00:32:41.800 saying
00:32:42.080 you've
00:32:42.260 got
00:32:42.380 a lot
00:32:42.880 of
00:32:43.220 Joe
00:32:43.860 Biden
00:32:44.260 State
00:32:44.580 Department
00:32:44.940 nominees
00:32:45.360 you've
00:32:45.620 got
00:32:45.720 holds
00:32:46.120 on
00:32:46.320 them
00:32:46.460 you're
00:32:46.880 dragging
00:32:47.180 this
00:32:47.420 process
00:32:47.900 out
00:32:48.320 ad
00:32:49.100 infinitum
00:32:49.660 it seems
00:32:50.000 like
00:32:50.300 and
00:32:50.660 you
00:32:50.800 can
00:32:50.940 release
00:32:51.260 those
00:32:51.500 holds
00:32:51.880 if
00:32:52.480 we
00:32:52.600 get
00:32:52.720 the
00:32:52.840 sanctions
00:32:53.220 and
00:32:53.860 or
00:32:53.980 if
00:32:54.120 we
00:32:54.200 get
00:32:54.300 legislation
00:32:54.660 that
00:32:54.900 does
00:32:55.160 not
00:32:55.340 allow
00:32:55.580 Biden
00:32:55.920 to
00:32:56.160 remove
00:32:56.540 the
00:32:56.680 sanctions
00:32:56.960 so
00:32:57.260 that's
00:32:58.140 exactly
00:32:58.560 right
00:32:58.900 and
00:32:59.040 so
00:32:59.180 that's
00:32:59.500 certainly
00:32:59.760 a
00:32:59.980 carrot
00:33:00.260 that's
00:33:00.620 a
00:33:00.760 sweetener
00:33:01.200 but
00:33:01.440 there's
00:33:01.860 another
00:33:02.080 factor
00:33:02.500 which
00:33:02.780 is
00:33:03.000 almost
00:33:04.140 every
00:33:04.760 single
00:33:05.200 Senate
00:33:05.540 Democrat
00:33:06.040 thinks
00:33:07.880 Biden
00:33:08.380 is
00:33:08.780 wrong
00:33:09.920 on
00:33:10.340 Nord Stream
00:33:10.800 2
00:33:11.080 they've
00:33:13.640 all
00:33:13.900 given
00:33:14.200 speeches
00:33:14.860 blasting
00:33:15.700 Nord Stream
00:33:16.320 2
00:33:16.660 the
00:33:17.660 Senate
00:33:17.960 Democrats
00:33:18.520 every
00:33:19.120 Democrat
00:33:19.640 has
00:33:19.960 voted
00:33:20.220 in
00:33:20.440 favor
00:33:20.700 of
00:33:20.880 my
00:33:21.080 sanctions
00:33:21.480 twice
00:33:22.020 in
00:33:23.620 2019
00:33:24.360 and
00:33:24.740 2020
00:33:25.220 100%
00:33:26.260 of
00:33:26.420 them
00:33:26.500 every
00:33:26.960 single
00:33:27.500 Democrat
00:33:28.000 the
00:33:29.320 only
00:33:29.560 difference
00:33:30.020 was
00:33:30.380 the
00:33:30.560 president
00:33:31.180 then
00:33:31.600 had
00:33:31.800 an
00:33:31.920 R
00:33:32.080 behind
00:33:32.380 his
00:33:32.580 name
00:33:32.800 instead
00:33:33.020 of
00:33:33.160 a
00:33:33.280 D
00:33:33.460 and
00:33:33.680 so
00:33:33.840 when
00:33:34.040 Donald
00:33:34.280 Trump
00:33:34.540 was
00:33:34.740 president
00:33:35.140 by
00:33:35.640 the
00:33:35.780 way
00:33:35.940 if
00:33:36.100 Trump
00:33:36.320 had
00:33:36.460 been
00:33:36.640 reelected
00:33:37.320 and
00:33:37.740 I
00:33:37.880 filed
00:33:38.140 my
00:33:38.320 sanctions
00:33:38.660 legislation
00:33:39.180 they'd
00:33:39.420 all
00:33:39.540 vote
00:33:39.700 for
00:33:39.880 it
00:33:39.980 again
00:33:40.260 in
00:33:40.420 a
00:33:40.540 heartbeat
00:33:40.880 and
00:33:41.120 they'd
00:33:41.300 give
00:33:41.420 speeches
00:33:41.820 about
00:33:42.120 how
00:33:42.320 Trump
00:33:42.620 loves
00:33:43.240 Russia
00:33:43.640 the
00:33:44.520 only
00:33:44.760 thing
00:33:45.080 that
00:33:45.280 changed
00:33:45.980 is
00:33:46.760 instead
00:33:47.040 of
00:33:47.200 a
00:33:47.300 Republican
00:33:47.680 you
00:33:47.920 have
00:33:48.100 Joe
00:33:48.340 Biden
00:33:48.720 and
00:33:49.640 when
00:33:49.840 44
00:33:50.460 Democrats
00:33:51.120 voted
00:33:51.460 no
00:33:51.840 on
00:33:53.500 the
00:33:53.700 sanctions
00:33:54.260 not
00:33:56.020 a
00:33:56.200 single
00:33:56.700 Democrat
00:33:57.240 put
00:33:57.700 forward
00:33:58.200 even
00:33:58.580 one
00:33:59.340 substantive
00:34:00.460 defense
00:34:01.080 of the
00:34:01.420 waiver
00:34:01.700 of
00:34:01.920 sanctions
00:34:02.300 I
00:34:02.480 mean
00:34:02.560 I
00:34:02.720 went
00:34:02.900 to
00:34:03.020 the
00:34:03.180 Senate
00:34:03.380 floor
00:34:03.700 for
00:34:04.220 hours
00:34:04.900 laying
00:34:05.300 out
00:34:05.520 the
00:34:05.680 case
00:34:05.920 giving
00:34:06.180 speeches
00:34:06.580 nobody
00:34:06.960 objected
00:34:07.660 they
00:34:08.040 said
00:34:08.260 we
00:34:08.400 don't
00:34:08.520 like
00:34:08.720 your
00:34:08.840 holds
00:34:09.100 we
00:34:09.240 don't
00:34:09.340 like
00:34:09.520 your
00:34:09.660 tactic
00:34:10.020 okay
00:34:10.300 fine
00:34:10.560 you
00:34:10.660 don't
00:34:10.760 like
00:34:10.880 my
00:34:11.040 tactic
00:34:11.380 I'm
00:34:11.620 trying
00:34:11.820 to
00:34:11.960 use
00:34:12.120 whatever
00:34:12.340 leverage
00:34:12.680 I
00:34:12.860 can
00:34:13.220 to
00:34:13.860 stop
00:34:14.540 a
00:34:15.020 generational
00:34:15.940 national
00:34:16.460 security
00:34:16.940 blunder
00:34:17.360 but
00:34:18.200 privately
00:34:19.720 Democrat
00:34:21.040 after
00:34:21.440 Democrat
00:34:21.880 they
00:34:22.280 say
00:34:22.560 to
00:34:22.700 me
00:34:22.840 I
00:34:23.040 don't
00:34:23.240 know
00:34:23.360 why
00:34:23.540 he's
00:34:23.700 doing
00:34:23.860 this
00:34:24.060 this
00:34:24.180 doesn't
00:34:24.460 make
00:34:24.640 any
00:34:24.820 sense
00:34:25.060 the
00:34:25.220 political
00:34:25.720 capital
00:34:26.320 that
00:34:27.580 they
00:34:27.920 spent
00:34:28.700 surrendering
00:34:30.780 to
00:34:31.040 Russia
00:34:31.400 was
00:34:31.800 insane
00:34:32.420 and I'll
00:34:33.440 make
00:34:33.620 two
00:34:33.800 quick
00:34:34.000 points
00:34:34.280 on
00:34:34.440 that
00:34:34.640 the
00:34:35.700 day
00:34:35.940 we
00:34:36.180 voted
00:34:36.520 on
00:34:36.860 my
00:34:37.260 Nordstrom
00:34:37.640 two
00:34:37.860 sanctions
00:34:38.280 bill
00:34:38.540 a few
00:34:38.780 weeks
00:34:39.000 ago
00:34:39.300 Joe
00:34:40.360 Biden
00:34:40.760 personally
00:34:41.500 came
00:34:42.180 to
00:34:42.860 the
00:34:43.060 Senate
00:34:43.300 to
00:34:43.480 Capitol
00:34:43.800 Hill
00:34:44.060 to
00:34:45.320 lobby
00:34:45.900 Democratic
00:34:47.120 senators
00:34:47.580 to vote
00:34:48.200 against
00:34:48.600 sanctions
00:34:49.040 on
00:34:49.240 Russia
00:34:49.500 that
00:34:51.000 doesn't
00:34:51.440 happen
00:34:51.760 I think
00:34:52.040 it's
00:34:52.260 the
00:34:52.420 second
00:34:52.700 time
00:34:53.240 since
00:34:53.520 he's
00:34:53.680 been
00:34:53.840 president
00:34:54.240 that
00:34:54.480 Biden
00:34:54.780 has
00:34:54.940 come
00:34:55.120 to
00:34:55.240 the
00:34:55.340 hill
00:34:55.520 right
00:34:55.840 it
00:34:56.260 is
00:34:56.460 really
00:34:57.000 unusual
00:34:57.620 I
00:34:58.420 had
00:34:58.600 two
00:34:58.920 Democratic
00:34:59.460 senators
00:34:59.900 who
00:35:00.120 told
00:35:00.400 me
00:35:00.540 they
00:35:00.660 were
00:35:00.760 going
00:35:00.880 to
00:35:00.960 vote
00:35:01.140 with
00:35:01.360 me
00:35:01.520 who
00:35:01.660 both
00:35:01.940 voted
00:35:02.200 against
00:35:02.500 me
00:35:02.760 who
00:35:03.680 both
00:35:04.120 told
00:35:04.540 me
00:35:04.780 they
00:35:04.960 said
00:35:08.540 a
00:35:09.780 personal
00:35:10.380 favor
00:35:10.920 would
00:35:11.260 we
00:35:11.960 vote
00:35:12.260 with
00:35:12.500 him
00:35:12.840 and
00:35:13.660 we
00:35:13.840 did
00:35:14.180 it
00:35:14.860 was

00:36:03.420 I
00:36:03.560 found
00:36:03.840 fascinating
00:36:04.560 was
00:36:05.580 the

00:36:18.820 shows
00:36:19.460 they
00:36:20.800 they

00:36:23.580 it
00:36:23.680 it
00:36:23.940 it
00:36:23.960 it
00:36:23.980 I
00:36:25.180 think
00:36:25.600 I
00:36:26.360 spoke
00:36:26.740 with
00:36:26.880 a
00:36:27.000 Democratic
00:36:27.380 senator
00:36:27.780 today
00:36:28.380 urging
00:36:29.640 this
00:36:30.100 is
00:36:30.280 a
00:36:30.440 way
00:36:30.640 out
00:36:31.020 look
00:36:31.880 revoke
00:36:32.420 the

00:36:33.100 all
00:36:33.440 lift
00:36:33.720 the
00:36:33.900 hold
00:36:34.320 but
00:36:34.920 one
00:36:35.120 of
00:36:35.220 the
00:36:35.320 reasons
00:36:35.620 that
00:36:35.920 ought
00:36:36.260 in
00:36:36.620 a
00:36:36.840 reasonable
00:36:37.380 and
00:36:37.600 rational
00:36:37.940 world
00:36:38.260 that
00:36:38.460 should
00:36:38.620 be
00:36:38.740 appealing
00:36:39.040 to
00:36:39.220 them
00:36:39.380 is
00:36:39.500 it
00:36:39.620 gets
00:36:39.940 them
00:36:40.200 somewhat
00:36:40.720 out
00:36:41.160 of
00:36:41.320 this
00:36:41.620 mess
00:36:42.240 that
00:36:43.120 that
00:36:43.440 Biden's
00:36:44.320 own
00:36:44.500 mistakes
00:36:44.900 have
00:36:45.060 created
00:36:45.400 Senator
00:36:46.220 that
00:36:46.640 is
00:36:46.940 a
00:36:47.420 hopeful
00:36:47.800 note
00:36:48.300 to
00:36:48.540 end
00:36:48.780 on
00:36:49.020 but
00:36:49.760 there's
00:36:49.960 a lot
00:36:50.140 more
00:36:50.280 to talk
00:36:50.580 about
00:36:50.720 of course
00:36:51.060 which is
00:36:51.400 why
00:36:51.700 you are
00:36:52.120 going to
00:36:52.400 be going
00:36:52.760 straight
00:36:53.100 from
00:36:53.300 this
00:36:53.580 you've
00:36:53.940 gone
00:36:54.040 straight
00:36:54.240 from
00:36:54.400 the
00:36:54.520 capital
00:36:54.900 straight

00:36:55.860 the
00:36:56.180 big
00:36:57.160 fight
00:36:57.440 that's
00:36:57.620 actually
00:36:57.860 going
00:36:58.120 on
00:36:58.500 in
00:36:59.200 the
00:36:59.360 Senate
00:36:59.560 playing
00:36:59.940 out
00:37:00.280 you know
00:37:00.740 all the way
00:37:01.180 around
00:37:01.380 the other
00:37:01.620 side
00:37:01.880 of the

00:37:16.640 Liz
00:37:17.240 what are
00:37:17.960 you
00:37:18.000 going
00:37:18.100 to
