00:00:00.000 G'day, I'm Derek Fildebrandt, publisher of the Western Standard, and you're watching
00:00:14.860 the Alberta Report, our daily updates on the Alberta campaign trail.
00:00:20.480 This is, well, word to your mother.
00:00:22.580 It's Mother's Day weekend coming up here, so happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out
00:00:28.500 there.
00:00:29.740 I'm joined as usual by Western Standard News Editor Dave Naylor.
00:00:33.340 Happy Friday, Derek.
00:00:34.560 Thank you.
00:00:35.340 And one of our Calgary reporters, the Western Standard's own, Sean Polzer.
00:00:41.760 Morning.
00:00:42.540 We're also going to be joined in a little bit by another one of our Calgary reporters, Jonathan Bradley.
00:00:48.600 We're going to talk about, I don't mean to sound like we're red baiting or red under every bed here,
00:00:54.400 But lots of communists, it seems, who are running under the NDP banner or involved in the NDP right now with communist ties.
00:01:03.860 We're going to talk about a former NDP candidate along with a self-proclaimed communist and another person who rushed the podium and disrupted a Danielle Smith-Prestor yesterday where she had to be whisked away by security.
00:01:18.180 The Western Standard's Jonathan Bradley has found evidence of a second NDP candidate in this election with Communist Party ties.
00:01:32.400 And we're going to talk about Rachel Notley's promise made yesterday evening of $1.2 billion in election goodies for Calgary.
00:01:41.680 Before I get into it, though, I just want to thank the Canadian Shooting Sports Association for their support of the show.
00:01:46.740 I've been a member of the CSSA for over a decade because they're Canada's leading firearms right group.
00:01:52.320 If you're a gun owner in Canada, you need to become a member.
00:01:54.920 Go to CSSA-CILA.org or Google them like I do and become a member.
00:01:59.960 It's worth every single penny.
00:02:02.040 Okay, Sean, we'll start with you.
00:02:05.660 You were all over this, I think, also working alongside Arthur Green, one of our reporters in Edmonton.
00:02:12.420 Yesterday, there was a disruption.
00:02:14.740 Danielle Smith was holding a press conference for some kind of, you know, making election stuff. 0.80
00:02:21.060 And while she was doing that, three people, who were, I guess, not her fans, rushed the stage.
00:02:29.920 Tell us about what happened there and who these people, you were able to uncover at least who two of these three people were.
00:02:36.920 Right.
00:02:38.620 Well, we were just about getting ready to go into the question period, and then all of a sudden there was a ruckus.
00:02:43.100 and a security guy came up behind me
00:02:45.580 and I was kind of wondering what the hell was going on.
00:02:48.140 And then I looked and so we had two people over here
00:02:52.160 and one guy ran up in front of the camera
00:02:54.180 and flashing his sign and his belly was sticking out
00:02:58.500 and the other two were being held back.
00:03:00.940 Danielle got whisked away. 0.92
00:03:03.120 The two candidates that were there apparently were...
00:03:06.460 They just kind of stood there looking around.
00:03:08.600 Security didn't care about them at all.
00:03:10.320 They were collateral damage.
00:03:13.680 Can you imagine like if it had been a more serious incident?
00:03:18.000 But it probably just dawned on at this point, like, the security doesn't give a shit about us.
00:03:25.200 Like, no one even paid attention to them.
00:03:28.560 You know, and then they kind of did their thing. And then everybody said, like, okay,
00:03:31.600 you can leave now. You know, you've made your point. Please go. And they did.
00:03:37.200 So tell us, you, as soon as this happened, I know the team here, you were working with Arthur Green in Edmonton, doing your best to identify them.
00:03:45.720 And you have, I think, a solid ID on at least two of the three people who rushed the stage.
00:03:52.200 Yeah. So one of them was an NDP candidate in the 2021 election, Patrick King.
00:04:00.440 Federal election.
00:04:01.500 Federal election. But he was also active in the provincial party as well.
00:04:05.040 So he had attended some of their policy conventions and made motions and things.
00:04:11.500 So it's hard to imagine that Team Rachel wouldn't know who this guy is.
00:04:16.140 I'm sure that he's pretty close to them in the party circles.
00:04:21.040 The second guy, the name escapes me, but he's an AFL.
00:04:25.160 Donkester?
00:04:26.600 AFL is Alberta Federation of Labor.
00:04:28.880 Yeah, so he's an Alberta Federation of Labor.
00:04:30.960 Arthur said he's showed up at protests on the ledge all the time, and he's quite well documented, his views are quite well documented.
00:04:39.960 So tell me about his views.
00:04:40.960 And he is definitely a communist.
00:04:42.960 Yeah, so tell us about this. He was sharing some kind of communist content, or is an openly declared, I think he called himself an anarcho-syndicalist.
00:04:51.960 Yeah.
00:04:52.960 Which is, I mean...
00:04:53.960 I've never heard the word before yesterday.
00:04:55.960 yesterday. I have heard of it, but it is, I would call it a micro ideology within broader
00:05:02.600 Marxism, communism. I won't get into the whole thing. I think it comes, I could be mistaken,
00:05:10.240 I think it comes from Gramsci, he was an Italian communist, but kind of before like the rise of
00:05:16.840 the Soviet Union solidified that version of communism, there was a couple competing theories
00:05:22.480 of communism, anarcho-syndicalism is a bizarre theory where you could have a communist state
00:05:30.400 without a government. I don't know, it's like having, I don't know, a sailboat without water,
00:05:40.080 it seems to me. It's a bit weird, but it is one of the, I'd say, schools of thought within broader
00:05:46.800 communist theory uh it's it's not a marxist leninist communism it's another kind of communism
00:05:53.760 sorry go ahead i was going to say and it's definitely documented he's he's made his views
00:05:57.600 well known so yeah i was going to say there's a picture of him that we found that he holding up
00:06:02.400 a book on rachel notley's father grant uh grant knowledge so he's a t-shirt of him with uh you
00:06:08.560 know chavez right and all those uh all those guys yeah but to me it's uh it's a bit concerning
00:06:15.760 Obviously, these guys are on the fringe and they're protesting something that isn't going to happen, right?
00:06:21.640 Daniel Smith is not selling hospitals.
00:06:23.980 Oh, yeah. So, yeah, we wouldn't even really get into what this was.
00:06:26.140 And that's what it was. Don't sell our hospital.
00:06:29.200 And they had signs Rocky View.
00:06:30.360 I want you to back up because the NDP have been alleging that Daniel Smith plans to sell the hospitals in Alberta.
00:06:36.320 Right. They took something she said as a private citizen in 2021, I believe, took it completely out of context
00:06:43.040 and put out a release on Wednesday, I think it was,
00:06:46.400 saying Daniel Smith wants to sell hospitals, which isn't true.
00:06:50.780 And the fact is there's been privately run hospitals in Alberta
00:06:54.220 for, what, more than a century now.
00:06:55.920 Longer than Alberta's existence.
00:06:56.800 Yeah, and, you know, Banff Mineral Springs is a private hospital.
00:07:00.940 So it was a big nothing burger, really, in terms of the election stuff.
00:07:05.500 But, you know, like Notley's charge that Albertans are going to pay to see a doctor,
00:07:11.340 this people are start people some people do believe it and these protesters obviously believed
00:07:16.480 it and stormed into this press conference and we're holding up the signs and it's ludicrous
00:07:22.120 because it's they're protesting something that is not going to happen and i think already we've seen
00:07:27.460 some a slight change today in the ucp plans as soon as we're done here uh sean's off to a press
00:07:33.180 conference in okotoks but they're not saying we're in okotoks for the general public you have to be
00:07:38.560 accredited member of the media to get the location. So they're already taking steps to try and stop
00:07:44.560 these bozos from wrecking more press conferences. And I got GPS coordinates.
00:07:50.880 Hope it's not in the middle of a lake somewhere. I hate Okotoks addresses because so much of it is,
00:07:57.440 this actually goes all the way to High River down there, they'll have like 934th Avenue or something
00:08:03.200 because they just continue from downtown Calgary. Even there are completely different municipalities
00:08:07.760 They decided like, ah, we don't need to, maybe they were 100 years ago, they were like, ah, someday we're going to get annexed by Calgary, and this way we won't have to adjust any street signs.
00:08:15.740 It's like 554.
00:08:17.740 Yeah, it's just these absolutely bonkers addresses down that area.
00:08:23.800 Okay, so let's be fair here.
00:08:25.320 These people were not, you know, representing the NDP.
00:08:30.440 Rachel Notley denies having sent them there.
00:08:34.220 I don't believe for a second she said, hey, guys, I want you to go down and crash this presser.
00:08:38.180 I don't think that'd be the case.
00:08:40.200 But some people are alleging that this was doxing.
00:08:43.360 The NDP put out a tweet saying, hey, Daniel Smith is going to be at this place at this time.
00:08:49.080 I mean, that was publicly available knowledge.
00:08:50.800 The UCP had said that this is happening.
00:08:53.500 But it is unusual for an opposition, you know, the other party to say this is where the leader is going to be at this time.
00:09:01.700 I don't know.
00:09:02.340 um but you know these people have very clear connections to the NDP very clear connections
00:09:08.020 but let's be fair there are crazy people in every political party UCP has got its nutters as well
00:09:14.900 and people who I mean I wouldn't be entirely shocked if you saw something similar from guys
00:09:19.780 who have some kind of connection to the UCP at some point do it uh now if some of them had
00:09:25.780 connections to the National Socialist Party of Canada and they were the Nazis I mean I think 0.76
00:09:30.180 think that'd be newsworthy. But I don't know. What's been the NDP and Rachel Notley's reaction
00:09:38.260 to what happened yesterday? Because it's, you know, a necessity to security whisking your way.
00:09:42.460 These guys weren't armed or anything, but we did just have an armed gunman at the legislature
00:09:46.200 days ago. Well, you know, and that was kind of my thought as well as like, you know, this has
00:09:53.100 the potential to get really nasty. Like if you've got guys at the ledge with guns and you don't
00:09:58.040 know and you're in a public place you know and they just rush the stage and and danielle has 1.00
00:10:04.820 all kinds of security like they're it's almost like the secret service in in the u.s you know
00:10:09.400 she comes out of the elevator she's got like five guys around her you know and it it seemed to me
00:10:14.320 that it had the potential to get ugly and there's just kind of a nasty undercurrent in the in the
00:10:21.020 whole campaign and you know the ndp aren't talking to us and it's you know it's so partisan but uh
00:10:27.520 Yeah. Surely an election would not be partisan. No, absolutely not, I guess. No, Rachel just kind of shrugged it off and, you know, took the high road, said that she would never do that. Like, and it's kind of like you said, I don't know that they actually sent these guys out there.
00:10:44.520 I almost certainly not. It's not a good look for the NDP, even if the NDP didn't have anything to do with it.
00:10:49.860 I really I really wouldn't imagine. Someone could make the argument they sort of incited it because they're spreading disinformation.
00:10:58.020 But I mean, all campaigns and all elections are going to bend the truth as far as they can for their own ends.
00:11:02.920 That's not a new thing. And, you know, alerting their supporters to the time and location where Smith is going to be.
00:11:10.120 That was a little weirder, but I mean, it's not untoward. It's just a little off.
00:11:16.220 You know, when I was in politics, I got a I used to get a fair number of death threats, some of them semi-credible.
00:11:21.540 And but I never wanted a security detail that cost taxpayers a bunch of money, hurts privacy.
00:11:26.280 So I put in an application just to be able to be my own security detail and carry a handgun.
00:11:32.160 RCP did not go for it. I just wanted to be I want to be my own secret service, save the taxpayers some money.
00:11:38.420 Walk around with a headpiece in all the time.
00:11:40.960 Yeah, no one will think of necessity to me.
00:11:42.560 They'll think I'm the guard.
00:11:44.900 I think that's what we should do,
00:11:46.340 is we should just train the politicians to, you know,
00:11:49.220 to conceal carry and let them defend themselves.
00:11:52.340 Jiu-jitsu.
00:11:54.080 Yeah.
00:11:55.040 Okay, well, we're going to switch up here.
00:11:58.220 Similar kind of topic, though.
00:11:59.760 We're going to bring in one of our Calgary reporters,
00:12:02.380 Jonathan Bradley, right now.
00:12:04.260 Jonathan, I know just a few days ago, you released a story with photos obtained of NDP two-term MLA and present candidate for the NDP, Rod Loyola.
00:12:19.540 It was known from before that he had had some weird sort of secular seance, church-style memorial for Hugo Chavez.
00:12:29.620 But you had just obtained photos of Rod Loyola marching in a communist party parade.
00:12:37.500 So not really dismissible as, I like a guy who is a communist, but I'm not a communist myself.
00:12:44.720 He was leading the parade, never mind marching on it.
00:12:47.000 Yeah, he was leading this communist delegation, I guess, in the parade for workers, World Revolution or whatnot.
00:12:53.820 But you released another story yesterday, a second NDP candidate.
00:13:00.940 Not necessarily proof that they were ever members of a communist party, but certainly very strong endorsements of communism and communist links.
00:13:09.900 Yes. So Alberta NDP candidate Diana Baden, she's running Calgary Acadia.
00:13:14.760 she retweeted a post commemorating American hacker Aaron Schwartz from an account which
00:13:19.860 praised communism. And the reason why I say that it was an account praising communism is because
00:13:25.080 the title of the account was Vote Communist May 4th. And next to the name on Twitter,
00:13:32.200 it had the hammer and sickle next to it. And yeah. So, you know, in an election, if a right
00:13:42.840 candidate, like a UCP candidate, had, I don't know, retweeted something from Vote Nazi May 4th
00:13:50.920 and had a swastika emoji. This would be, needless to say, a very big deal.
00:13:59.120 Has the NDP responded, issued any kind of apology or clarification, if you will,
00:14:06.120 about one of their candidates sharing communist material?
00:14:08.720 I haven't seen anything. No one's commented on neither. Same was similar with Rod Loyola's
00:14:15.300 ordeal. He or the NDP haven't commented on that incident. It's a repeated pattern of communism
00:14:21.560 within the NDP. Where is this candidate running? This candidate is running in Calgary, Acadia. So
00:14:28.140 Tyler Chandro is riding. Yeah. And we were just talking yesterday. That is a extremely tight race.
00:14:34.820 We've got Tyler Shandro there. He's a controversial figure. He was health minister under JC Kenney, who oversaw lockdowns and mandates. So he's got at least, you know, used to have at least a lot of people to his on his right side, very upset with him. Some are probably coming back. A lot of them probably come back to the UCP fold now, but it would not, it would take only possibly even a few dozen of them to stay at home to cost him and the UCP that seat.
00:15:01.320 And has there been any reaction from the UCP so far on the, I guess, I suppose, the second NDP candidate with communist links exposed?
00:15:12.820 nothing that i've seen so far but uh from what i've heard there are some uh people within the
00:15:18.340 ucp who are upset about this and who are who i've who have communicated with me telling me that if
00:15:25.620 this was a conservative that was you know like vote nazi may 4th it would be like it would be a
00:15:32.500 political career ender we kind of talked about this yesterday but we've still got to talk about it
00:15:38.900 Why the hell is the legacy and government funded media utterly uninterested that a party which stands a, you know, let's say 45% chance of forming government on May 29th.
00:15:53.900 Why are they so uninterested that a party, you know, a serious party with a chance of winning an election has now at least two candidates running under its banner, including one two term MLA, have clear links to an ideology and political party that killed more people in the 20th century than all other causes combined?
00:16:17.120 You know, it's mind-boggling to me.
00:16:19.360 I know when I was sitting on the assignment desk at the Calgary Sun and I saw a story like this, I would think, holy cow, we've got to try and match this.
00:16:27.980 We've got to do something on it and jump on it.
00:16:29.720 But Jonathan's had two excellent exclusives in the last two days, exposing serious communist ties to two NDP candidates and not a single word, crickets from the legacy media.
00:16:42.800 You know, it's disgraceful.
00:16:44.480 You worked at the Herald. I imagine definitely the old son, but probably even the old Herald, you know, before it's in its current iteration.
00:16:55.480 I imagine they would find it worth at least a sentence or two during an election that the official opposition party and a party that stands a reasonable shot of forming government as candidate supporting a totalitarian ideology running for it.
00:17:13.480 Is it just that if communism's okay, Nazism's not? 0.75
00:17:19.760 Yeah, you know, and I kind of thought that too
00:17:23.320 because I asked Danielle at the press conference yesterday
00:17:27.900 what her reaction was, you know, being compared to Hitler
00:17:30.740 when, you know, these people are actual avowed communists,
00:17:35.540 you know what I mean?
00:17:36.520 And it kind of struck me too that if you had a UCP candidate
00:17:40.920 that was an actual Nazi or Klan
00:17:43.880 and ran around with the hood
00:17:45.680 and everything like that,
00:17:46.940 it would be front page news.
00:17:48.560 And legitimately so.
00:17:49.980 Yeah.
00:17:50.640 It would be international news.
00:17:53.200 Right.
00:17:53.500 Yeah.
00:17:54.080 So there seems to be
00:17:55.260 a huge level of hypocrisy there.
00:17:57.660 I noticed on Linda Splodian's column
00:18:00.880 with Rachel and her Che watch.
00:18:03.900 Che Covira watch, yeah.
00:18:04.840 She doesn't wear that anymore.
00:18:06.280 No.
00:18:06.500 I think she only stopped wearing it
00:18:08.160 when she became premier
00:18:09.940 or very soon before.
00:18:12.460 But I think she was well-known
00:18:14.280 to wear the Che Guevara watch
00:18:15.400 until pretty much the time
00:18:17.040 she became premier.
00:18:18.100 You know, I say he's kind of trendy.
00:18:19.600 He's on T-shirts and, you know,
00:18:20.980 the young kids.
00:18:22.700 I see kids, you know,
00:18:23.820 and I see kids wear it like in university
00:18:25.660 and be like,
00:18:26.180 yeah, they're just idiots.
00:18:27.340 They don't really know.
00:18:28.940 It's a cool picture and stylized.
00:18:31.240 Most kids are just idiots
00:18:32.120 and don't know that he's a communist.
00:18:34.640 Rachel Nottingham knew
00:18:35.600 Che Guevara was a communist
00:18:36.980 and a violent one of that
00:18:38.660 when he committed tons of extrajudicial murders.
00:18:44.740 The only thing that could come from him
00:18:46.520 was he got shot in the ditch somewhere in Bolivia.
00:18:48.600 And the kids that are wearing those T-shirts
00:18:50.360 couldn't spell Che Guevara.
00:18:52.640 To be fair, I don't know if any of us could.
00:18:55.300 I definitely couldn't spell Che Guevara.
00:18:57.040 Che, I could spell Che.
00:18:58.520 That's about it, yeah.
00:18:59.760 Yeah.
00:19:00.660 Okay, thank you very much for joining us, Jonathan.
00:19:03.940 Moving on from the communists.
00:19:06.480 Assuming we don't have any more coming.
00:19:09.220 Ooh, hint, hint, nudge, nudge, say no more.
00:19:12.160 Stay tuned.
00:19:13.600 There's more communists coming.
00:19:15.920 The stories just aren't ready yet.
00:19:19.880 Sean, you were at Rachel Notley rally and press conference yesterday in the evening.
00:19:26.820 Yeah.
00:19:28.000 She had, I think, a fairly decent-sized crowd out there making promises for Calgary.
00:19:34.440 Yes, $1.2 billion. Big, huge, long list. Green LRT, 40 new schools, teachers, health care center. I can't even begin. There was about a half dozen items that were on there. Yeah, for sure. 1.2 billion.
00:19:52.680 All right.
00:19:53.160 Which is a pretty impressive number.
00:19:55.280 How's it going to pay? 40 schools sounds damn good on paper, but.
00:20:01.080 I'm starting to start picking up bottles, I guess. I don't know.
00:20:07.140 It's those both the two big parties, Dave, are promising.
00:20:12.400 You know, they're making it rain on Calgary.
00:20:13.860 Like none of this was unforeseen. Calgary is the battleground.
00:20:18.520 And that means Calgary gets showered with money.
00:20:21.340 And Calgary is the Alberta equivalent in a U.S. presidential election of what Florida used to be one, not anymore.
00:20:28.020 but say Ohio or Pennsylvania, the big swing ones,
00:20:31.540 and that's where the candidates spend all their time and make generally their promises.
00:20:35.280 So they're just showering money on Calgary.
00:20:39.860 Part of me thinks Rachel Notley's promise of showering money on Calgary
00:20:43.600 might actually go down a little bit better with Calgarians than Smith's,
00:20:47.620 because Smith's was mostly just the arena, this big thing.
00:20:51.540 The provincial money is for sprucing up the whole Rivers district.
00:20:55.660 It's a municipality that's putting money in to go directly for the arena.
00:20:59.700 But, I mean, it's more targeted for one part of Calgary and for people who have the money to go to Flames games.
00:21:07.500 Notley's Promise, though, is a bit more broad-based for Calgary.
00:21:11.060 Schools and hospitals and stuff, stuff that pretty much everyone is generally going to enjoy.
00:21:18.220 And it's a bigger price tag, but it's more broad-based.
00:21:21.820 I don't know, do you think it's, do you think her Calgary cash promise might actually go down better than Smith's?
00:21:32.500 It may do, Derek. I mean, there's something for everybody in there.
00:21:36.760 You know, teachers, LRT, everything.
00:21:40.160 But I think, don't forget, the arena deal is not popular with a lot of Calgarians.
00:21:45.600 It's about 50-50.
00:21:46.340 It's 50-50. And I think those same 50-50, the same people that are opposed to the Arena deal may be kind of opposed to Smith's deal as in terms, you know, where is this money coming from?
00:21:59.460 I mean, does it mean not least deal?
00:22:00.800 Not least deal, I'm sorry. You know, that's a lot of money. Where is it going to come from? How is it going to affect my taxes?
00:22:08.160 So, you know what? Every promise could help, but they could also backfire.
00:22:13.260 and any mention uh from notley about where the money comes from or is this just
00:22:18.220 there's been oils gushing and it will always gush will always be swimming in money that seems to be
00:22:23.900 the assumption and oil is not exactly what's oil like right now today it's about 71 bucks today
00:22:28.140 which is above water but it's been going up and down yeah what did they budget for 76 wasn't it
00:22:34.300 uh 75 i think to break even 79 to post a two billion dollar surplus so if you think 1.2
00:22:39.860 billion for Calgary. We are definitely out of the money. Every party says, I'm going to get us off
00:22:44.480 the oil roller coaster. And no party ever does anything because it's a four-year election cycle.
00:22:54.040 It's impossible for a political party on a four-year election cycle to be thinking in terms
00:22:57.540 of 20, 30, 40, 50 years long-term stuff. Everyone talks about it because we all know that's the
00:23:02.660 right thing to do. But voters, when you put it to voters, do you want long-term prudent planning
00:23:08.940 or do you want the shiny thing right here, right now?
00:23:12.640 99% of the time, they pick the shiny thing.
00:23:15.880 I suppose it's just human nature and one of the defects in democracy.
00:23:22.000 Okay, well, that's it for today's Alberta Report.
00:23:25.120 Again, happy Mother's Day to all you mothers, all the husbands, sons, dads out there.
00:23:32.740 Don't forget, you've been warned.
00:23:35.020 I'm already on top of it.
00:23:36.280 Thank you very much.
00:23:37.560 We'll see you on the next episode of Alberta Report, and God bless.
