00:00:00.500 As we continue to uncover the unspeakable level of brutality used by Hamas, including
00:00:06.320 horrific scenes of sexual violence, our hearts break for every life that has been stolen,
00:00:14.440 and for their loved ones whose lives have been forever changed.
00:00:19.740 From the very beginning, we have said that Israel has the right to defend itself.
00:00:25.400 And how Israel defend itself matters.
00:00:29.200 It matters for the future of both Israelis and Palestinians, and it matters for the future
00:00:35.160 of the region.
00:00:37.580 Since October 7, over 18,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed in Gaza.
00:00:45.640 Thousands of children are now orphans.
00:00:49.080 Countless Palestinian civilians in Gaza are suffering without water, food, fuel, or medicine.
00:00:56.380 And their homes have been reduced to rubble.
00:01:01.520 We must recognize that what is unfolding before our eyes will only enhance the cycle of violence.
00:01:11.780 This will not lead to the durable defeat of Hamas, which is necessary, and the threat that it
00:01:18.760 pauses to Israel.
00:01:21.720 With the future of Israelis and Palestinians in mind, Canada is joining the international
00:01:28.140 call for a humanitarian ceasefire.
00:01:31.760 We are not naïve.
00:01:35.180 This ceasefire cannot be one-sided.
00:01:38.640 Hamas continues to hold hostages, use civilians as shields, and attack Israel.
00:01:47.440 Hostages must be released immediately.
00:01:50.900 This must be protected, and foreign nationals, including, of course, Canadians, must be allowed
00:01:56.780 to leave Gaza.
00:01:59.320 Hamas must lay down its weapons.
00:02:03.700 At the same time, we must urgently and seriously commit ourselves to working with Israelis, Palestinians,
00:02:12.040 and other partners towards a just and lasting peace in the form of a two-state solution, where
00:02:20.100 Israelis and Palestinians will be able to live side-by-side in peace and security.
00:02:27.720 This weekend, I hosted my counterparts from Saudi Arabia, from Turkey, and the Palestinian
00:02:33.340 Authority to discuss just that.
00:02:36.680 And I've been in contact with Jordan, with France, with New Zealand, with Australia, with
00:02:42.780 the UK and the US over the past two days.
00:02:47.720 And we will continue that conversation over the coming months with our partners from the
00:02:52.920 region.
00:02:56.060 Palestinians and Israelis have a right to build their future and their dreams.
00:03:01.480 They have the right to a sustainable future for themselves and for future generations.
00:03:06.620 Palestinians to come.
00:03:08.600 How we respond and act today and tomorrow will have direct impacts on that future.
00:03:15.660 And we are committed to being a responsible and reliable partner in the work to help build
00:03:22.560 it.
