Summary

A scandal that only reaches the third-tier of legacy media outlets in Canada, and doesn't even make the top headlines in the main news outlets. Why? Because it's not even making the top news in Canada right now.

00:00:00.000 So in any other country, it would take a government down.
00:00:04.360 In Canada, it's not even making the top headlines with legacy media outlets.
00:00:08.600 Right now, there's some pretty solid evidence that the Prime Minister's office
00:00:11.940 may have directly pressured RCMP Commissioner Brenda Luckey
00:00:15.000 to interfere with the active investigation into the worst mass shooting in Canadian history
00:00:20.140 to score political points.
00:00:22.760 Now, some colonists out there have taken up the cause and are writing on this scandal,
00:00:25.980 but many others are trying to direct rage towards the faux scandal of Conservative MPs
00:00:31.400 who offered parliamentary tours to some activists.
00:00:34.200 It's the journalistic version of shouting,
00:00:36.240 hey squirrel, in hopes of distracting the public eye from an issue they don't want to gain traction.
00:00:41.540 Other reporters are busy offering fawning coverage of Prime Minister Trudeau
00:00:44.700 as he tours Africa and dodges questions on the scandal.
00:00:48.700 This is the sort of journalism that subsidized media buys,
00:00:52.080 with the government dangling hundreds of millions in tax subsidies in front of media outlets
00:00:55.960 and of course subsidizing the state broadcaster to the tune of $1.4 billion a year,
00:01:00.600 there's little appetite among the media outlets to upset the apple cart.
00:01:04.580 The Liberal government has created a system where media outlets have to apply
00:01:07.540 and be accredited as official with this nebulous closed-door committee.
00:01:12.160 If an outlet isn't considered to be an official media outlet,
00:01:14.260 they won't qualify for the myriad of subsidies and handouts.
00:01:17.700 With the rules for qualification not being clearly defined,
00:01:20.080 media dependent on these handouts are pretty motivated to avoid annoying the government
00:01:24.620 lest they suddenly lose that accreditation.
00:01:27.520 Just as a side note, the Western Standard applied for accreditation
00:01:30.100 and we were accepted, by the way.
00:01:32.900 We then refused the applications for the subsidies.
00:01:35.560 We just wanted to see if we could do it.
00:01:37.140 We won't give away our independence for handouts.
00:01:39.780 This method, though, of keeping the media in line appears to be working like a charm.
00:01:43.820 If such a disgraceful scandal
00:01:46.140 as Prime Ministerial interference into a mass murder investigation
00:01:49.380 were breaking 10 years ago,
00:01:51.320 the Prime Minister would be swarmed with reporters at every stop
00:01:53.820 and they'd be demanding answers.
00:01:55.160 The issue would top every headline
00:01:56.920 and an independent inquiry would be struck into the matter within days.
00:02:00.800 Today?
00:02:01.820 We're seeing a little outrage expressed on Twitter
00:02:03.780 and a few columns cutting into the issue.
00:02:05.200 That's about it.
00:02:05.680 But if Trudeau slithers out of this scandal, as he has with many others,
00:02:09.980 he'll continue on his authoritarian path of controlling media and information.
00:02:14.040 Those C-11 and C-18 are still quietly moving through Parliament
00:02:17.360 and if they pass, Canada will be second only to other nations like North Korea and China
00:02:21.120 as far as government control of information in the media and on social media are concerned.
00:02:25.640 Academics like Michael Geist have been ringing alarm bells
00:02:28.280 on this government effort to control information and discourse for years.
00:02:32.660 But a meek legacy media will barely talk about it.
00:02:35.980 Just think of the ramifications.
00:02:37.800 If this story that only reaches the third tier of legacy media attention right now,
00:02:42.820 what this is leading to.
00:02:45.440 Senior RCMP officials have stated that while the 22 bodies
00:02:48.500 of the victims of the Nova Scotia mass shootings had barely cooled yet,
00:02:52.060 the commissioner of the RCMP was bypassing communication protocols,
00:02:55.220 apparently on the behalf of the Prime Minister's office.
00:02:57.360 She was pushing for the early release of evidence to the public
00:03:01.000 in the investigation in order to help Trudeau push some gun control legislation he was cooking.
00:03:06.200 She very well could have damaged the investigation
00:03:08.760 and at the very least she should resign.
00:03:11.300 As it stands right now, Commissioner Luckey is still comfortable in her job
00:03:15.180 and the Prime Minister just said,
00:03:17.380 nah, I didn't have anything to do with it and he's moved on.
00:03:19.500 Since he's hiding overseas right now, MPs can't question him in Parliament
00:03:22.360 and Canada's pathetic legacy media corps aren't working terribly hard
00:03:25.960 to put the questions to him either.
00:03:27.780 If Justin Trudeau skates past this scandal,
00:03:30.400 much of the reason will be due to a broken media environment.
00:03:33.120 It also indicates that virtually no scandal can take this guy down.
00:03:36.640 Just think of what sort of governance we can look forward to
00:03:39.460 with Trudeau confident in the knowledge that he's politically invincible.
00:03:43.980 It's scary, guys.
00:03:45.140 If this doesn't take him down, what will?
00:03:47.300 What will?
