00:00:00.000 we're at the global energy show with uh garepreet leil uh president of inserva yes
00:00:06.720 but uh it used to be petroleum services association of canada way back in the day
00:00:11.120 way back well way back to two years ago two years ago i'll show you how long i've been
00:00:19.200 um so we we were just talking about uh the show and how it's been going on forever and ever and
00:00:25.680 ever and one of the things that the show used to have these big displays of uh all this iron that
00:00:31.360 was out in the yard of the big rigs and the service rates and so the it's the show has always been kind
00:00:37.840 of focused on petroleum services absolutely so um what's what's your take on it now um i think
00:00:46.000 it still has that focus it's just you don't see the big machinery out in the park as you'll see that
00:00:51.200 in the parking lot you don't see a lot of the rigs here you don't see a lot of um
00:00:55.680 trucking equipment etc but you do hear about what's taking place and you know when we look
00:01:02.000 at how industry is transformed rail field services is transforming too and that's you know in the
00:01:07.120 energy services side supply and manufacturing side so you won't see as big of a footprint when it comes
00:01:13.040 to equipment um but the difference in this year is you know a lot of our members were here in the fall
00:01:19.760 so i think that that caused a little bit of an issue too to try to figure out how how do you do two
00:01:25.040 energy related shows in the same year um the patrolling congress yeah right so we were laughing
00:01:32.800 because the services guys are you know you think of them in the coveralls and the pickup trucks and
00:01:37.280 the ones that are driving around you know out in the countryside and now the whole industry is going
00:01:41.840 you know high tech information services and more like energy obviously it must have been a reason
00:01:49.440 why you were grounded right well we were rounded for a number of reasons a you know our membership
00:01:54.720 was actually diversifying their business units and and then we were attracting new forms of energy
00:02:00.080 membership into into the association and they needed a place where they could see themselves and if
00:02:05.840 you're just called petroleum then you're not bringing people in and we wanted to make sure that
00:02:11.280 we were catching up with our membership that was already leading the way on innovation and so we went
00:02:16.080 through a full rebranding exercise and we came up with inserva which represents energy services client
00:02:22.640 manufacturing but it's also in service up we're in service of our members and we wanted to make sure that
00:02:29.120 you know when we developed a logo it showcased our membership that works you know on getting energy out of the
00:02:34.960 ground above ground and in the air and uh we're hoping that this is what takes us into the next
00:02:40.800 decade excellent um so what's your take on the show um the show's been really good in terms of making
00:02:47.360 connections and ensuring that we can connect our members with certain companies that are working
00:02:52.320 from different countries um i think from an industry point of view there's been a lot of emphasis on
00:02:59.200 technology and innovation and that's where our members play like i always say we represent the
00:03:04.240 energy side of innovators and solution finders and those are our members so i like that they have
00:03:09.840 that that theme in this year's uh conference and show um i think we we'd love to see more participation
00:03:17.360 obviously coming in from international but understanding that there's been competing priorities to
00:03:23.680 to make it here so yeah and there was the pandemic yeah and you know we all know about the cycles in
00:03:30.800 the industry going up well the industry is always ebb and flowed for sure but i think we're in a space
00:03:36.720 right now that's actually keeping a consistent growth in in energy and and the fact that you know we so we
00:03:44.880 launched this campaign called pink energy and the whole reason behind that was we wanted everybody to start
00:03:51.040 thinking about energy a little differently like why are we constantly defending an industry that
00:03:57.680 people should be celebrating and that's why i was like oh enough nobody else is going to do it we'll
00:04:03.120 do it as an association and we need people to start thinking about energy whether you're going into
00:04:08.880 artificial intelligence you're going into machine learning you're looking at labor jobs skilled trades
00:04:14.720 you need to think about energy you want to think about a long-term career path and a fruitful career
00:04:21.280 think about energy and that has to do with like you know you look at new canadians a lot of them don't
00:04:26.800 most of them don't know what energy services fire manufacturing companies are and what they offer
00:04:32.640 we look at a lot of women who are thinking it's like my dad's energy time and not our my daughter's
00:04:40.000 future energy and we wanted them to understand like energy is has evolved it's always been transforming
00:04:48.240 we've just never talked about it now we're talking about so so are you doing some of those things
00:04:53.200 going into the universities and schools yeah absolutely so part of our advocacy is to advocate
00:04:58.640 at the university level to talk about what energy really is so my daughter goes to western university
00:05:05.680 and she took uh an environmental science class and she came home after her first year and she said you know
00:05:11.680 mom what you talk about and what we're getting taught there's a huge disconnect and so that's when we
00:05:18.160 said oh we're doing a disservice to industry if we don't go into universities and start talking about
00:05:24.800 what's available how do career paths from engineering or bachelor's of science or if you're in a trade
00:05:31.840 school what do those career paths look like and so we've been doing a lot of that we also launched um under
00:05:38.320 the umbrella of think energy we launched a portal called working energy because we wanted to provide
00:05:44.800 uh training one-stop training place we wanted to make sure that the portal provided job matches
00:05:50.720 and we didn't want to do the same old same old anymore if our members are innovating then as an
00:05:56.240 association we have to come up with new technology and this is an opportunity for students to upload their
00:06:01.280 profiles they'll get matched with jobs and if they're not qualified that's okay because it'll showcase what
00:06:07.840 do they need to get um what certificates do they need to get whether it's safety or not and then
00:06:12.560 they got matched with the right employer or they got matched with employers that are willing to train
00:06:16.080 them excellent um so how is that situation in terms of uh workforce um are there a lot of shortages
00:06:25.200 absolutely like listen covet hits not the international pandemic oil went down to negative dollar a
00:06:33.440 barrel um we lost a lot of people and then there was this whole rhetoric that was out there in
00:06:39.840 community in in the canadian community in north america that oil and gas was a dying industry and
00:06:46.400 don't go get jobs there because we gotta transition people away from oil and gas and it's like
00:06:51.920 no like that's not the case and so we had a lot of students that were like there's no future for me so
00:06:57.840 why am i going to go into this sector and you know now we're saying great now we have this gap
00:07:03.600 that we gotta fill and we need to attract students we need to attract different markets that have
00:07:09.040 never looked at this sector before to say there is opportunity here lots of opportunity like for the
00:07:15.040 service side we have upwards of three thousand four thousand jobs that were vacant and that's why we
00:07:20.320 thought we need to do something about this and creating a portal that's just for industry developed by
00:07:26.480 industry made the most amount of sense and um you know that's one of the things that we've been
00:07:32.160 hearing around here too like a lot of the industries becoming a lot more environmentally focused as well
00:07:38.160 yeah social responsibility that kind of thing absolutely we've all so should appeal to young people
00:07:42.960 it's and that's what i'm saying like industry's always been conscious in terms of the last decade on
00:07:50.160 that i can speak to um when it comes to environmental standards like you look compare canada against
00:07:56.160 the rest of the world of oil producing countries we are the best um difference is we're also very
00:08:02.400 humble we're very canadian so we don't talk about everything but the the transition and transformation
00:08:09.200 that we've made and now we're talking about it because it's in the forefront it's huge like we're
00:08:15.040 we're drilling 70 to 80 percent more with 49 percent less usage of equipment and that's like 1.7 or 1.8
00:08:27.760 million acres of land that's going to be and those are the things that we want to get out there so
00:08:33.440 even on the environment side our members we're facing you know there's the esg reports that insurance
00:08:39.760 companies are looking for financial institutions are looking for then it transitioned into sustainability
00:08:45.840 reports and it became a process where we're like our customers have to do this now our companies are
00:08:53.440 going to have to do this so let's get ahead of that a little bit so we launched um an esg portal called
00:08:59.840 one path so we could all get on the same path report the same way and it gives an opportunity for
00:09:05.600 our companies to get ahead of the data cool uh so how would you sum up the future
00:09:13.120 where we're going to be like 10 years from now at this show so the future is bright i will say that
00:09:18.960 for industry um you know i never quote the iea but i can't believe i'm going to do this um they there's
00:09:27.040 one graph that i actually stole from them and utilized where they they showcase that oil and gas is
00:09:33.360 remaining steadfast until 2050 and beyond while we bring renewables new forms of energy into the mix
00:09:41.840 like it just can't happen all at once and we're all working together to do better and to ensure that
00:09:47.360 our future generation actually has access to energy like our number one goal should be making sure that
00:09:54.960 canadians don't face energy poverty but they're also unlocking canadian energy to make the world a
00:10:00.320 better place because as canadians that's our job excellent thank you very much well thank you that was fun
