01:44:03.320 Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to Rogers Place in Edmonton.
01:44:11.800 I would also like to welcome those who are joining us through broadcast.
01:44:16.020 I'm Sergeant Aubrey Zalasky, and I'm deeply honoured to be your Master of Ceremonies this afternoon.
01:44:22.140 Before we begin, I would ask that you please turn off your cell phones and not take any photos,
01:44:27.600 unless you are a designated photographer or member of the funeral coordinating team.
01:44:32.060 I would like to start by acknowledging members of the Jordan and Ryan families who are here with us today.
01:44:39.900 On behalf of Chief Dale McPhee and all members of the Edmonton Police Service, I want to extend our deepest condolences and thank you for sharing this day with us.
01:44:54.580 I would also like to acknowledge the following dignitaries who are present with us here today.
01:44:59.120 Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, and his Honour, Dr. Zaheer Lakhani.
01:45:09.660 The Honourable Daniel Smith, Premier of the Province of Alberta.
01:45:15.220 The Honourable Mike Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services.
01:45:21.900 The Honourable Rachel Notley, Leader of the Official Opposition.
01:45:25.940 The Honourable Marco Mendocino, Minister of Public Safety for the Government of Canada.
01:45:34.020 His Worship, Amarjeet Sohi, Mayor of the City of Edmonton.
01:45:39.560 And Chief of Police, Dale McFay, and distinguished guests.
01:45:45.920 Today we gather as a grateful community to grieve the loss and celebrate the lives of two Edmonton police officers
01:45:53.200 killed in the line of duty on March 16th, 2023.
01:45:58.680 During today's ceremony, you will learn about Constables Travis Jordan and Brett Ryan
01:46:04.040 and their impact as police officers, citizens, and loved ones.
01:46:10.300 Although today is a regimental police funeral,
01:46:13.680 we want to acknowledge the sacrifice and contribution of all emergency responders,
01:46:18.140 many of whom knew Travis and Brett and worked alongside them at various calls.
01:46:23.200 You as emergency responders shared the same calling as them, to help others and keep our
01:46:30.400 city and its people safe.
01:46:33.660 Over the past 10 days, Travis and Brett have best been remembered for the uniform that
01:46:38.260 they proudly wore and the ultimate sacrifice they made in doing so.
01:46:44.420 While it's true that the uniform is a large piece of their identity, today you will learn
01:46:49.640 how they were so much more than the badge that they carried.
01:46:53.840 At the end of today's ceremony, each of you will walk out of these doors,
01:46:58.520 carrying a piece of their legacy with you.
01:47:01.500 You will understand what drove these exceptional men to become police officers,
01:47:05.840 and when asked to do so, willingly and unselfishly lay down their lives for our community.
01:47:13.120 You will also learn of the qualities that made Travis and Brett beloved by so many
01:47:17.100 in their lives outside of their squad car.
01:47:19.640 To begin our memorial today, the Edmonton Police Service would like to acknowledge the land and territory that we stand on here today.
01:47:29.080 The Edmonton Police Service, located on the traditional homelands and gathering grounds of the Cree, Dene, Anishinawa Bay, Blackfoot, Papa Chase, Nakota Sioux, Kianyan Kaha, and the Métis people,
01:47:45.740 would like to acknowledge the signatories and descendants of Treaty 6 territory.
01:47:52.800 The trooping of colours will now occur, and drum major James McLeod will place the drums.
01:47:59.980 The process of trooping colours over a drum is derived from the ritual of creating an altar with the drums and colours on the battlefield
01:48:07.860 when a building or church was not feasible.
01:48:10.620 Colours were a visual representation of the unit or regiment's history, traditions, and pride.
01:48:19.360 Their display atop the drum set was the most significant gesture that could be created on the field of battle
01:48:25.140 to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice being made by the fallen.
01:48:30.120 I would invite everyone to please stand.
01:48:34.980 Saluting the colours is not required as the precedence is given to the fallen.
01:48:40.620 Parade!
01:48:43.140 Attention! 0.86
01:48:46.940 Drum Corps!

02:08:23.860 I would now like to welcome City of Edmonton Chaplain John Dowds
02:08:28.200 to lead us all in an opening prayer.
02:08:37.940 As has been expressed by so many people,
02:08:56.080 my deepest sympathy to Travis and Brett's families,
02:09:01.160 to Annie and to Ashley,
02:09:05.340 to parents Bob and Lori,
02:09:07.940 and Judy and Hubert and all of your families
02:09:12.380 and to your extended family, the Edmonton Police Service
02:09:17.580 and also the communities that you call home.
02:09:24.720 Words cannot adequately express what you are feeling
02:09:28.580 or the journey that you are on.
02:09:31.920 Words cannot adequately express the love and concern
02:09:35.740 that we all have for you
02:09:37.780 that fills the air in this place
02:09:40.380 and beyond this place.
02:09:43.740 But words are what we have
02:09:46.820 and gestures of love
02:09:48.960 are what we have.
02:09:54.980 And in the midst of this
02:09:56.940 unpredictable journey of grief,
02:10:00.320 sometimes the words that you've heard
02:10:02.780 or may hear can be rocks on which you stand
02:10:06.800 or railings that you can hold on to
02:10:10.640 when grief comes rushing over and overwhelms
02:10:15.040 every piece of your being.
02:10:21.960 Here are some words now. They're in the form of a
02:10:24.860 prayer. Pray them with me
02:10:28.820 if that is what fits for all of you
02:10:30.920 and is a part of your spiritual journey.
02:10:34.960 If not, then perhaps seize these moments
02:10:38.940 to reflect on the words
02:10:41.060 and take what you need
02:10:44.080 and what you want today
02:10:46.180 and leave the rest.
02:10:52.180 Let us pray.
02:10:56.900 To you, O Holy One,
02:10:58.680 known by many names and yet beyond
02:11:00.620 all names, we bring these prayers.
02:11:04.700 We gather here to remember
02:11:06.460 Constable Travis Jordan and Constable
02:11:08.860 Brett Ryan, loving
02:11:10.580 husbands, sons,
02:11:12.940 siblings, family members, friends
02:11:14.760 to so many
02:11:15.660 called to serve,
02:11:19.320 devoted to service.
02:11:21.980 For their
02:11:22.800 courage and their deep commitment,
02:11:24.720 we give you thanks.
02:11:25.600 for their families we pray that they will be strengthened
02:11:30.840 by the love and compassion that surrounds them here today and beyond
02:11:34.940 and by the presence of your spirit
02:11:37.280 for the Edmonton Police Service
02:11:42.160 an intrinsic part of the fabric of our community
02:11:46.700 people call to serve and protect
02:11:49.140 we give thanks
02:11:50.840 and today perhaps like no other day
02:11:54.540 We offer our deep gratitude for our police officers, who they are, the work they do with such dedication and bravery.
02:12:09.140 For all our first responders, we offer our prayers, law enforcement across our country, fire rescue, emergency medical services, and our military personnel.
02:12:19.200 people who have answered the call to protect and serve
02:12:24.080 and take care of
02:12:25.540 and even sacrifice themselves for others
02:12:29.020 we offer our deep gratitude for all of them
02:12:34.540 here in Edmonton
02:12:35.440 across our province
02:12:36.800 throughout our nation and beyond
02:12:38.740 and for Edmonton we pray
02:12:45.720 a community
02:12:47.760 a family
02:12:50.500 and this family
02:12:53.060 when one hurts, everybody hurts
02:12:54.780 when one is in need, family gathers
02:12:56.880 together to help and support
02:12:58.340 we've done that
02:12:59.920 may it continue and be
02:13:02.680 sown into the very fabric of who we are
02:13:05.000 be with us, O Holy One
02:13:09.160 here in this place
02:13:10.200 as we mourn the tragic loss of
02:13:12.820 Brett and Travis
02:13:13.680 and as we give thanks for who they were
02:13:17.260 and the legacies they leave for all of us.
02:13:22.500 These are our prayers.
02:13:25.720 Amen.
02:13:36.180 Thank you, Chaplain Dowse.
02:13:38.820 To offer condolences on behalf of the Edmonton Police Association
02:13:42.660 is President Curtis Hoople.
02:13:44.520 Good afternoon.
02:13:59.720 I'm honoured to be here today on behalf of the Edmonton Police Association.
02:14:03.960 As a 20-year sworn member and a representative for almost 2,000 police officers,
02:14:08.560 I want to convey some brief words of support to the families of Constable Travis Jordan,
02:14:16.360 Constable Brett Ryan, and our entire police family.
02:14:20.920 Senseless is a word that fits this moment.
02:14:25.380 Accepting loss that cannot be easily explained can tear at us.
02:14:30.740 It's hard to accept, and it creates difficult motions to heal.
02:14:35.040 To the Jordan and Ryan families, the entire police family here today and worldwide mourns with you and is deeply sorry for your loss.
02:14:49.240 We all want you to know they were loved, respected, admired, and damn great cops.
02:14:59.140 Travis was a stellar man.
02:15:00.800 he showed up for people at every moment of his career
02:15:03.940 with care and compassion and without hesitation
02:15:07.020 even in the most challenging circumstances
02:15:10.360 Brett was an outstanding man
02:15:12.820 and a valued member of our family
02:15:14.740 he was driven, focused, intelligent
02:15:17.860 and relentless in his service
02:15:20.060 they were both the best of us
02:15:23.260 we all want to honour their sacrifice
02:15:26.000 and find meaning in this moment
02:15:27.720 We all owe Travis and Brett the commitment to cement their legacy into the pillar of strength that burns their internal flame in our hearts and across our city.
02:15:39.220 To my police family, since March 16th's event, you have continued your duties while trying to comprehend the gravity of what happened to our colleagues.
02:15:50.460 Losing our brothers reminds us of our social contract we carry as a part of our uniform.
02:15:55.860 Their ultimate sacrifice is a stinging reminder of how important it is not to underestimate the dangers of our job while still offering compassion to the communities we serve.
02:16:10.460 Today we stand witness to the sad fact that sometimes the terms of this contract are paid with the ultimate sacrifice.
02:16:18.520 Consul Jordan and Consul Ryan fulfilled their service to the ultimate measure.
02:16:23.000 For this, we owe them our gratitude and our relentless protection of the police service and the community that they honoured with their very lives.
02:16:34.200 As we leave here today, remember to support each other while taking time to attend to your grief.
02:16:41.440 To the Jordan and Ryan families, this police family is here for you and is committed to never forgetting.
02:16:53.000 To Travis and Ryan, you'll be dearly missed.
02:16:59.580 Rest easy, brothers, and let your police colleagues take it from here.
02:17:03.880 Thank you.
02:17:10.820 Thank you, Sergeant Hoople.
02:17:13.640 I am pleased to now welcome Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani,
02:17:18.880 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, to come forward and offer condolences.
02:17:23.000 thank you good afternoon I would like to begin by offering my most heartfelt condolences
02:17:45.520 to the family, friends, and colleagues
02:17:49.760 of Constable Travis Jordan and Constable Brett Ryan.
02:17:55.960 Please know that you are not alone.
02:18:02.360 Your fellow Edmontonians, Albertans, and Canadians,
02:18:07.900 and people from around the world stand beside you today.
02:18:13.480 we are heartbroken by their loss
02:18:18.320 and we are holding you in our thoughts
02:18:21.880 and prayers for comfort and solace
02:18:26.260 the tragic deaths of these two brave men
02:18:31.540 was a harsh reminder to us all
02:18:35.140 of the very real risks
02:18:38.140 that our heroes in uniform face
02:18:41.940 in order to keep us safe.
02:18:47.120 It takes great personal sacrifice
02:18:51.000 and considerable heart
02:18:54.140 to put your own well-being on the line
02:18:58.340 so that others can live in peace and security.
02:19:06.260 The best police officers
02:19:09.460 bring tremendous courage and a high level of skill, strength, and determination to the job.
02:19:21.040 And Constables Jordan and Ryan lived up to that high standard each and every day.
02:19:31.060 They cared deeply about this community, and they served with intelligence, integrity, and honor.
02:19:42.720 I have learned from those who knew them that Travis and Brett also shared a remarkable ability
02:19:53.020 to connect with those who were in trouble or experiencing trauma,
02:20:00.180 always taking the time to let people know that they were heard and understood.
02:20:08.480 They treated everyone they met with empathy, warmth, and compassion, and that made all the difference to people in need.
02:20:23.780 We were truly fortunate to have had them among us, even if it was for far too short a time.
02:20:35.080 While nothing we say or do can take away the pain that comes with such a terrible loss,
02:20:45.120 I hope that all who are grieving for Travis and Brett can find some measure of comfort in knowing that their legacies will live on.
02:20:59.660 We will remember them always for the remarkable spirit they brought to their duties
02:21:07.440 and for the countless people who they helped and the lives they saved over the course of their careers.
02:21:17.920 Above all, their enduring legacies will live on in the love and friendship they shared with those who were fortunate enough to have had them in their lives.
02:21:35.980 They will be deeply missed by all who knew them
02:21:40.700 and forever honored by a grateful city, province, and country.
02:21:49.500 I offer my deep gratitude to members of the Edmonton Police Service
02:21:55.080 and to all of our Albertan and Canadian frontline heroes in uniform
02:22:01.920 for your sustained service.
02:22:06.160 Again, to the family members of our two brave heroes,
02:22:13.500 please know that they will never be forgotten.
02:22:19.100 They will remain in our hearts
02:22:21.600 and be forever celebrated in our history.
02:22:27.280 As someone who came to Canada from another part of the world and who has come to deeply appreciate the safety and security we enjoy in this country, I can say this.
02:22:44.580 It is only because of the daily courage, commitment, and dedication to their profession of those like our two young heroes who gave their all for us, that what we each take so much for granted every day is even possible.
02:23:09.320 may constables jordan and ryan rest in peace and may we continue to honor them through our
02:23:19.360 shared commitment to fostering the strong hopeful and peaceful society they believed in
02:23:29.440 a society that represents the best of their brave and caring spirits
02:23:37.980 and the best of who we are as a people.
02:23:44.520 Thank you.
02:23:45.640 thank you your honor for those moving words
02:24:00.920 we will now have eulogies in honor of constable jordan
02:24:05.660 i would like to first invite brody sampson to the podium
02:24:09.220 Wow.
02:24:29.420 Wow.
02:24:37.160 Good afternoon, all.
02:24:39.220 I am grateful to see so many here today.
02:24:43.720 Travis would have been in awe of this outpouring of love and support from the law enforcement, military, and first responder communities, as well as his family and friends.
02:24:58.020 I also want to pay my respects to the family, friends, and loved ones of Constable Brett Ryan, who we also grieve for today.
02:25:05.540 my name is Brody Sampson and I'm fortunate to count myself as one of Travis's closest friends
02:25:14.120 it's difficult being up here today for a lot of reasons normally I'd call Travis
02:25:21.340 for advice on this sort of thing with him gone I'm left to wing it without my navigator here
02:25:27.400 to guide me with just a few minutes I hope I can do his story justice
02:25:32.500 who was travis jordan travis was from a small community of colbrook nova scotia
02:25:39.560 where he grew up in a close family he was loved and nurtured by his parents judy and hubert
02:25:45.600 and his big sister sheena who adored him travis was the resident hero to his nieces
02:25:52.920 and nephew kenzie kiara and reese and of course nanny seeley
02:25:58.720 his family knew him the longest the deepest and the very best for those of you who didn't know
02:26:07.100 travis i hope i can introduce you judy and hubert were dedicated parents working hard to ensure
02:26:15.060 travis and sheena were well cared for and even more well loved they raised travis to be the man
02:26:21.340 that we all loved.
02:26:24.500 Travis's childhood was filled with hockey,
02:26:27.040 soccer, golf, and countless escapades.
02:26:32.140 On snow days, Trav would swing by
02:26:34.320 and pick up me and our other teammates
02:26:36.080 and we'd go to the rink for hockey.
02:26:39.020 In summer, Travis loved golfing
02:26:41.000 and he wouldn't tolerate just nine holes.
02:26:44.500 He'd keep us out in the hot sun
02:26:46.300 just to play those extra nine.
02:26:49.320 Good thing he wasn't competitive.
02:26:51.340 Travis had many very close friends, several of whom are here today, and others watching from afar.
02:26:59.940 What we have in common is that we were able to experience Travis's kindness,
02:27:04.700 contagious joy, and unparalleled positivity, even in the face of hardships.
02:27:11.720 It's the essence of bravery and perseverance he helped instill in us that gets us through these hard times now.
02:27:21.340 By all accounts, Travis's life began in Colebrook,
02:27:27.820 a boy on an ice rink growing up into a young man.
02:27:33.360 But to those who knew him, Travis's life began when he met the love of his life, Annie.
02:27:40.960 The two were smitten that Annie was such a sports fan certainly helped.
02:27:46.300 They married, built a life, and moved across the country together.
02:27:49.740 They had two beloved dogs, BJ and Teddy, a loving family, and many close friends.
02:27:57.340 The two loved to travel to the mountains, to Florida, or home to Nova Scotia.
02:28:02.780 Most importantly, these two loved to travel to connect with loved ones and close friends.
02:28:11.800 Judy, Hubert, Sheena, Kenzie, Kiara, Reese, Annie's parents, Shelley and Blair, Annie's brother Sam, and his bride-to-be, Allie, if she ever asks.
02:28:25.940 Annie was his first and only love and his soft place to fall when life got too big and too loud.
02:28:33.100 Golf may be a solo sport, but Trav and Annie were a team.
02:28:38.060 What a gift to have shared a love like this.
02:28:42.020 Travis had a strong moral compass and his values were sound.
02:28:45.920 He was the epitome of integrity.
02:28:49.300 Travis was dubbed the Snow Angel of Edmonton, and this is who Travis always was.
02:28:55.420 Even when no one was looking, even when no one was taking pictures or writing articles,
02:29:00.540 he did it because that's who he was.
02:29:03.620 He was the consummate diplomat, loving, kind, and compassionate,
02:29:08.140 and he wore these attributes like armor.
02:29:12.140 Instead of social media, he would pick up the phone and call, fostering real connections.
02:29:18.340 Relationships were paramount to Travis.
02:29:22.020 Travis's dream was always to be a police officer.
02:29:25.420 His hard work and determination helped his dream come to fruition nearly nine years ago.
02:29:32.060 Travis and Annie packed up their lives in Nova Scotia and moved to the big city of Edmonton,
02:29:36.940 where Travis was able to live out his childhood dream.
02:29:41.200 This is not a mantle that Travis carried lightly.
02:29:45.720 We strive to protect those we love from the unkindness of life in the dark clouds of humanity.
02:29:53.300 However, we cannot always keep our loved ones safe from all that their journeys hold.
02:30:00.220 We can only love them unconditionally, be a safe harbor for them as they encounter the challenges of life, and support them in their dreams.
02:30:11.960 Everyone should have a Travis in their lives.
02:30:15.580 To encourage you, to laugh with you, to love you, to celebrate with you during life's greatest moments, and to cry with you through its hardships.
02:30:28.060 These virtues were taught to Travis by Judy and Hubert as a child, and they nestled deep into the fabric of who he was.
02:30:37.920 Travis's love was a gift to us.
02:30:40.040 His generosity of spirit made his corners of the world a better place.
02:30:45.500 And we too can improve our own small corners of the world by following his tireless examples of goodness.
02:30:55.020 Travis and Brett are now the example of dedication and sacrifice.
02:30:59.820 I'm overwhelmed today looking out into the sea of blue.
02:31:04.420 each of you willing to courageously risk your own safety to ensure another's your work has never
02:31:13.180 been easy and on a day like today that rings more true than ever your bonds of brother and
02:31:21.240 sisterhood deserve our respect and our gratitude annie family friends and squad mates
02:31:29.620 you love travis so deeply and so well because he was so well loved he will be equally missed
02:31:37.280 we will continue to hold you up in our thoughts and prayers as you begin the inconceivable journey
02:31:43.520 of life without travis each day will be filled with past memories of all that was
02:31:49.820 and all that should have been his walk was short but his impact was endless
02:31:55.300 we appreciate that Travis walked this earth
02:31:59.020 as he touched so many hearts and so many lives
02:32:02.180 and this love will live on
02:32:04.520 we never know how and when we touch the lives of others
02:32:08.360 and here today Travis is touching so many
02:32:11.240 in days to come
02:32:13.700 when the soft dusk of night shadows the earth
02:32:17.520 you will be able to count his love in the stars
02:32:22.220 Travis will always remain right here in our hearts
02:32:26.820 we are grateful to have known him
02:32:28.860 God bless and tailwinds my dearest friend
02:32:32.340 thank you Brody
02:32:46.880 I would now welcome Sergeant Chris Gallagher
02:32:50.780 and Sergeant Perry Getzinger to come to the podium.
02:33:11.080 Annie and Judy, Hubert, Blair, Shelley, Nana,
02:33:17.280 Sheena and Blake, Sam and Allison, and Travis's niece and nephews, Reese, Mackenzie, and Kiara.
02:33:26.300 We are truly honoured today to be giving this tribute to Travis.
02:33:29.900 You all know him as Travis, but to his crew and to both of us, we knew him as TJ.
02:33:35.900 Both names will be used as we talk about our friend today.
02:33:40.260 My name is Sergeant Chris Gallagher, and this is Sergeant Perry Getzinger.
02:33:44.040 Perry was Travis and Brett's sergeant, and I've known Travis and Brett since her time in recruit training.
02:33:52.600 Today we gather to honour and pay tribute to a dear friend, colleague, respected member of the Edmonton Police Service.
02:34:00.840 I had the pleasure of training Travis in recruit training.
02:34:04.020 After spending two years in the Atlantic Police Academy, he didn't get off to a great start here.
02:34:08.940 if you can all refer to the photo in your program
02:34:12.940 or you can look at the photo at the front of the stage
02:34:15.680 he is without a name tag
02:34:17.540 and if it was really a full photo
02:34:25.660 you would see that he also was not wearing any boots
02:34:28.540 the day the photos were taken he forgot his boots
02:34:33.920 and name tag at home and it was only day three here
02:34:37.840 if you know Travis you know that forgetting things and not being prepared was out of character for
02:34:46.300 him the class did many push-ups that morning and needless to say he never forgot his name
02:34:52.180 tiger boots again Travis loved being a police officer and his passion for serving and protecting
02:34:59.620 his community was evident in everything that he did he was dependable loyal and his colleagues
02:35:06.240 knew that they could always count on him to have their backs. Travis was a well-respected
02:35:12.240 member of the service and his dedication to his job was unparalleled. Travis was a leader
02:35:17.980 right from the start. He was an excellent recruit training officer and was always willing
02:35:24.280 to mentor new recruits coming into the crew. Sergeant Getzinger called on him to go up
02:35:30.580 temporary acting, Travis always stepped up and he always did an excellent job.
02:35:35.560 He told me he always considered Sergeant Getchner as his work dad.
02:35:50.200 Travis was an exceptional man of talent with an OCD level of attention to detail
02:35:56.980 that made him great at his job.
02:36:00.580 He was hardworking and well-respected by his colleagues, and his contributions to this service will never be forgotten.
02:36:10.140 Travis started all of his shifts, ensuring his car was meticulously clean inside and out.
02:36:16.640 He often would take out the leftover paperwork, food, garbage that he found in the car,
02:36:21.920 and he would leave it in the appropriate member's mailbox for them to deal with.
02:36:25.600 travis took pride in our squad meals he loved to help plan but it had to be a certain way
02:36:36.500 his world his rules were as follows the food had to be ready on time his favorite potato chips
02:36:45.460 had to be on the table and the pop had to be cold or riley would never hear the end of it
02:36:55.600 Beyond his professionalism and work ethic, T.J. was also known for his great sense of
02:37:02.760 humor. He had a way of making people laugh and feel at ease, even in the most stressful
02:37:08.580 situations. T.J. could diffuse tension with a well-timed joke or a witty comment, and
02:37:15.420 his positive attitude was infectious. Travis was a leader, and I could always rely on him
02:37:22.800 to fill my shoes when I was away.
02:37:26.960 Well, on one shift while he was acting sergeant,
02:37:30.300 Travis proceeded to play a prank
02:37:31.780 on the most junior member of our crew.
02:37:34.740 The last day of the set,
02:37:36.280 he made sure everybody was on board,
02:37:38.320 and then he proceeded to tell Riley
02:37:39.680 that the squad had an eight-hour training day
02:37:41.560 about economic crimes at Northwest Campus.
02:37:47.460 The next morning,
02:37:49.160 Riley arrived bright and early at Northwest Campus,
02:37:51.240 looked around
02:37:53.040 this whole squad was at home in bed
02:37:56.340 this level of respect and trust
02:38:00.740 by his peers allowed him to be
02:38:02.840 pretty much the only one to get away with pranks
02:38:04.800 like this
02:38:05.440 Travis was very
02:38:08.380 proud
02:38:09.200 to call squad for
02:38:12.640 his family
02:38:14.180 sorry
02:38:15.360 to call squad for his family
02:38:19.080 and we are all going to miss him
02:38:20.960 dearly.
02:38:26.780 Let's talk about Travis the golfer.
02:38:31.680 Any of you
02:38:32.840 that knew Travis know he was
02:38:34.860 an excellent golfer.
02:38:37.000 Ultra competitive
02:38:37.840 and really liked to win.
02:38:42.180 Three years ago I arranged a golf trip
02:38:44.320 with my closest friends.
02:38:46.700 Bill Countryman, Chris
02:38:48.340 and TJ.
02:38:51.380 Travis was so excited to go on this trip that he named our group chat Birdies and Beers.
02:38:56.400 He was involved with making sure he could pick the courses that we wanted to play and the planning of the trip.
02:39:04.620 The first game that we played was at Silvertip in Canmore.
02:39:07.980 And for some reason, Chris was playing out of his shoes and beating Travis.
02:39:13.380 The more Travis tried to catch Chris, the more he was spraying the ball off the tee.
02:39:18.000 the three of us were never afraid to get in his kitchen
02:39:22.060 we tormented him for his ball going everywhere but the fairway
02:39:25.660 somehow the nickname sprinkles was born
02:39:29.280 and he embraced it as evidenced on his personalized sprinkles golf balls
02:39:34.960 that he had made for this upcoming season
02:39:36.780 the victory at silver tip was the one and only time that chris managed to beat travis at golf
02:39:45.180 No matter how hard I tried, I never managed to achieve that goal.
02:39:50.140 I'm going to miss you, buddy.
02:39:59.020 TJ was a man with a smile that could light up a room.
02:40:02.420 A man of great integrity.
02:40:04.260 He was always determined and motivated to be the best.
02:40:08.100 TJ's goal was always to become a member of the tactical unit.
02:40:11.960 One day while working out at West Division, he was running on the treadmill,
02:40:15.760 and he was approached by another member who was inquiring by, you know, why such the intense workout.
02:40:23.000 TJ informed him of his goal to get into tactical, and he was preparing for the runoff.
02:40:28.200 The member then offered his CrossFit workout, which consisted of 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 squats.
02:40:37.160 And then he told TJ that he could do it in under 18 minutes.
02:40:39.760 so after running on the treadmill for i don't know how long tj was on there for
02:40:44.840 he got off took the member's advice started the workout while the member watched
02:40:50.620 tj completed the workout in under nine minutes and in typical fashion he let that member know
02:40:57.940 this was no big deal man tj strived to be the best he could in everything that he attempted
02:41:04.980 and he never did give up.
02:41:08.600 Three nights ago, Annie saw the Northern Lights
02:41:12.120 for the first time.
02:41:15.320 Her and TJ had talked about watching the Northern Lights,
02:41:18.860 but it was something that they had never done together.
02:41:24.900 They were the brightest they've been in six years.
02:41:28.900 Annie, Travis will always be your Northern Light.
02:41:34.980 While we mourn TJ's passing, we must also celebrate his life and the impact that he had on those around him.
02:41:42.580 He was a shining example of what it means to be a police officer, a husband, a son, a grandson, a brother, friend, or Uncle T.
02:41:55.740 He was also a great dog dad.
02:41:59.820 We are all better for having known him.
02:42:01.860 So let us honour his legacy by committing ourselves to the values he held dear,
02:42:07.560 dedication, hard work, humour, love of family, and community.
02:42:17.880 Rest in peace, Travis. We love you, brother.
02:42:21.420 Your service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
02:42:31.860 Thank you, Sergeants.
02:42:43.060 Lastly, I would like to invite Chaplain Roy Langer to speak on behalf of Travis's wife, Annie.
02:43:01.860 Thank you.
02:43:31.860 Thank you.
02:44:01.840 moment on this day walking alongside a family and to stand here right now with with annie
02:44:12.800 as she shared in writing for me the words of love and respect that she has for her husband
02:44:22.880 and these are her words
02:44:26.320 travis
02:44:31.440 my police officer my best friend my husband my whole world
02:44:40.220 have i told you how much i love you lately or how much i appreciate everything you do for me
02:44:49.680 and our sweet little boys, Teddy and BJ.
02:44:54.040 What about how much I admire you
02:44:56.700 for everything that you do for everyone else?
02:45:00.100 You are the most generous, selfless,
02:45:03.540 and loving person I know.
02:45:07.260 It's been the biggest honor being your wife.
02:45:11.800 The second I put my eyes on you,
02:45:14.760 i wasn't sure your incredibly confident nature was palatable in the room
02:45:22.720 with time you showed me what undivided attention really meant
02:45:30.220 as well as the chemistry that can take place when two individuals with so much in common
02:45:39.240 connect in passion trust and true love
02:45:43.440 our life together was truly remarkable right from the beginning
02:45:50.060 it was just easy we didn't have one hard day in 11 years
02:45:57.920 the world was really ours we had already started leaving our mark in so many different places
02:46:06.220 we were well on the way to exploring many other countries and sharing new experiences together
02:46:15.500 we worked hard together to build our careers and to get you to fulfilling your dream of being a
02:46:25.200 police officer very very persevered we persevered together at every turn simply gaining
02:46:35.720 new insight along the way and setting our eyes back on the
02:46:40.020 horizon. I was so proud of you when
02:46:44.080 the news came that we would be moving to Edmonton
02:46:47.120 in search of fulfilling your dreams, our dream
02:46:52.080 of being a police officer.
02:46:55.980 Your brothers and sisters in blue meant the
02:47:00.080 world to you. Right from the beginning
02:47:03.240 you were lucky to have them and they were lucky to have you the excitement that you had
02:47:12.140 in your early days as a recruit was absolutely precious the stories that you came home with
02:47:20.340 and the anticipation of all the exercises ahead filled our household on a regular basis
02:47:29.160 Travis maintained that excitement throughout his entire tenure with EPS
02:47:41.800 and what came from through that was just unbelievable
02:47:47.640 for almost eight years squad four was family Travis was adamant about staying on that squad
02:47:56.540 as they were a very tight-knit group and an awesome sergeant.
02:48:04.700 He would do absolutely anything for you,
02:48:12.540 including sacrificing his life in the line of duty for those he loved.
02:48:17.760 I think most people who worked with Travis,
02:48:21.860 with him attested to the type of individual that he was.
02:48:25.840 excitement that he had to take every call any call whether it was a fraud or a crime flight
02:48:34.640 he showed up and ready to go he felt so supported by you all even though his strong attention to
02:48:44.280 detail could lose and could lead to some racked up charges in the fought in the squad fund but you
02:48:52.400 you were his family away from home and you meant the world to him and i can't ever thank you enough
02:49:00.520 for that travis that unwavering loyalty is one of the most incredible things about you
02:49:11.060 i could depend on you always you are my protector and not a day will pass without your impact
02:49:20.960 shining through everything that I do on our wedding day I vowed to stand beside you when
02:49:29.800 you honor the fallen and be and be understanding when duty comes to calling so today I am honoring
02:49:41.000 you as i did that day and will continue as long as i live until we are together again love annie
02:50:11.000 Thank you, Annie, for those touching and impactful words.
02:50:36.280 And Chaplain Langer, thank you for speaking them on behalf of her.
02:50:43.900 To present eulogies for Constable Ryan, I would now like to invite Brett's wife Ashley and brother Garrett to the podium.
02:51:06.280 Before I begin with Brett's eulogy, I would like to share something that my friend and
02:51:24.320 co-worker sent to me just a few days after Brett's passing.
02:51:27.760 grief you'll find it comes in waves when the ship is first wrecked you're drowning with the
02:51:37.780 wreckage all around you everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty of the ship that
02:51:44.460 is no more all you can do is float you find some piece of the wreckage and you hang on for a while
02:51:53.320 Maybe it's a physical thing.
02:51:55.280 Maybe it's a happy memory or a photograph.
02:51:58.260 For a while, all you can do is float, stay alive.
02:52:09.280 In the beginning, the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you without mercy.
02:52:14.940 They come five seconds apart and don't allow you to catch your breath.
02:52:18.780 All you can do is hang on and float.
02:52:20.880 after a while maybe weeks maybe months you'll find the waves are still 100 feet tall
02:52:28.620 but they come further apart they still crash over you and wipe you out but in between you can breathe
02:52:36.400 you can function you never know what's going to trigger the grief it might be a song a picture
02:52:44.100 a street intersection the smell of a cup of coffee and the wave comes crashing
02:52:50.240 But in between the waves, there is life.
02:52:56.200 Somewhere down the line, and it's different for everyone,
02:52:59.820 you find the waves are only 80 feet tall or 50 feet tall.
02:53:04.420 And while they still come, they are further apart.
02:53:07.720 You can see them coming, an anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas.
02:53:12.560 You can see it coming and prepare yourself.
02:53:14.580 When it washes over you, you know that somehow you will come out the other side.
02:53:21.720 Soaking wet, sputtering, still hanging on to some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you will come out.
02:53:31.280 The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don't really want them to, but you learn that you will survive them.
02:53:38.560 If you're lucky, you'll have a lot of scars from lots of shipwrecks and lots of flood.
02:53:44.580 Brett was an extraordinary police officer, friend, brother, uncle, son, doting husband,
02:54:05.100 and proud soon-to-be father. He loved fishing, hunting, watching the Toronto Blue Jays sometimes
02:54:12.440 win, and when they didn't, he changed the channel to the Astros game. He loved traveling and trying
02:54:20.220 new things. He was definitely the extrovert in our relationship, making new friends wherever
02:54:26.040 our travels took us. He loved our dogs. His unspoken favorite, of course, was his Mavi girl.
02:54:36.160 His reason? She's the good one that didn't chew up our new couch, unlike our new puppy Scout. 1.00
02:54:42.440 Brett did not want his eulogy to be sad.
02:54:51.340 He wanted it to be full of laughable memories and only wanted one tear shed.
02:54:56.340 Although that one tear rule will be undoubtedly broken.
02:55:02.380 Brett wore many hats throughout his short adult life,
02:55:05.400 which included paramedic, referee, skydiver, firefighter.
02:55:11.500 We won't even get into that adventure.
02:55:14.820 And finally, his dream came true when he became a member of the Edmonton Police Service.
02:55:22.140 Brett had a generous soul and an inviting personality that captured everyone's attention and heart,
02:55:28.760 making them feel like family.
02:55:31.480 He had a crooked little grin, which usually meant he was up to no good,
02:55:36.160 but you couldn't help but smile along with him.
02:55:41.500 These past 10 days have been the worst days of our lives.
02:55:45.580 Nothing can bring him back.
02:55:47.820 No what-ifs can change what transpired that night,
02:55:50.660 no matter how many times I wish that night went differently.
02:55:55.300 It is both a blessing and a curse,
02:55:57.560 having been present at the time of his worst moment.
02:56:03.000 Unfortunately, I will never forget that night for as long as I live.
02:56:06.480 But the memories I will always happily remember are the ones of Brett waking up in the morning,
02:56:15.320 making his coffee, reading the news in his fuzzy slippers because he was such an old man at heart.
02:56:23.480 I will remember how thrilled he was when EPS allowed the growth of facial hair.
02:56:28.740 Brett was so pumped to try to grow out his beard, and boy, just because you can doesn't mean you should.
02:56:36.480 I will remember his snuggles and how his beard scratched my face when he kissed my cheek.
02:56:47.080 I will remember his karaoke song choices at work Christmas parties, or any party for that matter.
02:56:54.000 I will remember driving anywhere with him and telling him how terrible of a driver he was,
02:56:59.780 with his reply being, Ash, I drive distracted for a living. I think I can get you to where you need to go.
02:57:06.480 I will always remember how we first met, being on the same call together,
02:57:14.980 him slipping on ice in front of me, literally falling head over heels.
02:57:19.660 It was instant for us both.
02:57:22.360 I will remember his smell, his wheezy laugh.
02:57:25.740 We've been told we laugh the exact same way.
02:57:29.760 I will always remember how excited he was when Brett found out he was going to be a dad.
02:57:34.640 and I know that is one memory I will never lose.
02:57:46.320 My sweet husband,
02:57:48.200 we thought we had eternity ahead of us.
02:57:51.700 The ten years we had together will have to suffice,
02:57:54.680 but the everlasting love I have for you and for us is evermore.
02:58:01.040 I know you have already met our baby
02:58:03.120 and you will forever be their angel.
02:58:05.800 You will live on in baby Ryan
02:58:07.440 and they will know every last detail
02:58:10.080 about how special you were to so many people
02:58:12.800 and most importantly to me.
02:58:18.740 I love you forever.
02:58:20.300 I'll miss you always.
02:58:21.600 And I love you more.
02:58:23.400 Until we meet again.
02:58:33.120 Thank you.
02:59:03.120 afternoon everyone. My name is Gary Ryan and I'm Constable Brett Ryan's oldest brother.
02:59:11.380 On behalf of my family, we'd like to thank everyone. All EMS services, Edmonton police
02:59:18.240 officers, Edmonton firefighters, peace officers, correctional officers, SWAT members, EMRs,
02:59:24.740 EMTs, paramedics, RCMP, and also our sheriffs. If I've missed anyone, please accept my dearest
02:59:36.420 apologies. Before I begin, I just want to express our gratitude for the warm wishes,
02:59:51.660 deepest condolences and prayers that we've received directly through instant messaging
02:59:56.400 and across all social media platforms. The support that we've seen locally
03:00:01.920 across the city of Edmonton, this very province, and this amazing country has been absolutely
03:00:09.020 overwhelming. We've seen it, we've heard it, we've certainly felt it, and it's meant the entire
03:00:19.000 world to us, and we cannot thank you all enough.
03:00:26.780 I never thought this day would come.
03:00:30.300 Not in a million years.
03:00:33.300 How can you process something that makes so little sense?
03:00:38.620 I wanted to speak today, but I wasn't quite sure how I'd do it.
03:00:43.100 How do you summarize your brother's life in only a few short minutes?
03:00:46.660 So I decided to think about love, and I'd be glad I did it.
03:00:51.800 The harsh reality of this life is if you're lucky enough to know love,
03:00:56.160 you'll inevitably know loss as well.
03:00:59.220 It's a non-negotiable part of the equation.
03:01:01.620 Those two things are the great connectors of us all,
03:01:03.740 and we understand the emotions of both.
03:01:08.200 Brett Ryan was welcomed into this world as the youngest of three boys
03:01:11.860 when he was born on June 3, 1992, at 12.11 p.m. to his loving parents, Bob and Laurie Ryan,
03:01:20.100 and two older brothers, myself and Kirk.
03:01:23.200 He began kindergarten at Fox Creek School in 1997.
03:01:27.760 With Mom being an emergency room nurse, to say that he was introduced to emergency services
03:01:33.840 at such a young age is an understatement.
03:01:37.720 When she drove the ambulance for the annual Canada Day Parade,
03:01:43.260 Brett was the little guy that was throwing candy to everyone outside the passenger window,
03:01:48.060 and he thought this was the coolest thing.
03:01:51.120 A few years later, if you notice, a little boy dressed up head to toe in bandages,
03:01:55.800 covered head to toe in fake blood.
03:01:57.760 That wasn't anybody injured walking behind the float.
03:02:00.740 That was just my brother.
03:02:01.860 when his illustrious hockey career of dumping the puck in the corner icing the puck off the glass
03:02:11.620 and scoring only two goals between novice and midget had had concluded
03:02:16.160 brett took up hockey officiating while i joked with him that i taught him everything that there
03:02:25.880 was to know about hockey officiating it turns out brett met one of his first true loves
03:02:32.240 When my family moved to Spruce Grove in 2005,
03:02:35.600 Brett continued to climb the officiating ranks with Hockey Alberta
03:02:38.160 and became the pillar in the community.
03:02:41.200 His career as a referee spent nearly 20 years,
03:02:45.400 seeing him officiate at some of the highest levels
03:02:48.600 and most recognized tournaments in the province.
03:02:52.020 He also willingly lent his expertise to the younger officials
03:02:55.340 whenever called upon.
03:02:58.380 I have no doubt that because of Brett's influence,
03:03:01.280 Spruce Grove is in Alberta, a hockey hotbed for up-and-coming officials.
03:03:07.580 Brett attended St. Marguerite Catholic School for junior high and graduated from high school from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School in 2010.
03:03:17.700 It wasn't long after that that Brett wanted to pursue a career in emergency services.
03:03:24.220 He earned his emergency medical responder certification from NAIT that same year
03:03:29.300 before earning his emergency medical technician certification from Emergency Services Academy in Sherwood Park the following year.
03:03:38.740 Brett excelled in his 1001 fire training and graduated from the Canadian Training Division in Fort Worth, Texas in 2014
03:03:45.140 before coming back home to resume his career as an EMT.
03:03:53.220 working in his career saddle lake his life was changed when he met a beautiful girl named ashley
03:04:03.660 when their respective crews were called out to the same scene
03:04:07.040 he then married her in 2015 at an amazing yet smoky outdoor wedding in kilona bc
03:04:14.040 while brett loved his career he then began to shift his eyes and his heart
03:04:19.980 ultimately toward a career with the Edmonton Police Services.
03:04:25.700 My mom always used to say that hard work, dedication, and perseverance will get you anywhere.
03:04:31.700 Brett pulled that advice into him and made it his own.
03:04:36.140 He graduated from Edmonton Police Services with flying colors with his diploma on July 27, 2018.
03:04:43.800 He did all of this before he was 25 years old.
03:04:48.220 he was then stationed at edmonton's west division for five and a half years
03:04:53.880 needless to say he found his home
03:04:56.540 as brett began to grow into his own we were also becoming the best of friends
03:05:02.920 and he taught both of he taught both of his older brothers kirk and myself
03:05:08.400 a number of lessons that he expressed either verbally or silently some of these lessons
03:05:15.160 might not resonate now but we hope at the very least some of them will give us the time and
03:05:20.560 opportunity to pause and reflect. Don't take life too seriously. Okay so I got to tell a little funny
03:05:29.240 story about Brett here. Brett wasn't exactly the most studious of students in high school and that's
03:05:37.540 okay not everybody is. He was going into his chemistry 30 diploma exam with about 60 percent
03:05:43.300 standing and he realized maybe he didn't put enough hard work into studying for the exam that
03:05:49.980 he should have he buckled down or so we thought he scored an 80 percent a couple years later we
03:06:01.140 asked him how exactly did you do it was it too easy and he said i sat beside the valedictorian
03:06:08.420 and I cheated on his test.
03:06:17.380 But he admitted to his shortcomings
03:06:19.180 with full disclosure.
03:06:21.900 That was Brett.
03:06:23.520 At least he was consistent.
03:06:27.380 The power of laughter is contagious.
03:06:31.260 As what was mentioned just a few minutes ago,
03:06:35.340 Brett had a unique smile to him.
03:06:36.940 a unique smirk
03:06:39.320 one of I just stole your wallet
03:06:41.720 and you don't know about it
03:06:42.940 Brett had the most
03:06:45.400 wheezy contagious laugh
03:06:47.440 I have ever heard in my life
03:06:49.420 he could be across the room
03:06:51.560 laughing at something
03:06:52.420 I don't even know what he's laughing at
03:06:54.620 and all of a sudden I start laughing
03:06:56.220 his laughter was the loudest
03:06:59.820 when he mounted
03:07:01.640 the most epic comebacks against me
03:07:03.460 in Super Mario Kart and Halo
03:07:04.920 So, I'll finally announce today that Brett was the better player all along.
03:07:12.960 Practice confidence under pressure.
03:07:18.380 Brett and I had a quiet conversation to ourselves a few years ago.
03:07:24.620 And I just asked him if the nature of policing ever scared him.
03:07:28.920 He looked at me, shook his head, and he said no.
03:07:31.900 So Brett was confident in himself, his abilities, and his training.
03:07:39.120 Brett took his personal safety to heart, and he was without a doubt one of,
03:07:43.940 if not one of the most safety-oriented officers you'll ever meet.
03:07:50.000 Broaden your world and have fun.
03:07:53.160 Brett lived by the mantra of work hard, play hard,
03:07:56.040 and he applied the same passion and loyalty from his career to his friends.
03:07:59.800 He loved fishing, camping, skydiving.
03:08:05.440 I would never skydive, for that matter.
03:08:08.820 Hunting, softball, Wendy's Baconators, Donairs, Timmy's Coffee, Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays, and playing with his two dogs, Mavie and Scout.
03:08:23.100 He loved his vacation time, and his two favorite vacation times were Las Vegas and Mexico.
03:08:29.800 Now, he also loved country music. Brett and I did a lot of bonding in my car when he was sitting in my passenger seat. If we weren't singing to Nickelback, we were singing to a lot of country music.
03:08:43.500 So we apologize to any drivers around Spruce Grove who looked at us kind of weird when we were singing Come Over by Kenny Chesney with the windows down. It was just us Ryan boys having fun.
03:08:56.080 there are lots of ways to get you to where you want to go brett was a shining example of the
03:09:05.260 six w philosophy work will win when wishing won't his legacy is that he's a small town boy
03:09:13.860 from fox creek in spruce grove alberta who followed his dreams and made the entire world notice
03:09:21.540 love your brothers unconditionally
03:09:32.140 the relationship between siblings teaches you to love above all else and to appreciate those
03:09:39.800 who don't tell you what you want to hear who pester you who make you angry who steal your
03:09:45.780 things and who wants what you want siblings will always be friends and family no matter what
03:09:52.580 and they'll always be a phone call or text away
03:09:55.540 our hearts are our hearts and lives were shattered when constables brett ryan and
03:10:04.620 travis jordan pay the ultimate sacrifice at approximately 12 40 12 47 a.m on thursday
03:10:10.780 March 26, 2023, and our lives will never be the same.
03:10:17.380 I often called Brett my big little brother
03:10:19.780 because that's how much I looked up to him.
03:10:25.580 I love my little brother so much,
03:10:27.760 his accomplishments and the man he became.
03:10:32.320 I wish I only had five more minutes to spend with him.
03:10:36.640 Tell him one more time how much I love him.
03:10:38.520 he is our hero
03:10:40.960 he is Kirk's
03:10:43.440 and my little brother
03:10:44.800 Brett you've enriched
03:10:47.680 our lives
03:10:48.520 and so many other people
03:10:51.420 around you
03:10:52.020 for 30 years
03:10:54.300 coming up 31 years
03:10:55.920 your last breath
03:10:59.760 on earth became your first breath in heaven
03:11:01.400 our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
03:11:05.220 has made a house for you
03:11:06.200 may God wrap his arms around you
03:11:09.180 as you dwell with him
03:11:10.000 go knowing that your work is complete
03:11:14.920 and you've made this world a better place
03:11:17.580 until we meet again Brett
03:11:19.900 I love you so much
03:11:21.160 thank you Ashley and Garrett
03:11:34.280 for those moving tributes
03:11:35.720 And I want to thank both families for sharing your memories with us about Travis and Brett.

03:11:45.240 This whole arena is your family, and we stand behind you.

03:12:50.660 police service family active and retired today we gather to mourn to honor as you've heard many
03:13:00.180 times, two incredible young men. The Edmonton Police Service grieves the loss of these two
03:13:06.500 brave and talented members of our family, and we stand with their wives, their mothers,
03:13:13.720 their fathers, their grandparents, their siblings, their entire community of family and friends
03:13:20.300 to mourn the tragedy together. We gather with the pain of Brett and Travis's deaths,
03:13:27.120 overwhelming us knowing that seasons of sadness will follow us as we try to learn to live without
03:13:33.320 them we will never stop feeling their loss but we will seek and find comfort in their memory
03:13:40.800 and the pride of their legacy brett and travis were two exceptional young men with full and happy
03:13:49.480 lives as you've heard brett was a first responder to the bone he lived a life serving and supporting
03:13:56.380 his community as you heard he was a paramedic before joining eps served as a competitive
03:14:02.860 referee a volunteer a community leader a mentor to many a man of calm gentle integrity and
03:14:12.380 compassion he was unyielding in his service to eps and to the community
03:14:19.420 travis was someone who took initiative showed perseverance was outgoing trustworthy dependable
03:14:30.140 he was a remarkable human who allowed his humanity to shine bringing a caring nature
03:14:36.380 attention to detail sense of humor and an outstanding outstanding loyalty to those in
03:14:42.620 his life in Edmonton and his beloved Nova Scotia. They both honoured their uniform, each with records
03:14:51.220 full of examples of exemplary service. As they encountered people in moments of frustration,
03:14:59.060 anger, fear of tragedy, they offered outstanding understanding and compassionate. They showed up
03:15:06.520 for us all every single day from everything i know of these individuals they were also perfect
03:15:15.940 partners described as persevering resilient and committed to community travis and brett
03:15:25.640 ventured dutifully into a dark and dangerous moment answering a call when someone in a moment
03:15:30.840 of profound vulnerability and they made the ultimate sacrifice their lives to protect their
03:15:39.980 community this truth changes things in grief we all ask what can we do
03:15:47.600 first we need to lean into this moment grief is not a thing we can hide from or run from
03:15:55.180 we know this from our lives and from the moment we first were alerted to this unspeakable tragedy
03:16:01.960 we cannot shy away from the magnitude of what has happened or its impact
03:16:07.120 as chief i have seen it in every face i've encountered since that early morning call
03:16:14.320 and now i see it on all of us as police as first responders we lead lives of service and we know
03:16:25.160 even in our trauma that our commitment to service means seeking to prevent and remove pain
03:16:31.040 and suffering from others. Managing the commitment, this commitment and the terrible consequences
03:16:37.220 that can result is one of the most difficult parts of our service.
03:16:45.980 We've had to mark this moment for eight officers in the last six months in our nation.
03:16:52.580 the entire national and international policing community
03:16:56.780 present here today is very mindful of this
03:17:00.240 and the increased risks that we now carry
03:17:03.560 in moments like this we need to attend not just to the moment
03:17:09.200 but what it means and how we all must ensure
03:17:12.900 we don't continue to gather this way
03:17:14.960 all of us who lead must take up this challenge together
03:17:20.320 our police service is grieving but even in our grief we show up all of us every day
03:17:31.500 i am so proud of every member of our service their commitment to lean in lean on and look
03:17:40.460 after each other in this time of need even when their own tanks are close to empty
03:17:46.640 it's an incredible display of courage
03:17:50.500 of perseverance, resilience
03:17:53.040 equal to the men we honour today
03:17:55.380 we have not faltered
03:17:57.560 not for a moment
03:17:59.080 since we heard the news
03:18:00.840 that we never ever want to hear
03:18:03.920 in turn
03:18:06.560 we are grateful for how our community
03:18:09.160 has shown up for us
03:18:10.980 whether at a school that literally
03:18:13.120 wrapped itself in blue
03:18:14.400 or the countless children and teachers who have worn blue, sent cards, and placed flowers.
03:18:21.700 Our community has delivered food, laid more flowers, lined procession routes,
03:18:26.940 tied ribbons on posts on trees, and turned porch lights on.
03:18:32.180 Building lights and bridges in blue, thousands of emails, thousands of texts offering support
03:18:38.000 have been sent from our local community and around the world.
03:18:42.300 our community has
03:18:43.960 bared witness to these moments
03:18:46.000 and stood with us
03:18:47.740 in our time of grief
03:18:49.040 it has been noticed and felt
03:18:51.760 by us all
03:18:52.600 thank you
03:18:54.080 as we show up we have to lean
03:18:57.900 on each other
03:18:58.740 our fellow officers and members
03:19:01.620 our first responder community
03:19:03.620 our families and friends
03:19:05.780 we see such
03:19:07.820 a poignant example of those
03:19:09.940 here for Brett and Travis
03:19:11.860 his family we all hold our families a little tighter now we are actively supported by so
03:19:20.040 many first responders across so many agencies near and far who have marched with us today
03:19:25.880 you showed up for us right from the first moment you did this without question without hesitation
03:19:33.800 to pay respects to both Travis and Brett and their families.
03:19:40.460 To the Calgary Police Service, the RCMP, the sheriffs, our fire department,
03:19:45.160 and many others who have helped lighten our load today
03:19:48.260 so we can have so many officers present to pay our respects.
03:19:52.920 We have been directly aided by our foundation.
03:19:55.880 Those who have donated to both families, our city, our province,
03:19:59.800 and people across our nation are here to offer the support.
03:20:03.800 from when they first heard the news thank you to all
03:20:07.580 when someone is loved is lost it can feel cruel that the world doesn't stop when they stop
03:20:16.180 it goes on and so we must go on and look after each other in the weeks and months and years ahead
03:20:26.900 first to the jordan and ryan's families thank you for allowing us to share this moment with you
03:20:35.540 there is no way we can do enough to honor the sacrifice they made that you all now endure
03:20:45.280 you are part of our family we will be there for you in every way we can today tomorrow and always
03:20:56.900 And to the incredible people of the Edmonton Police Service,
03:21:02.600 to each and every one of you, we must support each other
03:21:05.800 and help each other find strength when we struggle, and we will struggle.
03:21:12.020 But we will honour Brett and Travis by always remembering them
03:21:16.780 for what they are and what they mean to us.
03:21:20.920 We will strive to be deserving of what they gave.
03:21:23.740 we need to focus on who they were
03:21:26.680 and what this now means for us of all
03:21:29.160 we should not wait for the funerals
03:21:32.300 of the fallen before we lift them up
03:21:35.220 celebrate them and show them our respect
03:21:39.200 we need to do this more readily
03:21:42.220 and more meaningful as a community
03:21:45.280 more often
03:21:46.460 this is how we carry on
03:21:49.060 we carry Travis and Brett
03:21:53.400 and we never let them go constable travis jordan constable brett ryan
03:22:02.680 thank you for all that you've done for us and for our community you will not be forgotten rest in
03:22:12.480 Peace.
03:22:19.220 Thank you, Chief McPhee.
03:22:23.020 In our rich tradition of piping for our fallen heroes,
03:22:27.440 Pipe Major Dale MacDonald will now lead the playing of amazing grace.
03:22:42.480 Thank you.
03:23:12.480 Thank you.
03:23:42.480 Thank you.
03:24:12.480 Thank you.
03:24:42.480 Thank you.
03:25:12.480 EPS chaplain Roy Langer will now come forward to deliver a message of support.
03:25:42.480 this has been such an honor
03:26:02.820 coming to know families
03:26:07.100 that
03:26:07.820 10 days ago I've never heard of
03:26:11.500 to walking in, knocking, from being told,
03:26:18.920 Roy, you're now a part of the family.
03:26:22.420 Just knock and walk in.
03:26:25.740 And it's been such an honor.
03:26:30.940 My heart is just so full of these families.
03:26:37.580 you know when we stopped to think it was just an ordinary night on march the 16th
03:26:46.700 as a matter of fact most of us have been at that time sleeping in our beds we were comfortable
03:26:55.700 we were warm we were safe edmonton police doing their job patrolling and protecting
03:27:05.420 is why we felt so comfortable in our own beds.
03:27:11.720 The squad car came up a quiet street with two officers.
03:27:19.560 Constable Travis Jordan, 35 years of age
03:27:25.140 and eight and a half years of service.
03:27:28.040 Constable Brett Ryan, 30 years of age,
03:27:32.420 five and a half years of service.
03:27:37.400 You see,
03:27:39.320 Brett and Travis,
03:27:43.320 they never thought twice
03:27:46.980 about that night
03:27:48.700 as they prepared to go on duty.
03:27:52.720 They put on their gear,
03:27:56.500 their vests,
03:27:59.440 and were ready to serve.
03:28:02.420 Because they loved their city.
03:28:07.020 They loved EPS.
03:28:09.560 They loved their families.
03:28:13.580 You know, our guys are married to two absolutely beautiful ladies. 1.00
03:28:22.340 Travis to Annie and Brett to Ashley.
03:28:27.220 Brett and Ashley expecting their first child.
03:28:30.320 and along with those two beautiful couples comes a beautiful family
03:28:37.380 and what i found over the past 10 days or so is that i would go and try to encourage
03:28:46.140 these families and i would walk away being the one encouraged
03:28:51.460 my life has been so full
03:28:56.200 because I've come in contact with you folks
03:29:00.140 I can't imagine how many lives
03:29:03.020 that you've been able to touch with your husbands
03:29:06.820 over the years
03:29:09.100 that night will always be a part of us
03:29:16.640 no matter what we do
03:29:19.980 we will not be able to take it away from our minds
03:29:24.320 when I received the call
03:29:27.820 I went directly
03:29:34.040 to the hospital and
03:29:36.140 there I met
03:29:39.680 your husbands
03:29:43.380 and I met you
03:29:46.900 moms and dads and nanny
03:29:51.640 and grandpa's brothers and sisters
03:29:55.420 tragedy upon tragedy
03:29:59.180 two families desperately shattered
03:30:02.860 a community in disbelief
03:30:06.100 police colleagues just stunned
03:30:09.820 and so
03:30:12.900 we gather here today
03:30:15.540 And I want to say to you that there's a phrase or verse that comes to my mind.
03:30:24.200 It says that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble.
03:30:33.020 So we rely on him today.
03:30:35.180 you know psalm 23 uh says says the it's uh yea though i walk through the valley of the shadow
03:30:45.300 of death and a little while ago a police officer friend of mine said to me we're
03:30:53.100 looking at that portion of that reading and he said to me he said roy in order for there
03:31:00.840 to be a shadow there had to be a light
03:31:03.300 and even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of
03:31:08.800 death thousands of people
03:31:11.960 are lifting you up not just for
03:31:16.900 a season but as you commence
03:31:20.620 your journey
03:31:21.660 we grieve because we love
03:31:26.680 and the more that we love
03:31:30.760 the more that we grieve
03:31:32.480 and I would say to you that
03:31:35.940 grief without hope
03:31:39.260 is soul
03:31:42.800 soul destroying
03:31:44.380 I want to use the metaphor of
03:31:48.420 ice
03:31:49.380 Nova Scotians and Albertans were very aware of ice
03:31:54.980 And when we think about hope, grief without hope, I would say that it's just like walking on very thin ice.
03:32:08.880 You can fall through at any moment.
03:32:11.640 but when that ice thickens when that when that hope becomes real when you hold on to that hope
03:32:20.960 with all of your strength that that ice becomes solid
03:32:26.020 and so it's in those moments and that solid firm ice or on the solid rock
03:32:38.220 that you will hold on to.
03:32:41.900 Yes, the waves will come.
03:32:45.220 Yes, the waves will knock you down,
03:32:48.080 as Ashley shared a moment ago.
03:32:52.400 But you will get up again.
03:32:56.040 We will get up again.
03:32:59.260 And so we are so thankful for our protectors.
03:33:06.260 and so today there's a song that that's gone through my mind so often and it does so often
03:33:14.780 and uh jim reeves wrote many years ago it's i'm not the vintage that i could remember
03:33:22.240 precious memories how they linger how they ever flood my soul want you to hold on this world can
03:33:32.780 take a lot of things away from us but i want to encourage you family friends
03:33:40.900 officers whoever is here this evening hold on the world can take so much away but
03:33:50.180 the deep soul love can't take it away because when we love deeply it goes deep into our soul
03:34:00.760 And so I believe with all my heart that Brett and Travis will continue to be with us.
03:34:16.840 You will see them in so many different ways.
03:34:22.040 and in the quiet moments
03:34:26.500 you feel that ping within your heart
03:34:31.320 in that laughter
03:34:33.840 where all of a sudden out of the blue
03:34:37.520 comes something so funny
03:34:40.120 precious memories
03:34:43.160 hold on to them
03:34:45.860 keep them close to you
03:34:48.020 brothers and sisters in blue
03:34:52.860 we've lost two of our brothers
03:34:57.040 and we thank you for showing up
03:35:01.260 in such huge numbers today
03:35:04.360 it's a testament
03:35:07.120 of what you're all about
03:35:10.440 down but not out
03:35:16.160 and so
03:35:19.180 Helen Keller said these words
03:35:22.760 what we once enjoyed
03:35:26.040 and deeply loved we can never lose
03:35:29.420 for all that we love deeply
03:35:33.560 becomes a part of us
03:35:35.500 and so that's why we are truly here today
03:35:40.660 celebrating the life of Travis and Brett
03:35:44.500 they will always be a part of us
03:35:48.060 gone from our presence
03:35:50.120 physically
03:35:52.080 but always alive
03:35:55.420 within our hearts
03:35:57.000 thank you
03:35:58.500 thank you Chaplain Langler
03:36:04.660 I would now ask everybody to please stand
03:36:07.540 before the chaplain delivers the benediction
03:36:11.880 the Corps Sergeant Major
03:36:13.840 will address the parade.
03:36:15.940 Parade! Attention!
