Western Standard - Poll finds BC Conservatives leading NDP by 2%

In this episode, we speak with the newly elected United Conservative Party of British Columbia Leader, Jason Kenney. He talks about his plans for the United Party and what he wants to see change in British Columbia. We also discuss the controversial issue of trans women in sports, and the controversial 14-year-old girl who has been performing in explicit situations on stage.

00:00:00.000 A challenge in British Columbia. British Columbia has always sort of been a two-party system.

00:00:04.040 We've always had, you know, whether it was the social credit in the NDP, whether it was the

00:00:08.680 B.C. Liberals in the NDP. However, what we've seen is the B.C. Liberals, now we call themselves

00:00:15.460 the United Party, has really lost the confidence of the people in the province. So they're looking

00:00:20.140 for change. And that's what we're trying to do with the Conservative Party of British Columbia

00:00:23.940 is to be a big tent party. And like I always like to say, it's not about being Conservative

00:00:28.220 or Liberal or NDP or Green, for that matter. It's just outstanding for what's right and

00:00:33.040 doing what's right for the people and fighting for the average everyday person. And so we're

00:00:36.580 drawing people from across the spectrum. There still is a risk, of course, with the United

00:00:40.540 Party. There's still a support base for the United Party, but we are leading now in the

00:00:43.820 polls. And our hope is that we can continue to consolidate the people in this province

00:00:49.520 that are looking for change, that are looking for common sense, to be able to bring them

00:00:52.900 together and provide that good government for British Columbia.

00:00:55.280 And it's been refreshing to hear a voice for common sense coming out in the legislature

00:00:59.800 there that needed that voice for a long time. You'd proposed a private members bill. You

00:01:04.460 don't get many opportunities when you're in a small minority, so you have to choose carefully.

00:01:08.000 But one that made sense to most people when it kept talking about government funded sports

00:01:12.620 and just making sure that it remains fair for everybody to participate. Alberta actually

00:01:16.620 has now brought in a similar policy. A lot of European countries have. But unfortunately,

00:01:22.060 it got shot down before first reading in the legislature.

00:01:25.580 Yeah, there was a, you know, it was a simple little bill, but it was a first in Canada to

00:01:30.420 be introduced in the legislature, which was a bill to bring fairness for women and girls

00:01:35.160 in sports. And basically what the bill does is to say that biological men should not be

00:01:40.580 competing with women and girls in sports. And it makes sense. I mean, it's, there's obviously

00:01:44.620 physiological differences between male and female, but more than that, you know, women have struggled 0.66

00:01:50.460 to be identified as a person. They struggled to be identified, to have the right to vote. They

00:01:55.080 struggled to be able to enter into places. They've struggled for equal pay. And now they have to

00:01:59.700 struggle for fairness in sports. It's crazy. That's why this bill was brought in just to say

00:02:04.800 enough of this nonsense is bringing back to common sense. And quite frankly, we also need to make sure

00:02:09.420 that we have safe space spaces for women to be able to go, you know, change rooms, washrooms, 1.00

00:02:14.160 these types of things as well. It's an approach that we think is just the right thing to do in

00:02:18.240 British Columbia, which is why we introduced that bill.

00:02:21.160 Well, that's it. And people have gone so far beyond common sense on this. I mean,

00:02:25.320 there's trans individuals, nobody wants to attack them or harm them, but we just have to

00:02:29.940 ensure that, you know, the activists have really overstepped reality in a lot of things when it came to

00:02:34.580 sport, when it came to women's safety in washrooms, or even cases of women's shelters. And we've had some

00:02:39.260 dangerous biological men put in with women who've been assaulted by other men in the past. It was a

00:02:44.580 terrible notion. Nobody was speaking up for them. So another issue that you've been speaking with our

00:02:51.300 own Linda Slobodian on, it's been a bizarre one going on out in BC with a 14 year old girl who's 0.88

00:02:57.140 been performing apparently in some pretty explicit circumstances on stages in BC. They say she's trans,

00:03:04.420 but she's also autistic and has some other challenges. And I mean, this is just beyond the

00:03:10.440 pale. You had stated that you were going to look into things and see if this is, you know,

00:03:16.120 there should be something the authorities can step in on. Have you had any progress with this?

00:03:21.160 So I have looked into this. I haven't had a chance to talk to the minister directly about it.

00:03:25.600 The issue really is that if you're under 16, you're not allowed to work in BC. This is,

00:03:31.300 I think, the labor laws that are in place unless there's special circumstances associated with

00:03:35.380 farming. And so there's those laws in place. But there's also where you have an adult

00:03:40.260 entertainment. You know, you have to be of age to be able to perform there as well.

00:03:46.060 And so there's something going on here. And I don't know why police haven't looked into it. I don't

00:03:49.960 know why, you know, the ministry hasn't looked into this either. It's one of those things that,

00:03:55.220 you know, you kind of go like, how did this happen?
