00:00:00.000 Thank you for joining us today.
00:00:04.600 My name is Jackie Lovely and I'm the MLA for the
00:00:07.780 Camrose constituency and today's MC.
00:00:09.880 I'm very excited to be part of the latest
00:00:12.380 broadband announcement as it will connect not
00:00:14.840 only communities here in cooking lake but also
00:00:17.760 Strathcona and Beaver counties as well as
00:00:20.620 residents in my constituency of Camrose.
00:00:23.260 Connectivity is at the heart of Alberta's
00:00:25.720 broadband strategy.
00:00:27.300 It's commitment from our government to ensure
00:00:30.000 all Albertans, regardless of when they live in our province, can connect to the internet and
00:00:34.940 eliminate the digital divide. Because access to the internet is not a luxury, it's a way of life.
00:00:42.740 And whether you're in Calgary or Tollfield, Alberta's government is taking action to ensure you can pay bills,
00:00:48.720 take a course, search for a job, and connect with loved ones. I'd like to thank Nate Glubish,
00:00:54.840 Minister of Technology and Innovation, Glenn Lawrence, Deputy Mayor of Strathcona County,
00:01:01.240 Darren Hawkinson, the Chief Executive Officer for SWITCH, and guests joining us today.
00:01:07.100 I'm eager to hear more about the details for this project and its benefits,
00:01:11.340 and invite Minister Glubish to the podium to provide more information.
00:01:18.760 Thank you, Jackie. Thanks for being here.
00:01:21.440 right here in my own backyard of South Cooking Lake, part of Strathcona County. It's so good to
00:01:25.920 be here as the local MLA for this region to be able to make an announcement about some really
00:01:31.920 exciting investments in connectivity. As Emily Lovely said, we know as a government that
00:01:40.320 connectivity is so important. We know that it is important to make sure that we get
00:01:45.760 every single household in this province connected to reliable high-speed internet
00:01:50.480 so that every alberton no matter where they live no matter what corner of the province they're in
00:01:55.120 they can access the same information they can participate in the same economic upside and
00:02:00.160 opportunities and they can have as good of an education for their kids as anyone else in an
00:02:05.920 urban center and that is why we brought forward alberta's broadband strategy in 2022 that is why
00:02:11.760 i was able to secure 390 million dollars of funding from the province of alberta to invest
00:02:17.440 in this vital infrastructure and that is why i negotiated matching dollars from the federal
00:02:22.480 government of another 390 million dollars and since that time frame we have been hard at work
00:02:28.800 identifying the best partners who have the best projects to get the best connectivity
00:02:34.160 delivered to every home in alberta and i am so excited today to be able to talk about one of
00:02:41.040 those partnerships that is building connectivity infrastructure right here in strathcona county
00:02:46.320 I'm pleased to announce that the governments of Alberta and Canada have jointly invested more than $380,000 through the Universal Broadband Fund to bring high-speed Internet to more than 4,300 households in Strathcona County and the surrounding areas in a partnership with Internet Service Provider Switch.
00:03:06.380 And again, as Emily Lovely mentioned, we have CEO Darren Holkinson here with us.
00:03:11.280 Thank you, Darren, for being here.
00:03:12.380 Looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
00:03:14.240 This investment is a major step forward to bridging the digital divide in Alberta
00:03:18.200 and, of course, in my home community of Strathcona County.
00:03:21.640 For the folks that live out here in Cooking Lake and the surrounding areas,
00:03:24.860 this means, finally, you will have access to reliable, high-speed internet.
00:03:30.360 And it will allow you to connect with loved ones.
00:03:32.520 It will allow you to get better education opportunities for your kids.
00:03:35.640 It will allow you to fully participate in all our community has to offer.
00:03:39.500 And Alberta's government is firmly committed to ensuring that that same hope, that same opportunity, that same access to connectivity is going to be accessible and available to all Albertans.
00:03:50.540 And so that is, as I mentioned, with our broadband strategy and the $390 million of funding that we have committed, we are working hard to make sure that every single Albertan will have access.
00:04:00.340 And I'm pleased to say that to date, we have now allocated nearly $371 million through the Universal Broadband Fund to 62 different projects across the province.
00:04:12.720 And these projects will connect, once complete, over 51,000 households in 328 different communities to reliable, high-speed Internet.
00:04:23.260 So we're making great progress.
00:04:25.660 Always more work to do.
00:04:27.160 We always said that this was going to be a four-year plan.
00:04:29.340 we're at about the halfway point and we're over halfway done. This is great news. I want to just
00:04:34.740 again extend my congratulations to Switch on reaching this crucial stage of this build which
00:04:40.060 I understand is close to a month from completion and so this is not just hope far off on the
00:04:46.560 horizon. This is imminent. It's here. It's now. Construction is well underway on this project and
00:04:52.800 this is going to impact the communities in Strathcona County, Beaver County. It's going to
00:04:57.420 include parts of Sherwood Park. It's going to include Ardrossin. It's going to include,
00:05:01.100 as I said, Cooking Lake, as well as Half Moon Estates and Collingwood Cove and many other
00:05:06.400 great communities nearby. These investments are so important. They have such far-reaching impacts
00:05:13.020 to so many families, and I couldn't be happier to be making this announcement here today. So,
00:05:18.440 thanks again to Strathcona County for being here. Thank you, Deputy Mayor. Looking forward to hearing
00:05:22.400 from you shortly. Thank you, Councillors Nelson and Hartwick for being here to show your support.
00:05:26.380 Thank you, Emily Lovely, for all of your tireless advocacy in this important file and the work that you've done to support me on getting this done.
00:05:34.700 And just looking forward to celebrating this exciting step forward for connectivity for Strathcona County and surrounding communities.
00:05:41.000 With that, I'd like to pass the podium to my friend and colleague, Deputy Mayor Glenn Lawrence.
00:05:48.340 Thank you.
00:05:49.520 Good morning.
00:05:53.240 Well, thanks, everybody, for coming out today.
00:05:56.380 Unfortunately, I have to wear these glasses now, so that's the way it is these days.
00:06:03.480 I just want to also introduce my colleagues, Councillor Nelson and Councillor Hartwick, here
00:06:08.300 from Strathcona County Council.
00:06:12.060 Yes, for those who don't know me, my name is Glenn Lawrence.
00:06:15.220 I'm the Councillor here for Ward 7 and Deputy Mayor for Strathcona County.
00:06:20.320 It's my pleasure to be here today alongside Minister Glubish, my fellow councillors and
00:06:24.980 representatives from Switch Incorporated to recognize what this project means to us all.
00:06:32.340 I want to start by saying that this region is dear to my heart not just because I grew up here
00:06:37.460 but because it's natural untouched beauty and privacy and quiet living it offers.
00:06:45.860 I believe you feel the same way. I think we all appreciate our lifestyle
00:06:50.260 out here while recognizing that we need to stay connected with the world at large more than ever.
00:06:57.140 And of course that means embracing technology. As you know without reliable internet it's
00:07:02.100 challenging to live, learn, work and play like everybody does. I know our values haven't changed
00:07:08.900 too much. We still believe in hard work, supporting our neighbors and community and respecting the land
00:07:14.900 But I think we all deserve to put those feet up after a hard day's work and expect the Netflix to stay sharp or Facebook, our faraway friends without a digital frog in our throat.
00:07:31.200 A run or a run at Teams meetings without faces getting stuck in some silly way.
00:07:36.960 The internet is now a regular part of our day and high-speed internet is no longer a luxury, it's a necessity.
00:07:44.900 It's important today as roads, electricity, and running water, and it's the gateway to a connected and informed future.
00:07:53.280 That's why I'm very proud of the advocacy work that Strathcona County has done and continues to do to bring improved internet services to our communities.
00:08:03.320 With this investment in the future of our region, we can expect improved internet connectivity
00:08:10.020 for hundreds of rural households, numerous businesses and industries around the Cooking
00:08:16.240 Lake and surrounding communities.
00:08:18.500 We are immensely grateful to our provincial and federal partners, as well as Switch Incorporated
00:08:24.300 for ensuring that more people in our region can access high-speed internet.
00:08:28.920 As internet expansion is a federal undertaking, we will continue to advocate for better internet locally for all communities around Strathcona County so that everyone across the region can enjoy the same high standard of internet service.
00:08:46.960 That's what we're really looking for.
00:08:49.440 So, thank you.
00:08:58.920 Hello, everybody.
00:09:03.080 My name is Darren Hokanson, and I'm the CEO of SWITCH.
00:09:06.580 I'm excited to be here today.
00:09:09.040 As one of Canada's last family-owned telecom companies,
00:09:12.880 we are proud to celebrate 20 years of connecting remote regions
00:09:16.140 across this great province this October.
00:09:20.400 Today, I'm thrilled to announce a significant milestone,
00:09:23.320 the expansion of our air-fibre network.
00:09:25.540 This project will bring high-speed internet to over 9,000 underserved homes in Alberta,
00:09:32.560 offering speeds of up to 150 megabits per second for residential
00:09:36.760 and up to 1 gigabit per second for business in select areas.
00:09:41.240 This achievement would not have been possible without the incredible support
00:09:44.820 and partnership with the entire universal broadband team,
00:09:49.740 the rapid response team, Strathcona County, Beaver County,
00:09:53.060 County, Leduc County, Camrose County, and Lamont County, our dedicated local farmers
00:09:59.020 and residents, and of course, the Alberta government.
00:10:03.140 Your unwavering support has made this project a reality and we are deeply grateful.
00:10:08.380 As we move forward, let's remember the words of Albert Einstein, strive not to be a success,
00:10:14.900 but rather to be of value.
00:10:17.180 Together, we are making a valuable difference in our communities.
00:10:22.000 For myself and the entire team at Switch, thank you for your support and here's to many
00:10:27.280 more years of connecting people and communities.
00:10:32.560 Thank you very much.
00:10:36.840 Thank you so much, Darren.
00:10:42.380 Once again I'd like to thank Minister Glubish, Deputy Mayor Lawrence and Darren for joining
00:10:47.060 us to celebrate this exciting news.
00:10:49.800 This investment is another step forward on the path to ensuring every Albertan is connected
00:10:54.100 to high speed.
00:10:55.260 This is great news for residents who call this part of Alberta home.
00:11:00.180 Thank you everyone.
00:11:01.180 We will now move over to the media and the Q&A.
00:11:04.360 Yes, that brings us to the end of the formal portion of the news conference.
00:11:08.300 We'll now move to the Q&A section.
00:11:09.840 We'll start with reporters in the room.
00:11:11.460 If there are any, if you could step forward to the mic, please, and name yourself and
00:11:16.240 your media outlet.
00:11:17.240 Hi, Theodora McLeod with Sherwood Park News. I'm just wondering, is there any guarantee with this service that costs will be comparable to those that are paid by people living in the cities?
00:11:29.620 So when we navigate which partners we're going to select through our funding, we cover a number of things.
00:11:36.920 First, we want to make sure that the partners have the technical expertise to deliver a reliable service,
00:11:43.020 because if folks log in and then they can't actually access anything, then it was all for nothing,
00:11:47.560 and I don't want to subsidize anything that doesn't work.
00:11:51.100 Second, we want to make sure that the company is stable enough to finish the job and see it through to completion,
00:11:57.960 and then offer that service for the long term.
00:12:01.020 Third, we want to make sure that it's scalable going into the future
00:12:03.540 because over time, technology evolves
00:12:05.300 and connectivity speed requirements are going to go up.
00:12:10.940 So these are all very important things.
00:12:12.700 But, of course, we also want to make sure that affordability is in there.
00:12:16.440 We don't want someone having to pay $300 a month for an internet.
00:12:18.860 That would be ridiculous.
00:12:20.020 So I don't have the exact speed specifically.
00:12:22.480 You could probably talk to the Switch folks about that,
00:12:24.180 but I'm confident that we're going to have reasonably priced, reliable, high-speed internet,
00:12:29.980 and that's great news for this community.
00:12:32.440 Did you have a follow-up?
00:12:33.460 Yes.
00:12:35.000 Separate question, actually.
00:12:36.340 Will any of this expansion require construction in rural areas of the county?
00:12:42.300 Well, this is connectivity and infrastructure that's going to serve the rural pockets of
00:12:48.900 Strathcona County, absolutely, and if you want some really specifics about that,
00:12:53.600 I'd encourage you to talk to Darren and his team.
00:12:56.240 But this is a wireless-based approach,
00:12:59.760 so a lot of this is going to be tower-based
00:13:01.620 with wireless signals going out into the community.
00:13:04.000 But they do something a little bit more unique
00:13:05.540 compared to some of the traditional tower-based wireless technology.
00:13:11.000 They're focused on making sure that their towers are closer to the customers
00:13:14.840 and they don't spread them out as far.
00:13:17.240 And as a result, you can count on a much higher quality service
00:13:20.860 with less degradation because you're not as far from the tower so so that's one of the things that
00:13:25.420 really excites me about this project and i think is one of the reasons why we chose switch as the
00:13:28.940 successful partner for this region awesome thank you any other questions from the room
00:13:34.540 we'll turn to the phones operator can you put through our first caller
00:13:40.060 we have no questions on the phone thank you that concludes our press conference for today thanks
00:13:45.340 Thanks, everybody.
