00:00:00.000 Democracy in the Western world started with the Magna Carta, and what that did is it took the sovereignty from the sovereign, and that's where the word comes from, took it away from the sovereign and brought it down to the nobles.

00:00:15.640 And what happened in the UK and Britain was that sovereignty moved down and down and down to lower levels until the point where it reached all people.

00:00:27.600 And then what happened is in 1763, the declaration of 1763, and that's where the parliament in

00:00:35.600 Britain, through the king, had him declare that indigenous people also had sovereignty.

00:00:40.720 This was momentous. And then in 1764, the king, in conjunction with the British parliament,

00:00:46.480 did the Quebec Act. And the Quebec Act declared that French people had sovereignty also.

00:00:56.640 It was so extraordinary that the Americans took those two acts as provocation, and they viewed

00:01:14.160 sovereign level, the king. And the United States decided that, no, those were provocations,

00:01:25.200 did was they took the sovereign power of the king and they transferred that to the state. And that

00:01:30.240 is the first demarcation difference between Canada and the United States.
