00:04:46.340 Well, today's show, we're going to be dealing with a couple really big hot topics.
00:04:50.740 Jason Kenney has put Alberta under a third lockdown.
00:04:55.700 You've already had two lockdowns.
00:04:57.500 Yes, but what about third lockdown?
00:04:59.240 Well, we're going to talk about third lockdown today.
00:05:01.740 Part of that lockdown was shocking news this morning
00:05:04.420 that the Alberta RCMP, under orders of the provincial government
00:05:07.860 and Alberta Health Services have raided and barricaded the Grace Life Church in Stony
00:05:13.560 Plain, Alberta, just west of Edmonton. Incredible stuff. I couldn't believe my eyes. And I am used
00:05:19.980 to seeing some pretty crazy shit right now. And news that I'm sure many viewers will have an
00:05:27.200 opinion on. Calgary Mayor Nahid Nenshi will not seek re-election. And Dave will tell us why so
00:05:33.840 much of the mainstream media are very upset with him for having the exclusive scoop on it.
00:05:39.020 So we'll start off with Kenny putting Alberta under a third lockdown. Incredible stuff. We've
00:05:48.600 had two lockdowns now already. The second lockdown essentially started to break early in the new year
00:05:55.900 when restaurant owners just said, screw it, I'm going to go out of business if I don't reopen.
00:05:59.760 And that started a real chain reaction across the province of these rogue restaurants, really, that forced the government's hand here, that there was a minor caucus revolt.
00:06:09.600 We had this staged reopening.
00:06:12.020 Kenny, we would get to, we would meet these targets, and Kenny would say, no, we're not going to do it anyway.
00:06:17.620 And then there'd be a bit of a caucus revolt, revolt from conservative members and voters, and then he'd back down.
00:06:24.060 Seems he's not backing down now.
00:06:25.400 In fact, he is doubling down.
00:06:27.600 He is quadrupling down.
00:06:28.860 He is going down hard right now, I think in more than one way right now.
00:06:33.440 We're now into a Friday, as of Friday, we're going to be in a hard lockdown.
00:06:37.280 Dave, why don't you tell us what the hell's happening?
00:06:39.940 What a busy news week already, Derek, and it's only Wednesday.
00:06:43.460 Yeah, it's like an episode of Back to the Future.
00:06:45.200 We're now back to phase one of lockdown rules and regulations in Alberta.
00:06:52.280 Some stuff like retail occupancy rates came into effect immediately.
00:06:57.540 Other things like shutting down indoor dining comes at 11.59 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
00:07:08.340 But they are going to allow patios to remain open.
00:07:13.340 How people will be able to access washrooms, Derek, is a little bit beyond me at the moment.
00:07:18.060 But unfortunately, my neighborhood pub has got an outdoor patio of six tables,
00:07:23.020 and they've decided that they're not going to bother.
00:07:26.120 it's just not not worth their while uh so we're back to phase one uh you mentioned the restaurant
00:07:32.040 revolt uh in phase two already we're hearing from businesses across alberta that have had enough
00:07:39.000 and they are not going to uh follow this lockdown our edmonton reporter alex dolly wall is working
00:07:45.960 on this story uh he's contacting these businesses but certainly a lot of them out there have had
00:07:52.200 enough and they've decided not to follow it and it's also caused a bit of a revolt in the
00:07:57.080 conservative movement uh federal conservative health critic michelle rebel obviously an mla
00:08:03.000 from calgary has tweeted her disappointment in the kenny's move saying there should be a
00:08:09.800 better path forward numerous ucp mlas have already come out and blasted the idea
00:08:18.120 Angela Pitt, Nathan Cooper, Drew Barnes, Jason Stefan have all issued statements
00:08:26.460 saying this is not the right thing to do so I've got that story up on the
00:08:31.960 Western Standard online site now and that'll be being updated throughout the
00:08:37.800 days various other other people come forward but I think Kenny's got a growing
00:08:44.100 revolt on his hands, Derek. And we'll talk about it later with Grace Life Church. When people see
00:08:51.300 what's happening there, they may just wonder what the hell kind of country we're living in.
00:08:56.500 Maybe I got this wrong. I think I said, did I say Stony Plain was Grace Life Church?
00:09:00.900 You did.
00:09:01.460 Is it actually Spruce Grove?
00:09:02.740 Spruce Grove.
00:09:03.620 Okay. Well, Mary Fair said we had that wrong. So thank you, Mary, for pointing that out.
00:09:09.460 So, Corey, this is, I mean, I've been getting notice of this coming from people inside the UCP, even some federal conservatives who are quite plugged into the UCP government here, telling me that Kenny's been pushing hard for a lockdown behind the scenes for some time here, but he's been terrified of a caucus revolt.
00:09:29.720 He's been terrified of a revolt by members when his leadership is already, I think, fairly in jeopardy, I think it's fair to say.
00:09:37.120 but he's gone forward with it he's all in do you think does Kenny believe he has the political
00:09:45.560 capital to do this or why do you think he really why do you think he's going forward do you think
00:09:51.300 he really thinks he's going to kind of he's going to save a bunch of people relative to the
00:09:55.480 consequences of this and does he have does he does he have the political capital to do something
00:10:00.540 like this which is so white hotly opposed by the vast majority of people who voted for him in the
00:10:06.700 last election? Well, there's a few things going on. I mean, the first part is if a person really
00:10:11.440 believes these restrictions will slow the thing and save lives, which is very questionable. We've
00:10:16.740 seen enough over the last year, areas where the experts all said there's going to be explosive
00:10:21.180 infections because of reduced lockdowns. Those exploding infections didn't happen. Other areas
00:10:26.880 with very strong restrictions and their infections are as high or even sometimes more than other
00:10:31.080 areas. But if you truly believe that this will work, this will save lives, you do have to
00:10:35.780 give a little bit of sympathy if you're in the premier's shoes and you think if i do this some
00:10:40.520 people will not die that gives you quite a motivation to push ahead even if it may trouble
00:10:45.760 your caucus may trouble your supporters may trouble your base if if enough of those experts
00:10:49.500 and i swear i'll never be able to write experts without quotes around it again but if you're
00:10:54.120 you know he's surrounded by them they're constantly talking in his ears they're constantly giving
00:10:58.020 the sob stories from hospital and so on of people who probably would have passed anyways within a
00:11:02.900 few weeks, but whatever, that's a separate discussion. He's concerned. I mean, he's not
00:11:06.260 totally heartless. He thinks he's saving people, but the capital he's expending on it is something
00:11:10.880 else. And there was a lot to be read into yesterday. He definitely allowed his MLAs to give
00:11:15.680 voice to it. He knows there's a threat there because he didn't say we're also going to crack
00:11:19.160 down on our representatives and not let them speak up on this. He said right off the bat,
00:11:23.900 they're going to speak up. We're going to hear from others. One thing, and I'm not giving him
00:11:28.180 a lot of credit this week for a number of things. I mean, my column wasn't exactly nice to him, but
00:11:32.160 I was happy at least to see he came out
00:11:34.320 and took his lumps you know I mean
00:11:35.840 other times it's been a negative announcement
00:11:37.980 he just leaves it to Shandro and
00:11:39.640 he vanishes so he was there in person
00:11:42.360 noticeably he didn't take any questions
00:11:44.220 from the western standard or even Rick Bell
00:11:46.160 today he seems
00:11:48.020 this kind of thing he's only
00:11:50.360 willing to take criticism from the left
00:11:52.120 he's not you know so when you get
00:11:53.820 media looks like us Rick Bell
00:11:56.360 stuff like that he's just
00:11:58.140 terrified of that so he wouldn't even take
00:12:00.280 questions from anyone who might question
00:12:02.120 what he's doing from a more conservative perspective. And it's still not enough. Not
00:12:05.140 Lee's still doing cartwheels. She's still accusing him of everything she's accused him of. Now they're
00:12:09.120 all over him saying, well, how are you going to save all the businesses you just crushed?
00:12:12.100 Which is a good question because every time they do this, a number of businesses don't come back
00:12:16.680 and it's their final straw. With these ever moving goalposts, I mean, the only thing that stopped the
00:12:21.880 revolt before, as you were talking about, was that they put a light at the end of the tunnel. They
00:12:25.440 said, look, everybody, if you follow the rules and we hit these benchmarks, this is what we're
00:12:30.080 going to do. And yesterday he came up and said, well, there's variants. So that was all bullshit.
00:12:33.900 We've moved the goalposts and now this is what you got to do. And you know what? I don't believe
00:12:38.080 them. I don't believe them. I don't know what's going to come up next time. Business owners don't
00:12:41.820 know what's going to come up next time. Why sink yourself further in debt? They're probably maxed
00:12:47.440 their credit cards and taken every program already. I mean, the CFIB put out what your
00:12:51.680 average small business has taken on over a hundred thousand in debt just this year.
00:12:55.100 it's killing them it's just killing them and how can you plan and borrow and take a chance again
00:13:00.440 when you don't know what they're going to say three weeks from now they keep saying that this
00:13:03.560 is what's going to happen but I don't believe them I just don't believe them anymore yeah well
00:13:08.360 judging by the comments I don't think many people who voted UCP do um you know I've come to
00:13:14.480 understand during this pandemic that if you want to know what Jason Kinney is going to do in a week
00:13:19.380 look at Rachel what Rachel Notley is saying today um you know Rachel Notley comes out she's always
00:13:24.940 saying harder lockdowns she called for the complete government forced closure of the church
00:13:30.420 she has called for harder lockdowns she calls for harder mask mandates and everything um 0.52
00:13:37.020 and kenny always says no and all you're being true deconian and then a week later he pretty
00:13:40.800 much always does exactly what she says uh dave where is rachel maybe you can actually give it
00:13:46.280 from both sides what's been the reaction uh from you know rachel notley on the left and say wild
00:13:52.900 Rose on the right?
00:13:56.260 Rachel Notley's been very quiet on Twitter about the lockdown. She's been tweeting the last 24
00:14:02.700 hours mainly about the new UCP curriculum. But before that, she was quite vocal in demanding
00:14:10.300 that Premier Kenney go back into the third wave. The far right, Paul Hinmans, he'll be furious,
00:14:20.600 absolutely furious he's been calling for the lockdown stand basically since day one with some
00:14:28.200 some very strong language i think it's interesting to know what's happening in ontario right now
00:14:33.960 they had 3200 new cases today and that's pretty well comparable on a per capita basis to what
00:14:41.560 alberta's been getting uh premier ford in ontario we should stay at home order today
00:14:47.720 and it looks like they're going to be canceling in-class learnings and of course the big concern
00:14:52.360 now that uh premier kenny and dr hinshaw bring up our variants and the variants are really growing
00:14:58.760 exponentially in alberta i think we had over 600 uh 600 variants uh yesterday and that's you know
00:15:08.360 that that's been going at an incredible rate so yeah kenny seems to be really really caught between
00:15:13.640 been a rock and a hard place. And I think you guys are right when he says, well, if I can save
00:15:19.240 one life, maybe it's better than all these businesses going under. But remains to be seen
00:15:25.280 what his electorate think. Yeah. Well, let's segue in because I have a feeling that the
00:15:36.100 conservative electorate in Alberta is probably not very happy about police raiding a church
00:15:42.500 and barricading it. I have never seen that in Canada. As far as I'm aware, there's no Waco
00:15:50.480 incident with everybody inside with guns. There's no hostages that I'm aware of. It's just they hold
00:15:56.420 services. So this morning, you know, I come into the office and we start getting these bizarre
00:16:04.280 reports. What I'm finding hard to believe is getting further and further along a certain
00:16:11.960 continuum. I wouldn't have even believed that Kenny would do a third lockdown, but it seemed
00:16:18.440 that the past, you know, churches were winning, independent restaurants were winning. They seem
00:16:23.800 to have decided that, you know, they're going to tighten the fist rather than open up a hand.
00:16:29.800 People have lost, you know, as you put it really well in your column, Corey,
00:16:33.880 a lot of people believe that Kenny and the UCP have lost the moral right to govern right now.
00:16:38.120 Now, the Snowbird scandal certainly did not help their credibility about us all being in this together.
00:16:43.660 Lockdowns are clearly not working.
00:16:45.380 If they worked, the first or the second probably would have worked.
00:16:49.380 They didn't.
00:16:50.860 They're temporary measures that destroy the economy and destroy society in the meantime.
00:16:55.360 And maybe they bring things, you know, cases down a little bit.
00:16:58.560 But, you know, it requires mass 99% plus compliance.
00:17:03.680 We didn't have compliance.
00:17:05.140 we probably had maybe 50% compliance before this lockdown right now. Now, they seem to be just
00:17:14.700 tightening an iron fist, and they're sending a message that civil disobedience will not be
00:17:19.600 tolerated anymore. I think they're trying to send a clear message to the independent restaurants
00:17:23.920 who are thinking they might refuse to comply with the lockdown shutdown order, and to other churches.
00:17:31.840 I want to know, we'll go to Dave first. I should have gone to Dave already. Dave, why don't you just tell us how this developed this morning with the incredible sight of seeing the Grace Life Church barricaded, surrounded by armed police officers.
00:17:51.680 As you said, Derek, it was a truly, truly shocking incident.
00:17:56.460 AHS had finally reached their tipping point.
00:17:59.540 They've had enough of Pastor James Coates and Grace Life Church being packed to the rafters with hundreds of people every Sunday and this last week, Good Friday as well.
00:18:10.680 Coach, you'll remember, was jailed for 35 days for basically ignoring repeated requests, repeated RCMP tickets and whatnot.
00:18:23.340 He just kept going, and he refused bail conditions that he would have had to stop preaching.
00:18:29.580 He stood by his beliefs and suffered more than a month in jail.
00:18:33.900 He got out and back to where we started, preaching again.
00:18:37.660 So, Don Raid this morning, Derek, AHS, along with numerous RCMP officers, arrived and quickly constructed a plywood barricade all around the church.
00:18:51.260 Absolutely incredible.
00:18:52.720 Never seen anything like it before.
00:18:55.260 You know, but they obviously had to do something because Grace Life was basically thumbing
00:19:04.520 their nose at COVID loss, and they finally reached their tipping point.
00:19:10.820 I don't think any of us would have guessed that they would build a fence around it or
00:19:14.780 barricaded it.
00:19:15.780 It was truly a shocking move by the government, but as you say, it shows they seem to be not
00:19:22.400 fooling around anymore.
00:19:25.140 And this is what they're going to do to people who don't or churches that don't toe the line.
00:19:31.660 There's obviously been churches in Calgary that have also refused to close and have continued with Sunday services.
00:19:38.720 So it'll be interesting to see if they get boarded up in the next day or two.
00:19:45.400 Corey, correct me.
00:19:47.600 I don't know if you disagree.
00:19:48.560 but I think a move this politically explosive would not have been undertaken by the police
00:19:54.400 and AHS without consulting the government, the attorney general and therefore the premier.
00:20:02.800 This is clearly a politically loaded situation. While the police don't directly report to the
00:20:11.600 government, AHS does. And technically this was AHS just being carried out by police state.
00:20:17.040 ahs said we need men with guns to enforce this uh so first i want to know you know what to what
00:20:23.760 degree do you think there was political involvement or sign off on the raid and barricading of grace
00:20:30.800 life church and second what what is going to be the fallout from these images when we look
00:20:37.760 at a church of being surrounded like it was uh a meth lab being being walled off by armed police
00:20:46.800 yeah well as if the imagery wasn't bad enough to have a pastor locked up for a month that
00:20:51.040 made international news they decided to outdo themselves and put international imagery and
00:20:56.080 this is going to go around again of what is supposed to be a democratic developed nation
00:21:01.280 actually boarding up a religious institution it is just insane but it was a political decision
00:21:08.800 i'm sure it was done after a lot of thought and as david been talking about as we know
00:21:13.200 The last time that, and you know what? They've never willingly caved on these restrictions. The last time they caved was only because churches and restaurants and others, I mean, it was starting a domino effect. We were starting to see others raising their hands and saying, you know, I'm going to open in defiance and I'm going to open in defiance. And that's when they brought in those phase steps and they did cool it down for a while. They know this time that they're going to be furious. They know there's going to be rebellion. You know what? If I was a dictatorial authoritarian and I wanted to get this to work, I would do the same thing because they want to make an example right off the story.
00:21:43.180 start. And I noticed a couple of restaurants already on social media said, we're going to
00:21:46.800 defy the order. And I'll bet you it's not going to be polite police and AHS showing up now and
00:21:51.980 handing out a ticket or a warning. They're going to treat them like the church. They're going to
00:21:55.840 lock that place up. They are going to try and nip this in the butt. And it's only going to go one 0.97
00:22:00.020 of two ways. They're either going to actually cow these churches and restaurants, or they're just 0.78
00:22:05.420 going to inflame them. And they are going to have a real problem on their hands. Because I could see
00:22:10.040 other religious institutions starting to circle the wagons and say hey you've gone too far we
00:22:15.040 weren't with this we weren't doing that but we are not going to let a government shut down churches
00:22:19.800 and other restaurants again their backs on the wall they're facing bankruptcy hey guess what
00:22:24.160 jason you can only bankrupt them once so they got nothing to lose in staying open anymore they really
00:22:29.660 don't so he's taking a real gamble here he really is and this could ignite a pushback like he hasn't
00:22:37.220 seen before i did go out last week i went to see the the protests uh in princess island uh yeah
00:22:44.600 they talked about chemtrails and a whole number of other crazy crap so unfortunately from the
00:22:48.400 stage or just signs from the stage that was their main speaker their first speaker from the stage
00:22:52.380 they had people going on about chemtrail conspiracies yep he was saying he met with
00:22:55.440 justin trudeau because justin trudeau wanted them to run for his party and then he said i held
00:22:59.780 justin's hand i i posted the recording of it on my own channel and things and uh and and asked him
00:23:04.800 the chemtrails and justin turned all red and turned away because they are trying to
00:23:08.400 eugenics and control our minds so either way that's a digression but unfortunately that groundswell of 0.56
00:23:13.600 people common citizens getting up and rebelling obviously isn't happening and it won't with that
00:23:17.760 crowd but we are seeing it with businesses and churches and if this sort of thing keeps up uh
00:23:23.200 again it'll go one of two ways either they will all back down and we're going to live in this
00:23:26.960 police state or the churches and restaurants are going to say no we are not complying this time
00:23:32.400 it's going to be a very interesting week to watch that is the big question is this crackdown going
00:23:40.480 to be hard enough to scare churches scare businesses into compliance or is it going to
00:23:46.800 inflame the backlash uh dave i know you and uh alex dolly wall who we have at edmonton have
00:23:54.160 been working on this particularly with some of the restaurants and businesses uh what are we seeing
00:23:59.760 so far from some of these businesses that refused, who reopened illegally in the restaurant
00:24:06.040 revolution early in the new year?
00:24:08.620 What are we hearing from them?
00:24:10.520 Well, I don't think they're going to close.
00:24:12.520 And we're hearing from even more businesses, new businesses that weren't involved in the
00:24:16.980 first lockdown or went along with all the regulations.
00:24:21.300 They've had enough.
00:24:22.640 Corey just hit the head perfectly, I think.
00:24:25.360 You can only bankrupt a business once.
00:24:28.200 For many people, this is their only livelihood.
00:24:33.200 This is what they've invested their lives in.
00:24:35.500 And they're, as Corey mentioned already, they're taking on hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt in each business.
00:24:42.620 How much can they take?
00:24:44.540 Somewhere they're going to draw the line.
00:24:46.800 And at some point, they're going to say, to heck with it.
00:24:50.600 We're going to keep our doors open.
00:24:52.540 And, hey, all the other tickets have been thrown out so far.
00:24:55.780 If I was a restaurant owner, I'd be saying the same thing.
00:24:59.540 There's not a single ticket that's stuck, so I'm going to have a go at it.
00:25:05.220 In my neighborhood pub, they apparently showed Kenny's announcement on the big screen TV.
00:25:10.720 It was met with resounding boos.
00:25:13.520 Kenny got booed at your pub?
00:25:14.660 Kenny got booed at my pub.
00:25:15.880 You almost live in his writing.
00:25:17.380 Well, I almost live in his writing.
00:25:18.940 it's a very conservative uh writing and the people in there are frankly angry now they're
00:25:26.460 they're past the resignation stage they're they're into they're into angry um
00:25:33.900 yeah it's and i think you're going to see more and more businesses uh
00:25:39.660 stay open we're staying open aren't we derek we're not closing well now it's voluntary wink wink
00:25:46.220 you know people you know no one's got to be here but uh the office is opening we've only got five
00:25:51.180 people in the office uh for our calgary headquarters we're not going anywhere i bought a new doormat
00:25:57.180 today uh just said get a warrant my wife saw i posted a picture of it my wife sent me a message
00:26:02.300 saying she really doesn't want that at the house i might but i might put it at the office here
00:26:06.300 uh because this is still private property and i'll be damned if we let anyone in here without
00:26:10.380 a warrant who isn't invited in yeah that's what uh i'm sure you've all seen the video of
00:26:15.340 Arthur Poslowski and what he did to Calgary police and bylaw officers and AHS when they raided his
00:26:22.220 church on Good Friday. He refused to let them in, told them to come back when they had a warrant,
00:26:29.100 called them all sorts of names, Nazis and scum and Gestapo and increasingly raised his voice
00:26:35.660 to a yelling pitch. But the authorities in the end, they just slinked away down the road.
00:26:40.940 So, I mean, I'm sure the officers themselves felt guilty.
00:26:44.560 They're only following their orders.
00:26:47.200 But they should have known better to go into a place, a church, without a warrant.
00:26:50.160 Well, they were ordered to do something illegal.
00:26:51.600 I mean, the police could be ordered to do something that is wrong, like, I don't know, beating up people for playing hockey.
00:26:57.600 But in this case, the police were performing an illegal action.
00:27:02.100 They entered the church without a warrant.
00:27:05.240 They must be invited into a private property.
00:27:07.920 They were not invited in.
00:27:08.880 they just walked right in like they own the place and uh whatever else you think of uh how do you
00:27:14.960 say his last name again palowski palowski yeah uh it's a different difficult polish name palowski
00:27:20.920 um whatever you think of pastor palowski that is you know i think the names i mean he's he has
00:27:30.340 every right to call him that i personally maybe wouldn't have used the names but whatever that's
00:27:34.220 within his rights but in general what he did is exactly what you should do when police violate
00:27:38.620 your constitutional rights against unreasonable search and seizure, which means you are required
00:27:43.160 to have a warrant to enter a private property unless you have reasonable grounds to believe
00:27:47.840 there is current ongoing criminal activity taking place, that there's urgent need to enter.
00:27:53.620 And everybody needs to know this is not under criminal law. This is provincial statute. It is
00:27:58.460 under the same category as getting a speeding ticket. They can fine you. They can even jail
00:28:04.420 you in some circumstances but it's not criminal law uh and that and the police can only enforce
00:28:09.640 criminal law in that respect uh with a warrant you cannot violate the need to have a warrant
00:28:14.860 over a provincial statute even if you know that they're doing something wrong so if it's like a
00:28:20.080 noise complaint you can't just barge into someone's house um so what he did though is essentially is
00:28:25.900 exactly what you should do do not let them speak do not let them justify their illegal presence
00:28:31.240 you just say, get out, you cannot return without a warrant. They'll say something again, as they
00:28:35.920 did. He says, get out, do not come back without a warrant. Do not let them get a word in. They
00:28:41.500 are breaking the law. They are breaking your constitutional freedoms. Do not require any
00:28:46.880 agent of the government onto your private property unless you want them there or if they have a
00:28:52.860 warrant. That's it. I'll bet the lawyers at the Justice Center for Constitutional Freedom are
00:28:58.360 run off their feet working around the clock.
00:29:00.860 I think they're looking their lips now with illegal entry of police into churches
00:29:05.640 and police shutting down and barricading churches.
00:29:09.140 I mean, the Justice Center, John Carpe, I think business is going to be booming.
00:29:13.420 I did a story earlier this week about a poor Manitoba woman
00:29:16.820 had to go down to the States for some medical treatment,
00:29:19.900 came back across the border, and her PCR test had run out two hours ago.
00:29:25.860 Imagine that, two hours a year late,
00:29:27.540 and all the tests were negative.
00:29:29.620 They took her to a COVID isolation center,
00:29:33.100 kept her there, and fined $18,000, this family.
00:29:37.460 Her, her mother, and her three kids.
00:29:40.460 $18,000.
00:29:42.440 The JCCF represented them, and hey, guess what?
00:29:45.980 The charges were dropped.
00:29:47.620 Well, we've had them on before.
00:29:51.160 I don't know if any of them are watching right now,
00:29:52.820 but go to jccf.ca slash donate.
00:29:55.620 That'll go to the Justice Center for Constitutional Freedoms.
00:29:58.500 These guys really have, without the work they've been doing, I think things would be even worse.
00:30:03.720 Governments will do every single thing they think they can get away with.
00:30:07.880 And we've got a group out there that is making the government sweat.
00:30:12.400 So I'm really to have them out there.
00:30:14.080 I hope everybody will consider donating.
00:30:17.460 Corey, anything else on the rating of churches here?
00:30:20.820 No, just likewise.
00:30:21.960 And I appreciate Carpe and the others with the Justice Center standing up for them.
00:30:25.100 You know, I mean, Art Pawlowski, yeah, I'm not a fan of him or his style of promotions or some of his thoughts.
00:30:30.900 But this was odious.
00:30:32.620 He has every right to be Art Pawlowski.
00:30:34.980 He has every right to have his congregation, to have his rights to property.
00:30:38.000 And as you said, that's the way to deal with it.
00:30:40.680 Don't negotiate.
00:30:41.720 There's nothing to negotiate.
00:30:43.180 Come back with a court order if you want to go that route.
00:30:45.540 Otherwise, there's nothing else to talk about.
00:30:47.840 You know, and it is a tip for other churches because, you know what, as I said, they boarded up that one.
00:30:51.760 They're ready to board up others.
00:30:52.820 So we'll see if they spring up, and we'll see what happens.
00:30:56.540 Yeah.
00:30:57.700 Okay, well, we're going to turn to happier news.
00:31:02.660 Calgary Mayor Nahid Nenshi has announced that he is not seeking re-election.
00:31:10.040 I think this has been a very poorly kept secret for quite some time, but we were waiting for when it was going to officially come.
00:31:14.900 um i guess uh you know he had a a press conference scheduled for 5 15 uh calgary's time
00:31:23.340 yesterday and the press were all uh behaving themselves in an embargoed lockup and then
00:31:29.960 someone uh kind of wrecked their day dave why don't you tell us about um the big scoop yeah
00:31:36.340 sorry mayor nancy it was me that wrecked your day uh as you said all the media being told at city
00:31:43.200 hall that this was going to happen and they had to sign an embargo saying they wouldn't say anything
00:31:47.740 about it until 5 15 but uh the city doesn't invite us to their events so uh we knew nothing
00:31:53.780 about the uh the embargo i don't think we would have signed it anyways would we but uh uh we didn't
00:31:59.060 know anything about it uh the uh sources uh started getting to us early afternoon to telling us what
00:32:05.520 was going to happen. So we went with it. Had it before all the other media. Nenshi himself
00:32:15.740 said it was maybe time to let somebody else in. He's been there since 2010. I'm sure you
00:32:22.320 guys will talk about some of his highlights and lowlights. Interestingly, our sources
00:32:30.560 say, the same ones who told us he was going to resign, say he's going to throw his support
00:32:35.700 behind Councillor Judy Gondek in the upcoming election. Her and Councillor Farkas, Jeremy
00:32:43.140 Farkas, seem to be the frontrunners at the moment. And Nenshi and Gondek have been friends
00:32:51.100 for a while, supportive of each other on council. And interestingly, Derek, Gopnik's campaign
00:32:57.000 is being run by Stephen Carter. You'll remember him from Nenshi's first election in 2010.
00:33:03.560 He helped get Nenshi elected, also did some work for Alison Redford. He, after a few months,
00:33:11.400 left there with a handsome package. Very handsome. Very handsome package. One of the
00:33:16.920 greatest front pages in Calgary Sun history there. I think I was the one who foiped and got that.
00:33:22.280 i think i did the i think i was the one who got his uh severance uh up there that's why he likes
00:33:28.280 me so much and why he continues to threaten uh well you know he stopped threatening to sue the
00:33:32.440 western standard after we did some news yeah but if you're watching steven uh our address is 1220
00:33:40.280 717 7th avenue southwest calgary we're still waiting for your lawyer's letter uh with the
00:33:47.400 the lawsuit. You said you were going to do it if we did this story. There must be a problem. I know
00:33:53.540 COVID may be a slow down the mail. Canada Post moves a little slowly. What Derek's talking about
00:33:58.620 is we broke a story earlier this year about Gondik sending out a mail, a very expensive mail out
00:34:05.520 to all the homes across the city. A former alderman came forward and wrote to the
00:34:10.620 elections officer demanding an investigation saying that she used third-party fundraising for
00:34:17.600 it. Stephen Carter denied that. He said the cost was about $37,000, if I remember. It was paid
00:34:25.280 directly out of campaign funds. We went with the story on the former alderman demanding an
00:34:31.660 investigation. Stephen Carter hid out on social media threatening to sue us, asking for the names
00:34:39.580 of our lawyers. But as you said, nothing yet. We've provided them all the information. I even
00:34:46.520 gave them our mailing address, full postal code, and gave them the name and address of our lawyer
00:34:52.420 where to send this to. Nothing from him. I'm disappointed. Slap lawsuits. That's what they're
00:35:00.320 all about. Yeah. Well, Corey, you know, you're a big fan of Mayor Nanchi, his purpleness.
00:35:12.240 Why do you think he's decided not to run? There's a few reasons. I mean,
00:35:17.120 to give a little more background, you know, just to come back to Carter, because
00:35:20.100 one of the things we have is a non-partisan system. But what you get then is informal parties,
00:35:25.960 and you get alliances, and you get groups. And a common denominator you see in the Nanchi
00:35:30.060 alliance is Stephen Carter. And, you know, you see in the same tactic being used, nobody likes 0.99
00:35:37.100 to run against an incumbent in the city. It's very difficult to unseat them. So Drew Farrell has
00:35:42.260 managed to keep that spot forever. And had Nenshi stayed in for quite some time, a lot of people
00:35:48.820 didn't enter the races because they figured, well, I just don't want to go head to head with those
00:35:52.080 incumbents. But you note that Drew hung on for a very long time before announcing she wasn't going
00:35:56.620 to run again. Meanwhile, Stephen Carter's partner, Heather McRae, was entrenching her campaign in
00:36:01.680 Ward 7. It would seem almost like she knew that Drew wasn't going to run, but Drew was kindly
00:36:06.020 creating interference to make sure nobody else entered the field. Enter the mayoral race. Now 0.93
00:36:11.460 ahead and then she knew a long time ago he was going to run again. There's no doubt about that.
00:36:15.480 I mean, the guy looks ahead. He's smart. He's a strategist. He knows too that he's more vulnerable.
00:36:20.680 He would have been more vulnerable running for mayor this time than any other time before.
00:36:23.360 so he would have kicked that campaign off
00:36:25.600 in December, I mean you want to raise funds
00:36:27.820 you want to get the troops on the ground
00:36:29.100 Jeremy Farkas is breathing down your neck
00:36:31.540 you've got to get out there and make sure you win this
00:36:34.020 because he doesn't want to go out with the elector's
00:36:36.160 foot on his butt
00:36:37.220 he decided not to run
00:36:39.460 in my view
00:36:41.440 it's still opinion
00:36:42.580 but then sat there and played an interference for a few months too
00:36:46.080 because he wants Jody Gondek to replace him
00:36:48.540 this way others aren't entering the field
00:36:50.120 he keeps it uncluttered
00:36:51.840 No coincidence, her campaign manager is Stephen Carter.
00:36:55.160 The bigger question now is what's he planned to do?
00:36:57.640 I mean, she's 49 years old.
00:36:59.660 He's got lots of ambition still.
00:37:02.660 He's not retiring at this point, though he does have three pensions to sit on.
00:37:07.620 He's going to be going somewhere else.
00:37:09.220 Is it going to be federal politics?
00:37:11.560 You know, there was, I believe, last fall he was over a meeting with Trudeau.
00:37:15.380 Were they arranging something?
00:37:16.920 Would it be senators?
00:37:17.880 You know, there are some Senate seats coming up,
00:37:20.140 And I'm pretty sure they're not going to be filled with whoever Albertans elect.
00:37:23.920 No, no.
00:37:24.660 So perhaps we'll be seeing Senator Ninchy or perhaps he might run in the coming federal election.
00:37:30.040 I mean, if he could get a toehold with a federal seat in Alberta, that's a guaranteed cabinet spot.
00:37:35.600 And maybe he's got his purple eyes looking at the big throne, though he doesn't play well with others.
00:37:39.980 So, I mean, in a party circumstance, he could have a really hard time.
00:37:43.680 There were some Twitter talk last night about, hey, we need a governor general.
00:37:49.060 His purpleness.
00:37:50.140 I think all that pomp and ceremony that comes with that job, that would feed his ego to no one.
00:37:57.760 If he gets to wear a crown, he might do it.
00:37:59.260 A career like that with people gushing around him could be his dream job.
00:38:03.460 The other thing we didn't talk about that my story did that none of the other mainstream media didn't even touch
00:38:10.760 is Nancy has to go to court in June in a lawsuit by Calgary businessman Mike Turingo.
00:38:16.600 So Tarengo is alleging that Nenshi breached the municipal government act, and I hate this
00:38:23.640 word because I can never say it right, penitentiary duties, basically he interfered with a development
00:38:32.200 that...
00:38:33.200 Alleged.
00:38:34.200 Alleged, sorry.
00:38:35.200 Alleged development, or alleged interference, when a development that Tarengo was trying
00:38:40.220 to get through, and Nenshi is alleged to have helped thwart that.
00:38:44.320 So having to go to court and deal with that, you know, just a few months before the election would have been another problem for the mayor.
00:38:54.480 Yeah, it'd be odd timing.
00:38:56.340 Well, Nitschie's biggest enemy has always been his own bloody mouth and his arrogance that just won't let him temper it.
00:39:01.540 And we saw that with the lawsuit that was settled with Cal Wenzel.
00:39:07.660 And, you know, with Uber, he came really close there too with his Boston Lyft ride there when he made up a story about Uber putting sex offenders in their cars.
00:39:20.060 I mean, could he take another, yeah, a bunch of that coming on, you know, another lawsuit dogging him when he wants to focus on a campaign.
00:39:29.820 It could have been the final straw.
00:39:31.460 He's known it's been coming for a while.
00:39:33.300 Yeah.
00:39:34.100 Okay, well, we're going to wrap it up there.
