00:00:00.000 I am happy to represent Canadians during this historic meeting.
00:00:14.000 In Canada, there was a town called Lytton.
00:00:18.000 I say was because on June 30th, it burned to the ground.
00:00:25.000 The day before, the temperature had hit 49.6 degrees Celsius,
00:00:31.000 the hottest ever recorded in our country.
00:00:35.000 Canada is warming, on average, twice as quickly as the rest of the world.
00:00:40.000 And in our north, it's three times quicker.
00:00:45.000 The science is clear. We must do more and faster.
00:00:52.000 So that's the pledge and the call I bring to this historic meeting.
00:00:59.000 We've already laid the groundwork.
00:01:01.000 In 2015, at the COP in Paris, I committed that Canada would put a price on pollution.
00:01:09.000 We did that.
00:01:11.000 And despite stiff political opposition, the Supreme Court upheld it and Canadians supported it in our last two elections.
00:01:23.000 We know pollution pricing is key to getting emissions down while getting innovation up and running.
00:01:33.000 Our carbon price trajectory is one of the most globally ambitious ones, and it's rising to $170 a tonne in 2030.
00:01:43.000 This is a meaningful price on pollution designed not just to make life cleaner, but also make life more affordable and less expensive for Canadians.
00:01:57.000 I call on other countries to do the same.
00:02:01.000 Just as globally we've agreed to a minimum corporate tax, we must work together to ensure it is no longer free to pollute anywhere in the world.
00:02:13.000 That means establishing a shared minimum standard for pricing pollution.
00:02:19.000 Of course, what's even better than pricing emissions is ensuring that they don't happen in the first place.
00:02:28.000 Which brings me to my next major commitment.
00:02:31.000 We'll cap oil and gas sector emissions today and ensure they decrease tomorrow at a pace and scale needed to reach net zero by 2050.
00:02:45.000 That's no small task for a major oil and gas producing country.
00:02:51.000 It's a big step that's absolutely necessary.
00:02:57.000 To do our part globally, we've doubled our climate financing, including up to a billion dollars for the transition away from coal.
00:03:07.000 And to help deal with the consequences of climate change, Canada is making our first contribution to the adaptation fund.
00:04:15.000 Over the next two weeks, we must demonstrate how we'll deliver on the promise of Paris with transparency and accountability.
00:04:28.000 To the world's most vulnerable who need us to act.
00:04:32.000 To Indigenous people who can show us the way.
00:04:36.000 To young people marching in our streets, in cities around the world.
00:04:41.000 We hear you. It's true. Your leaders need to do better.
00:04:48.000 That's why we're here today.
00:04:51.000 What happened in Lytton can and has and will happen anywhere.
00:05:00.000 How many more signs do we need?
00:05:03.000 This is our time to step up and step up together.
00:05:10.000 Merci.
