As you may know, each year the Canadian Federation of Independent Business typically celebrates
00:00:04.160
the end of January as Red Tape Reduction Awareness Week, and awards all Canadian jurisdictions
00:00:09.820
with a grade in its Red Tape Report Card based on their efforts to reduce red tape.
00:00:15.180
This year for Red Tape Awareness Week, the CFIB has chosen to focus on the importance
00:00:19.160
of reducing red tape in the face of the rising cost of living and doing business.
00:00:24.660
As the Minister responsible for red tape reduction, I can say that our red tape reduction efforts,
00:00:29.320
especially in the last several years, have been strongly focused on saving Albertans and
00:00:34.400
Alberta businesses time and money, making our province a more affordable place to live and
00:00:42.720
Since 2019, red tape reduction has been a major goal for the Alberta government, and we have
00:00:50.320
We understand that complicated regulations, onerous paperwork, and bureaucratic redundancies
00:00:56.720
cost Albertans valuable time and money, and that is time and money that doesn't need
00:01:03.640
We continue to make positive changes that directly benefit Albertans, and that has played a key
00:01:08.060
role in Alberta's economic growth by supporting employment, expanding skills and training, and
00:01:17.460
We have removed unnecessary barriers faced by job creators, enhancing Alberta's competitiveness,
00:01:22.660
allowing our job creators to do what they do best.
00:01:26.740
That is, undertake new investment and increase employment opportunities in Alberta.
00:01:31.740
In fact, by modernizing regulations and reducing administrative burden, we have saved Albertans and businesses
00:01:41.740
That's $2.7 billion to invest in the success of Alberta's economy.
00:01:47.660
Today, as we acknowledge the importance behind Red Tape Awareness Week, I am pleased to announce
00:01:52.860
that we have reached our goal to cut red tape across government by one-third.
00:01:58.620
We have been working diligently, engaging Albertans, and working closely with industry to identify
00:02:04.040
opportunities to streamline rules and processes, as well as simplify regulations.
00:02:10.820
We have implemented nearly 700 initiatives to reduce red tape since 2019.
00:02:15.940
Forty-one of those were recommendations that came directly from the public, and 200 were
00:02:24.360
About 80 initiatives, inspired by industry advice and feedback from Albertans, were implemented
00:02:29.820
in 2023 alone, and there's another 40 that are currently underway.
00:02:35.000
And since 2019, we've passed seven red tape reduction bills that have been creating meaningful
00:02:40.700
legislative changes, making life easier for Albertans.
00:02:45.780
But you don't just have to take our word for it.
00:02:49.120
Since 2019, the CFIB has been recognizing our hard work, and it's been reflected in our
00:02:56.820
Alberta has been a provincial leader in red tape reduction for the past three years, and
00:03:00.940
last year we were ranked as number one among the provinces with an overall grade of A-.
00:03:07.680
With another year of significant accomplishments under our belt, I look forward to the announcement
00:03:15.220
It's not just the provincial government that's making progress, though.
00:03:18.440
As we gather here in the heart of downtown St. Albert, I have to commend the City of St.
00:03:26.760
Initiatives like exploring regulatory changes to enable housing construction.
00:03:31.900
And providing tools like interactive maps and data portals.
00:03:36.100
And issuing development permits in less than five days.
00:03:39.780
And in case anyone didn't hear that, I'm just going to repeat it, that's development
00:03:45.720
And these are just three examples of the way the City of St. Albert makes it easy for Albertans
00:03:52.360
Though I'm sure their excellent municipal regulations aren't the only reason the City of St. Albert is
00:03:57.100
consistently ranked as Canada's top communities to live.
00:04:02.100
Now, looking forward, even with our one-third red tape reduction achievement and hopeful for
00:04:07.720
another respectable grade from CFIB, our job is far from finished.
00:04:13.620
We've worked hard to make these changes and must continue our efforts to keep complicated
00:04:18.340
processes and redundancies from creeping back in.
00:04:23.100
We will continue working with the public and industry to find new ways to simplify regulation
00:04:32.180
And to maintain the progress we've already made.
00:04:35.100
Our goal in red tape reduction has always been to make life easier for Albertans, and that's
00:04:42.100
I'd also like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that we're all partners in this
00:04:48.800
We were always open to feedback from Albertans.
00:04:52.040
If you or someone you know has encountered a process or regulation that seems unnecessarily
00:04:56.820
cumbersome, and if you have ideas on how to make it easier, we want to hear from you.

Since 2019, we've cut more than 200,000 pieces of red tape.
00:07:11.380
We've reached our goal of reducing it by one-third, but the hard work continues.
00:07:14.980
We're still looking for opportunities to cut red tape.
