00:12:01.000 Reading articles from 11 months ago, where they capture him, they kill him, they parade him on TV, they kill him again, they capture him again, and now he's on videos with Bin Laden and audiotapes with Bin Laden, and the government announced that this is just from the other day.

00:12:20.000 Of course, right on cue, Bush gives a speech saying that Bin Laden is deadly, will be reappearing like the jack-in-the-box, Any second now, and one hour after he did that, he pops out of the box right on time. 0.90

00:12:38.000 I don't know about you, but I'm getting really, really tired of this.

00:14:17.000 But one of the examples I used last week of this Orwellian lying is the Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld gets up and the week before they started the shock and awe campaign, the bombing of Iraq, with all the cruise missiles and stealth bomber bombs and the rest of it, and he says, look, don't worry, already two of the major army groups of the five have surrendered in Iraq, covertly to us, we're in contact with them by cell phone, landline, email, we have spies on the ground, Most of the military is already giving up.

00:14:54.000 That's why we're going to win this thing so easy.

00:14:59.000 Now, two days after they claimed that all military operations had ceased, Rumsfeld got on TV and said these stories that we paid off regular Army and that we paid off The Republican Guard and gold bars and euros and dollars, and that we had SAS and Delta Force on the ground and CIA doing it, and MI6, is totally false!

00:15:22.000 We never said that, we never paid anybody off, they all fought 100%, we had a total victory.

00:15:29.000 We fought their army 100%, and still we won.

00:15:35.000 Now I know you remember that.

00:15:37.000 They said, and Rumsfeld got up on TV and said, I never said we paid him off.

00:15:44.000 And the media did not counter him, did not call him on it.

00:15:54.000 It's like Ashcroft saying there is no Patriot Act II, there is no terror legislation, and the media didn't call him on it when it had been introduced for four months when he testified before the House and Senate.

01:10:54.000 At least in Savannah, they had to They had to carry ten badges, but mostly it would just be these notes, and frequently the slaves would forge notes for themselves.

01:12:11.000 So I traced it up through, starting with slave passes, and look at the introduction of photography And there are interesting historical lessons that happen.

01:12:19.000 Like, when photography was first being used by the police, when you first started having uniformed police forces in the U.S.

01:12:26.000 in the 1850s, people thought this was kind of extreme and sort of intense.

01:12:32.000 But the reassurance was that, don't worry, only criminals will be photographed.

01:12:36.000 Just really bad criminals, habitual criminals.

01:12:38.000 Those are the only people who will be photographed.

01:12:40.000 And sure enough, Totally, but surely everyone gets photo ID.

01:12:44.000 And then they phased in not just the photo ID, but now you've got to biometrically scan to get a license, your thumb, now the grocery store puts in the exact same system, the total control grid.

01:12:55.000 And it's interesting throughout history how the justifications don't change.

01:13:01.000 Don't worry, it's an outsider group that you're not part of.

01:14:09.000 They officially say that in their departmental reports, and then cynically lie on the news and say it isn't.

01:14:15.000 I mean, this is so premeditated.

01:14:18.000 Yeah, yeah.

01:14:19.000 And you know, even before the Patriot Act, When the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act required, at first it was supposed to be, you know, these easy warrants from the FISA court, a special foreign intelligence court.

01:14:31.000 Blanket warrants for all agents.

01:14:33.000 I mean, they never, as you I'm sure know, they turned down one, the FISA court turned down one warrant in its 20 year history.

01:14:41.000 And so, even before the Patriot Act, foreign intelligence didn't have to be the sole purpose of those investigations, it just had to be The, you know, the main purpose of the investigation.

01:14:52.000 And I interviewed plenty of lawyers who were dealing with regular, kind of like, you know, white-collar crime stuff, and regular criminal justice stuff, in which the warrants were received in these, like, little kangaroo courts.

01:15:04.000 They were all FISA warrants.

01:15:05.000 Now, to the extent that they're even going to get FISA warrants, that these warrants haven't just been, the need for them has been eliminated, but it changes the Patriot Act, and they just get administrative, you know, do this administratively.

01:15:17.000 Now, they say explicitly and openly that foreign intelligence doesn't have to be an important part of the investigation.

01:15:24.000 It just has to be part of the investigation.

01:15:27.000 I mean, so that's easy to do.

01:23:21.000 Where, this has been written about a lot of places, that the politicians own the prison companies, and they want fresh souls, and we've already got seven plus in the system.

01:23:31.000 Now they're putting out reports going, it'll be 30 million by the end of this decade.

01:23:34.000 Two years ago they were saying 30 million by the end of the next, you know, two decades from now.

01:23:39.000 Now it's, it's everything, and Lockheed Martin running the red light cameras.

01:23:44.000 Turned out they were shortening the old lights, causing death just to make more money.

01:23:49.000 We've got all this happening, and they've said, the RFID chips, the satellite boxes in the cars, it's going to be to tax us.

01:24:33.000 Partly because, you know, nobody's really an angel to everybody.

01:24:41.000 You know, so no one's immune from this stuff.

01:24:49.000 What is the importance of civil liberties?

01:24:51.000 Well, at one level, they protect the innocent from the excesses of the law, right?

01:24:56.000 But at another level, they protect certain types of guilt from justified forms of resistance.

01:25:03.000 Our country's entire history Progress of this country was made up of people resisting unjust laws.

01:25:16.000 If we have a society of total surveillance, what follows, logically, is a society of total obedience and total sheep, where nothing is questioned and where people never say, hey, wait a minute, you know, it's not right to work 10 hours a day.

01:25:38.000 It was in some Chicago papers that there was a strike going on.

01:25:41.000 The FBI showed up and said, you go home, we're going to charge you under the Patriot Act.

01:25:46.000 Larry Klayman of Judicial Watch, far from liberal, sued Cheney over Energy Commission documents.

01:25:52.000 When he showed up to drop the documents, they said, we will arrest you under the Patriot Act.

02:02:57.000 So you had Slaves, then you had prisoners, and you also had Chinese immigrants that everybody, all other Americans, really were down on, or many people were down on, in the 1870s, 1880s, I think, for very irrelevant reasons.

02:03:11.000 There was a serious economic crisis, and people were worried, and so politicians turned on the Chinese.

02:03:18.000 So the Chinese were subject, the first people who were really subject, a complete system of Federal tracking.

02:03:26.000 And they resisted in very ingenious ways.

02:03:29.000 They created what was called the Paper Suns industry, in which people would create these whole false identities so that they could come to California and work and then return to China.

02:03:39.000 And no one has ever actually really written about this history.

02:03:52.000 But I looked at this Not to the usual lens of legality-illegality, but in terms of a federal system of tracking a population and how that population cooperated to resist and subvert it.

02:04:19.000 You talk about, oh, it's just for those Arabs, or oh, it's just for these Jews, and then later everybody has to have the special papers for a job or go to the Gestapo or be in the Nazi party to be able to exist. 0.82

02:05:01.000 I think a thing that's important to mention too, I mean you talk about the ways in which the government pushes this type of technology and that's very important, but it's also important to note the history of how the private sector just moved around legislation.

02:05:14.000 For example, throughout the 19th century, there were efforts to create a national ID number.

02:05:20.000 Technically speaking, we don't actually have one.

02:05:23.000 We have the Social Security number and the driver's license number, which act as the same thing.

02:05:27.000 But Americans resisted that.

02:05:29.000 Through the 20s, through the 30s, they resisted bitterly.

02:05:31.000 J. Edgar Hoover led an attempt to create a national ID system and to have every person Fingerprinted, and he was defeated again and again and again.

02:05:42.000 Finally, in the early 60s, the banking industry was so upset that they couldn't get the government to create a national ID, that they just de facto, privately legislated that the social security number would be the national ID.

02:05:55.000 And they did this by meeting, and they were very open about it, they wrote about it in the Harvard Business Review, and they said, look, this is the way we do it.

02:06:00.000 Anyone who applies for a bank account or credit doesn't get it if they don't give us their social security number.

02:06:08.000 Lo and behold, it worked.

02:06:09.000 You have all the big businesses operating in concert and that's what turned the social security number into the national ID number that it is in reality.

02:06:18.000 And now the big banking system and the Association of Minnesota, just a few weeks ago, said we're going to make people biometrically thumb scan even if they have accounts with us in Arlington, Texas.
