01:25:47.000 And it said, well, these weren't conflict diamonds.

01:25:49.000 They're sold as conflict-free diamonds to America because the mine is run by the Congo government with the help of De Beers. 0.91

01:42:21.000 But if they've been bad, they've been buying some rebel diamonds, or Russian diamonds, or Australian diamonds, they'll cut their box and they might find worthless diamonds inside.

01:42:37.000 So again, this is how the Monopoly works.

01:42:40.000 You go in, and they hand you the box, and you've already prepaid, and that's what you get.

01:42:46.000 But if you've bought any of the diamonds that aren't part of the Monopoly, and I've heard that the Monopoly still controls, what, 95%?

01:42:56.000 No, they're marketing more like they've fallen back a bit.

01:43:00.000 It's more like they're marketing around 70% to 80% now.

01:43:04.000 So since I read articles about it a few years ago that they've even lost more control over their monopoly?

01:43:10.000 They always pretend to have more control than they really have.

01:43:13.000 But they have secret slush funds around to buy up diamonds in different countries.

01:43:19.000 And the trouble with the Canadian diamonds is that the Canadian companies and the Russian companies are outside De Beers.

01:43:27.000 But why should they cut the price of their stones when De Beers keeps the price high?

01:43:32.000 It doesn't pay them to undercut.

01:43:34.000 So there's a kind of informal cartel being organized, including the stones outside De Beers control, like the Canadian stones.

01:43:42.000 They're not undercutting De Beers stones, so they're getting ripped off too.

01:43:46.000 So, I mean, how much, you know, when an average merchant comes, do they say, this is how much money I want to pay, this is how many diamonds I want, or does De Beers tell them, this is how much money you've got to pay us, and then you'll just see what you get?

01:43:57.000 Oh no, this is a case that De Beers sets a price.

01:44:00.000 Totally sets a price.

01:44:02.000 And even tell us the miners contracted to it what the price is, what the value of their own stones are.

01:44:08.000 You know, you send your diamonds in and the customer De Beers would tell you what your diamonds are worth and pay that sum.

01:44:16.000 That's how the rough diamonds get sold to De Beers.

01:44:19.000 Okay, so somebody comes in and buys this black box, this case of diamonds.

01:44:24.000 What is the real value on average of what they really dug them out of the ground for versus what De Beers sells them wholesale?

01:44:33.000 I can't really tell, because it's very, very secret, that little bit of it.

01:44:38.000 But I think it would be less than a fifth, maybe less than a tenth of what they're actually paying.

01:44:46.000 It depends who you are, you see.

01:44:47.000 Like, there's this very powerful businessman, Maurice Templesman, in New York.

01:44:52.000 And he's been a very close friend of many Presidents.

01:44:56.000 And he's the most... and I have two chapters in my book about him.

01:44:59.000 He's the most powerful diamond merchant in the world.

01:45:03.000 And he's very, very close to the CIA.

01:45:05.000 And he's been involved in several coups in Africa against... One of them, let's see, one of them was a telephone call was intercepted by intelligence and it was a coup in West Africa and the communications coming back to the States were coming through his office in the United States and the State Department got very angry with him Because he's used an unguarded telephone line, and he betrayed the identity of the CIA head of station.

01:45:39.000 Yeah, the whole thing is very, very intelligence-led.

01:46:30.000 And I found all these memos and letters and things and I've used them in the book and I reproduced them in the book and I used them in the film.

01:46:42.000 All the geology reports say it's as good as anything in South Africa.
