00:02:02.200 bit about these days and do our thing all righty then egor scullergrimson's day of remembrance
00:02:12.920 again is December 9th. He was born in 904 and passed away in 995. Of course common era.
00:02:23.800 Egr Skalgrimson born 904 common era was an Icelandic warrior, poet, farmer, and runemaster.
00:02:33.560 His parents were Skalgrimr, Kverdulfsson, and Bæra Ingvar's daughter. Skalgrimr was
00:02:42.240 a renowned and respected chieftain back in Norway, but migrated to Iceland with his wife
00:02:50.160 and four children, so that he could be free from the influence of King Harald Fairhair.
00:02:56.480 Eger's childhood was an extraordinary one. He composed his first poem at the age of three
00:03:05.140 and took revenge on another boy for cheating in a game at the age of seven. His skills
00:03:11.460 as both Eskald and Berserker showed early on in life, and would be carried with him
00:03:18.220 for the rest of his days.
00:03:22.180 Here I am at the hearth of my host Ingvar, the generous who grants gold to heroic men,
00:03:31.620 three-handed fosterer, you'll find no three-year babe among bards more brilliant than me.
00:03:40.260 was also a master of the runes. His most famous tale of rune magic involves healing a deathly
00:03:48.300 sick woman. A local landowner had attempted to cast a love spell with runes carved into
00:03:55.480 a bone which was placed under her pillow, but had mistakenly cast a spell of illness
00:04:03.140 on the woman instead. Egil burned the illness runes and carved a healing spell instead.
00:04:11.960 The woman's recovery was swift. Upon healing the sick woman, he recited a poem and famously
00:04:21.420 said, Runes none should grave ever who knows not to read them. Later in life, Egil killed
00:04:28.420 Later in life, Egil killed the retainer of King Erik Bloodaxe and Queen Gunnhildr, starting
00:04:36.780 a blood feud that would last for the rest of their lives.
00:04:41.080 Queen Gunnhildr sent her two brothers to take vengeance on Egil, but they were quickly sent
00:04:46.100 to join their ancestors in Hell's Hall.
00:04:50.100 Once Erik Bloodaxe became king of Norway soon after, he declared Egil an outlaw and sent
00:04:56.440 the company of men after him.
00:04:59.340 They too were killed in their attempt to subdue the war poets.
00:05:04.340 Before finally leaving Norway, Egil killed King Erik's son, Röngenveldr, and placed
00:05:12.220 the horse's head on a nithingpor, saying, Here I set up a nithpor, and declare this
00:05:20.060 neith against King Erich and Queen Gunnhildr. I declare this neith at the land spirits there,
00:05:28.460 and the land itself, so that all will fare astray, not to hold nor find their places, 0.90
00:05:37.620 not until they wreck King Erichl and Gunnhildr from the land."
00:05:44.160 Egil and Gunnhildr found themselves ruling the kingdom of Northumbria in England.
00:05:50.400 Egil soon found himself shipwrecked in their new realm.
00:05:54.680 Egil went to the home of his friend Erlenbjörn, who advised him to offer his head to King
00:06:00.780 Egil in hopes that he would spare his life.
00:06:04.240 Erlenbjörn made a case for Egil, while Egil himself composed a short poem for the king.
00:06:11.640 King Gunnhildr were not swayed by this, and told Ergil that his offenses against them
00:06:17.660 were too great to be forgiven.
00:06:20.460 His execution was ordered to take place the following morning.
00:06:25.640 Over what was supposed to be his last night on the side of the Vale, Ergil composed a
00:06:30.880 twenty stanza poem in honor of King Erik.
00:06:35.220 When morning came, Egil recited the poem for the king, who was so impressed that he let
00:06:42.320 Egil live.
00:06:44.980 After fighting for the Saxon king Atlastan, the famous Battle of Brunanbur, Egil was
00:06:52.820 rewarded two chests of silver for his service and returned to his farm in Iceland.
00:06:59.780 He remained prominent in local politics as he had truly become a legend amongst his folk.
00:07:06.500 He lived to the age of 90 and passed beyond the Vale just before Iceland began converting
00:07:12.440 to Christianity.
00:07:14.820 He was survived by five children, all of which he had with his wife, Asgirtha, Björn's daughter.
00:07:24.240 What can we learn from this story?
00:07:27.360 Egor represents the true duality of human nature.
00:07:31.840 Egor's saga is one of war and one of love. 0.55
00:07:37.080 We watch the pagan chief battle his way across all of Northern Europe, and we watch him immortalize
00:07:43.080 his love of his friends and family through masterful poems.
00:07:48.400 His loyalty to those who were important to him was tantamount to the man he became.
00:07:54.960 Egil Skullergrimson lived a legendary life of adventure and poetry, of love and war.
00:08:02.940 His might and skill as a warrior helped win the most famous battle in Anglo-Saxon history,
00:08:09.460 and his prowess in poetry was the height of a long tradition of Nordic verse.
00:08:17.400 His legacy has lasted over one thousand years, and it will last thousands more.
00:08:25.080 Hail Egil Skalgrimson!
00:08:31.340 Ladies and gentlemen, that brings us to the Yuletide season.
00:08:37.240 Again it falls the 20th through the 31st of December, and we are going to observe it
00:08:44.980 this year, it follows on the 21st.
00:08:50.860 Yuletide is the 12-day period in December in which we hold our biggest celebrations.
00:08:57.160 During the Yuletide, we celebrate our families and our tribes and the bonds that hold us
00:09:04.020 strong.
00:09:05.760 We celebrate our ancestors.
00:09:08.580 We celebrate our gods and the wild hunts.
00:09:12.160 We celebrate the bright fires of the hearth that keeps us warm, and we celebrate the rebirth
00:09:19.220 of the sun.
00:09:21.400 We have made it halfway through the harshest time of the year.
00:09:25.560 The sun begins to stay in the sky a little longer each day, moving us closer and closer
00:09:32.420 to the fruitful and warm summer.
00:09:36.920 celebrate by gathering together to feast and sing songs we put up our yule trees and our wreaths
00:09:45.080 we bake cookies and give presents we build strong bonds and traditions that our children remember
00:09:52.520 and pass on is a joyous time of the year we begin the yule tide on the 20th december called
00:10:00.920 Mother's Night. During Mother's Night we celebrate our ancient mothers, the Desir,
00:10:07.720 who kept the hearth flames burning bright. One way to celebrate this is to extinguish 1.00
00:10:14.520 all of the lights in the house. Light a candle to represent the hearth flame,
00:10:20.280 and if you have children, give them pots and pans. Starting at the central part of your home,
00:10:27.000 or the hearth usually the kitchen and the stove but can be a literal hearth if you have the
00:10:32.760 fireplace let the children chase the ill whites or the bad energy from each room by running through
00:10:42.040 the house and banging the pots and pans as you go through each room light awaiting candle
00:10:48.920 You are bringing the light of the hearth, of the goddess Frigga, of the Desir, into
00:10:56.880 each room to bless it.
00:10:58.960 You can say something simple with each candle you light, like, the goddess Frigga bring
00:11:05.200 love and light into this room, or the Desir bless this home and all who live within it.
00:11:13.680 Hilltide ends on December 31st, a time when people can make oaths for themselves for the
00:11:19.720 coming year.
00:11:21.340 An AFTA tradition, started by our esteemed founder Stephen McNallan, focuses on celebrating
00:11:28.380 12 Asatru virtues, industriousness, justice, courage, generosity, hospitality, moderation,
00:11:40.280 Community, individuality, truth, steadfastness, loyalty, and wisdom.
00:11:48.520 Each night we light a candle in honor of each of these virtues.
