00:00:00.000 Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and folk of all ages,
00:00:27.000 you know what time it is it is july and we're pushing things this month because we have a
00:00:36.060 third honored day and it's coming up real quick so let's not beat around the bush and let's get
00:00:45.400 right down to it as i alluded to we have a third special day this month started last year first
00:00:54.600 honored in 2023. We have a Day of Remembrance on July 4th for Sveinbjorn Bientensen. And
00:01:05.500 we follow that up on July 9th with a Day of Remembrance for Alexander Rudd Mills. And
00:01:14.300 on July 20th, we have Sigur Blot. Well, everybody, let's get down to it and learn a little bit 0.75
00:01:23.580 about the days of remembrance holy days holidays special days and just all around good times of
00:01:32.780 our folk all right so july 4th 2024 is going to be the day of remembrance for spain bjorn bientensen
00:01:43.340 Sveinbjorn Bientensen was born July 4th, 1924, and lived as a sheep farmer in Börgefjörður,
00:01:53.340 a fjord in the west of Iceland. Sveinbjorn was an early practitioner and leader of modern
00:02:02.340 Asatru. Sveinbjorn and fellow Asatruar founded the Asatruir Feregith Asatru Fellowship. On
00:02:11.340 first day of summer in 1972, April 18, and Sveinbjorn was named Ausherjargothi. Ausherjargothi
00:02:22.220 Sveinbjorn then led the push for the Asitru Fellowship to be recognized by the Icelandic
00:02:27.980 government. When Ausherjargothi Sveinbjorn collected the appropriate paperwork from the
00:02:33.420 minister of the Icelandic Ministry of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs, he received vague
00:02:40.540 answers from the minister, who did not take him seriously. When Asheria Gauthi's fame
00:02:45.960 building was exiting the ministry building, a thunderbolt caused a major power outage
00:02:51.560 in Reykjavik, which left the ministry building and the minister in the dark.
00:02:57.580 Hail Thor! After submitting the required paper arc, Asheria Gauthi's fame building still 0.72
00:03:04.820 faced opposition. The strongest opposition came from the bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
00:03:12.000 of Iceland, the head of the state of the Church of Iceland. The bishop took the position that the
00:03:18.940 polytheistic religious organizations founded in Iceland would therefore not be protected by the
00:03:25.340 Icelandic constitution. The bishop also criticized Osiragotis-Fengjord and the Austrofellowship
00:03:32.300 for not naming a head of the religion, for not having a set-written doctrine, and for not having a house of worship.
00:03:41.120 There were also critics in Iceland who agreed with the bishop that polytheism was illegal in Iceland,
00:03:47.220 and that Christ is enough, though he was not enough for Hitler, Stalin, or their followers.
00:03:54.360 However, Osheri Götze Sveinbjörn's arguments prevailed,
00:03:58.220 And in May of 1973, the Ossetru Fellowship was recognized as a church by the government,
00:04:05.460 and with this was given legal standing to perform weddings, was given a share in church
00:04:11.700 taxes.
00:04:12.700 In August of the same year, Asheri Gothi Sveinbjörn wed the first legal public Ossetru Blot
00:04:21.640 Since the year 1000, only all thing had forbidden blood, it declared Iceland a Christian nation.
00:04:29.420 Asherlyagöthi Sveinbjörn went on to lead the Asker Fellowship for 20 more years,
00:04:36.140 until he returned to his ancestors during Yuletide of 1993.
00:04:41.280 Sveinbjörn was also a published poet of several books of Riemann, Icelandic crimes.
00:04:46.960 He had recorded verses of his own and of the poetic Edahavomor, Verlusbau, and Sigtrufomor.
00:04:56.280 In its early days, the Ossetru Fellowship was notably folkish and took ethical positions consistent with Ossetru.
00:05:05.920 For example, in 1975, the Ossetru Fellowship opposed abortion on the basis that the movement to legalize abortion
00:05:13.380 is traced to international movements opposed to the Nordic nations, and in particular to the Nordic race.
00:05:22.340 The Asatru Fellowship has unfortunately failed to maintain the ideals of Asatru
00:05:27.380 that the Asatru Folk Assembly continues to promote today.
00:05:31.820 But Asatru Götis Fendriorn Bintesen of Asatruar Ferdigith
00:05:36.520 remains a hero of our folk who heard the call of the Isir at a time when very few did.
00:05:43.380 Not too long after, on July 9th, we hold a day of remembrance for Alexander Rud Mills.
00:05:59.380 Alexander Rud Mills was born in 4th Tasmania and lived from 1885 to 1964.
00:06:06.380 He was the guiding light for the foundations of Ossetru in Australia.
00:06:11.380 In 1933, Red Mills began writing books about our faith, and in 1936, he founded the Anglican
00:06:20.380 Church of Odin.
00:06:23.040 Mills was able to build a solid Ossetru community, but during the troubling times of the Second
00:06:28.240 World War, Red Mills was bitterly persecuted by his government, and the community that
00:06:33.720 he built was suppressed.
00:06:35.540 With no evidence against him of illegal activity, Alexander Rudmills was imprisoned.
00:06:40.820 It was nearly a decade before Mills was released, and despite all of his efforts, he was unable
00:06:47.060 to revive his church to its former glory.
00:06:50.820 All was not lost, however.
00:06:53.420 Alexander Rudmills' many publications and his passion lived on and inspired a new generation.
00:07:00.160 In the 1970s, a group of Odinist students at the University of Melbourne campaigned
00:07:06.540 to have Odinism recognized as a formal religion in Australia, hoping to be able to protect
00:07:11.900 the faith from the same persecution that Mills suffered.
00:07:15.360 It took almost two decades, but by the early 90s, Odinism was granted a religious status
00:07:22.200 in Australia.
00:07:24.480 Alexander Rudmill's vision also notably inspired Elsie Christensen, who was the leading voice of Asatru in North America.
00:07:34.780 So, what can we learn from this story?
00:07:38.580 Alexander Rudmill didn't live to see the culmination of all of his hard work.
00:07:43.560 When he died, Odinism and Asatru were still a repressed faith in his homeland.
00:07:48.980 Even without reward and recognition, he worked until his death to try and revive the ancient
00:07:57.260 folklore. And he did succeed. Could he have ever imagined how far-reaching his influence
00:08:04.200 would have been while he lived? Despite being imprisoned and persecuted first beliefs, Alexander
00:08:11.980 continued. Even without knowing that his hard work would bear fruit, he continued. He didn't
00:08:19.840 give up in the face of a thankless and dauntless task. He didn't let his ego of his own self-importance
00:08:27.260 stop him from doing what he believed he needed to do. There were no rewards. There were no praises.
00:08:35.680 There was nothing in it for him except the knowledge and the belief that he was doing the
00:08:41.400 right thing for his fault. Take from this story the need to remember that the bigger picture,
00:08:48.760 even when we can't see it, is so much more important than just ourselves. We do what
00:08:55.280 we are doing for our children and for their children, so that when we are gone they have
00:09:01.040 a foundation strong enough to hold them up and help them build better and stronger. Alexander
00:09:08.740 Rudd Mills is the dedicated hero of Thorshaw. For more information and a deeper dive into
00:09:15.780 the life and acts of this Australian hero, check out thorshaw.com. We're going to take
00:09:23.480 a brief pause and use thorshaw.com as a nice reminder. All of our Hof districts have their
00:09:32.220 own dedicated websites Odenshoff.org, Thorshoff.com, Baldershoff, and Jortshoff.org each. We also
00:09:41.180 have Asatruacademy.org and our main website Runestone.org. Make sure to check that one
00:09:48.840 out if you haven't recently. There's going to be lots of links in the description. I've
00:09:54.380 put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears over the last couple months and we just recently
00:09:59.460 a few weeks ago released a brand new runestone.org it's got a complete overhaul all kinds of new
00:10:08.820 pretties and a great great calendar combines all of the events from every district you can see them
00:10:16.520 all at once it's it's stinking amazing there's some Saturdays where there's 15 20 events going
00:10:25.920 on our Midgard. Man. Well, go check out our websites, and when you get back here to the
00:10:33.980 video, we're going to learn a little bit about Sigurblot. And that's it, July 20th, Sigurblot.
00:10:43.380 Sigurblot literally means victoryblot, and was celebrated by our ancestors in the early
00:10:49.260 summer months. On the one hand, our ancestors were celebrating their victory over the harsh
00:10:55.760 winter. Life had won. On the other hand, our ancestors performed blood to ask for victory.
00:11:04.060 With the warm weather and the completion of planting time, the men often turned their
00:11:08.780 minds to the duty of man. War. Practically speaking, summer was the better time to organize
00:11:16.480 new campaigns and to set sail. In our modern times, the vast majority of us are not familiar
00:11:23.000 with war in a personal way. We do, however, all have our struggles. Sigurblot is a time
00:11:29.140 to refocus. It is the time we can use to reorganize our priorities, to figure out the steps we
00:11:36.020 need to take in order to reach our ultimate goals, and to break free from those that we
00:11:41.140 struggle with. One great way to celebrate Sigurblot is to offer a meal or some other
00:11:47.960 items that you spent time making 0.51
00:11:50.180 in thanks for the victory of life.
00:11:53.000 Another option is
00:11:53.980 to sacrifice a bladed weapon to the fire.
00:11:56.900 A nice knife, for example.
00:11:59.080 A blade doled in
00:12:00.080 battle so that it cannot be used against you.
00:12:02.960 This is symbolic,
00:12:04.140 of course. Offered to the
00:12:06.000 fire is a great way to ask our gods
00:12:08.300 for victory during the summer of winter.
00:12:11.820 A gift
00:12:12.340 for a gift.
00:12:16.140 You know what? 0.97
00:12:17.080 I've got another way you can celebrate Sigurblot.
00:12:20.920 Come on out to Sigurheim, July 19th through the 21st.
00:12:26.200 You're going to have a great time right here in the heart of Tennessee.
00:12:30.320 Second annual Sigurblot.
00:12:33.080 If you haven't been here, it's something amazing.
00:12:36.980 It's going to be hot.
00:12:38.800 There's not a whole lot in the way of utilities.
00:12:41.740 We've got port-a-potties, plenty of water, and a lot of land to camp on.
00:12:45.980 but Matt's going to be here
00:12:47.800 and we're going to have a great time
00:12:51.600 walk on up to the ridge
00:12:53.380 future home of Tirsoff
00:12:55.660 hold a great
00:12:57.560 Victory Blot
00:12:59.040 and
00:13:00.860 get to know your folk
00:13:02.580 coming out to Sigurblot
00:13:04.900 Sigurheim
00:13:05.800 I'll see you there
00:13:07.340 and that
00:13:09.300 those are the days
00:13:11.420 of remembrance
00:13:13.040 holy days, high days
00:13:15.640 holidays of our people
00:13:17.800 for the month of July
00:13:18.860 thank you so much everybody
00:13:21.600 for listening in
00:13:22.500 I'll talk to you next month
