00:00:00.000 ladies and gentlemen boys and girls and folk of all ages you know what time it
00:00:29.320 It is the beginning of the month, and it is time to go over our holidays, holy days, and days of remembrance for our folk.
00:00:40.480 Alrighty then.
00:00:42.760 In Asatru, we celebrate two very special days this month.
00:00:48.420 The first, on the 9th as normal, our Day of Remembrance.
00:00:54.480 And this month it is for Queen Sigrid of Sweden.
00:00:59.320 And then we follow that up on November 11th for our holiday, the Feast of the Angeljar.
00:01:09.320 Now it's, what do we say, we recognize it, we observe it on the 16th, the third Saturday of the month.
00:01:20.240 But coming up even sooner than that, and it'll be here right before we know it,
00:01:25.080 is our very special national event, the Feast of the Ahriar in South Dakota,
00:01:31.200 hosted by our very own gothy Nathan Erlinson and his wonderful fiancé, folkbuilder Ashley McStacker.
00:01:40.220 We have that coming up on the 8th through the 10th.
00:01:43.940 That's this weekend.
00:01:45.680 It is not too late to get your tickets now.
00:01:48.460 I'll leave a link in the description, of course.
00:01:53.700 Alrighty, so now let's go into the details behind our Day of Remembrance and our holiday.
00:02:02.780 We start with the Day of Remembrance for Queen Sigrid of Sweden.
00:02:09.840 Also known as Sigrid the Haughty,
00:02:13.600 She was a proud and noble Alcetru woman who knew her worth and kept true to her loyalty to the Aesir.
00:02:22.800 She had the honor of marrying the powerful King Erik the Victorious of Sweden, earning her the title of Queen of Sweden.
00:02:31.700 With this marriage, she became the most powerful woman in all of Sweden, even acting as regent after King Erik's untimely death.
00:02:40.560 She was described by Snorri Sturluson as the wisest of women and prophetic about many things.
00:02:50.820 Because of her great reputation and wealth as a dowager queen,
00:02:55.960 she was highly sought after by many nobles throughout Scandinavia.
00:03:00.780 One of these was her foster brother, Harold,
00:03:03.940 who decided to visit her on his way to raid in the Baltic Sea region.
00:03:07.700 After they shared the feast, Harald became sullen and embarrassed when Queen Sigurður
00:03:14.200 mentioned that her power in Sweden was comparable to his in Norway.
00:03:20.080 After ruminating on this for some time, Harald decided to officially propose marriage to
00:03:25.520 Queen Sigurður, as a marriage between the two would give him power over most of Scandinavia.
00:03:33.420 He rejected this offer, as he was already married to a woman named Asta.
00:03:39.180 However, Harold insisted that this did not matter, as he believed Asta was not worthy
00:03:46.660 of a man of his station.
00:03:49.540 Queen Sigurdr stuck to her guns, riding away to her castle.
00:03:55.420 Harold followed her home with a retinue of soldiers, and they arrived to find another
00:04:00.740 Visevalder of Garthathrici. Queen Sigurther housed them in the same quarters, fed them 0.94
00:04:10.740 large amounts of drink, and then ordered her men to burn down the quarters and kill any 0.98
00:04:16.740 survivors. This was meant to send a message to all of the petty kings in the area who 0.93
00:04:23.740 Maria, who would seek to marry her for the wrong reasons.
00:04:29.340 Queen Sigathur was later being wooed by Olaf Tryggvason of Norway, a familiar figure to
00:04:35.660 many of our heroes, and the same Olaf who had forcibly converted his own folk in the
00:04:41.820 name of a Christ by means of threat, torture, and murder, but she eventually agreed to marry
00:04:49.300 him.
00:04:50.300 To celebrate this, Olaf sent her a gold ring that he had won in some conquest.
00:04:57.900 But Queen Sigrðr's goldsmiths discovered that it was only gold-plated, making Queen Sigrðr distrust Olaf.
00:05:06.920 When he later arrived in Sweden, he informed her that she must abandon the Isir and convert to the foreign faith of Christianity in order for the marriage to be fulfilled.
00:05:18.360 She immediately rejected this offer to betray our gods, saying,
00:05:25.700 I shall not abandon the faith that I have previously held, as have my kinsmen before me.
00:05:33.240 I shall also make no objections to your believing in whatever god you like.
00:05:39.680 As expected, this enraged Olaf, and he first insulted her age and beauty,
00:05:45.880 then struck her across the face with a glove.
00:05:50.460 Queen Sigurður reacted as calmly as possible
00:05:53.180 and told him that his actions may very well cost him his life.
00:05:59.360 She already had reputations that were being prophetic, 0.89
00:06:03.580 and sure enough, Orof the Christian was later killed 0.94
00:06:07.520 by a united front of both Christian and Ossetruf Scandinavians
00:06:12.060 at the Battle of Svold in September of the year 1000.
00:06:18.440 Queen Sigurður is an example to all of our folk
00:06:21.980 for her unwavering loyalty to the Isir, her folk, and her noble ancestors.
00:06:30.420 She is especially an example to the noble women of the folk
00:06:34.760 as she remains steadfast and undaunted in her faith and personal convictions.
00:06:42.060 She refused to marry any man who was not worthy of her station,
00:06:48.340 as well as any man who would force her to abandon her long-standing troth with the Isil.
00:06:55.360 May all of our people stand with our gods,
00:06:59.580 and may we all reclaim and retain our nobility no matter what lies ahead of us.
00:07:07.540 Hail, Queen Sigurdsir of Sweden!
00:07:09.980 Helsin.
00:07:13.740 And that brings us to the holiday, the holy day of the Feast of the Ahriyar.
00:07:20.420 Now, I know those days and all that's a bit confusing, so let's recap that again.
00:07:25.160 Technically, the holiday falls on the 11th of this month, of November.
00:07:30.340 And that's to line it with Veterans Day, as celebrated here in the United States.
00:07:35.060 but we observe it on the third saturday just because that's generally when most people have
00:07:42.120 free time to get together and that falls on the 16th and then our national events is being held
00:07:49.860 on the 8th through the 10th so it's all right about the same time but it could be a little bit
00:07:55.860 daunting and confusing so let me know if you need anything any help that way all right so what is
00:08:02.680 What is the Feast of the Einherjar? One of the most recognizable motifs in Ausatru is
00:08:08.560 that of the Viking warrior. Helm, sword, beard and blood, boys and girls have long been
00:08:16.280 mesmerized by the stories of Valkyries and the eternal feasting and fighting of the Einherjar
00:08:24.120 in Olden's Hall, Valhalla. Pop culture has taken the Berserker and the Valkyrie and
00:08:31.180 remade them hundreds of times.
00:08:35.140 Our ancestors lived in a different time, when fighting wars and general viking was necessary
00:08:42.660 for survival.
00:08:44.660 For a warrior to die in battle was the greatest honor.
00:08:48.300 Today, war is not necessary in the same way.
00:08:53.080 Most people scoff at war, urge their children to do better or be better.
00:08:59.460 For those of us who practice Ausatru, however, we recognize the importance and the value
00:09:04.740 of the warrior.
00:09:07.240 More important still is the importance than the value of those who have fallen, the Einherjar.
00:09:16.020 Once a year, we set aside a day specifically to honor the Einherjar.
00:09:21.260 We raise a horn to the fallen warriors to thank them for fighting for our people and
00:09:26.140 our freedom. 0.99
00:09:28.480 One way to celebrate is to set a place at the table for the Ein Heer. 0.97
00:09:33.860 Serve them the same food you are eating for dinner, pour them a glass of wine or beer, 0.89
00:09:40.300 and when you are done, leave the plate outside under a special tree and offering.
00:09:47.140 Another way to celebrate would be to visit the graves of veterans at a local cemetery
00:09:52.580 and clean them up.
00:09:54.500 Leave some decorations or a small flag.
00:09:58.340 You don't have to have any veterans in your immediate family.
00:10:02.560 It is a guarantee that somewhere down your ancestral lines, you have family who fought
00:10:08.480 in a war, and just as likely that some of them didn't return from the front lines.
00:10:15.580 It is in your blood.
00:10:17.940 So raise that horn and raise it high.
00:10:21.460 Remember our fallen. 1.00
00:10:23.580 Hail the Einherjar! 1.00
00:10:26.400 Hail Oden!
00:10:30.040 Thank you so much everybody. We come to the end of another month's review.
00:10:35.260 I'll see you again next month. And in the meantime, if you can make it out to South Dakota,
00:10:40.460 it's not too late to join us for the Feast of the Einherjar.
00:10:44.900 This is gonna be a great time.
00:10:47.580 Anyways, everyone...
00:10:49.580 Hail the Aesir, hail the Folk, hail the AFA, hail Queen Sigurds, hail the Angeljar, and
00:11:01.760 hail Victory!
00:11:04.380 See ya later everyone.
00:11:19.580 Thank you.
