00:00:28.600 you know what time it is it is time for the holidays holy days and days of
00:00:36.100 remembrance for our folk and October 2024 we start today October 1st is the
00:00:48.040 day of remembrance for John Gibbs Bailey October 9th we have the day of
00:00:54.280 remembrance for Meister Guido von List. We help celebrate the birthday of
00:01:00.760 Father MacNellan on October 15th and on October 19th is winter nights. Well we
00:01:10.560 got a lot to go over today for holidays let's get down to it and as I said on
00:01:21.760 On October 1st is the Day of Remembrance for John Gibbs Bailey, born May 22nd, 1913, and passed away on January 1st, 2003.
00:01:36.120 John Gibbs Bailey, better known as Hoskold, was a very private man.
00:01:41.980 There are no known photographs of him, and even those in the highest positions within
00:01:48.520 the Odinic Rite knew very little about his personal life.
00:01:53.580 His birth date as well as the date of his death are not commonly known.
00:01:59.020 Despite this lack of information, the legacy of Hoskord is one that continues to impact
00:02:04.960 Asatrar today.
00:02:08.100 While we do not have much information about his life, it is commonly known that Gibbs
00:02:13.500 Bailey had an interest in organized Osatru since at least the 1930s.
00:02:20.500 Throughout the years, Gibbs Bailey realized that in order to truly organize Osatruar,
00:02:26.600 he would need a strong foundation and doctrine.
00:02:31.360 Gibbs Bailey met John Yorl in the late 1950s, and in 1973, they founded the Committee for
00:02:39.940 the Restoration of the Odinic Rites.
00:02:43.120 During the early years of the Odinist Committee, Gibbs Bailey held a more public role.
00:02:50.380 He began to use the name Hoskald, one he had adopted from the name of Hoskald Dalla Corson,
00:02:57.040 an Icelandic Góthi who lived in the 10th century Common Era.
00:03:01.360 It was also during this time that many of Hoskold's ideas on doctrine were recorded,
00:03:09.700 the most notable examples of this being the Nine Noble Virtues.
00:03:14.400 Although Hoskold had been working on the Nine Noble Virtues for many years by this point,
00:03:19.120 it was not until his partnership with Stubba that they took on their current formats.
00:03:25.760 Prior to this, there were only eight virtues, and they were not in the same order used today.
00:03:31.360 In the late 1970s, it was decided amongst the two founders that Stubba would begin to take
00:03:38.680 on a more public-facing role and Hoskold would step back from the spotlight.
00:03:45.120 In the 1980s, after Stubba renamed the organization The Odinic Rite, Hoskold was named the first
00:03:52.680 treasurer.
00:03:54.800 Not much else is known about the life and deeds of Hoskold after this point.
00:04:00.660 Despite the lack of biographical information, we can still learn from the life of Hoskord.
00:04:07.200 The very virtues by which we live our lives as Asatruar were first compiled by Hoskord
00:04:13.520 and form a foundation for all those of our faith.
00:04:18.220 On October 1st, 2023, the AFA marked the first official celebration of a day of remembrance
00:04:25.200 for John Gibbs Bailey, known as Hoskord.
00:04:29.140 Herr Hoskord.
00:04:33.140 Alrighty, we follow that up on October 9th for the Day of Remembrance for Meister Guido von List.
00:04:42.140 Born October 5th, 1848. Passed away May 17th, 1919.
00:04:51.140 Born in 1848 in Vienna, Guido Carl Anton List was the son of a prosperous middle-class family
00:05:01.300 who traded and worked in the leather goods industry.
00:05:06.040 Raised a Roman Catholic, List found his love of mythology and history early in life,
00:05:13.100 often acknowledging that his beliefs in the Isil and Odin in particular
00:05:18.660 developed during those younger years.
00:05:23.180 A scholar, painter, and writer,
00:05:26.320 his big ambition was to live his life doing the things he loved.
00:05:30.740 His father, however, pressured him strongly into taking over the family business.
00:05:36.940 In his spare time, he continued to write and paint.
00:05:41.160 He also took part in several leisure sports clubs such as rowing and mountaineering.
00:05:46.120 During one of his many trips, Liszt purportedly left his group to spend a solitary summer atop Gieselberg Fort.
00:05:57.360 Here it is said he reaffirmed his belief in Odin.
00:06:02.600 Upon the death of his father in 1877, Liszt abandoned his family business in favor of pursuing his riding passion.
00:06:10.100 Despite being an avid believer in Odin, he married his second wife in a Protestant ceremony
00:06:18.740 in 1899.
00:06:21.280 This didn't hamper his writings or his influence, however, and by 1902 when his writings took
00:06:27.300 on a different direction, it was a prolific and well-known voice in the nationalist and
00:06:32.560 Volkish movements. It was in 1902 that von List had his great epiphany. After a cataract
00:06:41.200 surgery left him blind for 11 months, List was left with much time for reflection and
00:06:47.520 meditation. During this time, he discovered the Arminen runes. He called this set of runes
00:06:55.200 the proto-language of the Aryan race. It was through these runes that von List's occult
00:07:01.720 ideas and writings evolved. The popularity of his ideas exploded amongst the wealthy
00:07:07.820 middle class of Austria and Germany at the time, and the Guido von Gesellschaft was born.
00:07:15.820 Von List society further evolved, and on the mid-summer of 1911, the inner group called
00:07:23.620 the High Armist Order was created. While the main group focused on his occult and political
00:07:30.760 ideologies. The inner group was dedicated to the worship of Olden through his writings
00:07:36.300 and sacred pilgrimages. With food shortages after the war, and old age creeping up on
00:07:43.880 him, von West's health deteriorated. In May of 1919, he passed away at the age of 71.
00:07:53.320 His body was cremated and buried in an urn in the Vienna Central Cemetery, Central Friedshof.
00:08:02.440 Among his many novels, plays, and political manuscripts, it was his first dedicated occult
00:08:08.700 manuscript, Das Geheimnis der Runen, or The Secret of the Runes, that really set Squid
00:08:18.600 Dovan Westup as a forefather of modern Asatru, influencing many including the Asatru hero
00:08:26.580 Alexander Rudd Mills.
00:08:31.380 We can never anticipate when the spark of inspiration will lead to the flame of an idea.
00:08:37.800 It's easy to look at that inspiration and say that it isn't real, or it's just imagination
00:08:43.160 going crazy.
00:08:45.280 With faith, however, our limitations can be cast off. 0.96
00:08:49.840 Have faith in the Isil.
00:08:52.260 Have faith in our ancestors and our folk soul.
00:08:56.260 Have faith in yourself.
00:08:58.840 Each one of us can accomplish great things if we work hard enough and maintain our faith.
00:09:06.240 Guido von List is the dedicated hero of Oldensof.
00:09:11.040 For more information and a deeper dive into the life and acts of Meister Von List, check
00:09:16.440 out Odenshof.org.
00:09:18.720 Hail Meister Guido Von List!
00:09:23.640 Hail Oden!
00:09:27.660 On October 15th, I don't know if we would call it a holiday, and we certainly yet wouldn't
00:09:35.280 call it a day of remembrance but it is definitely a day of honor the birthday
00:09:42.960 of our founder Stephen McNallan anyone who has raised a horn in honor of our
00:09:52.960 ancestral gods has done so because of or in spite of Stephen McNallan as Harry
00:10:03.180 Yothee, Matt Frivel, Ostara in the South, March 2020.
00:10:10.580 This month we celebrate the birth of our founder, Stephen McNallan.
00:10:15.900 Before he became the father of modern Osatru, before he started a religious movement on his own,
00:10:23.700 before the Kennewick Man, he was born in a small rural town in Texas in 1948.
00:10:30.400 On a more intimate level, I chose my parents well.
00:10:38.360 My father was a hard-working Irish Catholic oil hand who had come to Texas for the oil
00:10:44.560 boom some years earlier, and my mother was a loving, kind, and intelligent woman who
00:10:51.780 significantly bought me the books I wanted and read them to me.
00:10:56.360 Founder MacNallan developed an interest in pre-Christian religion in college after reading
00:11:03.980 the book The Viking by Edison Marshall.
00:11:08.340 In 1968 or 69, he dedicated himself to the worship of the gods of Europe.
00:11:17.240 In 1969-70, he founded the first Ossetru church in the New World, the Viking Brotherhood,
00:11:26.080 which gained tax-exempt status in 1972.
00:11:30.840 He began writing and distributing the Rune Stone, which was hand-typed and copied on
00:11:36.260 a mimeograph machine.
00:11:39.800 At first it was a private thing, but then I began quietly promoting the religion, which
00:11:46.680 at that point I simply called Norse Paganism, as I had no name for it.
00:11:53.160 I really was starting from scratch.
00:11:56.520 About the time of my graduation from college, I started a miniscule publication called The
00:12:02.380 Runestone.
00:12:04.220 I cranked it out on a mimeograph machine.
00:12:07.940 The first run was 11 copies.
00:12:11.580 Within a year or so, August 29, 1972, I had received recognition of the Viking Brotherhood
00:12:19.600 as a tax-exempt religious organization.
00:12:25.060 After reading Magnus Magnusson's book, Hammer of the North, or first heard the word Osatru,
00:12:33.640 Founder MacNallan began to use and promote his religious ideal as Osatru rather than
00:12:38.540 Odinism.
00:12:41.820 At some point during his time in the U.S. Army, Founder MacNallan began to adopt the
00:12:46.980 belief that Ossetru was a religion of the peoples of Europe rather than being a religion
00:12:52.820 for all, thus adopting folkism.
00:12:57.320 In 1976, after being discharged from the army, he renamed the Viking Brotherhood to the Ossetru
00:13:04.420 Free Assembly.
00:13:06.560 In 1987, Steve dissolved the Free Assembly.
00:13:11.940 After seeing what American Ossetru had developed into, which denied the Ossetru was a uniquely 0.91
00:13:18.440 ethnic faith, Mr. McNallan stepped back into the Ossetru scene, establishing the Ossetru
00:13:26.080 Folk Assembly, the emphasis on folk to differentiate from the universalist lie that threatened
00:13:33.700 to take hold of our ancestral faith.
00:13:38.260 It flourished over the years it grew.
00:13:42.120 I wrote to Ossetru a native European spirituality, which defines my convictions and purpose.
00:13:49.640 We purchased a permanent building which became Oldenhof, our first temple to the gods.
00:13:56.880 The AFA has since expanded to include four Hofs in the USA and continues to grow.
00:14:04.020 In 2016, after leading the Ostrow Folk Assembly for 20 years, I turned it over to a younger
00:14:10.520 generation and started the next phase of my service to my gods and my folk.
00:14:17.860 In the years since Mr. McNallan retired, he has remained an active participant in Odenshof
00:14:24.400 with charitable giving and contributing in any way possible.
00:14:28.200 It is often said that we stand on the shoulders of giants, and none are more giant than that of our founder, the first Asheriogothi.
00:14:39.140 Thank you, and happy birthday, Mr. McNown, from all of us in the Asatru Folk Assembly.
00:14:48.980 And our final special day for the month is the holiday of Winter Nights, which falls on October 19th of 2024.
00:14:58.200 Autumn has officially started. The days are noticeably shorter. The nights are noticeably cooler. The trees are ablaze with the colors of fall, and the crunching of the fallen leaves underfoot has begun.
00:15:14.520 All around us the world is dying.
00:15:19.340 This was a time of drawing in close, of hearth and home and family.
00:15:26.560 For our ancestors this was not an autumn festival, but a quiet winter rite in which the female
00:15:34.660 spirits were honored in a rite called the Sierblot. 0.68
00:15:41.060 Today winter nights is often seen as the death of the physical world, the world we can see,
00:15:48.140 and the reawakening of the intangible.
00:15:51.700 It is the world of high energy, of spirits, it is that deeper feeling and connection to
00:15:57.840 the things we know to be there.
00:16:00.940 This is the time we honor our Desir, our female ancestors.
00:16:06.440 remember that without our ancient mothers we could not be. They care for the home and
00:16:12.560 the hearth fires. They care for their families. Our ancient mothers with strength and determination
00:16:21.220 raise the next generation against odds we cannot really begin to fathom. With the harvests
00:16:27.940 finished, there is a quiet lull before we turn our minds to the hectic holiday season.
00:16:34.940 Now is a good time to turn inwards in introspection and self-improvements.
00:16:40.280 It is also the time to meditate on things of a more spiritual nature.
00:16:46.700 Connect to the energy that is always there.
00:16:51.760 Well, thank you so much everybody for another month.
00:16:57.700 We'll return again in November.
00:17:01.520 But until then, hail the gods, hail the folk, hail Haskold, hail Meister Guido von List,
00:17:15.280 hail Founder McNallan, hail the Mothers, and hail the AFA.
00:17:23.900 Good night everybody, be well.
00:17:31.520 Thank you.
