00:00:00.000 Hi, my friends. Welcome to Storytime with Gidea Sheila McNallan. That is me. I am one of the
00:00:29.720 teachers with our Alsatru Academy and I have some very special children's books
00:00:36.380 that I'll be sharing with you. One I've chosen for today is especially for today
00:00:41.180 because today is Halloween and this is a Halloween story. In the story in the
00:00:47.180 book it is called Hallowed Evening because that is what Halloween is. It's
00:00:51.920 shortened to Halloween but it is a remarkable story about enchanted
00:00:59.300 forest and what might happen if you would go into the forest tonight. It is
00:01:05.060 called Child of Fairy, Child of Earth by Jane Yolen, and the pictures are by Jane
00:01:16.700 Dyer. The little girl in the story carries a lantern, but if you look at
00:01:28.880 this picture you can see her there in the back wearing her orange and red outfit right up in
00:01:36.080 the tree look closely there's somebody watching and he's wearing green he was a child of fairy folk
00:01:47.760 a child of sky and air and she was a child of humankind of earth and toil and care they met
00:01:55.840 on the dusk of Hallow's Eve, when widows grieve and widows weave, they met in the dark of Hallow's
00:02:03.200 Eve, she had flowers in her hair. And again, take a look now. She's collecting flowers.
00:02:19.040 There he is in the next page.
00:02:25.840 he says to her and where do you go oh child of earth oh why do you wander here are you not afraid
00:02:34.480 of the fairy race whose castles are so near she says mana says there's no such thing as fairy wing
00:02:45.280 and elven's ring she says there's never been such a thing and i should have no fear
00:02:55.840 He took her by her dirt soiled hands and led her to his hall.
00:03:13.260 He showed her brownies and boggles and sprites and elven folk and all.
00:03:19.660 She ate the grass, she drank the dew, the fairy brew of rainbow hue.
00:03:25.840 She danced all night with the elven crew
00:03:29.220 and didn't sleep at all. 0.82
00:03:31.720 Again, look at that.
00:03:37.600 Looks like fun.
00:03:49.700 And he says to her,
00:03:52.380 Oh, stay with me, dear human child.
00:03:54.980 become a child of night.
00:03:57.000 We'll dance between the hollow hills,
00:03:59.520 be decked in candlelight.
00:04:01.640 And ever after Halloween, clothed all in green,
00:04:05.640 my fairy queen, you'll be the loveliest ever seen,
00:04:09.940 the elven court's delight.
00:04:13.700 So he is imagining that if she could stay,
00:04:17.220 she could live there and be the queen of the fairies.
00:04:20.300 It looks very nice, but this is right and that.
00:04:37.460 And she says, she looked around the fairy hall beneath the hollow hill and all the glamour
00:04:43.980 around her spun to bend her to his will. But with a sigh, she shook her head. That's not my bread
00:04:53.920 and drink, she said. I cannot on your food be fed, and still my needs fulfill.
00:05:13.980 But since I've danced with you this night, this day you dance with me.
00:05:25.080 She took him by his grass green sleeve and led him o'er the lea.
00:05:30.220 She led him down the farmyard road, past meadows mowed and gardens hoed.
00:05:36.460 She led him o'er the human road and full of awe was he.
00:05:43.100 never seen such things. He was a creature of night. And there they are.
00:06:01.020 They stroke the cat, they milk the cow, they fed each chick and hen. He marveled
00:06:07.600 at the sounds and smells of barn and yarn, yard and pen. He drank cold milk and ate brown bread.
00:06:16.880 He made a bed. He cleaned a shed. He followed everywhere she led and round about again.
00:06:26.000 Again, there they are. He's standing behind feeding the chickens.
00:06:32.320 There aren't chickens where he lives.
00:06:37.600 Long day, it looks like it's sunset.
00:06:44.600 Oh, stay with me, dear fairy child, and live here on the land. 0.67
00:06:50.600 We'll till the soil, we'll plow the field, we'll harvest hand in hand. 1.00
00:06:56.600 The night is fair, but day is best, so be my guest, forget the rest.
00:07:02.600 and on and on her suit she pressed with strong and sure demand hmm what's gonna
00:07:13.040 happen next
00:07:15.760 He looked around the human world, a world of gold and brown, a world where farmyard turns
00:07:34.300 to village, village into town, a world of colors pure and bright, of open sight, of
00:07:42.000 warm sunlight unlike the shadowed world of night of moon and thistle down remember
00:07:51.900 what his home is like that's where he lives he thought about the fairy hills
00:08:08.500 the fairy queens and kings he thought about the cold cold stars that shone on
00:08:16.740 fairy wings I miss my own I cannot stay you work I play I must away I'll keep
00:08:27.260 the night and you the day, he stretched translucent wings.
00:08:47.140 Oh wait, oh wait, she cried to him, at least a gift I'll give, reminding you that
00:08:54.620 here above is where a friend does live and through the daylight world again
00:09:00.740 plus past denizen of farm and pen she tracked past horse and cow and hen to
00:09:09.360 find a gift to give hmm there she is wonder what you'll find that's pretty simple
00:09:24.620 At last she found a fresh hen's egg, a gift from humankind, so he'd remember earth and
00:09:36.620 toil when he'd left both behind.
00:09:40.000 Then in return he touched the shell, and with a spell of fare thee well, extracted from
00:09:47.740 that fragile shell. A feather to remind. What did he do? He took a feather out of the egg without
00:09:59.040 breaking it. And here it is. Here's the feather. I give you this that comes from that, the fairy
00:10:16.720 child replied that egg and feather both shall serve as token and as guide that
00:10:24.280 we may both go arm-in-arm and fear no harm nor take alarm when visiting in
00:10:31.060 in a hall or a farm or other lands besides and there he is with his feather for her
00:10:45.940 ah here we go time has passed they're grown up the gifts exchanged they each went back
00:10:56.660 to homes they loved full well but now and then they visited helped by a fairy spell
00:11:04.340 and through the years and though the years flew quickly past they were friends fast
00:11:10.740 from first to last which left all skeptics flabbergasted at how they did so well
00:11:20.340 look at them now
00:11:26.660 So in this last picture, there's another fairy child. 0.96
00:11:42.480 So if one lucky Hallows Eve you hear the night birds sing and see a child of fairy guise with
00:11:50.260 bright and gauzy wing, a flutter in a moonlit glade, and all arrayed in silver shade. Be
00:11:59.220 bold, be brave, be unafraid, and join that fairy ring.
00:12:06.260 Wow. I wonder if you'd do that. Tonight if you're out walking around, if you go into
00:12:14.020 the woods, do you think you'd find any fairies there? Well, we believe in the land, Vaiteer. 1.00
00:12:20.100 all know that we have land spirits at our land and it could be that one looks like a fairy maybe a
00:12:26.020 fairy boy or fairy girl but what's special about this is that when they left they exchanged a gift
00:12:35.220 we call that gabo the rune is gabo we look like this it's a gift for a gift he gave she gave him
00:12:43.780 the egg he gave her the feather from the egg and that was bound their friendship
00:12:49.540 forever until they grew very old together and stayed friends could they
00:12:54.100 live together no no he was a child of night she was a child of day the very
00:13:00.540 world the human world and right now Halloween is when the veil is thin and
00:13:06.860 things can happen like that as it shows in this story it's also a time for us to
00:13:11.740 connect with our mothers and our grandmothers and all those ancestors who've gone on because
00:13:18.200 the veil is thin for them too. Maybe tonight, new dream, you will get somebody that you
00:13:23.460 don't really quite know who will whisper in your ear or touch you and make you feel very
00:13:28.160 loved because those are our ancestors and they're always with us. I'm going to have
00:13:33.240 more stories for you soon. I hope you enjoyed this. This is especially my Halloween story,
00:13:38.760 but I like it any time of year it's a feel-good story and it's a beautiful
00:13:43.120 poem there are lots of good words in here for you to learn so maybe your
00:13:47.640 parents can go can get a copy of the book and read it with you and you'll

00:14:02.460 enroll you in it we'd love to see you it is a home school for our children here
