00:03:35.400 New York Times wrote about a left-wing social media star named Josh Green who used his platform

00:03:39.620 to push dozens of progressive contenders. With so many followers, he's had access to major

00:03:46.080 politicians like Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Mayor Zoran Mamdani of New York.

00:03:51.260 But what the Times says he doesn't always reveal is that he's been paid for his support from at least seven politicians or outside groups supporting them.

00:04:01.600 Green told the Times he doesn't see a problem with the cash, arguing he accepts money only from candidates and campaigns that he would support anyway.

00:04:10.820 At the same time, in New York City, influencers are being used not to promote a campaign but public policy.

00:04:16.280 The Times also reports Mayor Mamdani's team is using encrypted apps to send influencers memos on the mayor's priorities.

00:34:57.400 But your angle on this is very different. That's why I wanted to show this today

00:35:04.200 and make sure everybody sees it. Your angle. Tell me, what was it? And I disagree with Paul

00:35:08.980 on a lot of topics, particularly on economics, you know, neoliberal versus populist

00:35:13.360 nationalists, but he's one of the smartest guys in the country. What drew

00:35:17.260 Paul Gijo to this topic? What was it about Afghanistan?

00:35:22.220 And particularly, because I tell people, this is not simply

00:35:25.360 about Afghanistan. It's not a historical thing of what happened.

00:35:29.020 It's much deeper than that. And it talks about issues today and issues we're going to

00:35:33.280 face in the future with our warriors in the field.

00:35:37.540 Michael Pack? I think for Paul, he says this in the film. It's hard for me to speak for somebody

00:35:43.860 else, but he does say this in the film. He really feels, look, the disastrous withdrawal from

00:35:49.480 Afghanistan, you know, doomed the Biden administration. I mean, that was a disaster.

00:35:54.280 They never recovered. And as Paul said, it sent a signal around the world that America was weak,

00:36:01.180 feckless, couldn't run a military operation. And all of our enemies, you know, in China and Iran

00:36:06.820 in russia and gaza they were all emboldened by it and i think paul feels that strongly you know

00:37:02.000 very important to get realistic footage to bring people into feeling what people felt like

00:37:08.500 especially at Kabul airport at the end of the film so we come up with the idea and then it's

00:37:15.280 a challenge to get people to agree to be interviewed in this film in particular we deal

00:37:20.380 as you know with moral injury with people who really suffered horribly I'm sure we'll get to

00:37:25.920 talk about that later and so to get them to share their stories you have to really build up trust

00:37:30.700 with them. You can't just say, you know, show up and shoot them. Talk to them for a while. You have 0.53

00:37:35.240 to, you know, credibly be willing to tell their story in a fair way. And even for people we

00:37:43.240 disagree, we try to do that. And I think we want to give their side. And I think most people have,

00:37:50.540 you know, always felt that we have done that. So it's a big process getting the interviews.

00:37:55.940 It's a big process getting the archival together.

00:37:59.080 And then there are discoveries you make along the way.

00:38:01.580 I mean, I did know when I started this film that the two huge focuses, which maybe we

00:38:07.460 will talk about later, are the zero units clearing the airport and this moral injury

00:38:11.480 question.

00:38:12.460 I never even heard the term moral injury before I started the film.

00:38:16.160 As you know, and maybe some of your listeners do, but I didn't know, moral injury is when

00:38:21.480 you're involved in something that runs against your moral code, your values. So it's not PTSD

00:38:27.360 where you see horrible things that happen in war that you expect to happen in war. You know,

00:38:31.360 your buddies get shot, you're shooting people. This is when you do something that you think is

00:38:36.620 wrong or you witness something that you think is wrong and do nothing. And that is what we forced

00:38:42.600 a lot of the young Marines at the gates at Kabul airport, HK airport to do and deal with.

00:38:49.020 so i really want to call attention to them i really don't think they get the attention and

00:38:54.440 support they deserve and that really came to us in the course of making the film i didn't really

00:38:59.440 know about it ahead of time why should moral injury it's not ptsd that's totally different

00:39:07.400 right that's combat fatigue or shell shock or whatever moral injury the first question you get

00:39:13.020 well gosh they're in the american military of course our values are at the forefront of this

00:39:18.100 There's no chance that you'll have moral injury. PTSD can understand, particularly given the situations in like Abbey Gate and these other things, other endeavors or other situations, particularly young Marines and young infantry are put in kids in their teens.

00:39:35.720 Right. Right out of high school. But when you say moral injury, a lot of the audience go say, well, hey, Michael, it's the United States of America and it's the Marine Corps.

00:39:43.700 How could you possibly go against the values of the United States of America and the Marine Corps as an active-duty Marine in a combat zone, sir?

00:39:52.900 That is right.

00:39:54.180 You're right.

00:39:55.180 It's a very important distinction.

00:39:57.080 PTSD.

00:39:57.820 Every war, people will be experiencing PTSD.

00:40:00.460 It's unavoidable.

00:40:01.880 Moral injury is not something our Marines or any of our service members should experience.

00:40:06.800 I mean, the classic example in our film is by the time that, you know, mid to late August, people are outside all the gates trying to push their way into the airport.

00:40:17.960 Marines are at the gate and they have to decide who to let in.

00:40:21.300 So the State Department says in the beginning, you can only let in people who have U.S. passports or special immigrant visas and not their families.

00:40:30.720 So the family comes in.

00:40:32.560 You have to tell the wives and children you're going to take them to the exit gate.

00:40:36.800 And who's on the other side of the exit gate? The Taliban were providing security for us outside of

00:40:42.840 the gates. So they watched them come out of the exit gates and who knows what happens to them.

00:40:47.560 So here are young Marines taking women and children out probably to be killed or at least

00:40:51.800 something horrible. The next day, the State Department says, oh yeah, families can come.

00:40:56.480 So they're thinking, I took people out to be killed who didn't need to be killed. Wait a day

00:41:01.400 and they'd be saved. So they're haunted the rest of their lives by causing the death of women and

00:41:07.600 children that didn't need to be caused. So it's not, and these are young women, the ones at the

00:41:14.440 gates, the corporals and enlisted people at the gates, they're 18, 19, 20-year-old people, they're

00:41:20.060 young men mainly, and women, young men and women, and they join the Marine Corps because they want

00:41:25.980 to help and save people, and especially women and children. So they're really haunted by this

00:41:30.860 forever. You know, it haunts their dreams, their nightmares, you know, and it's really a spiritual

00:41:36.420 crisis as much as a psychological crisis. And they don't get the help that they should from

00:41:41.880 the military because if you've been wounded in battle, the military thinks, oh, well, you're a

00:41:47.100 hero or, you know, we celebrate you. But the military does not want to celebrate people who've

00:41:53.020 taken women and children out to exit gates to be killed by the Taliban, nor do they want to remind

00:41:58.120 the american people that such things happen because as you say they should not happen in

00:42:02.260 the marine corps or any american service so that's how it happens and if you watch the film you can

00:42:08.400 see it unfold in real time it's horrible i mean you know i do not blame these young marines but

00:42:15.340 i understand why they're having trouble living with what they did we got about a minute before

00:42:22.020 we go to break or play the trailer on the other side of the break uh was the confusion because

00:42:27.900 the top of the chain of command didn't understand the details? Were they not getting the right

00:42:33.240 details from the middle level of command? How did you continue to have this back and forth of

00:42:37.760 changing things of which the instruments of the execution of it just happened to be the young,

00:42:43.920 virtually teenager, young people in their 20s, Marines? How did that happen?

00:42:48.780 Well, they're stuck dealing with the accumulated errors of their bosses across the U.S. government.

00:42:55.880 The film tells the story from Joe Biden's decision to go to zero, hence the path to zero, in April of 2021, early in his administration.

00:43:03.940 And you see one mistake after another finally leading to this chaos at HKIA Airport.

00:43:10.300 It was totally preventable.

00:43:11.860 But one decision after another, the decision to leave Baghdad, the decision not to support the Afghan military forces, leaving weapons behind.

00:43:21.900 the way, way, way delay in announcing an evacuation. So in the end, it's chaos. In the

00:43:28.240 end, they finally announced an evacuation August 15th. They have to complete the evacuation August

00:43:34.060 31st. They evacuated 124,000 people. There's no way to do that without chaos. And the State

00:43:40.860 Department has to, you know, they had a lot of fantasies about what would happen later. And

00:43:45.220 those conflicting fantasies, those successive fantasies led to conflicting information.
