00:04:06.640 He called it a raid and he was immediately scolded by Mika and he didn't push back at

00:05:21.500 So listen, CPI came out at 8.5%, an absolutely blistering pace.
00:05:26.240 And to put that in context, if we were to take out the last four months of just absolutely
00:05:30.760 scorching hot CPI, today's print is the worst print since 1982.
00:05:36.760 So let's not hold any parades because we've gone from 9.1 to 8.5.
00:05:42.860 We are still in the stratosphere as far as price increases.
00:05:46.700 And despite that, by the way, and I want to point this out because CNN just put this headline
00:05:50.580 up on their official Twitter account.
00:05:52.980 They said U.S. inflation took a breather in July thanks to the falling cost of food and
00:05:58.120 gas.
00:05:58.960 The falling cost of food and gas.
00:06:01.040 Now, OK, food and gas prices are not falling.
00:06:03.520 The rate of stratospheric increase might have taken a slight breather, but they are not
00:06:09.020 falling.
00:06:09.880 OK, that is the reality right now.
00:06:11.400 And to prove that, let's go to a chart.
00:06:13.260 If we can go to chart number one, you know, Cortez always shows up for charts.
00:06:16.300 Even if I am your second pick for the night, Steve, I show up well armed and ready to educate
00:06:21.140 the audience and inform them so that they can make their own decisions.
00:06:24.240 And by the way, I think most people know this in their own lives because they pay their bills
00:06:27.560 and they see what's happening in their checking account.
00:06:29.700 But listen, let's look at actual inflation rates.
00:06:31.780 So this is updated as of this morning for some very key items, the first three of which
00:06:37.340 are half two items and really all of them to some extent are half two items, but goods
00:06:41.140 and services.
00:06:41.880 These are year over year rate increases.
00:06:45.200 And tell me if CNN, these are prices falling.
00:06:49.660 Gasoline, 44 percent year over year.
00:06:52.520 Utilities, 30 percent.
00:06:54.720 Groceries, 13 percent.
00:06:56.820 That's food at home, not fine dining out.
00:06:59.060 Health insurance.
00:06:59.880 The Democratic Party is supposedly the party that can deliver affordable health care to
00:07:04.840 individuals.
00:07:05.540 Health insurance, 20 percent year over year.
00:07:08.460 And airline fares, 27 percent increase.
00:07:12.840 So 8.5 percent is the overall number.
00:07:15.900 But the number for some really key goods and services is, of course, far, far worse.
00:07:20.740 And I think it's important for us to continually track that half two basket of groceries, gasoline,
00:07:26.140 and utilities right now, those three together, rising at 29 percent year over year.
00:07:32.100 That is the reality that Americans face.
00:07:34.700 So a small downtick in the rate of acceleration is not falling prices, Steve.
00:07:41.500 So in other words, think of it this way.
00:07:43.000 If a plane is crashing, OK, if it is crashing down to Earth and it's able to slightly slow
00:07:48.100 its speed of descent, the plane is still crashing.
00:07:51.200 OK, the plane has not righted itself and started to ascend back upward towards safety.
00:07:55.940 OK, that's, I think, an analogy to what's happening right now.
00:07:58.700 So the rate of descent slow or excuse me, the rate of price increases slowed very, very
00:08:04.260 slightly.
00:08:04.800 But by historical comparison, still in absolutely staggering, punishing, recession inducing levels.
00:08:12.740 That is the reality right now.
00:08:14.080 And Americans know this again.
00:08:15.500 They're facing this every day.
00:08:16.760 The corporate media is going to try to throw metaphorical parades all day today.

00:08:35.600 Is the fed going to go dove on us quickly?
00:08:37.700 Are they talking about a 50 basis point in September now instead of 75 basis points?

00:08:44.980 Of course, the Wall Street crooks are out there skipping around wanting you to buy the dip.

00:09:12.920 Again, that data from a lineable of survey of over thirty five hundred small businesses in the United States.
00:09:18.680 They self-report that one third of them, 34 percent, said they could not pay rent in the month of July.
00:09:24.180 So tell them, by the way, that they're getting a break and that things are fine.
00:09:28.300 When one third of small businesses can't pay rent in the month of July, they need help.
00:09:31.920 Part of that help is the Federal Reserve finally doing its job.
00:09:35.860 And the Fed has put itself through its dereliction of duty.
00:09:38.300 It's put itself in a very difficult position.
00:09:40.240 OK, and so, I mean, I do have a tiny bit of empathy for the Fed.
00:09:44.020 But they, again, put themselves in this place where they must play the bad guy.
00:09:48.320 But to answer your question, look, the markets this morning, which is where I really look rather than just economists and pundits.
00:09:54.700 Let's look at what markets are actually pricing in regarding Fed policy.
00:09:57.720 It flipped from a for sure thing of 75 basis points in the next meeting to now roughly a 50-50 bet, whether it's going to be 50 basis points or 75.
00:10:07.040 But, you know, I don't want to get lost in the weeds.
00:10:09.200 The point is the Fed is nowhere near where it needs to be.
00:10:12.860 Rates need to be at least double at the short end where they are right now.
00:10:17.340 And by the way, speaking of the stock market, you know, you talked about how the stock market is celebrating this morning because they think they're going to get an easier Fed.
00:10:22.820 And again, that may happen.
00:10:24.280 But consumer-facing stocks continue to suffer incredibly.
00:10:28.600 If we can pull up chart two here, I think this is very telling because any company that is – no, that's the inflation rate.

00:10:38.140 Any company that faces the consumer, any sector right now, is having a terrible time.
00:10:43.300 And this is the salad chain sweet green.
00:10:45.520 And again, as always, I'm not trying to pick on this company.

00:10:49.380 But it massively disappointed in earnings.
00:10:51.720 Unfortunately, they're going to be laying off a whole lot of people.
00:10:55.180 And that is the chart of sweet green year to date.
00:10:58.560 And even though the broader stock market is advancing today, sweet green right now, as we speak, is down 2.5%.
00:11:05.460 And as you can see on that chart, it is massively off of its highs of earlier this year.

00:11:10.760 Because their input costs for food have absolutely soared.
00:11:14.200 And because their consumer – it's a relatively expensive restaurant for a quick service place – their consumers are increasingly strapped.
00:11:20.660 And by the way, that's not just a sweet green story.
00:11:23.760 Now, that is a niche company that, again, serves in general a higher-end clientele.
00:11:28.120 But we also got news this week from Tyson Foods, one of the biggest meat packaging companies in America.
00:11:33.680 And they reported – and their stock has been hammered on this news – Tyson Foods said that consumers are increasingly trading down.
00:11:40.060 They are buying cheaper and cheaper cuts of meat.
00:11:42.600 So we see it on the macro level at the lower end of the price scale.
00:11:46.060 We also see it on the micro level from a niche company like Sweet Green.
00:11:49.640 The reality is the consumer is in a ton of trouble in this country.
00:11:54.020 It is getting worse, not better.
00:11:56.340 And a slight downtick in the rate of acceleration is no reason for anyone to celebrate or for anyone to assume that things are going to be fine.
00:12:06.320 And to that point, if I can actually show them that third chart that they just had up, CPI, going back one year.

00:12:14.200 You can see if you look there for the folks who are watching, in April, there was a slight downtick as well.
