00:39:13.040 What is your major professional accomplishments in this area?

00:39:18.180 Well, after medical school, I went and got a Ph.D. in mathematical modeling of infectious epidemics, and I published a paper on that.

00:39:26.240 And then I worked for a long time as a classical field epidemiologist doing case control studies, investigating the etiology of a few different kinds of cancers, studying drugs and viruses and bacteria and things like that related to cancer.

00:39:42.040 And then when COVID hit, I was asked to be part of a panel to help the state of Connecticut reopen.

00:39:48.960 And that panel came up with a few recommendations.

00:39:51.600 My job was to look at early outpatient treatment, which I did for hydroxychloroquine, and I published that in May of 2020.

00:39:59.160 It got a lot of media attention, and I got, you know, became all things COVID all the time as far as my career.

00:40:08.300 And you were at, before you retired, you were at Yale School of Public Health, the public health school there?

00:40:16.480 Yes, and in fact, even though I'm emeritus, I can hardly tell.

00:40:19.760 nobody seems to tell, even me, still spending all my time doing and responding to emails and

00:40:25.740 academic matters. And I know you're too humble to say this, but that would be one of the most

00:40:31.060 prestigious institutions in public health in the world, correct? I think we do a very good job in

00:40:37.080 the epitome public health that we do on average, although, you know, I have my disagreements about

00:40:41.600 what other people in my department think with regard to COVID and the vaccines. But I think

00:40:45.900 in general in public health, were very good. This morning, the FDA approved, I think, for

00:40:51.240 emergency use authorization that the bivalent booster is acceptable and can be given to

00:41:00.140 babies as young as six months old. Do you agree with that? No, I disagree with that. This was

00:41:06.500 the Moderna booster compared to the Pfizer booster that FDA had approved previously.

00:41:11.200 Neither one is warranted for general use in that population.

00:41:16.400 Remember, as I said yesterday in the symposium, that COVID mostly does its damage in people who have chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, chronic heart disease, chronic kidney disease, immunocompromised, history of cancer, things like that.

00:41:33.280 Those are the people who have more serious risks. Everybody else, regardless of age, but especially in the young ages, has very, very low risk of being seriously affected by COVID. And in those people, you really have to be very careful about the alternatives that you give them.

00:41:50.820 And that means that the vaccines, which we now know to cause serious adverse events in a non-negligible fraction of the people who take them, those risks have to be balanced by risk of COVID.
