Vanity Fair's Molly Jong-Fast joins me to talk about why polls are a waste of time, and why we should stop treating them as actual news events. Plus, we talk about the influence of Mike Johnson and his cult-like beliefs.

00:04:02.680Winning the popular vote is meaningless in this country.
00:04:04.920So then my question is how do we as journalists, how do we in the media use a poll then if you're telling me it's not a predictor of what's going to happen?
00:04:12.540And even unless it's kind of in our backyard, it may not actually have any significance in there.
00:04:18.240Well, so I think the way to think of it is there's a guy called Daniel Borenstein who wrote this book in 1962.
00:04:26.240He was sort of the first to sort of look at PR as a kind of public relations as almost a crisis.
00:04:33.040And he came up with this idea of pseudo events, right?
00:04:35.520So pseudo events are events that are created for news coverage, like a press conference.
00:04:42.180So you look at a poll like a press conference.
00:04:44.580So people don't take press conferences largely as breaking news, right?
00:04:49.260Congress has press conferences all the time.
00:04:55.120But they're data points where a politician has tried to show you what they want to show you.
00:05:01.840And that's what I think we should take polls as, right?
00:05:04.280There can be useful information in them, but they should not drive the news cycle.
00:05:09.420And one of the things that's really destructive is you see a lot of opinion pieces written off polls as a news peg.
00:05:16.500So, for example, when I was working on this piece, there were like three pieces on The Washington Post site that were written with polling as fact.
00:05:25.880So, for example, the border comes back to bite Democrats because it's based on a polling.
00:05:32.380So it's based on the supposition that the border is somehow a problem for Democrats because of a poll.
00:05:38.580And that in itself is not – it's just sort of an unnatural bit of news that may or may not be true.
00:06:01.900Young earthism says the theory of evolution is crazy and the earth is 6,000 years old and men walk with dinosaurs and God breathed life into man.
00:06:11.000And Adam came from – I don't know, Eve came from Adam's rib or something like that.
00:06:17.520I can't – it's too insane to even think of.
00:06:21.160We've done a little like geographic, cultural take on Louisiana and Mike Johnson's influences.
00:06:29.720Sometimes you look at a politician or you look at Kevin McCarthy and say, that guy's pliable.
00:06:35.980It's just like a bowl of jello or McConnell, he'll do anything he can to stay in power.
00:06:42.800When you look at these Christian nationalists and you look at Mike Johnson or you look at people I've talked about, Woody Jenkins, Tony Perkins, the influences in his life, you have to understand something.
00:07:43.440They're committed to this and they think they're right.
00:07:47.360And to take them as anything else is a giant mistake.
00:07:56.740And so that's the purpose of this lecture.
00:07:57.280This guy was formed into being what he is and he is an avowed anti-democratic theocrat.
00:08:07.400And if you want to know what they think, and they're all evangelicals, let me refer you to a document, I think it was from the 1870s, put out by the Catholic Church called the Syllabus of Errors, which might be the most profoundly stupid document in the last 200 years.
00:08:28.000And they believe what you will read in the Syllabus of Errors, they may not be papists, but they think democracy is a sign of weakness, they think that theocracy is the way we should go and we should be run-based people.
00:08:46.340And they're very upfront about it, and the biggest mistake that you can make is think that they're full of s**t, because they don't think they are.
00:08:56.760And they'll be nice to you, they'll smile, they'll be fellowship, but these are really, really fanatical people who want to get into every aspect of your frickin' life.
00:09:10.700Mike Johnson, he's from your home state of Louisiana, the Speaker of the House.
00:09:16.900I read today, he wrote a foreword in a book that conscribes to conspiracy theories and homophobic insults.
00:09:23.780I thought, Mike Johnson wrote the foreword to the Bible?
00:09:29.800Do you think Mike Johnson can hold his party together now that he has taken the mantle?
00:09:35.320First of all, I don't think he can hold his party together.
00:09:38.140Second of all, you're exactly right, Mike Johnson, and what he believes, is one of the greatest threats we have today to the United States.
00:10:10.100And people in the press have no idea who this guy is, how he was formed, what the threat is, and this is a fundamental threat to the United States.
00:10:21.960It is a fundamental, if they don't believe in the Constitution, they'll tell you that, Mike Johnson himself says, what is democracy but two wolves and a lamb having lunch?

00:10:34.220And to say, oh, come on, man, that's just some, no, no.
00:10:38.360They believe that, and they're coming, and they've been doing it forever.

00:13:36.020But then Carvel and Bill Maher, and I want you to embrace this, that Christian nationalism, that Christians, evangelical Christians and traditional Catholics, where they talked about the syllabus eras, which really was a throwdown against modernity back in the 19th century.
00:13:55.440A throwdown against Nietzsche and what they foresaw the 20th century was going to become with Hitler and Mussolini and Mao Zedong, Stalin, all of it.
00:14:05.400But that's to be mocked and ridiculed.
00:14:08.200And even more importantly, it is you're dangerous.
00:14:12.440In fact, James Carvel said you're more dangerous than Al-Qaeda.

00:22:41.740But what's on the other side of that border has been, as you say, a place in which all of today's foreign powers are enemies in many cases, but certainly foreign challengers have been operating with impunity.
00:23:03.060Benign neglect is the best one can be said to have done to it, but mostly we've just ignored it.
00:23:08.960And as a result, today, you have now, in most countries in this hemisphere, in fact, I believe it's not an exaggeration to say, from the Arctic in the north to the Antarctic in the south, every major country, with the exception now, I guess, of Argentina, is run by more or less Marxists.
00:23:33.660If not out-and-out Marxists, certainly Marxist-aligned folks, like, well, Joe Biden, for example.
00:23:40.680But the point is, whether it's the Chinese Communist Party.
00:23:44.020But hold on, hold on, you're saying, hey, hang on, you look at Canada, you've got Castro's son, illegitimate bastard son there, and that whole thing, the great Canadians, that thing's out of control, right?
00:24:16.640But Steve, just to introduce really where we are at the very moment is the Chinese Communists, the Russians, the Iranians, Hezbollah are now all over the hemisphere and are beavering away to establish not only a presence there.
00:24:37.380This Belt and Road Initiative is very evident in Brazil and in Peru and in other parts of the hemisphere where the Chinese are building, as they are everywhere else, infrastructure that will be used ultimately, count on it, for power projection by them.
00:24:59.080But building in place dual-use ports, dual-use rail systems, dual-use airports, dual-use road networks and mines and so on that the Chinese especially and their friends will be exploiting.

00:25:14.860The pattern that you touched on earlier and that we're all about at, among other places, our Committee on the Present Danger, China, and I'm so glad you've got a couple of our members coming up next, is that we're dealing with a strategic arsonist in Xi Jinping.

00:26:24.560The distinguished expert that I rely on most in Latin America, Joseph Humeyer, pointed out to me the other day that he's been tracking this increasing mobilization of Venezuelan military personnel to, it seems, go into Guyana to actually invade the place.
00:26:46.700And he said, interestingly enough, it began, that mobilization began right after Nicolas Maduro, the Venezuelan dictator, came back from, wait for it, Beijing.
00:26:58.100So the question is, and we did a fascinating, I mean, just absolutely gobsmackingly powerful webinar Thursday of this week about what is almost certainly the penultimate fire that Xi Jinping will set.
00:27:15.920And there may be North Korea in the meantime, there may be, oh, I don't know, the Serbs going into Kosovar, there may be the Turks going into Armenia.

00:40:33.820So what we're talking about when we're talking about seizing the land from Guiana is we're talking about what they call the Essequibo portion of Guiana, which amounts to two-thirds of the country.
00:40:46.040And as is the case all over the world with any countries that share a border, depending on what point you go back to in history, you're going to find all sorts of variations in the border.
00:40:57.300Not to mention that what are we talking about now?
00:41:00.060We're talking about boundaries that were inherited from European powers, right?
00:41:04.880Originally Venezuela, Spanish colony, and I think it was actually the Dutch that were occupying Guiana, and there's disputes over where the border should be.
00:41:14.360So it's been at least 100 years since an international tribunal came in and completely settled this alleged dispute between Venezuela and Guiana and laid down the border where it is now.
00:41:30.480So Maduro is going back to dredging up ancient boundaries from literally when the conquistadors were in South America as a pretext.
00:41:42.960And he's now submitting this question of whether the Essequibo region belongs to Venezuela to the Venezuelan people for a popular referendum.
00:42:11.560It's a pretext so that when he goes ahead and does what he fully intends to do, obviously, he will then claim that the Venezuelan people told him to do it and stand behind him.
