00:00:10.580 And it's just important to note that this was the U.S. Justice Department, part of the Biden administration, that convicted the son of the sitting president without interference from the White House or the president.
00:00:22.260 Merrick Garland, the attorney general, an independent attorney general who's often earned the ire of the White House for certain decisions that he's made, appointed a special counsel who had been a Donald Trump appointed U.S. attorney, David Weiss, in the state of Delaware to oversee this case.

00:00:41.080 They presented overwhelming evidence in this courthouse behind me that Hunter Biden was using drugs and illegally purchased a firearm during that time.
00:00:49.120 And Hunter Biden's stab at a defense, which was trying to raise reasonable doubt about some of that drug use, did not pass muster with this jury, which returned a verdict within three hours of deliberation, sooner than many people had thought.
00:01:02.800 There was some speculation, perhaps Hunter Biden's team was appealing to a hung jury, trying to find one juror who would be sympathetic to Hunter Biden.

00:01:13.620 They may have been sympathetic to him, but they clearly saw that the evidence was overwhelming in this case, that he violated the law and they didn't get to hear the context, which is that this is a charge that is rarely brought as a standalone case, as many legal experts have said.
00:01:28.300 And for that reason, it may be unlikely that he serves any jail time in this case, but it's an important piece of context because this case may never have happened had not a plea agreement that Hunter Biden had reached with the special counsel a year ago, had not that agreement collapsed, first in open court and then behind the scenes in plea negotiations that failed.
00:01:49.960 Because Hunter Biden's team was not satisfied with the level of immunity that they were offered by the Justice Department.
00:01:56.080 In retrospect, that seems like a questionable decision because now Hunter Biden stands convicted of felonies and he's facing another trial in September on tax charges on it.

00:04:06.920 And, you know, as we've been telling you, the maximum in this case, the practical maximum here is 10 years in prison.

00:04:30.800 But given that in the particular context here, that Hunter Biden has no criminal record,
00:04:35.820 that this charge is rarely brought as a standalone, the judge may well go below that.

00:04:42.540 But a lot of discretion in this case is given to this federal judge, a Donald Trump appointee,
