I'd like to talk to you tonight about a great lady.
00:00:03.360
And she was just that, a very great lady, and a celebrity, which is something else, of course.
00:00:09.280
A toast of society, and on top of that, she was a suffragette, a sort of great-grandmother of
00:00:14.220
woman's lib, and one of the finest singers in this country. Her name was Miss Julia Ward Howe.
00:00:21.480
Here she is, in the happy autumn of her brilliant life. Now, Miss Julia was born before photography
00:00:27.000
was invented, and though there were cameras by the time Miss Julia had grown up to be
00:00:31.160
beautiful, and she was, you know, very beautiful, if there is a photo made of her back in her
00:00:37.180
youthful days as a breaker of hearts, I haven't been able to find it. Never mind. After all
00:00:43.300
this time, we still remember her with so much affection. Because of some words she wrote
00:00:49.860
for a song, I don't think there's any argument that it's the greatest song ever to come out
00:00:54.160
of America, and hers are the greatest lyrics. The music started well ahead of the words.
00:01:00.220
It started in church, and then moved out into the battlefield. It began as a hymn, and grew
00:01:05.100
to be the most heart-quickening, marching song in all history. It's quite a story.
00:01:12.280
Before the Civil War, there was an old man named Brown, who tried to start a civil war all
00:01:18.560
on his own. An angry old man who reckoned it wasn't enough just to say that slavery was
00:01:24.620
wrong. Something had to be done about it. Slaves had to be set free. So he and his sons and a few other
00:01:32.240
people picked up their guns and tried to do just that. Didn't work, of course. Nobody was freed.
00:01:38.000
Old Mr. Brown was caught and tried for treason and hanged. He was either a martyred hero or a bloodthirsty
00:01:46.160
villain, depending on your viewpoint. It's an argument that's still going on.
00:01:52.100
You can dispose of me, he said, standing on the scaffold. You can dispose of me very easily.
00:01:59.300
This other matter has not been disposed of. This Negro question, I mean. The end of that is not yet.
00:02:14.200
Well, they buried him. Not so long afterwards, that crazy private battle of his broke out so publicly
00:02:21.580
that it all but broke our nation in two. It very nearly destroyed us. And early on in that
00:02:29.280
terrible civil war of ours, a few soldiers picked up that half-forgotten hymn tune and improvised some
00:02:34.380
words. And pretty soon, an army was marching to it. Maybe what old Brown had done in life was
00:02:39.380
unlawful, but the spirit moving him was freedom. A spirit in our land we like to think can never die.
00:02:47.200
That's the sense of what the soldiers were singing. John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave,
00:02:54.780
but his soul goes marching on, carried the whole Union army into battle.
00:03:04.480
Well, Miss Howe was the lady who made it the battle hymn of the Republic,
00:03:10.440
the whole Republic, her nation, as Miss Howe's great admirer, Mr. Lincoln, so greatly put it,
00:03:21.540
dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
00:03:28.660
Her song was for all of us to sing, and all of us to live by.
00:03:33.800
She'd had a sleepless night. This happened in Washington, the old Willard Hotel, and somehow,
00:03:41.400
just before dawn, those words all came to her all at once, as though some other hand had written them
00:03:46.780
and passed them on to her. So Miss Julia Howe got up out of her hotel bed and found, as she said later,
00:03:53.900
an old stub of a pen, and as daybreak lightened over a sleeping city,
00:03:58.780
sat down at the window, and got it all written out before the sun had reached the paper.
00:04:05.860
Those words of hers still help to bind and hold us.
00:05:26.740
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.
00:05:32.160
He is trampling of the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.
00:05:37.600
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword.
00:06:08.600
I have seen him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps.
00:06:14.600
They have builded him an altar in the evening dews and damps.
00:06:19.600
I have read his righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps.
00:06:53.600
I have read a fiery gospel written burnished rows of steel.
00:06:57.600
As ye deal with my condemner, so with you my grace shall deal.
00:07:01.600
Let the hero born of woman crush the serpent with his heel.
00:09:27.840
I know you try to do everything in the world to stop that
00:09:31.820
And where do people like that go to share the big lie?
00:09:38.420
I wish that any of these people had a conscience
00:09:41.480
Ask yourself, what is my task and what is my purpose?

up with a mic pillow body pillow they feel better they feel uh they feel calmer you see all the stuff
00:45:44.420
of the state department they got to have sessions and people are distraught hey the reason they're
00:45:49.540
distraught folks is that you became part of a movement and particularly coming around this show
00:45:55.440
where he gave you hard truths every day and i understand this show is not entertainment this
00:45:59.440
show is a lot of work we demand a lot of work out of you folks to keep up and you volunteered and
00:46:04.880
you made the difference was the precinct strategy taking over state parties volunteering to get at
00:46:10.620
the massive get out the vote the mass mobilization or becoming election integrity officials all of you
00:46:16.800
folks pitched in and it didn't take you writing checks what it took was commit your uh your your
00:46:22.940
spirit and your soul to this endeavor and you did what happened on the other side is they were lied
00:46:29.140
to constantly they were lied to by msnbc they were just lied to lied to lied to lied to they thought
00:46:33.580
they were going to win they had no earthy idea they thought we were the anti-democratic forces
00:46:38.080
they thought that we were the fascists the garbage all of it deplorables remember that there was no
00:46:42.920
chance the american people would stand up particularly people that are black and brown that african
00:46:48.180
american men working class men or hispanic men and women families would say no in one case maybe
00:46:54.380
not vote for kamala harris in the other hey just actively vote for trump they weren't prepared for
00:46:58.960
that why they were lied to for years and years and years that's the trauma they're getting over
00:47:03.040
we're going to do some different things in the show today i've got a clip this was a film
00:47:07.980
that was not particularly uh a huge hit because it is a problematic film but it's got some amazing
00:47:15.300
pieces in it i want to show what the kind of scale of what the settlers this is about jamestown
00:47:22.400
uh starring colin farrell the book the film the new world from i don't know 10 15 years ago like i said
00:47:29.480
it wasn't a huge hit but it's a very powerful film if you watch it particularly given the fact of uh of
00:47:35.600
the of the continent in which they came and how they had it was hard scrabble and a lot of these people
00:47:40.900
had been um what i say sons of the cavaliers they had been they were a fortune uh they were seeking gold
00:47:48.260
and uh and the fountain of youth they weren't really there to do farming types of things you
