00:03:58.120So what we can expect today is we can't expect to see members of the mainstream media pool back inside the White House across various components of the day, different things that are going on there.

00:04:21.280However, I am a firm believer in the fact that the last four days has left left a lasting impact.
00:04:28.960We've been able to go and shine a light on this situation and prove that that we are not beholden to the mainstream media.

We're going to go right to David in a moment. The pomp and circumstance, this is President Trump doing exactly what she did for him when the president went over earlier in the year.
00:49:20.900Yeah. It looks like, too, we're hearing there might be two more visits, actually. They were saying today that there's a chance.
00:49:45.620Let's go to David Lynch at the Washington Post, the author of what the world's worst bet, the best book on globalization ever written.
00:49:54.140David, you had a table setter this morning in The Washington Post about the state of the Chinese economy and how that really, I think, is a framing device for these meetings.
00:50:04.840Given what you just heard from the president and from Chairman Xi, how does that inform your thinking around your piece, sir?
00:50:14.420Yeah, well, thanks for having me, Steve.
00:50:16.520I think the economic climate back in China is a lot more complex than probably most people realize.
00:50:26.700I describe it as sort of a split-screen economy where the aspect of the Chinese economic performance that we see most clearly,
00:50:37.280which is this sort of unstoppable export juggernaut that's really gobbling up market share
00:50:44.600all over the world, Europe, developing countries, Southeast Asia, et cetera, really seems like a
00:50:52.600world beater, and it is. But the domestic environment back in China is another story
00:50:58.760altogether. And the domestic economy is quite weak. Retail sales down, wages down,
00:51:07.100or wage growth down anyway. Youth unemployment of 19%. And so you've got this dichotomy where
00:51:15.600you've got a very well-educated workforce. Loads and loads of young Chinese people go to college
00:51:20.680and they're graduating and the opportunities just aren't there for them the way that they
00:51:26.920have been in the past. And so that's something to keep an eye on. Now, I don't think Xi Jinping
00:51:33.300feels constrained by that at all. It's a cost to some degree that I think he's willing to bear.
00:51:40.860But it is certainly the background or the frame for this, as you say.
00:51:47.760Let me ask you, you know, he's made a very big deal in the five-year plans to pivot. I mean,
00:51:52.220they realized this was a problem, right? The first problem was to pull as many people out of
00:51:57.160abject poverty into, you know, working poverty and then many into the middle class to build the
00:52:02.940biggest middle class in world history as rapidly as possible. But they've known this issue with
00:52:08.700domestic demand and they took, they took dramatic steps to get around, you know, get ahead of this
00:52:15.800problem. Why has that failed? Because this has been one of his highest priorities in his time
00:52:22.380as head of the Chinese Communist Party and the head of state, sir. Yeah, well, you're right.
00:52:28.120The Chinese have been talking about the need to boost domestic consumption or consumer spending
00:52:33.100for going on 20 years. In 2007, the then Premier Wen Jiabao described the Chinese economy as
00:52:41.560unbalanced and unstable. And it was clear that they needed to move off this investment-heavy
00:52:47.840approach that's sort of the classic East Asian development model. We saw this in Korea,
00:52:54.640Taiwan, elsewhere. For a very poor country, obviously, folks can understand you need to go
00:53:01.660out and sort of build all the capacity that the developed world has, the roads, the bridges,
00:53:06.560the airports, the factories. And that kind of investment becomes the engine that drives
00:53:13.780everything forward. Well, eventually you reach a point where you've got all the airports and
00:53:18.760high-speed rail lines that you need, and you can't keep doing that. And you need to pivot and have
00:53:25.920your consumers over time become what lifts up overall growth. The problem now is they had this
00:53:34.980just gargantuan housing and property bubble, which burst five years ago. And unlike the US,
00:53:45.940which we've had our own problems back in 2008, but 70% of the typical Chinese household's wealth0.93
00:53:53.580was wrapped up in property. And so when that bubble burst, taking with it something like
00:53:59.940$10 trillion worth of wealth, understandably, that's left your average Chinese person or family
00:54:09.480reticent to spend. They feel like they've really taken it in the shorts in the property market,0.98
00:54:16.360and so they're not in the mood to go out and buy a new car or a new smartphone or some new clothes.
00:54:21.400And so that's what really explains the kind of almost stagnant state of the domestic scene there.
00:54:31.440You know, they've been a big recipient of a lot of the benefits of globalization, as you point out in your book.
00:54:38.020What does Xi need right now? These are very tough negotiators.
00:54:41.800Remember, we took two years under Lighthizer, Navarro, Bob Lighthizer to craft a deal that would take care of what we call the seven original sins of the Chinese economy.0.99
00:54:52.720In May of 2019, they tore it up and said, no, we're not going to do this.0.96
