00:00:00.200 Hello, Classic Crew, and welcome to another episode of The Scoop.
00:00:06.940 So, if you guys are new here, The Scoop is our chance to just have a little chat, catch up,
00:00:11.900 talk about what went on over the course of the week, and just hang out.
00:00:15.100 So, grab a cup of coffee, grab a cup of tea, I've got my little fall cup here, which I got at Dollar Tree,
00:00:20.640 and I'm really enjoying, and let's get into it.
00:00:23.040 So, the first thing I want to talk about today is the movie that just came out on Disney+, which is Mulan.
00:00:28.380 You guys probably grew up on the cartoon version of Mulan, just like I did, and I used to love that movie.
00:00:33.900 I just recently re-watched it, and I just remembered how good the animation is, and how good the music is,
00:00:39.220 and how hilarious Mushu is. I love him, and it's great.
00:00:43.920 But, of course, the new movie has had a lot of problems and a lot of controversy.
00:00:48.660 So, first of all, it was supposed to be a huge theatrical release.
00:00:52.820 Of course, that was pretty limited when coronavirus hit, so that was pushed off a few months.
00:00:57.620 And then Disney decided that they were going to release it on Disney+, but this was the first bit of controversy.
00:01:03.840 They were going to ask people to pay $30 in addition to their subscription fee that they pay for Disney+, anyways.
00:01:11.120 And people were not very happy about that.
00:01:13.360 I personally understood why they would do that.
00:01:15.520 If you're going to see a movie in theaters, and let's say it's two parents and a child,
00:01:19.440 you're probably going to be paying more than $30 just to get tickets for the three of you.
00:01:23.600 So, for them to charge $30 for, let's say, an entire family who's going to watch makes sense to me,
00:01:29.960 and I understand it.
00:01:31.400 Now, if you're not going to a theater, it's not the same experience, so some people probably didn't enjoy that.
00:01:36.780 But I do understand the concept.
00:01:38.800 It is a big-budget movie, and they wanted to make their money back.
00:01:42.540 So, I guess it makes sense, especially under the circumstance of COVID-19.
00:01:46.880 But the next reasons that the movie had some controversy, I think, are actually pretty warranted.
00:01:51.400 So, the star of the movie, the woman who plays Mulan, is named Liu Yifei.
00:01:56.380 And on a social media post, she came out and publicly supported the Hong Kong police
00:02:01.820 as they are cracking down on protesters who are fighting for democracy in Hong Kong.
00:02:07.640 So, a lot of people were wanting to boycott the film because the star of it
00:02:11.600 is being pro-communist totalitarian dictatorship.
00:02:15.780 And people didn't really want to support a film that has the character of Mulan
00:02:21.280 played by a woman who is publicly supporting the Hong Kong police.
00:02:24.880 Makes sense.
00:02:25.800 So, the conflict in Hong Kong is a little bit complicated to explain.
00:02:30.480 But essentially, what you need to know right now is that Hong Kong is a democracy,
00:02:35.960 and China wants to reabsorb it into its communist totalitarian dictatorship.
00:02:41.760 And the people of Hong Kong, who have lived under democracy, are now protesting
00:02:47.700 as Hong Kong police are cracking down on these protests, and a lot of scary stuff is happening there.
00:02:54.600 Now, during the pandemic, China was able to enact a national security law on Hong Kong,
00:03:00.240 and the Hong Kong police are basically just working for the Chinese government now.
00:03:03.380 So, the people in Hong Kong are being oppressed, and it's really, really scary.
00:03:08.520 So, for somebody to support the Hong Kong police during this is appalling.
00:03:13.880 And not only did the star of the film support Hong Kong police,
00:03:17.420 Disney itself had some issues in this area.
00:03:20.660 So, in the credits of Mulan, Disney specifically thanked the government of the Xinjiang province.
00:03:27.420 I apologize if I didn't get that exactly right in my pronunciation.
00:03:30.500 I did look it up, but I don't speak Chinese.
00:03:32.720 So, they specifically thanked the government entities of the Xinjiang province,
00:03:37.020 which is where they filmed parts of the movie.
00:03:39.160 They also thanked the public security bureau in the city of Turpan,
00:03:42.680 where there are more than a dozen re-education camps of Uyghurs.
00:03:46.520 And we all know what re-education camps are.
00:03:48.640 They are terrifying, terrifying places.
00:03:51.640 These re-education camps have been reported to have forced sterilization,
00:03:57.040 forced political indoctrination, and forced labor.
00:03:59.760 These are all horrible, horrible human rights abuses.
00:04:04.060 And Disney is thanking this region's government for allowing them to film there
00:04:09.180 while they are persecuting Uyghurs. 0.89
00:04:12.000 They are literally profiting off a slow-rolling genocide.
00:04:16.020 It's terrifying.
00:04:17.540 And I'm personally not interested in seeing Mulan anyways,
00:04:21.140 but even if I was interested in seeing it, I would not support this film.
00:04:25.300 And the fact that Disney is trying to make a profit off of an area of the world
00:04:29.360 where there is a genocide happening is disgusting.
00:04:33.100 The fact of the matter is, there are a ton of corporations in America
00:04:37.160 that have thrown the people of Hong Kong under the bus,
00:04:41.460 that are ignoring the genocide that the Chinese are committing against the Uyghurs in China.
00:04:48.160 And it's something that we as people really have to think about.
00:04:51.860 These are big problems.
00:04:54.120 Mulan as a movie is one small part of it for us to decide,
00:04:58.100 okay, we're not going to see it.
00:04:59.180 But there are a lot of other things to talk about here and think about.
00:05:01.880 And consequences that we have to consider giving as moral people.
00:05:05.940 I'd really love to hear your guys' thoughts in the comments on this.
00:05:08.780 The fact that Disney is openly supporting China 0.70
00:05:12.040 so that they can make a quick buck is awful.
00:05:16.120 And I'd love to hear your guys' thoughts on it too.
00:05:18.200 I'm really glad that we talked about that.
00:05:20.040 It's a really serious topic and it's something I did want to address.
00:05:23.660 And now we're going to be moving on to some more kind of light programming here.
00:05:28.800 And we'll just hop right into that.
00:05:30.840 So I wanted to talk about the fact that over Labor Day weekend,
00:05:34.720 I worked on my duvet cover.
00:05:37.480 Now this is a project I have been wanting to do for a really long time,
00:05:40.820 but I just hadn't made the time and I hadn't really sat down and done it.
00:05:45.220 And this weekend, I did it.
00:05:46.920 I'm so excited.
00:05:47.900 So who else has a comforter that slips and slides around in their duvet cover?
00:05:52.420 Because I do and it is the worst.
00:05:55.400 And I absolutely hate it.
00:05:56.920 And it makes me hate making my bed, which is so weird.
00:06:00.100 Because I love making my bed in the morning.
00:06:01.920 And when my comforter is a mess because of the duvet cover,
00:06:05.060 it makes me not want to do it.
00:06:07.000 So I looked up some tips and tricks online to see what I could do.
00:06:10.820 And I figured out that if I put buttons along the top of my comforter
00:06:14.540 and little buttonhole loops made of elastic on my duvet cover,
00:06:19.560 I could secure it.
00:06:21.080 So I did that along the top.
00:06:22.500 I did it along the bottom.
00:06:23.700 It has changed the game.
00:06:26.920 It's amazing.
00:06:27.880 I'm so excited about it.
00:06:29.740 Because now, our comforter really is in our duvet cover securely.
00:06:34.020 And I don't have to worry about it.
00:06:35.860 It's much more comfortable for us to sleep in.
00:06:38.360 And I think it is such a great life hack for you to just take a few minutes.
00:06:42.800 It probably took me an hour or an hour and a half because I hand sewed it.
00:06:46.160 But if you want to use a machine, you totally can.
00:06:48.740 And now, I'm totally in love with our duvet cover.
00:06:51.660 It's perfect for fall.
00:06:53.000 It's got this really lovely texture to it.
00:06:55.200 And I just am so excited about this.
00:06:57.260 I know it's not that important.
00:06:58.660 But it's a really small thing that makes a huge difference.
00:07:02.100 Next up, I have something to admit.
00:07:05.320 And it's pretty obvious.
00:07:06.940 But recently, in a scoop video, I was saying that I want to hold on to summer for as long as possible.
00:07:12.440 And clearly, I didn't do that.
00:07:15.680 We've got a very fall background.
00:07:17.720 I am feeling very fall in my cozy sweater.
00:07:20.480 I've got my fall cup here.
00:07:22.820 But let me explain, okay?
00:07:24.400 Because I felt really guilty about it.
00:07:27.140 The thing that made me crave fall all of a sudden was that the weather here really changed.
00:07:32.580 It was really hot.
00:07:34.060 And then it was 50 degrees and horrible rainstorms.
00:07:37.920 And something about that really swift change at the beginning of September made me feel like,
00:07:42.100 okay, fall is here.
00:07:43.820 And I wanted my home to be cozy when it was that cold outside.
00:07:47.180 So I went to Joanne's, HomeGoods, the Dollar Tree, Target, and I bought some candles.
00:07:54.960 I gave myself just a $20 budget.
00:07:57.800 And I found so much good stuff at the Dollar Tree, number one.
00:08:01.040 And then a few good things at Target.
00:08:02.880 And it just made our whole house feel so much cozier.
00:08:06.900 And I'm really excited for fall.
00:08:09.180 Who am I?
00:08:09.940 I am queen of summer.
00:08:11.280 But apparently, I have now become okay with fall coming in a little bit early.
00:08:16.580 I'm so excited, though, with how my decor back here is looking.
00:08:20.820 I've got this new box, which I really like.
00:08:23.280 I got another box for up here.
00:08:25.300 A few things from last year that I was using to decorate the house I brought into my studio.
00:08:28.780 And I got a few other things for the house from, like I said, the Dollar Tree, which has some really good options.
00:08:33.700 Also, TJ Maxx.
00:08:35.060 There are a bunch of different places that you can look for kind of inexpensive home decor that can just make your house feel a little bit cozier and warmer.
00:08:42.840 And I think the idea of giving yourself a budget before you leave the house and saying, okay, I only want to spend this amount,
00:08:47.420 it gives you just a little bit more of a boundary because it's very easy to spend a lot when you're looking at home decor.
00:08:53.780 So I know I liked having a budget when I went out to shop.
00:08:57.880 And it's something you can build on a little bit every year.
00:09:00.320 So I spent the amount that I'm going to spend this year.
00:09:02.400 And then I might spend a little bit next year and just constantly kind of grow the collection so that the house just feels warm and cozy.
00:09:10.440 And that's something that I really have been enjoying as the weather has been terrible outside.
00:09:14.660 But I've really been feeling that, okay, fall is coming.
00:09:18.820 Maybe part of that is that with coronavirus and the pandemic, it's just nice to have like a cozy at home feeling.
00:09:25.620 You like being at home more because you have to be at home more anyway.
00:09:29.040 So I'm really excited about fall being here.
00:09:32.680 And I want to know what's your favorite thing about fall?
00:09:35.420 Who else is ready for fall?
00:09:37.080 Because I'm ready.
00:09:38.960 Like it's here.
00:09:39.700 I've accepted it.
00:09:40.500 So something that I think kind of goes along with this feeling of the seasons changing is this really strong urge to declutter.
00:09:48.380 I know that I bought stuff for home decor.
00:09:51.060 But I've been wanting to declutter my closet, my shoes, my bathroom.
00:09:56.120 I've just been feeling like I want to get rid of things.
00:09:58.280 And so I have gone through my shoes.
00:10:00.580 I got rid of a few pairs of shoes.
00:10:02.440 One of the pairs that I got rid of is actually my first pair of heels that I ever owned.
00:10:06.540 I got on huge sale from Ann Taylor for $16 and I think I wore them twice.
00:10:11.920 So clearly wasn't that great of a purchase even though they were on sale.
00:10:16.120 And I decided it was time to let those go.
00:10:18.940 I also went through our bathroom and reorganized everything.
00:10:21.560 Got rid of anything that was expired.
00:10:23.300 And just our drawers and our closet in there are a lot more cleaned out.
00:10:26.700 Feels a lot more easy to find things.
00:10:29.180 I also went through my makeup and I got rid of things that I hadn't used in a while.
00:10:33.260 And I'm really excited about it because it's making me use the stuff that I still have.
00:10:38.040 I'm using the things that I own a lot more.
00:10:40.560 And I gave the things that I didn't want to a good friend of mine.
00:10:43.600 And now I feel much more intentional and deliberate about what I do have in my makeup collection.
00:10:47.520 And it's stuff that I really like.
00:10:49.080 And so I am excited about that too.
00:10:51.800 And in cleaning out my closet a little bit, I made a huge discovery.
00:10:56.620 And I know this is going to sound weird.
00:10:58.020 I don't think that I am a skirt girl.
00:11:02.140 I know.
00:11:02.820 It kind of blows my mind too.
00:11:04.500 But I love dresses.
00:11:06.760 I either want to wear dresses or I want to wear pants and a top.
00:11:11.020 But skirts, unless it's a very specific kind of skirt, it's just not something I would choose to wear.
00:11:16.620 I only ever wear skirts if I have to.
00:11:19.420 And so I don't want to keep the skirts that I have just so that I have skirts.
00:11:22.780 So I'm going to get rid of most of my skirts because I just don't like wearing them that much.
00:11:28.300 And it's just a funny kind of realization because I've always been somebody who's owned a lot of skirts.
00:11:32.880 But I don't love skirts.
00:11:35.280 I don't love the way that I feel in skirts.
00:11:37.120 I don't love the way that they work with my body type.
00:11:39.720 And I prefer to just wear dresses or to wear a blouse and some pants.
00:11:45.280 And it's an odd realization, but it is something that I figured out.
00:11:48.780 But I'm excited because I can keep buying pieces that I do like, making my closet really feel personal
00:11:55.420 and feel like it's my style that fills my closet and not just things that I need to own because someone says I have to.
00:12:01.900 It's because I chose that it should be there.
00:12:03.720 And that's a very exciting development.
00:12:05.880 The last thing I want to talk about is something that I have been watching, and that is Boy Meets World.
00:12:11.080 I grew up on Boy Meets World, and I absolutely love that show.
00:12:15.680 I think it teaches so many great lessons.
00:12:18.060 Mr. Feeney is such a great character.
00:12:20.880 I wish I had him as a neighbor and as a teacher.
00:12:23.880 He is so cute and also just a great person.
00:12:28.540 I love his relationship with Eric.
00:12:31.100 That cracks me up every single time.
00:12:33.840 And Cory and Topanga's relationship is so...
00:12:36.880 I love it.
00:12:37.560 There's so much to learn from it, and I love the idea of kids watching this show for the most part.
00:12:42.380 And I think that this show deals with some mature topics in a way that does teach kids good lessons.
00:12:47.140 And I loved the idea that Cory and Topanga wait until marriage to be intimate.
00:12:52.180 I love that so much because it's so rare for TV shows to do that, and it made me so happy when I watched the show.
00:13:00.440 It's just a wonderful, wonderful lesson for young people to take away.
00:13:03.900 It's just a really well done show, and it teaches some great lessons, and it's really funny, and I just have really been enjoying it.
00:13:11.380 So if you haven't watched Boy Meets World, I would definitely check it out, especially if you are thinking about maybe starting a TV show with your kids.
00:13:21.040 Maybe watch it, see if you think it's appropriate, and then you can share it with them or whatever you think.
00:13:26.200 But it is a great show to watch, and it's just a lot of fun, especially if you grew up on it.
00:13:30.000 Then you can kind of reminisce with what you used to watch.
00:13:33.360 So that is it for this week's episode of The Scoop.
00:13:37.340 I hope you guys enjoyed today's video.
00:13:39.500 Let me know in the comments what you've been watching lately, if you've done any kind of home decor things, if you are ready for fall.
