00:00:00.000 Hello beautiful ladies and welcome to today's video where we're going to be talking about
00:00:04.500 why beauty and health are the real body positivity.
00:00:10.480 I don't know if you guys saw this on Instagram, but recently Adele posted a picture of herself
00:00:15.400 and she had this extreme weight loss and she looks absolutely gorgeous.
00:00:21.020 Well, of course there had to be some sort of controversy about it.
00:00:25.880 There were some people who were upset that A, people noticed that she had lost weight,
00:00:31.700 B, that they were congratulating her for losing weight,
00:00:34.740 and C, that they were saying that she looked great having lost weight.
00:00:38.860 Of course to me it's obvious that if someone has an extreme weight loss journey,
00:00:43.060 you're going to notice because they're just going to look different.
00:00:45.960 And secondly, of course people were congratulating her.
00:00:48.940 She looks gorgeous and she worked really hard for it.
00:00:51.700 She wanted to lose some weight and she worked with a trainer to do that.
00:00:55.440 But this whole conversation really got me thinking.
00:00:58.420 It made me think about how the body positivity movement has decided that
00:01:02.360 we need to accept all body types no matter whether they're healthy or not.
00:01:06.600 So here's two things.
00:01:08.280 It's okay to want to look more attractive and put effort into your looks,
00:01:11.720 and it's okay to want to live more healthfully.
00:01:14.280 In fact, it's actively a good thing to do both of those.
00:01:17.500 The problem is there are two movements.
00:01:19.380 We've got the body positivity movement, which is all about accepting body types
00:01:23.660 and being very pro-obesity and not looking for healthy body types,
00:01:27.800 but instead just saying, let's accept everybody.
00:01:30.380 And then we've got people from Hollywood and modeling agencies
00:01:33.860 who are really promoting an anorexic lifestyle or being way too thin.
00:01:38.540 Obviously, either one of those is a real problem.
00:01:41.700 Being obese is not healthy.
00:01:43.580 It comes with a whole host of problems, including heart disease, diabetes,
00:01:48.400 high blood pressure, a bunch of things that are really not good for a long and healthy life.
00:01:54.320 And then on the other side of the spectrum, you've got anorexia,
00:01:56.860 where you have heart, kidney, or liver failure, heart complications,
00:02:00.320 a lot of dangerous stuff on that side of the spectrum too.
00:02:03.360 I actually had an experience where I was talking to a girlfriend of mine
00:02:06.560 who was a plus-size model, and I had said,
00:02:08.680 oh, what about me?
00:02:09.920 If I was interested in modeling, would I be able to break into the business?
00:02:13.400 Well, when I told her my size at the time,
00:02:14.980 she told me I'd either have to be up to a 2 or a 4 or a 12 and up.
00:02:20.440 So any of the normal ranges of body types are not even acceptable in the modeling industry.
00:02:25.920 You either have plus-size models or you have really thin models,
00:02:29.280 and you don't have a representation of body types that are really healthy
00:02:32.920 and within a healthy BMI.
00:02:34.420 It's really scary to me that in social media and in film and movies and TV,
00:02:38.940 we have these really extreme body types.
00:02:41.580 We either have obesity, where the body positivity movement is saying,
00:02:45.480 you're gorgeous, you don't need to lose weight,
00:02:47.660 just keep it what you are, love your body, love yourself.
00:02:51.120 And then you have Hollywood, where it's women who will be very thin,
00:02:55.340 too thin for their height so much of the time, and it's unhealthy too.
00:02:59.420 And then the women in the middle, who are standard healthy body weights,
00:03:02.720 are totally left out to dry.
00:03:04.380 I think that the body positivity movement is helpful and useful
00:03:08.180 when it comes to body dysmorphia,
00:03:10.140 looking in the mirror and not seeing what's actually there.
00:03:13.300 And I think we should learn to see what's there and love what's there.
00:03:16.540 But it also can't encourage unhealthy behaviors in order to love ourselves.
00:03:20.860 If you are 100 pounds overweight or way underweight,
00:03:25.360 those two body types, yes, you should love yourself,
00:03:28.700 but you also need to find a healthy weight for you.
00:03:31.740 What's so crazy about all this is that there are a ton of healthy body weights
00:03:35.360 and a ton of different body types, right?
00:03:37.240 I'm one kind of body type, and then I have friends who have a totally different frame.
00:03:41.500 Both of us live healthy lifestyles.
00:03:42.980 We just look different.
00:03:44.400 And here's the thing.
00:03:45.520 Men are going to be attracted to you as long as you're within the range of healthy.
00:03:48.600 And that is such an interesting thing, right?
00:03:50.740 We have this concept that we have to look one way or another
00:03:53.600 or men won't be attracted to us.
00:03:55.080 But really, men are much more flexible about these things than we give them credit for.
00:03:59.100 Men are going to be attracted to you if you're putting in time and effort into your looks
00:04:02.680 and you're living a healthy lifestyle.
00:04:04.840 Of course, there are men who are attracted to women on those two sides of the spectrum,
00:04:08.800 women who are anorexic, women who are obese.
00:04:11.300 But generally, if you are feeling sensitive about your body,
00:04:14.700 as long as you're within those ranges of normal,
00:04:17.440 most men are going to be attracted to you.
00:04:19.080 But I think the thing that gets lost so often is that healthy is the key word.
00:04:22.960 It's healthy body types.
00:04:24.840 It's not all body types, all weights.
00:04:27.860 It's all healthy body types, all healthy weights.
00:04:31.660 And of course, what's a healthy weight for one person is a totally different weight than somebody else.
00:04:35.540 But pushing this body positivity to just continue what you're doing
00:04:39.600 is actually detrimental to the people who do put in the time and effort to get to a healthier weight.
00:04:44.560 Adele lost weight to be healthier.
00:04:46.740 And when she did so, people weren't just applauding her hard work.
00:04:49.700 There was also some pushback of, but she was beautiful before.
00:04:53.400 She was beautiful before.
00:04:54.740 No one is arguing that, but she does look more beautiful being healthier.
00:04:59.420 Body positivity is only good if it's accomplishing its goal.
00:05:02.880 And it should be accomplishing the goal of loving your body even during its transitional stages
00:05:07.000 to being healthier, to living more healthfully.
00:05:09.820 Women who are within the range of normal just end up being a better looking woman
00:05:13.940 because you're carrying your weight better or your muscle tone is more defined or whatever it is.
00:05:19.520 And there are tons of different ways that you can exercise and tons of different diets you can do
00:05:23.260 as long as they're giving you the right nutrients and whatever that is.
00:05:26.300 So it's not like I'm saying everyone needs to weight lift or everyone needs to do cardio.
00:05:29.920 You find what works for you.
00:05:31.520 And on top of that, it's not just about the women who are naturally thin.
00:05:35.040 That is not what I'm talking about.
00:05:36.560 Because even women who are naturally thin can end up being unhealthy
00:05:39.900 if they're not taking care of their bodies and eating the right foods for them.
00:05:43.420 You can end up being what they call skinny fat, where you look like you have the right body weight,
00:05:48.160 but you just don't have any muscle tone or you're carrying too much fat for your body type.
00:05:53.060 So living in a healthy way is the key to being attractive.
00:05:57.280 And what do I mean when I say attractive?
00:05:58.700 I don't just mean physically attractive.
00:06:00.820 I'm not just talking about having a pretty face or having a naturally nice body.
00:06:05.960 I'm talking about being attractive in the sense that if a person looks at you,
00:06:10.100 they know that you are taking care of yourself.
00:06:12.480 You are putting in time to exercise.
00:06:15.180 You are putting in time to eat healthfully.
00:06:17.400 You're putting in time to brush your hair in the morning.
00:06:19.640 Men are interested in dating women who they think can take care of themselves
00:06:22.380 because it translates into being able to take care of others.
00:06:25.720 Now, I'm not saying that no one ever can take care of you.
00:06:28.360 Of course, we all need help sometimes.
00:06:30.460 And there are times if you have mental health problems,
00:06:32.620 your husband's going to be there for you, your partner, your parents.
00:06:35.600 All of that is totally normal.
00:06:37.260 And that is not what I'm talking about.
00:06:38.920 But I'm saying if you're constantly walking around as if you didn't wash your face
00:06:43.720 or didn't brush your hair and it looks like you aren't able to take care of yourself,
00:06:48.520 it's hard for a man to know if that's going to translate into a good family life.
00:06:52.500 But if you are really putting in the effort to take care of yourself
00:06:55.240 as opposed to this whole body positivity movement,
00:06:57.840 which is love yourself no matter what you're doing,
00:07:00.440 then it's going to be harder for a man to know that he can trust
00:07:03.300 that your life together will be smooth.
00:07:06.020 At the end of the day, putting effort into your looks
00:07:08.100 by eating mindfully, exercising regularly, taking care of your body,
00:07:13.300 those things are really important.
00:07:15.100 And it's not realistic to expect that anyone is going to be attracted to you
00:07:19.100 even if you don't do those things.
00:07:20.780 If you're anorexic or if you're obese,
00:07:23.200 either side of the spectrum is really dangerous.
00:07:26.020 We should all be aiming to be right in that great zone of a healthy body weight
00:07:30.180 and a healthy exercise level and a healthy meal plan
00:07:33.520 where we're really putting effort into being our best selves.
00:07:37.540 And that's really being body positive,
00:07:39.340 which is I respect my body enough to care for it.
00:07:42.660 And if I don't, yeah, there's a very high chance
00:07:45.580 that that life expectancy is going to shorten,
00:07:48.380 whether that be through being underweight or overweight.
00:07:50.740 So instead, let's all work towards being healthy, living healthily,
00:07:56.140 and because of that and on top of that,
00:07:58.040 putting an effort into really looking put together.
00:08:00.700 I know that the women on the cover of magazines
00:08:02.420 that I always gravitate to are the ones who look like normal, everyday women.
00:08:06.360 Not the kind of women who are getting paid to do fitness workouts,
00:08:08.800 which, hey, all respect to them,
00:08:10.660 that's a really healthy lifestyle too.
00:08:12.140 But the women who are working within their boundaries
00:08:14.020 of exercising three times a week
00:08:16.120 and trying to eat as many nutrient-rich meals as possible
00:08:19.080 and making an effort to look their best by being healthy.
00:08:23.660 That's the stuff that really appeals to me.
00:08:25.880 And it makes me sad that we have these extreme polarizations
00:08:29.420 between really underweight and really overweight.
00:08:33.020 Instead, let's all look to be healthy
00:08:34.880 because being healthy, putting energy into your fitness and into your diet,
00:08:38.980 those things are going to give you a better lifestyle
00:08:41.740 and you're going to feel better and look better at the end of the day.
