In this episode, Pastor Ken teaches on the role of the gospel in preaching the Ten Commandments and how it is the most absent piece of the modern gospel. We live in a time where most Christians proclaim an impotent gospel because many believers reject the doctrines of grace and Calvinism. They believe that salvation is about persuasion, rather than the sovereignty of God over salvation through the proclamation of the Gospel.

00:00:00.000 So we live in a time where most Christians proclaim an impotent gospel. 0.95
00:00:05.780 Because many believers reject the doctrines of grace or aka Calvinism, 0.61
00:00:11.200 they believe that salvation is about persuasion of a person's, quote, free will.
00:00:17.360 When you have that, essentially, you believe that coming to faith is about persuasion
00:00:27.000 rather than the sovereignty of God over salvation
00:00:30.920 through the proclamation of the gospel.
00:00:33.480 And as a result, what happens?
00:00:35.240 Well, people become winsome.
00:00:37.940 They become persuasive.
00:00:39.840 And this is how we got the pragmatic church movement
00:00:42.820 where you get a lion and smoke machines
00:00:45.740 and a rock band on the stage
00:00:48.880 in hopes that you might persuade people to Jesus.
00:00:52.980 And when you become winsome,
00:00:54.800 people tend to eliminate the bad news, which makes the good news so good. And what they do is they
00:01:03.660 refrain from telling people about God's law. They refrain from telling people about God's law. And
00:01:11.100 more than that, they refrain from telling people about their inability to keep that law, their
00:01:16.900 guilty standing before that law, and the eternal consequences of breaking that law. This is probably
00:01:24.160 the most absent piece of the modern gospel today. You see, when you fail to tell people
00:01:30.780 the bad news, the bad news that God's moral law has jurisdiction over their life
00:01:39.600 because they are creatures made by the creator and that they are guilty of breaking that law.
00:01:47.140 What we do as Christians, as people, is we compare ourselves to the moral standing of
00:01:53.260 another person. Well, I'm better than that guy. When reality, we should be comparing ourselves
00:02:00.220 to the standard of God for righteousness, which is his moral law. And when you look at the 10
00:02:05.320 commandments, you quickly realize that you cannot keep them, that you've broken all of them and that
00:02:10.380 you, maybe not all of them because not everybody's a murderer, but we do know that Jesus talks about
00:02:16.020 hatred in the heart is a similar sin. But what I'm saying is that when you compare yourself
00:02:24.600 to God's moral law, you realize that you fall short quickly. And this is important in the
00:02:31.080 preaching of the gospel. When you fail to tell people the bad news of their guilt and shame
00:02:40.540 before the jurisdiction of God's moral law,
00:02:44.900 the good news is really no longer impressive.
00:02:48.080 That is that when sinners don't see the gravity
00:02:50.480 of their own sinfulness,
00:02:52.420 they cannot appreciate the righteousness of a savior.
00:02:56.360 They cannot appreciate the desperate need
00:02:58.820 that they have to be found righteous.
00:03:01.120 And they want a way to get that righteousness.
00:03:05.280 And the only way to make an unrighteous person righteous
00:03:08.420 is to receive an alien righteousness.
00:03:11.720 You need to receive a righteousness
00:03:12.960 from someone who has kept the law
00:03:15.060 that will give you their righteousness.
00:03:17.960 And this is what Jesus Christ does through faith.
00:03:20.880 He pays for your sin as your substitute,
00:03:23.060 dying on your behalf,
00:03:24.560 and then gives you his righteous record
00:03:26.760 of perfectly keeping the law through faith.
00:03:30.180 The terror of the law is what drives people to grace.
00:03:35.120 This is what the Bible teaches.
00:03:36.800 is you always see the apostles preaching the law, 0.93
00:03:42.620 making sure that nobody believes
00:03:44.940 that they can earn salvation through obedience
00:03:48.140 or morality or righteous works.
00:03:51.300 Because once you've broken the law,
00:03:52.920 once you are guilty of it all.
00:03:56.120 James, man, I can't think of the verse,
00:03:58.460 but James 2.10, I think is what it is.
00:04:01.640 He who has broken the law at one point
00:04:03.260 is guilty of all of it.
00:04:05.400 And so even if you never broke the law
00:04:08.100 one time in your entire life,
00:04:11.140 and then at age 74, you broke the law,
00:04:14.820 that one break of the law
00:04:17.180 will make you unrighteous for eternity.
00:04:19.660 You need an alien righteousness.
00:04:21.320 Now, I believe that we have original sin,
00:04:24.120 the sin that's imputed to us from birth.
00:04:26.480 We don't, we're not sinners because we sin,
00:04:29.840 we sin because we're born sinners.
00:04:33.060 And so there's a lot there, but the law must be preached.
00:04:38.120 This is the normative gospel presentation
00:04:40.340 of the apostles in the scriptures.
00:04:42.460 They would afflict a person with the truth of the law
00:04:45.060 to bring them to their knees in sorrow, shame, and guilt.
00:04:48.980 And then they would present Jesus Christ
00:04:52.260 in whom they can find forgiveness,
00:04:54.300 redemption, and imputation of righteousness.
00:04:57.660 And this is how we must communicate to the LGBT community.
00:05:02.600 We have to lovingly tell them of God's law
00:05:06.260 around righteousness on gender and sexuality and marriage.
00:05:11.680 We can't withhold the very thing that produces guilt
00:05:17.880 that leads to repentance.
00:05:19.300 Again, no law, no repentance.
00:05:22.280 And this is what's absent in most of the preaching
00:05:24.740 of the gospel in the modern day.
00:05:27.700 And so remember, it's not about persuasion,
00:05:31.000 It's about proclamation.
00:05:32.920 And when it's God who changes the heart,
00:05:36.440 all you have to worry about is being faithful
00:05:39.100 to talk about the law.
00:05:40.300 And I often tell people, I say,
00:05:41.360 hey, you're a creature, you were made,
00:05:44.820 and you have a maker, and that maker has a law
00:05:47.800 and has a right to demand how you ought to live.
00:05:52.140 And he's revealed that in the 10 commandments,
00:05:54.440 and you've broken that law,
00:05:56.440 and you need to be found righteous.
00:05:58.880 That's your great need in humanity is to be found righteous
00:06:02.640 and you need to be forgiven.
00:06:05.340 And so everybody, I feel like my experience with people
00:06:08.540 is that everybody has an understanding
00:06:10.940 that they have something to be forgiven for.
00:06:14.340 They just don't know who they need to be forgiven by.
00:06:17.680 And so there's this conscience that people have
00:06:20.500 that they are struggling with guilt and shame,
00:06:24.060 but they don't know where to put that.
00:06:27.040 And the only way to really remove that guilt and shame
00:06:30.280 is to come to the cross.
00:06:32.040 And so, yes, we need to be passionate and sincere,
00:06:34.840 but we must not rely on our ability
00:06:37.620 to convince a person to come to Christ.
00:06:40.900 We simply need to present a bad news, good news gospel,
00:06:44.720 and allow God to change the heart.
00:06:46.460 So in the end, the Christian hope for Pride Month
00:06:51.240 is that those who are enslaved to sin 0.92
00:06:55.400 around issues of homosexuality and transgenderism,
00:06:58.780 they need to lay that pride at the foot of the cross,
00:07:03.000 where Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit
00:07:05.760 can change their affections of their hearts
00:07:08.360 and restore to them a righteous nature.
00:07:12.080 Grace restores nature.
00:07:15.180 God doesn't just change what we do,
00:07:17.320 he actually changes what we want to do.
00:07:25.400 We'll be right back.
