00:00:00.480 Five success principles that I use to really get the most
00:00:03.560 out of life and business.
00:00:05.440 You know, I get asked often from entrepreneurs,
00:00:08.160 kind of, what are some of the habits that I have
00:00:10.080 or some of the ways I think about business
00:00:12.160 that really have impacted my career?
00:00:14.320 You know, I don't know if you know,
00:00:15.160 but I've built five companies,
00:00:16.560 even though the first two are complete failures.
00:00:18.800 The last three had, you know, quite a bit of success.
00:00:21.240 I ended up raising venture capital.
00:00:23.000 My last company got acquired in February,
00:00:25.200 and I feel super blessed that all those things happen,
00:00:27.640 But really, they're kind of attributed
00:00:29.500 to a bunch of different strategies.
00:00:31.340 And that's what I want to share with you guys,
00:00:32.580 five different strategies to really
00:00:34.520 get the best success out of your life.
00:00:37.320 The first one is momentum.
00:00:39.020 When people ask me, what is my responsibility
00:00:40.880 as a founder or CEO,
00:00:42.220 I'm gonna, first thing that comes to mind is momentum.
00:00:45.020 You gotta think about the team that you have
00:00:47.600 and the investors and the different advisors
00:00:49.600 that you might have together.
00:00:50.700 How do you get everybody moving forward?
00:00:52.340 And once you get them going,
00:00:53.940 keep them going forward again.
00:00:56.640 Like, some people talk about a flywheel that's turning
00:00:58.880 and you gotta keep them that momentum.
00:01:00.620 But that to me is, every day I ask myself,
00:01:03.340 where are we slowing down?
00:01:04.620 How can I increase that?
00:01:06.080 Where do we need to get started?
00:01:07.380 Because that starting phase is always
00:01:09.120 where there's a lot of friction and it's new,
00:01:11.680 so people aren't too keen on doing it.
00:01:13.660 And then once things are moving, keep them in motion.
00:01:16.560 So, number one strategy is just momentum.
00:01:19.500 The second one is habits.
00:01:20.900 You know, when I think about the most impactful advice
00:01:23.960 I ever got, it was from a neighbour, actually,
00:01:26.640 Wayne, who was the only kind of entrepreneur I knew. He had a few motels and some real estate
00:01:31.980 projects. And I remember sitting down with Wayne, asking him one day, because I was just getting
00:01:35.380 going as an entrepreneur, I said, what is the one piece of advice you can give me? And Wayne said,
00:01:40.160 habits. Now, I, at the time, thought it was the most ridiculous advice ever. I was expecting 0.98
00:01:45.040 something way deeper and mind-blowing than habits. But I can't tell you how important it is,
00:01:50.940 because if you have the right habits, you can avoid the ups and downs. I don't know if you've
00:01:54.960 ever experienced this in your business where things are going
00:01:57.260 really well and then all of a sudden you change things and 0.55
00:02:00.300 they go really bad and then you're like oh crap they're 0.67
00:02:02.540 broken so then you get really back engaged in your business
00:02:04.800 and they get better again and you go through this crazy ups
00:02:07.180 and downs and what I try to do is I try to ask myself what are
00:02:10.180 some habits, some success habits that if I implemented into my
00:02:13.480 business would continue that upward trend of progress without
00:02:18.860 always feeling like once things got good I could take my eye
00:02:21.680 off of it, go work on something else.
00:02:23.280 So it's habits that I ask myself from marketing,
00:02:25.920 product development, just leadership, even finance.
00:02:29.420 What are things that I'm willing to do on a daily basis,
00:02:31.580 maybe every two weeks or even on a monthly, quarterly basis,
00:02:34.860 that I know are gonna be important to keep things going
00:02:38.160 in the right direction and those are habits
00:02:39.720 and I try to only add one new one every 60 days.
00:02:42.760 I know some people talk about the 21 days.
00:02:44.640 I don't know about you but 21 doesn't seem like enough
00:02:46.800 to really create that habit and that routine.
00:02:49.040 So I go 60 days and then I introduce another one.
00:02:52.880 The other idea that I like to think about
00:02:55.080 is just keeping things simple.
00:02:57.020 When I talk to entrepreneurs and they feel overwhelmed
00:02:59.020 or they just have way too many things going on,
00:03:02.020 I just ask them to simplify their life.
00:03:04.920 I ask them, why do you do all these other things
00:03:06.920 when you could just be doing these one, two,
00:03:08.860 or three things at max?
00:03:11.360 They've got 10 things going on.
00:03:13.000 And it's funny, some people just feel like
00:03:15.800 they have some super power.
00:03:17.540 And the way I look at it is management bandwidth.
00:03:20.500 So if you don't have a bunch of managers
00:03:22.680 other than yourself, then you don't have the capacity
00:03:25.580 to take on multiple projects.
00:03:26.880 So I try to keep things simple, and the reason why
00:03:29.380 is because when they're simple, I can go deep.
00:03:31.680 And when I go deep, I can truly, truly understand
00:03:34.120 and get the value out of the execution part of the project.
00:03:37.820 So a lot of people, they start a marketing strategy,
00:03:40.800 and they might build some landing pages
00:03:42.540 and some Facebook ads, but they don't go deep.
00:03:44.840 They don't focus, then they start doing other stuff,
00:03:47.340 like YouTube and Twitter page channels,
00:03:49.900 and they didn't just keep it simple,
00:03:52.340 Go deep and focus so that they can really get the value
00:03:54.840 out of that, so that's a big one.
00:03:56.840 You know, the other one I'm gonna say in line with that
00:03:58.780 is strategy.
00:03:59.840 You know, just understanding, where are you today?
00:04:02.020 Where do you wanna be in the next one, three, five years?
00:04:05.460 And what strategy can you kinda map out for the next year
00:04:09.660 on a quarterly basis or monthly basis
00:04:11.320 that's gonna get you to that point?
00:04:13.820 And if you don't have that, then every new idea
00:04:16.960 that you can think of is a great idea.
00:04:19.200 Every new idea is something you should be doing.
00:04:21.400 You could be at dinner with a bunch of friends
00:04:23.160 and they're like, oh, you should try to do this
00:04:24.740 for your business, and you're like, oh, that's so great,
00:04:26.180 and you do it again, and you see how as soon
00:04:28.280 as you start doing that, all the other things
00:04:30.440 I just talked about kind of go out the wayside.
00:04:32.580 Your habits, simplifying stuff, all these items
00:04:36.740 just get really difficult to do, so having a strategy,
00:04:39.760 for me, it allows me to say no quickly,
00:04:43.220 in a nice, polite way, so every day on a daily basis,
00:04:46.700 I get a dozen emails from amazing people,
00:04:49.420 heart-centered people that want me involved in their projects
00:04:52.460 that they have an idea for my business.
00:04:54.360 And because I have a strategy figured out,
00:04:57.060 I can quickly evaluate, do I really think doing that project
00:05:00.500 and taking this one out is gonna be,
00:05:02.360 have a bigger impact for the result
00:05:03.860 that I'm trying to attain?
00:05:04.940 The answer's no, boom, simple, quick, no.
00:05:07.440 Thank you, appreciate it, we thought about it, not a fit.
00:05:10.400 And I just feel like that'll allow you to do so much
00:05:13.040 as an entrepreneur, really help you create these,
00:05:15.220 you know, success principles.
00:05:16.980 The last thing I'm gonna tell you guys,
00:05:18.540 And the fifth one is to enjoy the journey.
00:05:22.200 It's not about the outcome.
00:05:23.800 I don't know if you've heard me say this before,
00:05:25.140 but a lot of people, they're striving for the mountaintop.
00:05:27.980 And trust me, once you get there, if you've ever been there,
00:05:30.340 you realize that you start looking at the horizon
00:05:33.600 and you start plotting out your next mountaintop.
00:05:35.940 So it is truly not about achieving.
00:05:38.900 It is about the journey.
00:05:40.020 So no matter where you are in your entrepreneurial journey
00:05:42.440 today, embrace and love the process.
00:05:45.460 Love the fact that you feel frustrated,
00:05:47.740 that your team isn't always listening
00:05:49.240 or that you feel like you're doing
00:05:50.320 way more than everybody else
00:05:51.460 because that truly is the reason we do this.
00:05:54.420 And if you can bring that level of appreciation
00:05:57.300 and gratitude for even the frustrating times,
00:05:59.480 it just makes everything else so much easier.
00:06:02.320 So I wanna hear from you.
