00:00:00.000 Hey everybody, Dan Martell here, entrepreneur, investor, and today I'm pumped to talk to you about something that's been frustrating the bejesus out of me.
00:00:08.260 I just told my friend Martin about it, which is most people, and you are definitely not this person, maybe you are, but let's just pretend for this video that you're not,
00:00:17.020 is most people would rather be entertained than educated, right?
00:00:21.660 And it seems like a subtle thing, because you're like, Dan, you're so entertaining and you're teaching me stuff.
00:00:25.080 What are you talking about? I love this. Why would you stop doing that?
00:00:27.520 What I'm trying to say is most people would rather zone out and watch four hours of TV than actually learn something.
00:00:34.920 Move their dreams and ideas forward.
00:00:37.580 Maybe their health.
00:00:38.420 Maybe their relationship with their family.
00:00:40.100 Whatever it is, they would rather sit there and be numbed out by watching the news.
00:00:44.240 If you watch the news, let me teach you a trick.
00:00:46.620 Turn it the F off.
00:00:47.680 Never turn that stuff on.
00:00:48.960 If somebody puts the news on around me, I politely ask them to turn it off.
00:00:52.400 It's just one of those things where I feel like we're not accountable for the audio crap that comes into our ears, right?
00:00:59.160 It's no different than eating McDonald's for your health
00:01:01.560 You want to make sure that you're conscious about what you're learning or what what's entertaining or distracting you?
00:01:06.640 So there's three ways that I actually educate myself because you know
00:01:10.680 I grew up in a really challenging environment got in a lot of trouble as a kid and found mentors
00:01:15.160 It really changed my life right most people would have thought that I would end up dead in a ditch or in an institution or jail
00:01:21.220 And, you know, since then I've had, you know, I've been totally blown away by the success I've had in business.
00:01:26.520 You know, I've built five companies.
00:01:27.920 The first two were complete failures.
00:01:29.880 But eventually moved to San Francisco, raised money, and did things that a lot of people find inspiring.
00:01:35.860 And I teach out of a place of love and care because I know that I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for the people that gave back to me.
00:01:42.480 And one of the biggest lessons that I learned was invest in myself, educate myself.
00:01:47.160 You know, I never went to university, so I don't really have formal education.
00:01:51.400 I taught myself how to program in rehab, right?
00:01:54.280 So I was lucky.
00:01:55.180 Maybe I was fortunate.
00:01:56.020 Maybe it was whatever you want to call a divine intervention that I learned how to code,
00:02:00.360 and that sent me on a different path throughout my life to build technology companies.
00:02:04.820 But there's three things that I do today continuously, no matter what I'm jumping into,
00:02:09.180 some new strategy, maybe a company I invested in that helps me ramp up what I know as fast,
00:02:14.940 as fast as possible, and I want to teach that today.
00:02:17.160 And those three things is, one, find the best people in the space.
00:02:21.200 These are people that have been there, had success, mentor, teach, whatever it is.
00:02:26.040 If you want to learn about Bitcoin, which is something that's super interesting to me,
00:02:29.300 find the top experts.
00:02:30.840 Reach out to them.
00:02:31.740 Read their blogs.
00:02:32.580 Watch their YouTube videos.
00:02:34.080 Really just immerse yourself in their knowledge.
00:02:38.640 Read the books.
00:02:39.320 Just go on a complete knowledge bin.
00:02:43.160 The second thing is, is get the frick out of your place.
00:02:46.480 Like, leave the city, the house, your office, and go to an event on that topic.
00:02:52.180 There's something about the proximity of being around those people that is really powerful.
00:02:59.280 It's energizing.
00:03:00.740 You get to what I call a pitch and catch.
00:03:03.640 You're able to share some of the ideas that you've learned so far and also have them pitch some other ones back and catch that.
00:03:11.060 And really, like, take your thinking and understanding and move it forward.
00:03:16.480 And the third thing, which I'm doing right now as an example, is teach other people.
00:03:21.160 There is something magical when you are a student under the premise of I'm going to
00:03:26.580 teach somebody else.
00:03:28.020 You know, I always tell people when they're having a bad day, the number one thing you
00:03:30.980 can do to switch that around is be of service to somebody else, right?
00:03:34.760 No matter how challenging the morning would have been, in the afternoon, the first thing
00:03:39.620 you do is send out a few emails to people and say, hey, is there anything I can help
00:03:42.300 you with?
00:03:42.560 Because getting into that state of service, getting into that mode of teaching other people is one of the fastest way to just get a sense of gratitude and joy out of seeing somebody else progress in their life.
00:03:54.640 And I feel like when I learn something, when I know that, you know, by reading this book, the first thing I'm going to do is teach it to my wife, teach it to my kids, teach it to my family.
00:04:03.880 I learn from a different perspective.
00:04:06.240 So I don't watch TV.
00:04:08.480 I don't numb myself.
00:04:10.340 I don't really care about consuming that information.
00:04:12.560 because I just feel like life is so full of opportunities
00:04:15.340 that I'm sure I can find a topic that I'm interested in
00:04:18.020 and go through that same framework I just shared with you
00:04:20.120 to get educated.
00:04:21.640 So stop being entertained only.
00:04:24.880 A little bit of both goes a long way.
00:04:27.400 Hopefully you found that of service
00:04:28.920 and I would ask you to leave a comment below
00:04:30.940 with some of the biggest takeaway
00:04:32.760 or the number one thing you learned
00:04:34.380 that really resonated with you
00:04:35.620 and I will see you next week.
00:04:37.500 Have a great day.
