completely support the death penalty being the sentence in this case for an entire litany

of reasons, uh, Knowles, you know, what's going on here when I hear the head of our church

saying that I can't be pro-life and support that.

Yes, this has been a strange development in recent years because for the entire history

of the church up until at least Benedict the 16th, uh, the church defended the death penalty.

Uh, around the time of John Paul II, uh, there were these prudential arguments made against

So to say the death penalty in principle is fine, but in practice today, it should not be

carried out because we have other ways of dealing with criminals.

Uh, Benedict the 16th advanced that line though.

Benedict the 16th did say that, that Catholics, uh, with reasonable minds could disagree on

And then it was really Pope Francis who came out and he said that the, the death penalty

Now he didn't say intrinsically evil because that would contradict 2000 years of magisterial

teaching, many popes, some of whom carried out the death penalty, saints, doctors of the

Uh, so it couldn't, couldn't be that, but, but anyway, this, this seems to have developed.

And I guess my response to, to that would be, okay, sure.

Uh, if, if we're going to define the phrase pro-life in its broadest possible term, then

to give some kind of lifetime achievement award to a senator who has defended wholesale slaughter

of children, which is not just one issue among many, but it pertains to the right to life,

which is the fundamental right from which all the other rights spring.

And I think, okay, if we're just going to semantically overload the phrase pro-life to

When it comes to the death penalty, I don't know, as a, as a matter of principle, I guess

I know the church's teaching on this cannot really change.

Maybe it's above my pay grade, but, uh, Pope Benedict's statement that reasonable minds might

disagree prudentially strikes me as, as being rather reasonable.

Well, and you've got the great series on Pope Pius that you've been working on and, you

know, Pope Pius XII has one of the greatest quotes about this.

I imagine you probably could where he said, in the case of the death penalty, this is not

You mentioned Pius XII, his predecessor, Pius IX is beatified on his way to canonization

And he not only defended the death penalty, but actually carried it out about 500 times

He was asked for a reprieve for the last one in the papal states.

He said, I cannot give you a reprieve and I do not want to.

I think that what, what some people have a little trouble understanding in the secular

world in modernity is, is why one would defend the death penalty.

And they think it's because we're bloodthirsty and mean or something like that.

We don't value human dignity, but it's actually the opposite because the defense of the death

penalty goes all the way back to the book of Genesis, the early chapters of Genesis,

which say, whosoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed for man is made

So it's actually that the death penalty is defended precisely because of human dignity.

And St. Paul reaffirms this when he says that the civil authority does not bear the sword

So I'm not saying that the Pope cannot exercise his teaching role and cannot push prudential

measures that might circumscribe some of these things.

But there is a reason that even a pontiff as liberal as Pope Francis would, would not

And so I just think it's not helpful for people to mention the death penalty when we're trying
