00:09:45.460 So, Scott, how did we get here?
00:09:47.520 By the way, I'd love to talk to you about the Russia book,
00:09:50.020 but unfortunately, we don't have time to talk about just the Russia situation
00:09:54.280 because we've embarked on another situation,
00:09:57.080 even while we're in the midst of a current proxy war with Russia.
00:10:01.600 I've been talking about John Mearsheimer, the great Professor Mearsheimer,
00:10:04.960 and his warning of the U.S. attempting to overextend itself into multiple world conflicts at the same time.
00:10:11.160 And now here we are.
00:10:12.100 President Joe Biden is just hours away from delivering an address to the entire nation
00:10:16.760 on not only how we can, but why we should be embarked in two major world conflicts at the same time.
00:10:23.880 How did we get here, and what are the forces driving this?
00:10:28.140 Well, look, it's a huge and great question.
00:10:30.980 I would refer, first and foremost, really, to one of the greatest experts on all of this,
00:10:36.660 from the way you frame it there.
00:10:38.140 It's Pat Buchanan from the 1990s who ran for president.
00:10:41.820 He was Ronald Reagan, first Nixon, and then Ronald Reagan's speechwriter,
00:10:45.480 and CNN, and then MSNBC host.
00:10:48.640 And he ran against Bush Sr. in the primaries in 1992,
00:10:53.100 and then later switched to the Reform Party.
00:10:55.460 And he wrote this incredible book called The Republic, Not an Empire.
00:10:59.700 And Jack, basically at the end of the Cold War, 30 years ago,
00:11:02.920 the Soviet Union ceased to exist on Christmas Day, 1991, was the final day.
00:11:08.040 And at that point, there is a major section of the conservative and libertarian movement,
00:11:13.820 especially, that said, the Cold War is over, the emergency is over,
00:11:18.980 world communism is dead, now it's time to end our empire
00:11:22.860 and bring our troops home from around the world,
00:11:25.800 and let Europe and Asia take care of their own security needs.
00:11:29.120 As Ronald Reagan's ambassador to the UN, Gene Kirkpatrick,
00:11:34.200 who was herself a neoconservative hawk,
00:11:37.100 she said, oh, well, now we can be a normal country in a normal time.
00:11:42.300 She said, now we can shed the burdens of superpower status
00:11:47.740 and seek to preserve our own liberty in our own society here at home.
00:11:53.700 And instead, the National Security Establishment refused, Jack,
00:11:58.820 to just get a real job.
00:12:00.540 And they found reasons to expand America's footprint in the Middle East,
00:12:04.820 of course, with Iraq War I,
00:12:06.640 and then, you know, the rest of the Bill Clinton doctrine,
00:12:09.300 Iraq War I and a half through the 1990s.
00:12:11.820 And, of course, NATO expansion in Eastern Europe,
00:12:16.320 and also a buildup in Asia as well, but leave that aside for now.
00:12:20.020 And guess what?
00:12:20.760 It's no coincidence at all, and it's no conspiracy either.
00:12:23.780 There's books about it, New York Times articles all about it.
00:12:26.220 It was Bruce Jackson, an executive vice president from Lockheed Martin Marietta,
00:12:32.120 who founded the Committee for NATO Expansion
00:12:35.540 and the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq.
00:12:38.680 And this is just basic economics.
00:12:40.440 This is just basic rent-seeking by government contractors.
00:12:44.400 It doesn't matter whether it's, you know,
00:12:46.700 the military or any other government program.
00:12:49.020 They would rather get paid with tax money than have to compete in the marketplace.
00:12:53.580 And that was exactly what happened.
00:12:55.480 And not just them, but the national security bureaucracies themselves, of course,
00:12:59.960 the generals and all the spies at CIA and at the National Security Agency
00:13:04.860 and all these guys.
00:13:06.280 No one wants to give up their fiefdom.
00:13:08.260 If our base is not for containing the Soviet Union,
00:13:10.900 then maybe it's for interdicting drugs,
00:13:12.780 or maybe it's for threatening Iran,
00:13:15.060 or maybe it's for providing security from some pipeline we're building
00:13:18.820 to cut the Russians out of the Caspian Sea,
00:13:21.120 or some other project.
00:13:22.980 Anything but coming home.
00:13:24.980 And so what they did was they got us into the terror war,
00:13:29.380 and then they fought it for 20 years
00:13:31.460 and don't have a single thing to show for it.
00:13:33.880 And they, of course, started and built up this massive new Cold War with Russia,
00:13:40.240 which has now expressed itself in this horrific war in Ukraine
00:13:44.500 for the last year and a half that, as we all know,
00:13:46.720 could also spiral out of control into major power conflict.
00:13:51.280 And so, you know, you can stop me at any time.
00:13:55.420 But, you know, I think one thing I'd like to point out here
00:13:58.100 is you can see the bust of Ron Paul behind me there on the shelf.
00:14:00.760 And I hope probably most of your audience remembers
00:14:04.720 in the Republican primary in 2007,
00:14:08.640 well, hopefully there's young people who don't remember,
00:14:10.760 in the Republican primary in 2007,
00:14:12.840 Ron Paul got into a tangle with Rudy Giuliani in the debate.
00:14:17.060 It was in May.
00:14:18.200 And what happened was they fought over the cause of the September 11th attack.
00:14:21.920 And Ron Paul said that, look,
00:14:24.160 this was blowback from American foreign policy.
00:14:27.380 And Rudy Giuliani said, oh, how dare you?
00:14:29.680 You're saying America deserved it.
00:14:31.600 You're crazy.
00:14:32.440 And I don't know.
00:14:33.020 I demand you retract that or some ridiculous,
00:14:35.360 bullying, non sequitur statement.
00:14:37.500 And Ron Paul said, no.
00:14:39.320 The CIA coined the term blowback.
00:14:42.000 It means the long-term consequences of their foreign policies,
00:14:46.380 their secret policies.
00:14:48.180 And even, look, as we all know,
00:14:50.780 America had been bombing Iraq from bases in Saudi Arabia
00:14:54.860 for 10 years before September 11th.
00:14:59.620 And that was why they attacked us.
00:15:01.960 And further, he said, quite correctly,
00:15:04.420 that the reason they attacked us was actually to draw us in further.
00:15:08.620 And that's why they're glad we're in a sandpit in Iraq right now,
00:15:11.920 where they can bleed us to bankruptcy.
00:15:13.500 Our guys are within rifle range.
00:15:15.860 They can take their revenge and give us our own Vietnam,
00:15:19.200 like we did to the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 80s.
00:15:23.240 And this was just 100% correct.
00:15:25.500 And Rudy Giuliani didn't know what to say.
00:15:27.640 But millions of Americans said, you know, that's right.
00:15:30.360 I remember Bill Clinton bombing Iraq on,
00:15:32.840 according to the New York Times,
00:15:33.880 every other day on average for eight years straight
00:15:36.240 from bases in Saudi Arabia.
00:15:38.820 And I remember actually a little bit of Newsweek from 96 and 98
00:15:42.940 when they bombed the Khobar Towers,
00:15:44.640 which Clinton blamed on Iran, by the way.
00:15:46.300 And when they bombed the USS Cole and the African embassies,
00:15:51.020 that, yeah, this bin Laden guy's out to get us.
00:15:53.320 That was going on before September 11th.
00:15:56.120 And it was American foreign policies that had created it.
00:15:59.040 It wasn't radical Islam.
00:16:00.900 It was radical politics.
00:16:03.340 You know, you look at, in fact, all of the millions of people
00:16:06.480 who believe in Salafism and Wahhabism
00:16:09.080 and the most radical sects of Sunni Islam.
00:16:11.860 They don't all attack us.
00:16:13.220 They don't all join up ISIS,
00:16:14.640 even at the height of the Islamic State.
00:16:16.680 They had, what, a couple of hundred thousand fighters
00:16:18.260 out of 1.5 billion people.
00:16:20.600 It was bin Laden and his particular group,
00:16:23.220 him and his alliance with Egyptian Islamic Jihad,
00:16:25.920 that had this political ideology.
00:16:28.360 And we want to take on the American empire first
00:16:30.620 so we can have our local revolutions later.
00:16:33.320 And I don't want to say Bush fell for it
00:16:35.200 in a way that acquits him and says that,
00:16:37.360 oh, he was just a big dummy.
00:16:38.520 Because, in fact, the purpose of the September 11th attack
00:16:41.300 was to give Bush a crisis to exploit.
00:16:46.260 And, Jack, I don't know if you've ever read this,
00:16:47.760 but bin Laden's son, Omar,
00:16:49.740 gave an interview to Rolling Stone magazine in 2010.
00:16:54.260 And he said,
00:16:55.480 I was in Afghanistan in the year 2000.
00:16:59.160 And when Bush was elected,
00:17:00.700 he said, my father was so happy.
00:17:03.040 This is a president who will attack
00:17:05.800 and who will spend money and break the country.
00:17:09.180 In other words,
00:17:09.920 the big fake macho cowboy hat wearing,
00:17:13.760 you know, pampered,
00:17:14.820 not really tough guy from Connecticut
00:17:17.160 is going to,
00:17:18.860 with Mark written all over his forehead,
00:17:21.500 he's going to exploit this cynically.
00:17:24.880 And then that was the goal.
00:17:26.160 The same thing,
00:17:26.900 the same reasons the big new Brzezinski
00:17:28.460 and the Carter administration
00:17:29.720 tried to lure the Soviet Union into Afghanistan
00:17:32.320 was the same thing.

00:17:36.540 but,
00:17:37.000 but also those are inextricably linked
00:17:38.780 because it was the same foreign policy establishment
00:17:40.720 that worked to build up the Mujahideen in that war,

00:17:46.200 and you had a lot of these Wahhabists
00:17:48.060 that of course the Saudis had already kicked them out.
00:17:50.900 The bin Laden,
00:17:51.800 these guys said,
00:17:52.320 we don't want anything to do it.
00:17:53.140 They worked with them at first
00:17:53.860 and they kicked them out
00:17:54.640 and said,
00:17:55.540 we don't want anything to do with you.

00:17:57.060 then they eventually had set up shop in,
00:17:59.480 in Sudan and some other places,
00:18:01.120 essentially took over Sudan.
00:18:02.640 And then Afghanistan comes over
00:18:04.160 and the Taliban gets picked up

00:18:05.920 we're going to,
00:18:06.300 we're going to go over here now.
00:18:07.320 So you have,

00:18:08.560 it's still these remnants of the last war
