00:00:19.080 Conservative Thomas Lukasik trying to thwart the independence movement by creating a referendum
00:00:24.240 question of his own. Well, some information just came down this afternoon regarding this
00:00:28.920 and I think there could be an opportunity for people who want independence to use this question
00:00:34.260 to get independence. I think this might backfire on Mr. Lukasik. I'm no lawyer, but that's just how
00:00:40.140 I'm feeling. So let's take a look at this report. It explains everything and I'll come back and talk
00:00:44.560 about it just a little bit more. Alberta's Chief Electoral Officer has received and approved a
00:00:53.020 citizen initiative petition application from former Progressive Conservative Deputy Premier Thomas Lukasik.
00:01:00.220 With growing talk of separatism, Lukasik is attempting to thwart a separatist vote by undertaking a petition
00:01:07.360 for the province to declare its official policy is to remain within Canada. The approval comes before
00:01:14.620 Bill 54 takes effect on Friday, which would lower the number of signatures needed for a citizen-led
00:01:21.040 petition to trigger a referendum at 177,000 signatures. However, Lukasik is trying to prove Albertans would
00:01:30.340 reach the 600,000 signature requirements and vote on staying in Canada, as he argues provincial rules
00:01:37.900 don't allow for two competing petitions on the same issue. His petition question is a simple one. Do you agree
00:01:45.700 that Alberta should remain in Canada? Now that his application has been approved, Lukasik has 30 days
00:01:52.360 to name a Chief Financial Officer. On Wednesday, the Alberta Prosperity Project, which is wanting a

00:02:12.140 it's the same issue. It is, but one is for staying in Canada, the other is for leaving. But the thing
00:02:17.420 that I really want to know about, and we'll let the lawyers battle this out in court, is he's asking
00:02:22.160 people to vote on whether they want to stay in Canada. And that's what the independence movement is
00:02:28.060 doing as well. Do you or do you not want to be remain in Canada? That's what Lukasik's question
00:02:34.060 asks. What if people say, no, we don't? A majority say, no, we don't. And that's why we have to, as
00:02:41.680 independent-minded Albertans, pay attention to this. And we need to go out and get people to vote the
00:02:49.140 other way. And it needs to be clear before we vote on whether this is a vote for independence, because
00:02:54.180 I think it is. Mr. Lukasik cannot have it both ways. If people say, yes, they want to stay in Canada,
00:03:00.960 we stay. If people say, no, you want to get out of Canada, we stay. It can't be both ways. And it
00:03:06.860 needs to be made completely clear if this question actually gets on a ballot. So I think there might
00:03:13.180 be an opportunity here. Mr. Lukasik may have made a major fail here by allowing us to vote on
