00:02:34.520 child born or adopted outside of Canada if the parent was either born or naturalized in Canada
00:02:40.420 before the child's birth or adoption. On December 19th, 2023, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice
00:02:48.180 found that parts of the Citizenship Act relating to the first generation limit to citizenship by descent
00:02:54.380 were unconstitutional. The government of Canada did not appeal the decision, recognizing that the law
00:03:00.440 had unacceptable outcomes for Canadians whose children were born outside the country.
00:03:05.220 On June 5th, 2025, the government introduced Bill C-3, an act to amend the Citizenship Act to extend
00:03:13.520 citizenship by descent beyond the first generation in a way that is more inclusive and protects the
