00:02:09.880She talks to young people about what they want, what their challenges are.
00:02:13.400and I wanted to see if we could get any insight into young people and how to convince them to
00:02:18.120come to the Alberta independence movement. So I will be talking with Danica, a short segment of
00:02:22.680that interview that I did earlier this week. So what I want to do, by the way, here is Danica's
00:02:27.860website right here, youngalberta.com. So what I want to do to start off here, before we get to
00:02:32.960some of the events that are coming up, I want to address two things.
00:02:37.700Now, the first thing would be poll numbers. You saw this poll come out over the last couple of
00:02:42.360days. I think it's meant to discourage you. I don't think there's a reason to be discouraged.
00:02:47.780I think the number was around 14% would vote for option two or vote for Alberta to leave Canada.
00:02:54.020That's not what option two is about, but that's what the poll was about. I don't believe it.
00:02:59.280So what I want you to do, if you've been part of this movement for a while, think of it this way.
00:03:03.240Take yourself back to January of this year. Around the time we started collecting signatures,
00:03:09.740that the poll numbers at that point had us around 30%. Have half of the people that you know that
00:03:17.400were truly wanting Alberta independence changed their mind since January? Do you believe that?
00:03:22.660I know a lot of people in the independence movement. They're 100% in. Nothing could
00:03:27.660change their mind. I don't know a single person in the independence movement that has come to me
00:03:31.800and saying, John, you know what? Option one's a better idea. Nobody. So don't believe the polls.
00:03:38.700This is being done as a way to propagandize people, to influence people when it comes to the vote,
00:03:45.560not actually give you the poll numbers on how people will vote. Think of it that way. Now,
00:03:50.180the other thing I'm hearing about a lot from people is mail-in ballots. I get a lot of email
00:03:54.640on this. I'm hearing a lot of information and misinformation on this. It's Jason Levine

00:04:22.960of misinformation out there. So I talked to Jason and that's why he was calling this morning.

00:04:32.560of some of the misinformation and maybe make you feel better about what's going on. Now, don't get
00:04:37.440me wrong. I'm concerned about this. When you have six to 700,000 mail-in ballots, we want to make
00:04:42.240sure that they're counted properly. They are scrutinized properly. So we're putting together
00:04:46.940a live stream, hopefully Tuesday at six o'clock for this with another host. We'll have it on my
00:04:54.740channel, Jason's channel, and maybe another host with some guests coming in to talk about mail-in

00:14:33.060Over the last several months, people like you, people like me, third-party advertisers, and
00:14:38.360others have been trying to come up with some way of communicating with the different demographics
00:14:43.960out there, the different age groups out there, and each group, you have to have a bit of a
00:14:49.980different message. Talking to me at 61 about independence is different than talking to somebody
00:14:55.060who's 21. I don't have anything in common with them. As a matter of fact, I might as well be
00:15:00.800from a different planet when it comes to talking to young people today. So how do we communicate
00:15:06.720with young people when it comes to Alberta independence? That's what I wanted to find out.
00:15:11.120So I went to Danica Taylor, who runs youngalberta.com. Here's the website right here.
00:15:17.200and I spoke with her earlier this week, and here's a short segment from that interview.
00:15:22.660What is the best way to connect with young people? Now, I know that might seem like a
00:15:27.220stupid question. I am 61 years of age. I'm not meaning from a standpoint,0.99
00:15:32.220you know, I think I'm pretty good when it comes to technology, but, you know, I know that getting
00:15:37.160in touch with people digitally is a very good way of doing that with social media and whatnot,
00:15:42.560but what kind of message do they need to hear? We've talked about being peaceful. We've talked
00:15:48.600about online shaming. We want to make this a comfortable, we've talked about anxiety without
00:15:52.560making young people anxious. How do we connect with young people? That's a toughie, isn't it?
00:16:00.060It is. I think first of all, young people need to be able to trust the space that they're in when
00:16:06.160they're talking online. And so that's what we're trying to do with our podcast is no matter who
00:16:11.060interviewing whatever side of the issues that they're on um it's always respectful and it gives
00:16:16.180people a chance to actually like hear their neighbors out because they trust that there's
00:16:19.380not gonna an argument is not gonna erupt from this kind of thing or it's not going to become
00:16:23.140like really in your face um it just gives them a chance to like oh okay this is where the other
00:16:27.780side of the issue is coming from so i think they wherever you're connecting with them whether it's
00:16:32.500in person or online i think they just need to trust that like there's gonna be real communication
00:16:36.580here. Everyone's going to have a chance kind of to share their, where they're coming from and have a
00:16:41.380real dialogue. Do you know the difference between a hard sell and a soft sell commercial? You ever
00:16:47.700heard those phrases before? You do know. So I'm wondering, you know, I mean, a soft sell commercial
00:16:54.300for Alberta independence would be, are you interested in having a future where you might
00:16:58.820be able to afford a home? Are you interested in a future where you might have more money to spend
00:17:03.880on your family and friends, the hard sell might be the reason why we have to leave is because of
00:17:08.920the awful government in Ottawa. What one would be more, would young people connect with more?
00:17:15.160I think definitely the soft sell, because we have the hard sell all day on social media.
00:17:20.120We're surrounded by that from everybody. And so a soft sell, you know, it can be difficult
00:17:26.720sometimes to draw people into the dialogue, but I think ultimately that opens more doors.
00:17:30.660Do you think, do you think young people are risk averse?
00:17:34.920I think it depends, but in terms of like political conversation, it depends on the issue too,
00:17:43.140but I think in general, yes. Well, you see, so, but my, the way I'm thinking of risk averse here
00:17:48.620is this way. See, I see Alberta outside of Canada as something that I, is, is a better thing as
00:17:55.620opposed to having Canada or Alberta inside of Canada. But you might have young people who think
00:18:01.360it's a danger to go Alberta independent. So we'd rather not do that. I mean, you're talking about
00:18:06.800peace, people who want peaceful discussions and are anxious about things. Do they feel anxious
00:18:11.980about the fact that this is the great unknown that we're talking about here? But I'm not afraid
00:18:16.880of the great unknown, our young people. I think some people definitely are, especially if they
00:18:21.720are kind of more prone to feeling anxious about the future or they are experiencing a lot of
00:18:25.160difficulty, like economically, because yeah, like you said, there's not a lot of great information
00:18:30.260out there about what would Alberta look like outside of Confederation. And so, yeah, it can
00:18:37.420be scary. Yeah, it can be scary for sure. Do you think a lot of young people are going to vote?
00:18:43.580Very often they stay home. I mean, seniors are more likely to go out and vote than young people.
00:18:48.300I voted since I was 18 years of age and I voted in every election. I was engaged like that.
00:18:53.160young people have a lot of other things to worry about. Do you think a large percentage of young
00:18:58.020people, young adults are going to go out and vote on October the 19th? You know, I really hope so.
00:19:03.600It's really hard to gauge. And this is a place where if you're a young person listening, I would
00:19:08.180love to hear your perspective, like over on our platform, Young Alberta and kind of hear where
00:19:11.840you're coming from. So I'm really not sure, but I really hope so because young people, I mean,
00:19:16.200have a lot of political power. We have our voice really matters. And I think we can really shape
00:19:20.760our future by voting. So you're asking for people to contact you. How do they do that?
00:19:26.280So you can go on our website. You can go ahead and like suggest a podcast guest. You can suggest
00:19:32.000yourself if you want to come talk to us about, you know, your perspectives on various current
00:19:36.380issues. You can read our resources there. We also have social media. Right now we have Facebook and
00:19:40.620Instagram and we're working on getting like YouTube and X and things up. Something else I'd
00:19:44.640like you to check out is this interview right here. I spoke with Dennis Kalma from the Alberta
00:19:50.040Transition Council this past week about forward to freedom. Can Alberta afford independence? And
00:19:56.400after talking to Dennis, definitely we can. Another one of the ways they're trying to discourage
00:20:01.220people from voting for option two is to say we can't afford it. And that's not true. So check
