00:00:00.920 Okay, I'm standing here overlooking the Deerfoot Trail.
00:00:04.820 You can see the cars going by me at the bottom there.
00:00:07.380 That's the main highway that runs north and south through Calgary.
00:00:11.960 I'm in southeast Calgary and Dover.
00:00:13.640 You can see 17th Avenue that runs right across the highway over there.
00:00:17.900 I thought it'd be interesting to show you what a Chinook looks like.
00:00:20.900 Now, we're getting really mild weather here in Calgary.
00:00:23.460 It's about 9, 10 degrees right now.
00:00:25.600 You can probably hear the wind.
00:00:27.060 That's a Chinook wind blowing from the west.
00:00:29.460 And we're looking at downtown Calgary right now.
00:00:31.920 And off in the distance, you can see over there, the Rocky Mountains.
00:00:36.080 Now, my friends in Sarnia, where I'm standing right now,
00:00:39.440 when you see the Rocky Mountains, it's like seeing London.
00:00:42.460 And for people in Cornwall, it's like seeing Ottawa.
00:00:44.780 So that's about 100 kilometers away.
00:00:46.920 What happens is moist air on the other side of the mountains rises up and drops
00:00:51.840 out of the rain as precipitation or as snow.
00:00:54.620 And as it comes over the mountains, that dry air drops down and warms.
00:00:58.700 And it blows this strong wind through this part of southern Alberta and warms up the city.
00:01:03.640 I've seen it get as high as 16 degrees.
00:01:05.920 Now, when I say you can see the Chinook, you see along the skyline above the city there,
00:01:10.960 that's called a Chinook Arch.
00:01:13.000 And that cloud cover goes all the way south where we're looking right now, all the way north.
00:01:17.500 And if we look up this way, you can see Noah's Hill Park right here,
00:01:21.660 which is a large hill here in Calgary.
00:01:24.340 And up that way is towards Edmonton and Red Deer.
00:01:26.640 So that's a Chinook Arch, which is formed by air coming over the mountains
00:01:30.840 and causing that stationary cloud cover there, which is really interesting.
00:01:34.280 It's not moving at all.
00:01:35.720 It will not get any rain.
00:01:36.860 Even though it looks dark, you won't get any snow out of that.
00:01:40.540 It'll stick around for weeks at a time.
00:01:42.620 In fact, it's been rather mild here for at least a week and a half.
00:01:46.060 This weekend, we're going to see temperatures get up 12, 13 degrees here in Calgary
00:01:50.540 because of that Chinook.
00:01:51.720 So I thought it was kind of interesting.
00:01:53.220 It's a perfect day to show you what a Chinook looks like.
00:01:56.380 And it's a very mild day here in Calgary.
00:01:58.520 Thank you.
