00:00:00.000 hey everyone welcome back to the alberta roundup i'm your host rachel emmanuel i hope you're having
00:00:17.040 a great weekend so far and of course the best is right about to come so what we're going to be
00:00:21.680 taking a look at today on the alberta roundup alberta premier daniel smith has announced her
00:00:26.400 first cabinet as well the ucp government is calling on the alberta ndp to disavow someone
00:00:31.680 they've invited to speak at their party convention this weekend meanwhile daniel smith has apologized
00:00:37.200 and it's not enough for ndp leader rachel nolly as well another province has joined opposition to
00:00:42.000 the trio liberals gun grab scheme and finally just wait until you see what calgary wants to spend your
00:00:47.760 money on all that and more happening now on the alberta roundup okay everyone danielle smith has
00:00:52.560 announced her first cabinet as premier almost all of her ucp leadership opponents were included in
00:00:57.440 that cabinet list except can you guess that's right leela here was excluded from the list as you know
00:01:03.120 leela here was a vocal critic of daniel smith during the campaign she told ucp memberships at a liberal
00:01:07.920 event with prime minister justin trudeau and she was the first to fall off the ballot in the ucp
00:01:12.480 leadership contest jason kenny was also not given a role as you know daniel smith says she has not been
00:01:17.440 able to get a hold of him since she was crowned the victor of the ucp leader and alberta's premiership
00:01:22.000 and jason nixon who was briefly finance minister under kenny and was his house leader was also
00:01:26.080 excluded from the list but travis taves will maintain his position as finance minister
00:01:30.960 meanwhile brian gene who placed third in the leadership contest will be the minister of jobs
00:01:34.720 economy and northern development rebecca schultz who placed fourth she'll become the municipal
00:01:39.760 affairs minister she moved over from children's services and todd lowen you guys might remember
00:01:44.320 todd lowen was in the ucp leadership contest as an independent he was kicked out of the party
00:01:48.560 during kenny's tenure for criticizing kenny for his handling of the coven 19 pandemic he has become
00:01:54.080 the minister of forestry parks and tourism smith will also have two deputy premiers casey maddu and
00:01:59.600 nathan newdorf in a statement smith said there's a lot of work to be done quote our team will work
00:02:04.320 every day to gain your trust make bold changes and continue to build the most innovative entrepreneurial
00:02:09.360 and welcoming province in the world i want to thank our entire team for their tireless dedication to
00:02:13.840 albertans and we're looking forward to the days ahead okay guys the usb government is calling on
00:02:18.960 the alberta ndp to condemn a speaker they've invited to speak at their convention in calgary this weekend
00:02:25.280 the speaker in question is none other than manitoba ndp leader wab canoe who pled guilty to assaulting
00:02:30.160 a cab driver in 2004 along with refusing a breathalyzer test he also faced two domestic violence
00:02:36.080 charges following allegations from an ex-partner let's dive into the story a little bit in a statement
00:02:41.040 to true north earlier this week ucp mla dan williams said rachel notley should practice what
00:02:45.760 she preaches and condemn canoe as well as uninvite him to the party's convention quote rachel notley
00:02:51.520 never does the right thing when push comes to shove she is always the first in line to cast moral
00:02:56.400 judgment on others but when it comes to violent and abusive figures within her own party she has
00:03:00.960 nothing to say now let's dig into these charges a little bit more in september 2004 canoe pled guilty to
00:03:06.720 refusing a bretta man assault failing to report for bail supervision and reaching a court ordered
00:03:12.240 curfew then in 2017 tara hart of winnipeg told aptn the news outlet she was in a common law relationship
00:03:20.000 with canoe in 2003 when she became the alleged victim of domestic assault hart alleged that canoe
00:03:25.760 threw or pushed her across the room and she suffered rug burn on her legs and hands canoe denies the
00:03:31.360 assault the charges were stayed by the crown in 2004 meaning canoe's guilt or innocence was never
00:03:36.720 determined meanwhile alberta premier daniel smith has said her government will move ahead with
00:03:41.120 amendments to the human rights code to make it illegal to discriminate based on covet 19 vaccination
00:03:47.440 status she of course first signaled these intentions during the ucp leadership campaign
00:03:52.160 take a listen to her comments now so one of the things that will be coming through within the fall as
00:03:56.080 well is a change to the human rights code to make it a legal to discriminate against anyone on the basis
00:04:05.520 of their covet vaccination status now i'm recognized that there are still some organizations and some
00:04:12.320 businesses in alberta that is doing that and i just want to sort of give you fair warning that we are
00:04:19.440 going to be making a serious pivot in that regard and i would just ask if you would work with us
00:04:25.680 to align your policies with the direction that we want to go in alberta because we want to send the
00:04:30.560 message to the community and to the world community and to the investment markets that this is a place
00:04:35.920 that is open for business that this is a place that believes in freedom this is a place that believes
00:04:41.600 in free enterprise and this is a place where we are not going to be making arbitrary decisions that
00:04:47.120 are going to disproportionately impact the small and medium businesses in this province okay guys moving
00:04:52.640 into the controversy of the week daniel smith apologized this week for her past comments
00:04:57.280 on ukraine let's take a little look at what she said we have to go back to april when daniel smith was
00:05:02.480 very active on the social media platform locals in a april live stream smith said that ukraine should
00:05:09.680 maintain neutrality to end the war with russia quote i think the only answer for ukraine is neutrality
00:05:15.840 there are thriving nations that have managed with neutrality smith said in the live stream these comments
00:05:20.880 have people absolutely outraged but who greater than the ndp both federally and provincially in fact
00:05:27.520 take a listen to federal ndp mp charlie angus's comments in the house of commons earlier this week
00:05:32.400 so we see i mean if you want to talk this information the front face of the conservative
00:05:37.040 movement in canada right now danielle smith i mean oh my god where to begin you know we find out
00:05:42.720 now that she's been promoting pro-russian uh pro-putin separatist propaganda uh that's unacceptable
00:05:49.920 when we see the horrific death rates and torture and killing and rapes happening in ukraine and yet
00:05:55.440 she says that those who didn't want to wear a mask were the most discriminated against people in the
00:06:00.240 history of canada we need to see all leaders in this country standing up against putin because the
00:06:06.160 economic devastation that's happening around the world is impacting us here and we also from a basic
00:06:11.600 human rights point of view need to stay focused but again i mention it because this is the politics
00:06:18.480 of disinformation that the conservatives are opting for to to cover for the fact that they are not
00:06:25.440 delivering real results for people so when we came in and said we were going to double the gst tax credit
00:06:31.280 i just want to dive into angus's comments a little bit because he did get a couple things wrong
00:06:35.280 for starters daniel smith never said that the unmasked were the most discriminated against in canada
00:06:40.000 however if you ever went into a store without a mask on during the mask mandates whether it was
00:06:43.600 because you had a medical exemption or you forgot your mask or maybe you just didn't want to wear
00:06:47.600 one i certainly wouldn't know anything about that you might have felt like you were the most
00:06:51.520 discriminated person in canada that being said daniel smith said the unvaccinated were the most
00:06:55.920 discriminated people against in canada during the coven 19 pandemic and of course they were barred
00:07:00.880 from places of work places of worship from the gym from restaurants so those were actual comments i think
00:07:07.440 it's important to get that right i think especially when you're speaking in the house of comments
00:07:10.960 it's important to get things right but clearly that small detail wasn't important to angus now let's
00:07:16.320 continue on the comments didn't just come from angus but also of course from the alberta ndp
00:07:21.440 and the loudest of those voices was keyboard warrior herself rachel notley let's take a look
00:07:25.680 at what she said this week she was on twitter all week asking danielle smith to apologize i'd just
00:07:30.560 like to note that neither notley nor angus bothered to explain how smith's comments were evidence of
00:07:35.920 pro-putin pro-russia propaganda nonetheless whether it was simply because the pressure was too high
00:07:42.240 or because she actually felt bad about her opinions and changed her mind daniel smith released an apology
00:07:47.200 on tuesday in a clarification statement she said she previously made some ill-informed comments on the
00:07:52.880 war and that her views have drastically changed quote today i am reaffirming my condemnation of the
00:07:59.120 russian invasion of ukraine and offering my full apology for past comments now despite the fact that
00:08:05.040 rachel notley was on twitter all week begging for this apology it wasn't enough for her when she
00:08:09.040 finally got it in response to smith's clarification correction and apology notley said quote daniel
00:08:15.600 smith's comments about ukraine damaged alberta's international standing as a secure stable energy
00:08:20.400 provider in the long term that means less investment less jobs and less opportunity in our province
00:08:26.800 an apology is one thing now we need a plan to fix it i just want to break these comments down a
00:08:31.760 little bit i was just as surprised as you to see that notley has suddenly decided to become such a
00:08:36.160 staunch defender of alberta's energy industry perhaps during her tenure as premier she should
00:08:41.440 have approved a pipeline in alberta maybe then europe which is suffering from an energy crisis now
00:08:46.240 could have some of this alberta oil that she suddenly seems so eager to boast about i'd also
00:08:50.240 note that saudi arabia and until recently russia were some of the biggest providers of energy
00:08:55.040 throughout the world and they have a pretty terrible track record on actual human rights abuses but
00:09:00.880 it's daniel smith's comments on ukraine neutrality that are really going to cause alberta's energy
00:09:05.040 industry to crumble nevertheless daniel smith apologized and some of you most of you perhaps
00:09:10.080 all of you seem to think it was the wrong decision i'm going to take a look at some of
00:09:14.080 your comments this week underneath my article about daniel smith's apology she shouldn't have
00:09:18.080 apologized never apologize that's why you never apologize another user wrote i'm still waiting for
00:09:24.080 not head to apologize for nearly destroying alberta yet another wrote daniel smith needs to stick to her
00:09:28.480 guns and become a straight talking no nonsense taking sharp tongue judge judy type persona that
00:09:33.520 way she will rally her base while at the same time recruiting people to hear her brand and messaging
00:09:37.360 hopefully smith learned a valuable lesson not to cater to the woke mob across facebook and twitter
00:09:42.640 all the comments i read pretty much seemed to say she shouldn't have apologized and it was catering to
00:09:47.200 the woke mob at least among my viewership that's how people felt but i'm curious to hear what you all
00:09:52.000 think reach out to me let me know okay guys what we're watching in the weeks to come yet another
00:09:56.880 province has voiced their opposition to the true liberals gun grab scheme as you know alberta made
00:10:02.000 waves weeks ago when they announced that they will not allow their provincial rcmp or any other
00:10:06.720 policing resources to be used to act as confiscation agents for the true liberals gun grab scheme
00:10:12.560 shortly after that announcement alberta was joined by saskatchewan and manitoba now new brunswick has also
00:10:18.000 joined the chorus looks like the true liberals are going to have an awfully hard time confiscating those
00:10:23.200 guns it's been a pretty heavy show today we're going to move into something a little lighter to
00:10:27.600 end the show this is especially for my viewers in calgary your government wants to borrow 168
00:10:33.040 million dollars from the canada infrastructure bank for zero emissions electric buses a corporate
00:10:39.120 planning and financial services report on october 18th recommended that the executive committee
00:10:43.680 get first reading to a bylaw which would authorize the city to incur indebtedness with the cib for
00:10:48.640 purchase of the buses the report claims that these buses will actually improve the quality of life for
00:10:54.240 calgarians and provide opportunities to cleaner access communities the report also says the 168
00:11:00.000 million dollar loan will promote fiscal responsibility by providing the city with a flexible source of
00:11:05.280 long-term financing at a significantly below market interest rate sort of sounds like the argument that
00:11:09.840 women use when there's a piece of clothing on sale that they don't really need but they really want it
00:11:14.080 and you know if they buy it now while it's on sale they're technically going to save money for the
00:11:17.440 future because they would have needed to buy something at some point in the future full price
00:11:20.720 anyways let me tell you if you do that a couple too many times you will find yourself cancelling
00:11:25.200 a credit card i just want to talk about youtube for a second if you guys are watching this show on
00:11:28.960 youtube today most of you do please subscribe true north is hoping to hit 100k subscribers this month
00:11:34.560 we have i believe under 5000k subscribers to go last time i checked please subscribe if you like
00:11:39.200 the show or if this is your first time watching it you're not sure how you feel i'll win you over i promise
00:11:43.280 and i do actually take a look at the comments underneath the show pretty regularly there were
00:11:47.840 some funny ones the other day we're going to take a look at a couple of those right now all right under
00:11:51.920 my episode from two weeks ago there was a little bit in here about edmonton wanting to spend 170
00:11:56.320 million dollars on bike lanes that a bunch of you got pretty riled up about squeaky wheel wrote good
00:12:00.640 show this is becoming the go-to show for weekly alberta news i love the short format as a gen z with a
00:12:06.400 terrible attention span totally ruined by memes and reels i'm right there with you squeaky wheel peter
00:12:11.040 lafontaine wrote i'm a year-round bike commuter and i believe spending 20 or 170 million on bike
00:12:15.760 lanes is not justifiable the current city counselors are out of touch with reality okay everyone if you
00:12:20.960 want to contact me let me know what you liked about the show what you didn't like about the
00:12:23.680 show what you think i missed you can find me on facebook twitter and as of recently and back on
