Transcript

00:00:00.200 At the halfway point in the federal election, there have already been a number of surprises
00:00:16.640 and unusual events, not the least of which has been liberal efforts to keep my colleague
00:00:23.120 at True North, Andrew Lawton, from covering the Prime Ministers on the campaign trail.
00:00:29.440 But not only refusing to give him media credentials for the campaign, but getting the police to
00:00:35.360 hinder his efforts and actually remove him from one public event.
00:00:40.900 Quite apart from the optics of this for the liberals, I don't understand why police would
00:00:45.780 play along.
00:00:48.260 Lawton was following the liberal bus when he got pulled over by police and kept at roadside
00:00:54.020 for 15 minutes.
00:00:56.200 That's why he was doing nothing wrong, and stopping and detaining him in that matter
00:01:00.820 is an abuse of authority.
00:01:03.260 In the second instance, he had pre-registered for a public event, and after waiting in line
00:01:08.140 for an hour, Thunder Bay police approached him and asked him if he was Andrew.
00:01:12.660 He said he was, and was told he would have to leave.
00:01:15.800 He asked why, and the police said they didn't know why, but they were told to ask him to leave.
00:01:21.200 Now, I have been involved at some level in many campaigns.
00:01:24.820 I've even been responsible for event security at liberal campaign events in the 90s and conservative
00:01:30.960 campaign events since before Stephen Harper formed the government the first time.
00:01:35.820 I have never seen police remove someone who was unwanted.
00:01:39.820 That's the role of event security.
00:01:41.980 The police are only there if handcuffs are needed to take someone away to a wagon.
00:01:46.760 Where was event security?
00:01:48.640 Why would the police not tell whoever in the liberal campaign structure that it just wasn't
00:01:53.340 their role?
00:01:55.180 We made a big deal of it here on True North, and the liberals have since apologized to Lawton,
00:02:00.440 but they still won't give him accreditation.
00:02:03.560 Lawton is a former talk show host.
00:02:05.760 He has written for a number of mainstream publications, and appears several times a week here on True North.
00:02:12.640 How the liberals could possibly suggest he is not a bona fide journalist is anyone's guess.
00:02:19.480 After spending $600 million to guarantee favorable media coverage, my guess is they didn't want
00:02:25.140 to risk someone like Andrew asking hard-hitting questions that matter.
00:02:31.260 But the weirdness of things in this campaign didn't stop there.
00:02:35.760 There was the Green Party actually caught photoshopping a reusable cup and metal straw into the hand
00:02:41.220 of party leader Elizabeth May.
00:02:43.720 Perished to thought the champion of all things holy and green would be seen holding a single
00:02:49.000 use cup.
00:02:50.920 Then there was Time Magazine breaking a story of Trudeau in blackface purportedly at an Arabian
00:02:57.260 Knights themed black tie event at the exclusive private school he taught at in 2001.
00:03:03.860 As the story got picked up around the world, other instances surfaced of Trudeau in blackface,
00:03:08.740 including a video showing him making some bizarre ape-like gestures and seemingly with something
00:03:13.820 like a cucumber stuffed down the front of his pants.
00:03:17.620 It's hard to imagine anything more tone-deaf and racist as that.
00:03:22.400 Trudeau did apologize for his actions and then moved on, and the media let him.
00:03:26.580 But what the media did was spend many hours tracking down the man who gave the original yearbook
00:03:31.720 photo to time.
00:03:33.600 Seriously, outing and doxing the person that did that was more important to the Globe and
00:03:38.680 Mail and the CBC than actually covering what the Prime Minister did.
00:03:44.340 Then the PM arrives at a press conference by canoe to make a bizarre $2,000 allowance for
00:03:49.800 camping announcement for families.
00:03:52.500 The media cheered his awesomeness.
00:03:54.720 Remember when Stockwell Day arrived for a presser by CEDU in the 2000 campaign and how the media
00:04:01.680 was merciless in their criticism?
00:04:04.680 Seriously, if indeed this is intended for the low end of the income scale, how does a low
00:04:10.600 income family, perhaps solely reliant on public transit, benefit from this at all?
00:04:15.680 Or why do this after removing the Children's Art Tax Credit, the Family Sports Credit and the
00:04:20.600 Public Transit Tax Credit, but let's encourage families to go camping?
00:04:26.240 But none of the media present could be bothered to ask any of the hard questions.
00:04:31.480 Maybe if Andrew Lawton had only been credentialed.
00:04:35.860 For True North, I'm Leo Knight.
00:04:39.600 Unlike much of the mainstream media and the CBC, we don't receive any sort of government grants.
00:04:45.760 We rely entirely on you for our existence.
