Summary

In the waning days of the campaign, former US President Barack Obama tried to throw Trudeau a lifeline by tweeting an endorsement saying I was proud to work with Justin Trudeau as president. He s a hard-working, effective leader who takes on big issues. The world needs his progressive leadership now. And I hope our neighbors to the north support him for another term.

00:00:00.040 As the election campaign winds down it increasingly looks like Justin Trudeau
00:00:13.680 will lose his majority in the Canadian Parliament. Whether or not he'll lose
00:00:18.080 power remains to be seen. In the waning days of the campaign former US President
00:00:23.760 Barack Obama tried to throw Trudeau a lifeline by tweeting an endorsement
00:00:28.000 saying I was proud to work with Justin Trudeau as president. He's a hard-working
00:00:33.100 effective leader who takes on big issues. The world needs his progressive
00:00:37.480 leadership now and I hope our neighbors to the north support him for another term.
00:00:42.460 Trudeau promptly acknowledged the support saying thank you my friend and the
00:00:47.280 Liberal Party quickly sent out a fundraising message using the Obama
00:00:51.680 support as the reason to donate. It's a bit ironic given what we are seeing in the
00:00:57.880 US in the wake of the Mueller report and the first DOJ inspector general report
00:01:03.040 which suggests the Obama administration was likely the most corrupt
00:01:06.700 administration in our lifetimes with everything that went on behind the
00:01:10.420 scenes to spy on folks in the Trump campaign and it continued after his
00:01:14.500 inauguration for several months at least. It is expected that the IG will release
00:01:20.080 his next report on FISA abuse in the next few days. That is anticipated to be a
00:01:25.220 blockbuster. And then there's the investigation of John Durham whose
00:01:29.360 investigation into interference in the 2016 election is widening and will now
00:01:34.040 encompass the first few months of the Trump administration. It is widely
00:01:37.880 expected that indictments will result against senior members of the Obama
00:01:41.540 administration as a result. Will they reach into the Obama White House? We don't
00:01:45.980 yet know. President Trump said yesterday he believes they will. The Trudeau
00:01:51.500 administration has demonstrated its own corruption, the SNC-Lavalin prosecution
00:01:56.260 scandal, that resulted in several resignations of officials and then the
00:02:00.620 whole debacle with the demotion of Jody Wilson-Raybould and then the
00:02:04.440 resignation on principle of Jane Philpott and their subsequent exile from
00:02:08.640 caucus. So we have the most corrupt president of the United States endorsing a
00:02:14.600 corrupt prime minister so that seems about right. Birds of a feather and all
00:02:20.060 that. The question of whether it's appropriate for a former U.S. president to
00:02:25.220 inject himself into a Canadian election campaign is a whole other matter. Elections
00:02:31.000 Canada has restrictions on foreign contributions in our elections. President
00:02:36.260 Obama charges as much as five hundred thousand dollars to speak. Does his
00:02:40.700 endorsement then become an election contribution in kind as the thing of
00:02:45.140 value? That's a legal question I won't get into but the question of
00:02:49.820 appropriateness in and of itself remains. Whether Trudeau should have accepted the
00:02:54.320 endorsement so readily is also questionable especially given the cloud
00:02:58.380 the Obama administration is under with the separate IG investigations and the
00:03:02.720 Durham investigation expected to report in the near future. Trudeau might have
00:03:06.860 better been served by passing on accepting that endorsement. For True North, I'm Leo Knight.
