00:00:00.020 Hey everyone, welcome back to the Alberta Roundup. I'm your host, Rachel Emanuel.
00:00:04.760 We have some great stories for you guys today, unless you live under a rock.
00:00:09.160 You likely know that Tucker Carlson was in Alberta for two events this week.
00:00:13.840 I saw some of you guys there. I was privileged enough to be able to introduce the Premier at his event in Edmonton on Wednesday evening.
00:00:21.280 And of course, the left is melting down that he was here and at Alberta Premier Daniel Smith's involvement in the event.
00:00:27.480 And you guys might have heard that there was a shooter in Edmonton City Hall this week.
00:00:32.180 All that and more happening now on the Alberta Roundup.
00:00:44.220 Taking a look at our first story here, American journalist and pundit Tucker Carlson was in Alberta this week for two events, one in Calgary and one in Edmonton.
00:00:53.280 He was joined by Conrad Black, Jordan Peterson and of course, Premier Smith.
00:00:58.700 Tucker Carlson warned that federal policies like safe supply and assisted suicide are destroying Canadian society as is mass migration.
00:01:07.840 As he pointed to the long wait times at hospitals and the lack of housing we have in the country for everyone coming here and the people already here.
00:01:17.640 Take a listen to some of his comments now.
00:01:19.380 This is a destruction of you and your culture and your beliefs and your children and your future as a country.
00:01:28.140 Premier Smith was at both those events and at the event in Calgary, she promised to double Alberta's gas and oil production.
00:01:35.980 The Premier said Alberta will bring in new baseload natural gas power this year, which she said will stabilize the power grid, which we all know has been having some issues to say the least.
00:01:46.120 The Premier said, so I think we should just double down and decide we're going to double our oil and gas production.
00:01:53.660 Where else does America want to get its oil from?
00:01:56.020 Do you want to get it from Iran?
00:01:57.680 Do you want to get it from Venezuela?
00:01:59.560 Or do you want to get it from safe Canada?
00:02:02.060 I think that we can do a lot to make sure that the Americans know that we are here to provide energy security.
00:02:07.420 We are a great friend, great ally, great neighbor.
00:02:09.620 And we just need to get the political leadership to realize that we are a friend.
00:02:14.860 The Premier opened the panel by telling the audience and the media that just because she's on the panel doesn't mean she agrees with everything the other panelists have said.
00:02:24.780 The Premier was hammered for sitting side by side with the infamous Tucker Carlson at a media conference the next day.
00:02:30.540 Take a listen.
00:02:31.160 I do want to ask about your attendance at both of Tucker Carlson's events yesterday.
00:02:34.460 This is somebody who has been accused of defending white supremacy, spreading misinformation about the war in Ukraine, as well as making disparaging remarks about women.
00:02:41.980 So why did you believe that this is someone that you should be giving time and attention to?
00:02:45.980 Well, I take a wide range of media requests.
00:02:49.260 I've done, I've been told by my staff, 96 individual media events or interviews since I got re-elected, 24 press conferences.
00:02:57.260 And I don't require, I don't do a screening test to make sure that every person that interviews me matches 100% of what I believe.
00:03:05.820 And I don't expect that they're going to, that that would be an appropriate thing to do.
00:03:10.660 So I take a wide range of interviews from CBC all the way through to alternative media because my job is to get our message out about Alberta.
00:03:19.120 And I told everyone that I wanted to make sure that somebody who has a very loud voice in America knew that we were a partner in being able to provide energy security and energy affordability.
00:03:32.200 And I got that message out.
00:03:33.680 In one of the best moments of the event, Premier Smith told Tucker Carlson she's trying to get Federal Environment Minister Stephen Guibo fired and asked Carlson to put the minister in his crosshairs.
00:03:44.500 The next day, Guibo said he was targeted by the Tucker Carlson event and claimed he is the victim of political violence.
00:03:51.640 I mean, this goes beyond me and the fact that I was targeted last night at this event.
00:03:58.560 This increases political violence against everyone who runs for office in this country.
00:04:04.580 While Federal Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez claimed the event was an example of, quote, extreme right, end quote, infiltrating Canada.
00:04:12.420 Federal ministers weren't the only ones dismayed at Tucker Carlson's appearances in Alberta.
00:04:17.740 There was also many pundits who melted down online.
00:04:20.960 David Frum expressed his disappointment on X saying, quote,
00:04:24.060 The thing that's so sad is that I thought Canada had passed the point where Canadians had to make do with cancelled US programming as if it were fresh and new.
00:04:31.700 Former Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna also weighed in saying, quote, appalling.
00:04:36.920 Danielle Smith encouraging American right-wing rage farmer with a massive base to attack a Canadian politician.
00:04:43.960 Un-Canadian and dangerous.
00:04:45.900 And of course, Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley, who announced last week that she's going to quit once a new leader is elected, also weighed in.
00:04:53.100 Notley said Danielle Smith, quote,
00:04:54.560 Sat across from a man moments after he promoted white supremacy and disparaged immigrants.
00:05:00.680 In a lengthy post on X, Notley also said, quote,
00:05:04.120 The Alberta NDP strongly condemns everything Tucker Carlson stands for, and we stand strong against such division and hate.
00:05:11.200 We will never stop fighting for what's just, and continue working tirelessly towards a future where every Albertan lives the genuine experience of their inherent value.
00:05:20.220 And finally, in news that will shock you all, it appears that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an appearance at the Tucker Carlson event, and he might even be a fan.
00:05:28.560 Let's roll that clip for you.
00:05:36.480 Of course, that was the Prime Minister at a women's hockey game the day after the federal court ruled that his invocation of the Emergencies Act to quell freedom protesters was unreasonable.
00:05:47.260 I've never seen anyone clap like that in my life.
00:05:50.400 I think we should all be asking some questions about what is going on with Justin Trudeau to make him act in such a bizarre manner.
00:05:57.180 Moving into our next story here, I guess I could label this the controversy of the week, but that label seems a little light for the material.
00:06:03.200 There was an active shooter at Edmonton City Hall this week.
00:06:07.080 Early Tuesday mornings, shots ran out, and a Molotov cocktail was thrown inside the building, leading to its immediate evacuation.
00:06:15.560 Edmonton Police Services posted on X that they were investigating around 11 a.m.
00:06:20.020 And during the incident, Edmonton City Councillors were inside a scheduled meeting of the Emergency Advisory Committee,
00:06:26.320 and loud gunshots can be heard in a recording of the video.
00:06:29.660 We're going to play that for you now.
00:06:30.760 This is a risk as well that we need to continue to work on.
00:06:33.020 Pretty frightening stuff.
00:06:48.720 The building was evacuated, as I said, and no one was harmed during the incident.
00:06:52.880 The man, the police allege is responsible for Tuesday's shooting, said in a video just before the incident that he was, quote,
00:07:00.460 just tired of seeing the tyranny and corruption taking over our society and our lives.
00:07:06.140 In a four-minute video posted to X, Rebel News journalist and good friend of the show, Adam Seuss, identifies a man as Bizani Savar.
00:07:14.240 In the video, the man takes aim at wokeism, the housing crisis, multiculturalism, and what he describes as the genocide in Gaza.
00:07:22.400 In the video, he says, quote,
00:07:23.600 The video has not been officially linked to the alleged shooter,
00:07:41.900 but the man in the video is wearing the same security uniform as the man discharging the gun in City Hall.
00:07:47.640 Edmonton police confirmed that Savar is facing seven charges,
00:07:50.540 including reckless discharge of a firearm into a place,
00:07:54.240 knowingly possessing unauthorized firearm,
00:07:56.740 using, throwing explosive substances,
00:07:59.540 arson to property,
00:08:01.000 possession of incendiary material,
00:08:03.220 use of a firearm while committing offense,
00:08:05.440 and careless use of a firearm.
00:08:07.020 Moving into what we're watching in the weeks to come,
00:08:09.500 the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, most commonly known as CSIS,
00:08:13.440 is warning Alberta that it has become a very attractive target
00:08:17.020 for foreign entities to exert their influence due to the province's economy,
00:08:22.020 resources,
00:08:23.020 and large number of ethnic communities.
00:08:25.760 CSIS shared its findings at a presentation in Edmonton.
00:08:29.140 There were several political parties present,
00:08:31.520 as well as officials from Elections Alberta,
00:08:33.940 and those documents have been obtained through an access to information request filed by Postmedia.
00:08:38.620 The presentation said that foreign entities use,
00:08:41.920 quote,
00:08:42.260 clandestine or coercive,
00:08:44.180 end quote,
00:08:44.960 activities to influence Canadian society to their benefit.
00:08:48.660 CSIS found that Alberta is the most sought after place to enact these activities
00:08:52.320 because of its,
00:08:53.420 quote,
00:08:53.760 resource rich and high tech economy.
00:08:56.840 Documents read,
00:08:57.780 quote,
00:08:58.320 Canada and specifically Alberta are very attractive to many hostile foreign states.
00:09:03.400 Due to our resource rich and developed high tech economy,
00:09:06.340 geo-strategic interest,
00:09:08.000 particularly with respect to energy production and the Arctic,
00:09:10.940 and presence of large diaspora communities.
00:09:13.520 Alberta Premier Daniel Smith's press secretary
00:09:15.660 acknowledged that the Alberta government is aware of foreign influence
00:09:19.180 and particularly concerned about officials traveling abroad.
00:09:23.040 In a statement,
00:09:23.780 the press secretary said,
00:09:24.860 quote,
00:09:25.600 we take regular steps to interact with the appropriate agencies
00:09:28.640 to ensure our staff are educated on the tactics and methods used by foreign influencers.
00:09:34.100 And finally,
00:09:35.480 moving into our weekly comment roundup,
00:09:37.180 I'm sorry I missed it last week.
00:09:38.620 There was just so much material
00:09:40.260 and I know you guys like it when I keep my shows short,
00:09:43.320 so I just removed it from the episode last week,
00:09:45.420 but I'm going to dive into some of your comments now.
00:09:47.780 User Rick Sabey says,
00:09:48.980 Alberta may never recover from the NDP ideologues.
00:09:52.160 The damage they caused almost cost people severely.
00:09:54.920 That is true,
00:09:55.580 and I would argue with the high electricity bills that we're seeing,
00:09:59.280 it has in fact damaged people severely
00:10:01.140 and will continue to do so until maybe we see some more baseload power or something like that.
00:10:06.780 User JR said,
00:10:07.780 wow,
00:10:08.040 that is fantastic news.
00:10:09.880 Rachel Emanuel is absolutely the best journalist in Canada right now.
00:10:13.060 That is such a generous comment.
00:10:14.400 I don't agree that I'm the best journalist in Canada,
00:10:16.460 especially right now while I haven't been doing too much as I'm on mat leave,
00:10:20.060 but I do have a lot of respect for my colleagues.
00:10:22.660 I just want to give a quick shout out to Andrew Lawton.
00:10:24.900 He's of course a fan favorite.
00:10:27.140 And Cosman Georgia,
00:10:27.920 he is doing the daily brief right now and honestly he's one of the best researchers in Canada.
00:10:32.880 So definitely check out their work if you aren't already familiar with them.
00:10:36.220 And finally moving into our last comment here,
00:10:38.700 user at mama bear and two cubs said,
00:10:41.440 great news,
00:10:41.980 Rachel looking forward to seeing your show twice a week.
00:10:44.360 And of course that was just in response to the news
00:10:46.440 that my show is going to be going up to twice a week beginning in February.
00:10:50.120 For those of you who didn't see last week's episode,
00:10:52.260 we're going to be doing one episode midweek.
00:10:55.100 That will be an interview and then the regular show on Saturday.
00:10:58.700 So if there's any particular subjects you would like me to interview,
00:11:01.740 please let me know in the comments below
00:11:03.280 and I'll do my best to schedule them in in the coming weeks.
00:11:06.520 Okay guys,
00:11:07.020 that's all I have time for today.
