Summary

As proud as I am of being Canadian, I didn t get to choose this place. I was born here. And any time I meet people who got to make the deliberate choice, whose parents chose Canada, I'm jealous. Because I think being able to choose it, rather than being Canadian by default, is an amazing statement of attachment to Canada.

00:00:00.000 One of the great reminders to me, as proud as I am of being Canadian, as proud as I am of Canada,
00:00:07.000 I didn't get to choose this place, I was born here.
00:00:11.000 And I can almost take it for granted.
00:00:13.000 And any time I meet people who got to make the deliberate choice,
00:00:18.000 whose parents chose Canada, I'm jealous.
00:00:22.000 Because I think being able to choose it rather than being Canadian by default
00:00:26.000 is an amazing statement of attachment to Canada.
00:00:32.000 Which is why I always sort of laugh whenever you see people who are, not many of them, but intolerant
00:00:37.000 or think, oh yeah, no, go back to your own country.
00:00:39.000 Well, no, you chose this country.
00:00:42.000 This is your country more than it is for others.
00:00:45.000 Because we take it for granted, we default into this place.
00:00:48.000 And I think understanding that power of building a country
00:00:53.000 that is made of people who chose or whose ancestors chose to build a new life here
00:00:59.000 is really, really exciting.
