00:00:00.000 The Conservative campaign strategy when it comes to Justin Trudeau has been a
00:00:13.800 very simple one. To tell Canadians he's just not as advertised. He said he was
00:00:19.080 about ethics and integrity then the SNC-Lavalin affair. He said he was an
00:00:23.160 indigenous warrior and then you've had First Nations community that have looked
00:00:26.440 at him and said well I don't like how you treated that first indigenous Attorney
00:00:31.000 General. You have him saying he's a feminist and then all of a sudden two
00:00:35.000 very strong independent women who upheld the rule of law ended up getting fired.
00:00:39.940 One of them is Jane Philpott the Markham Member of Parliament who is in a very
00:00:45.280 tight race it sounds like based on a poll commissioned by her campaign. It was an
00:00:50.080 Oracle poll and it revealed that Jane Philpott is actually in the lead albeit
00:00:54.340 with a very sizable margin of error against Helena Jacek the former Liberal
00:00:59.920 MPP in Ontario and now the federal Liberal candidate. Now this poll and again I must
00:01:05.440 stress has a 5.6 percent plus or minus margin of error shows Jane Philpott at
00:01:11.460 38 percent while Helena Jacek is at 35 percent. The Conservative candidate is back
00:01:17.800 at 10 percent which is very shocking for a riding that used to have Conservative
00:01:22.840 representation at the federal level not too long ago. But what is interesting here
00:01:27.760 is that it reveals the independent candidate narrative is taking hold. Jody
00:01:32.980 Wilson-Raybould has seen a lot of success in her race in Vancouver Granville and if
00:01:37.780 you compare this poll to one that was done a few months ago back in June about an
00:01:42.460 independent Jane Philpott run it's monumentally better. That poll which was
00:01:47.780 done by Mainstreak had Philpott in third place and the Liberal in first place. But
00:01:53.580 it begs the question has Justin Trudeau got a woman problem? Has he got a problem
00:01:59.080 with the women voters that carried him to victory in no small part in 2015? I was at
00:02:03.760 a campaign stop of his in Markham Ontario. I was banned from covering it but was able
00:02:08.920 to catch up with Helena Jacek outside and I asked her this very question how does she
00:02:14.060 run for a party that has really put Jane Philpott, a very strong woman, under the
00:02:19.580 bust the way it has? Here's that exchange.
00:02:21.860 How do you think her being an independent now, her ejection from caucus, speaks to the
00:02:28.860 Liberal government or the Prime Minister's position on women as a feminist leader?
00:02:32.860 I think he is a true feminist. Obviously I am the Liberal candidate and I'm female and it's simply a
00:02:43.420 matter of getting nominated for your party, going through a very rigorous nomination process and
00:02:49.780 being declared the candidate. So Jacek says it's just an issue about whoever's the
00:02:55.300 nominated candidate. There's no broader narrative, there's no broader theme and
00:02:58.780 nothing about the treatment of Jane Philpott is transferring into the themes of the election campaign.
00:03:06.140 That's what Ms. Jacek said when we spoke about this on Wednesday morning. Well I guess we'll find
00:03:11.980 out on election day but the one thing that is interesting is that there seems to be a honeymoon
00:03:16.860 fading taking place about Justin Trudeau and it's just a matter of how many groups that really he did
00:03:23.020 rely on in 2015 will go through that. People that wanted electoral reform are not happy, people that
00:03:28.620 thought he was a race warrior are not happy, people that thought he was a feminist warrior are not
00:03:34.620 happy. With support from enough of these groups chipping away Justin Trudeau faces a steep battle
00:03:40.300 to be re-elected. For True North from Ottawa, I'm Andrew Lutton.
