00:00:00.000 it's wildfire season in canada and for what feels now like a fifth year in a row our country is
00:00:13.560 burning out of control at the time of recording 2.3 million hectares of land have been burned
00:00:19.040 this year and wildfires are particularly brutal right now in northwestern ontario wildfire smoke
00:00:25.200 is blanketing Toronto once again and reaching cities like New York, causing severe health risks
00:00:31.460 and turning Toronto into some sort of apocalyptic Mad Max set. The air quality deteriorated so
00:00:38.080 rapidly this week that Toronto, earlier in the week, actually had the worst air quality in the
00:00:44.660 world for any major city. But something is happening beyond the headlines regarding these
00:00:49.780 wildfires that nobody has been able to fully address yet. The number of recorded wildfires
00:00:55.400 in Canada has been decreasing since a peak in 1989, but the damage and area burned from these
00:01:03.320 wildfires is rapidly increasing and spinning out of control. Could this be the result of climate
00:01:09.400 change? Of course it could. We're not going to rule that out. Could these fires be man-made or
00:01:15.000 even arson we don't have the proof for that but obviously that is an option the likeliest source
00:01:21.880 from what i can tell from the data is that something has gone horribly wrong inside
00:01:27.640 canada's wildfire management and containment strategy something is broken here but regardless
00:01:33.800 of the source of these fires what is happening right now is clearly unsustainable it can't
00:01:39.240 continue we're going to get into all of that later on in the show the canadian government
00:01:43.320 and big tech find new ways every day to shut down and silence Canadian voices online. There's no
00:01:48.880 longer this big moment when you get cancelled. It's done so privately, behind your back, by
00:01:53.680 tweaking algorithms. The only way we can make sure you receive every episode of Ray Showed straight

00:02:15.460 video subscribe to the juno news youtube channel and the common question for the episode is this
00:02:20.540 have you been impacted by the wildfires or the wildfire smoke in your communities let me know
00:02:26.660 your answer in the comments below and let's get into it take a look at this video recorded earlier
00:02:31.040 this week from inside of a train in rural northwest ontario absolutely unbelievable this could 0.95
00:02:38.580 potentially overtake us here this is getting a little scary yeah holy shit okay 0.94
00:02:47.860 okay y'all need to hurry up here like seriously we're encased in flames now
00:02:58.900 another video here of boaters in northern ontario presumably evacuating from these apocalyptic scenes
00:03:06.500 straight out of a movie
00:03:15.540 now before we go any deeper into this i want to first publicize my gratitude to
00:03:19.380 the firefighters working day in and day out
00:03:21.860 to stop these fires and risking their lives to do so those men and women
00:03:25.460 battling the flames are the best of canada right now
00:03:28.180 god bless you all i don't know about you guys but i receive
00:03:31.780 so many weird spam messages and spam phone calls
00:03:36.420 But luckily, there is actually something you can do about it.
00:03:39.700 Here at Juno, we value personal privacy.
00:03:43.180 If you also believe that your personal information should stay personal, this will be worth your time.
00:03:49.160 Something most people don't realize is that your personal information is being bought and sold right now as we speak without your consent.
00:03:57.560 What really surprised me was how this worked.
00:03:59.960 There's a whole industry of companies called data brokers, and most of us have never even heard of them.
00:04:05.140 But they're constantly buying, collecting, and selling our data and our personal information.
00:04:11.260 And the crazy part is, you never signed up for this.
00:04:15.060 These data brokers pull your information from apps, websites, and public records,
00:04:20.120 then turn around and sell it to whoever wants it.
00:04:22.660 This could include your phone number, your address, even your email,
00:04:26.360 which contributes to all of those endless spam calls and texts and sketchy emails that you've been receiving.
00:04:32.280 This is where Incogni comes in.
00:04:34.020 Incogni is a service that automatically removes your personal data from the internet.
00:04:39.180 They go out and contact hundreds of data brokers on your behalf and request that your information
00:04:44.680 be removed.
00:04:45.780 And the best part about this, you don't have to do anything at all.
00:04:49.960 No chasing websites, no filling out endless forms.
00:04:53.360 They handle it all for you and continue the process so your data doesn't pop back up again.
00:04:58.720 So if you're tired of spam or you're worried about news scams or just don't like the idea
00:05:03.340 of your data being bought and sold without your consent, we recommend checking out Incogni.
00:05:10.220 You can scan the QR code on screen or click the link in the description below.
00:05:14.220 It takes just a couple of minutes to sign up and you can instantly start reducing your
00:05:18.620 online footprint.
00:05:20.020 We always talk about freedom here at Juno, but that also includes your digital life too.
00:05:24.640 If you care about privacy, this is one of the easiest and fastest ways to take back
00:05:29.240 control of your personal information.
00:05:31.680 But there is something that I have found from federal government data that is deeply alarming.
00:05:36.480 Take a look at this.
00:05:37.440 This comes from the federal government and the Canadian National Fire Database.
00:05:41.480 I've linked to this page in the description of the video so you can see it all for yourself.
00:05:46.500 Wildfires in Canada, as you can see, have actually been decreasing.
00:05:50.560 The peak year for wildfires in Canada was in 1989 when there were 12,000 recorded fires
00:05:57.780 that burned seven and a half million hectares of land.
00:06:02.000 In 2023, however, which I'm sure all of you remember,
00:06:05.800 there was a sudden spike and record in area burned.
00:06:09.540 In 2023, just 6,800 recorded wildfires
00:06:15.780 burned a staggering 17.6 million hectares.
00:06:20.500 So think about that for a moment.
00:06:23.080 Almost half the number of recorded wildfires
00:06:25.880 burned more than double the land in 2023 when compared to the previous peak year in 1989.
00:06:32.820 Is this not a glaring statistical anomaly here? Furthermore, before 2023, the area burned,
00:06:39.640 according to this graph, never exceeded total wildfires dating back to at least 1970. But that
00:06:46.780 suddenly changed and happened twice in the last three recorded years. This is obviously a huge
00:06:53.040 problem and deeply unsustainable. This obviously has devastating consequences for rural, remote,
00:06:58.860 and First Nations communities, not to mention the devastation to wildlife. It's all absolutely
00:07:04.340 heartbreaking. So is it as simple then to say that forest management practices are to blame?
00:07:10.860 According to an article written in the National Observer and reposted by the Ontario Association
00:07:15.680 of Fire Chiefs, in the 2025 provincial budget, Ontario allotted $135 million for its emergency
00:07:22.900 Forest Fighting Fund. One firefighter described that money is able to keep the lights on.
00:07:28.920 The province ended up spending double that, $271 million, according to the 2026 budget.
00:07:35.960 But that document penciled in just $150 million for this year. So the Ontario government did in
00:07:42.540 fact increase funding for emergency wildfire preparedness. But that same firefighter went on
00:07:48.680 to say that the lack of upfront funding doesn't allow us to do things preemptively. A crew might
00:07:54.220 have one helicopter to service a large area, and as soon as you get more fires, like more than one
00:07:58.680 at a time, you can't do anything about it. So the budget obviously did increase, despite what you
00:08:03.520 might be seeing on social media, but it's clearly not enough to prevent these fires from happening
00:08:09.480 in the first place and for doing the required and necessary preemptive work to stop it from
00:08:15.820 happening now the wildfire smoke which is blanketing over toronto as we speak and causing
00:08:21.780 severe health risks to people living in this city have now reached the united states and just like
00:08:27.820 in 2024 when americans were complaining about the canadian wildfire smoke it's ratcheted up to
00:08:33.740 another level this year take a look at this tweet from john james a michigan congressman who is
00:08:40.460 endorsed by the President of the United States and is running for governor, issued a final warning
00:08:47.440 to Canada to stop the wildfires. John James writes, final warning to Canada, manage your forests to
00:08:55.580 prevent these fires. American lungs are paying the price for Canadian inaction year after year.
00:09:01.340 Sovereignty comes with responsibility and the responsibility to prevent a foreseeable disaster
00:09:06.720 from crossing into another country's airspace has not been met so you have a michigan congressman
00:09:12.320 running for governor that's been endorsed by the president issuing a final warning to canada i
00:09:18.640 wonder what's going to happen if these wildfires aren't stopped anytime soon as you can see now
00:09:24.000 new york city is under a thick orange blanket of smoke and these wildfires are obviously disastrous
00:09:31.840 for the environment you don't need me to say that i sure hope you didn't because that should be
00:09:35.840 pretty obvious but listen to this statistic wildfires are producing so much carbon dioxide
00:09:42.880 that one bad wildfire season like we had in 2023 produces as much carbon dioxide as entire
00:09:51.040 countries large countries that are large emitters besides india china and the united states so the
00:09:58.000 2023 wildfire season alone in canada would have been the fourth largest polluter if the wildfire
00:10:04.560 season was represented as a country. Think about that. So you would obviously then think as the
00:10:10.520 next step that investing in wildfire prevention, making it easier to carry out prescribed burning,
00:10:19.240 making it easier to clear-cut certain parts of a forest that are susceptible to catching on fire,
00:10:25.740 you know, the basics of wildfire management. You would expect that that would be seen as a priority
00:10:30.960 given the extreme harm that wildfires cause to the environment since this government of ours is so
00:10:38.320 concerned about it. Investing in wildfire prevention would do more for the environment
00:10:44.560 than continuing to restrict pipeline development and continuing to maintain a tanker ban out in
00:10:51.460 British Columbia. But it might be actually that it's much easier to put in these climate
00:11:00.020 restrictive policies on natural resources much easier to do that than to invest in wildfire
00:11:06.840 prevention that it might be for example that the costs associated with actually carrying out the
00:11:17.020 work of preventing these wildfires which are devastating our country year after year are too
00:11:22.620 much it's too complicated it's much easier to just ban tankers out in British Columbia it's much
00:11:28.980 easier just to restrict pipeline development. And uncontrolled burns. We've previously talked
00:11:35.160 at length on this show about what happened in Jasper National Park and the restrictions on
00:11:40.800 controlled burning in Jasper that obviously played a serious role in the devastating fires
00:11:47.700 that happened there. The big shame here is that this is obviously becoming political.
00:11:53.380 Climate activists will immediately point to climate change as the sole culprit for these
00:11:58.260 fires. Others will point to bad forest management or budget cuts at a federal or
00:12:03.720 provincial level. I think the answer is probably somewhere in the middle, that
00:12:09.320 Canada's climate is warming up, that there are hotter, longer, and drier summers, but
00:12:17.640 we've also seen politics get in the way of proper forest management. And I'm
00:12:23.620 sorry but when you look at the data and it shows that wildfires are actually decreasing but the
00:12:30.240 damage is exponentially larger than it used to be something that doesn't make any sense here
00:12:35.280 something doesn't make any sense and it's devastating to our country like i said at
00:12:41.300 the beginning of the show no matter what is actually going on whatever it is is clearly
00:12:46.760 unsustainable so let's hope we can take this seriously and finally get to the bottom of what
00:12:51.960 is going on in order to stop this madness before it's all too late all right we'll leave it there
00:12:56.940 for this week a reminder that if you use my code junonews.com slash harrison return you can get

00:13:08.700 also a forward reminder to answer the comment question of the video have you been impacted by
00:13:13.640 the wildfires this year or just the wildfire smoke let me know in the comments below my name
00:13:19.300 is Harrison Faulkner and this is Ratioed.
