00:00:31.500 Mass immigration is driving up home and rent prices across the country.
00:00:35.980 Hello Canada, it's Wednesday, July 22nd, and this is the True North Daily Brief.
00:00:40.500 I'm Cosmin Georgia.
00:00:41.740 And I'm Jeff Knight.
00:00:42.680 We've got you covered with all the news you need to know.
00:00:45.740 Let's discuss the top stories of the day and the True North exclusives you won't hear anywhere else.
00:00:50.680 The Canadian Nurses Association's 2025 Code of Ethics for Nurses denounces what it calls
00:01:00.800 the, quote, white, European-centric foundations of modern medicine and compels nurses to adopt
00:01:07.680 a broad set of radical, progressive political beliefs as part of their professional duties.
00:01:12.860 Under the code, nurses must reflect on their, quote, professional power and privilege,
00:01:18.340 and to structure their practice around anti-racism, allyship, and, quote, culturally safe care.
00:01:25.240 Special attention must be given to equity-deserving groups, a category defined by race,
00:01:30.940 gender identity, indigeneity, and other protected traits.
00:01:35.040 Nurses are now required to acknowledge, quote, the historical and continuous impact that white,
00:01:40.500 European-centric models of nursing and health have on the perpetuation of anti-indigenous racism,
00:01:47.360 anti-black racism, and other types of racism.
00:01:51.040 The code also directs nurses to apply these concepts when assessing patient needs,
00:01:57.340 communicating with colleagues, and participating in institutional policy.
00:02:01.680 Under the social justice section, the code states that nurses must apply a planetary health lens
00:02:09.180 to their care.
00:02:11.140 The language goes further, instructing nurses to understand the, quote,
00:02:15.040 interconnectedness between nature, for example, human beings, plants, animal species,
00:02:21.700 and non-living entities, and to recognize the rights of nature and the planet.
00:02:27.520 Climate disruption is linked to patient outcomes,
00:02:30.580 and climate activism is framed as an ethical response to health inequality.
00:02:35.500 Regulated Canadian nurses are now required to align their conduct with a detailed set of political values,
00:02:43.680 among them social justice, gender ideology, indigenous belief systems, and climate activism.
00:02:50.360 The section on indigenous health further requires nurses to integrate, quote,
00:02:54.880 indigenous ways of knowing into care delivery.
00:02:58.460 These include ceremony, intergenerational trauma frameworks, and land-based teachings.
00:03:04.140 Nurses are expected to understand the ongoing effects of colonization and adapt care to align with those narratives.
00:03:11.940 Cultural safety in this model is defined by the client rather than the provider
00:03:16.460 and determined through the lens of tribal identity.
00:03:19.660 Even nurses who conscientiously object to certain procedures, including medical assistance in dying,
00:03:25.640 abortion, gender-affirming interventions, or supervised drug use,
00:03:29.820 must continue care until a substitute is found.
00:03:32.600 The code further emphasizes that personal beliefs must not interfere with access to services
00:03:38.560 and places responsibility on nurses to ensure continuity of care.
00:03:43.240 So, Jeff, Canada is in desperate need of medical professionals, including nurses, as well as doctors, etc.
00:03:52.700 And hypothetically, one could see a nurse who hopes to get into the field be potentially put off
00:04:00.340 by the politicization of nurses' associations, like the Canadian Nurses' Association's new code of ethics,
00:04:08.440 because it's so fully imbued with the woke, progressive ideology that has become prevalent
00:04:15.680 across different professional organizations.
00:04:18.300 So, Jeff, how might such a new code of ethics affect nurses or hopeful nurses
00:04:25.320 who disagree with some of the political directives contained within?
00:04:30.100 Yeah, Cosman. Nurses who disagree with the 2025 code of ethics political directives
00:04:34.580 could face significant professional and personal challenges
00:04:37.320 that may impact their ability to practice effectively.
00:04:40.700 Those with differing views, particularly on issues like climate activism or gender ideology,
00:04:45.100 might experience a sense of alienation or moral conflict, potentially leading to burnout or reluctance
00:04:50.640 to engage fully in patient care, as they navigate requirements that prioritize ideological alignment
00:04:56.080 over individual conscience.
00:04:58.280 This could prompt some to seek transfers to less ideologically demanding roles
00:05:01.960 or even leave the profession altogether, exacerbating Canada's nursing shortage,
00:05:06.200 already at 12% below target levels.
00:05:08.720 Professionally, dissenters could encounter disciplinary actions
00:05:11.820 if their reluctance to adopt these mandates is perceived as non-compliance,
00:05:15.920 especially under the code's emphasis on finding substitutes for objected procedures
00:05:20.000 like MAID or gender-affirming care, which might strain workplace dynamics and resource allocation.
00:05:25.760 The lack of clear guidance on balancing equality and equity could leave nurses vulnerable
00:05:30.040 to accusations of bias, creating a climate of uncertainty where they might self-censor
00:05:34.800 to avoid scrutiny from regulators or peers.
00:05:37.160 Additionally, the integration of Indigenous frameworks or planetary health lenses might alienate nurses
00:05:43.040 from diverse cultural or scientific backgrounds, risking legal challenges or union grievances
00:05:48.680 if they feel forced to adopt beliefs conflicting with their own.
00:05:52.640 And this could potentially lead to a fragmented workforce which is less able to deliver cohesive care.
00:06:00.620 Conservative leader Pierre Polyev criticized Canada's justice system over the potential
00:06:04.720 seven- and eight-year prison sentences sought by Crown prosecutors
00:06:08.280 for Freedom Convoy leaders Tamara Litch and Chris Barber.
00:06:12.220 In a post to Exxon Monday, Polyev criticized Canadian courts for what he viewed as a blatant double standard,
00:06:18.380 where violent criminals and extremists are let off easy,
00:06:21.180 while peaceful demonstrators like Litch and Barber face years in prison.
00:06:24.600 Polyev wrote,
00:06:25.720 Let's get this straight, while rampant violent offenders are released hours after their most recent charges
00:06:31.600 and anti-Semitic rioters vandalize businesses, terrorize daycares, and block traffic without consequences,
00:06:38.060 the Crown wants seven years prison time for the charge of mischief for Litch and Barber?
00:06:42.600 How is this justice?
00:06:44.420 Polyev's comments follow a post by Litch, who revealed on Exx that Crown prosecutors are seeking
00:06:49.260 seven-year sentences for her on a charge of mischief and an eight-year sentence for Barber on mischief
00:06:54.440 and a charge of counseling others to disobey an order.
00:06:57.320 Earlier this year, an Ontario court found Litch and Barber not guilty of most of the charges filed against them.
00:07:02.940 An Ontario Superior Court judge struck down four charges related to obstruction of police
00:07:07.540 and intimidation for both protest leaders.
00:07:09.740 The Crown's demands stand in stark contrast to the lenient treatment often given by courts
00:07:14.700 to repeat offenders for violent and horrific crimes.
00:07:17.780 For his own part, Polyev had, like the Freedom Convoy protesters themselves,
00:07:22.620 previously criticized COVID pandemic mandates and government overreach.
00:07:26.720 The Freedom Convoy, which began as a protest against federal COVID-19 vaccine mandates,
00:07:32.060 sparked a national movement and led to the historic and unconstitutional invocation of the Emergencies Act
00:07:37.420 by the Trudeau liberal government.
00:07:39.560 Considered by some observers the longest mischief trial in history,
00:07:42.900 the prolonged proceedings against Litch and Barber have drawn criticism for their cost,
00:07:47.780 with estimates suggesting the trial has cost taxpayers several million dollars in legal and court resources.
00:07:54.280 So, Cosman, what does the Crown's pursuit of harsh sentences for Litch and Barber say
00:07:58.440 about the politicization of Canada's justice system?
00:08:01.760 Well, it says that courts are becoming more selective about the concept of equal justice in Canada.
00:08:08.320 I mean, it does raise the question, do we even have equal justice in this country
00:08:12.980 when you see violent criminals, gang members, even sex offenders getting out on bail, house arrest, or just walking free?
00:08:22.020 We've seen this with stories just in the last month.
00:08:25.840 And I'd welcome you to go to Juneau News just to check out some of the crime reporting we've done
00:08:31.920 because it's outrageous what kind of sentences or what are being passed off as just sentences for some heinous crimes.
00:08:41.200 Meanwhile, the government wants to throw peaceful protesters like Kamara Leach and Chris Barber in jail
00:08:47.180 for seven or eight years over mischief charges.
00:08:51.900 And as the article points out, a reminder to everybody is that most of the charges they were facing
00:08:58.480 related to the Freedom Convoy were actually dropped.
00:09:02.360 It's just two remaining ones that they have to essentially get a sentence on.
00:09:06.880 So, just look at what's been happening.
00:09:09.660 Recently, in Montreal, there was a convicted killer with a high chance of reoffending,
00:09:15.020 was paroled, and then he's now accused of murdering again.
00:09:20.320 We saw just in Toronto now that a 14-year-old stabbed a grandmother who died from her injuries in a parking lot.
00:09:29.320 And there's reports that he did it while he was out on bail.
00:09:32.380 But Leach and Barber, two peaceful protesters, the Crown wants to lock them up for nearly a decade,
00:09:39.320 as if this trial hasn't already dragged on enough.
00:09:42.120 And I think Polyev nailed a certain aspect of this when he tweeted, you know,
00:09:47.700 violent offenders walking free, and the Crown wants seven years for mischief.
00:09:52.980 How is that justice?
00:09:54.120 Because it's not justice.
00:09:55.460 It's politics.
00:09:56.840 And this entire trial has been driven by a certain push from the government and Crown prosecutors,
00:10:04.400 because they know that the invocation of the Emergencies Act was not constitutional.
00:10:12.340 It was not a proportional response to what was going on.
00:10:15.520 And the whole point of this was to make an example out of individuals who stood up to government overreach
00:10:23.980 and, quite frankly, draconian policies that were implemented during COVID-19.
00:10:31.200 A new federal study has found that mass migration is raising Canada's housing and rent prices.
00:10:41.180 With researchers linking population inflows to more than a fifth of price increases in some cities,
00:10:47.300 researchers found a clear pattern.
00:10:49.020 Quote, municipalities experiencing larger increases in house values also saw a more rapid increase in new immigrant populations.
00:10:57.780 In larger urban centers with populations exceeding 100,000 people,
00:11:02.320 that collectively attracted more than 80% of new immigrants, the impact was even harder.
00:11:08.440 Quote, in 53 municipalities with a population exceeding 100,000,
00:11:13.160 the rise in new immigrants accounted for 21% of the overall increase in median house values
00:11:18.900 and 13% of the increase in median rents, the report found.
00:11:23.460 Nationwide, the influx of newcomers within a five-year period was associated with, quote,
00:11:28.860 11% of the rise in both median house values for owner-occupied properties and median monthly rental rates.
00:11:36.600 The Bank of Canada has previously issued warnings on the negative effects of mass migration.
00:11:42.820 In its monetary policy report published in July 2024, it said immigration had created, quote,
00:11:49.780 inflationary pressures in the housing market.
00:11:52.760 The Bank of Canada also published a report in May of this year warning that Canada's economy
00:11:57.880 has become increasingly reliant on low-wage mass migration of temporary workers from India and the Middle East.
00:12:04.740 Despite the mounting data, left-leaning politicians have rejected the clear connection between immigration and housing affordability.
00:12:13.800 New Democrat MP Jenny Kwan accused immigration skeptics and the government of promoting a, quote,
00:12:20.340 racist attitude towards migrants.
00:12:23.700 Quote, all of a sudden, the government decides that because of the housing crisis,
00:12:28.700 the most convenient thing for them to do is blame the newcomers, Kwan told reporters on June 5th.
00:12:35.000 The Department of Immigration report titled Immigration and Housing Prices Across Municipalities in Canada
00:12:41.240 analyzed 15 years of municipal data and concluded that new immigrants accounted for between 11% and 21%
00:12:49.140 of the increase in housing prices and rents nationwide.
00:12:53.240 Jeff, when we have data that's this clear put out by the federal government itself,
00:13:00.420 will this force Ottawa to admit that mass migration has hurt Canadians' ability to afford homes
00:13:10.480 and potentially jeopardized the ability of future generations to have their own place?
00:13:17.300 Yeah, Cosman, the likelihood of Ottawa actually admitting that mass migration is hurting Canadians'
00:13:22.140 ability to afford homes, despite the new federal study released today, remains low in the near future
00:13:28.660 due to entrenched political dynamics surrounding the mass migration issue.
00:13:32.340 The government's current minority status relies on NDP support, where figures like Jerry Kwan
00:13:36.980 have framed immigration critiques as discriminatory, making any admission politically costly.
00:13:42.560 Historical trends show a reluctance to pivot, with past economic warnings sidelined
00:13:47.180 in favor of growth-focused narratives, especially as trade negotiations with the U.S. loom large,
00:13:52.840 demanding a unified front.
00:13:54.480 Public sentiment, while increasingly frustrated, lacks the critical mass that's needed.
00:13:58.980 Recent protests have been localized, not nationwide, leaving policymakers insulated unless a major
00:14:04.700 electoral threat emerges, such as a conservative surge tied to housing issues.
00:14:09.120 Without a catalyst like a coalition collapse or a dramatic policy shift from key allies,
00:14:13.920 Ottawa is likely to deflect rather than confront the issue head-on.
00:14:20.580 That's it for today, folks.
