00:00:00.000 The UN does an about-face after a report calling natural resource development in Canada a racist.
00:00:05.020 Justin Trudeau is the king of corporate welfare, but does it actually help?
00:00:08.540 Iran continues to lie about the downed Ukrainian Airlines flight,
00:00:12.160 plus a huge snore storm buries Newfoundland,
00:00:14.920 but the community comes together to help.
00:00:16.660 I'm Candice Malcolm and this is The Candice Malcolm Show.
00:00:23.960 Hi everyone, thank you so much for tuning into the program.
00:00:26.680 Hopefully you are surviving the huge winter storms that have been happening all over the country,
00:00:31.200 particularly folks out in Newfoundland.
00:00:33.260 The footage from those storms is just absolutely incredible,
00:00:36.680 and we're going to talk about it later in the show.
00:00:38.620 But first, this is a story that we covered on the show last week,
00:00:41.600 and it is just so absurd that it deserves to be covered again,
00:00:44.900 this time from the opposite perspective.
00:00:47.180 So this story came out, it was in the National Post,
00:00:49.520 First Nations chief blast condescending UN anti-racism directive
00:00:54.320 that called for Pipeline to be shut down.
00:00:56.880 So if you recall, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
00:01:01.140 called for three large-scale natural resource development projects in Canada to be halted.
00:01:06.900 The rationale, they said, was that it was bad for Indigenous and Aboriginal Canadians.
00:01:11.160 The only problem is that this UN committee didn't actually study the problem.
00:01:15.080 They didn't even look into it.
00:01:16.080 They said that investigative journalism is not part of their mandate,
00:01:19.200 and they didn't bother to talk to Indigenous people in Canada.
00:01:22.800 So a Canadian First Nations chief is slamming that recent report,
00:01:26.220 basically because the UN didn't even look into the situation properly.
00:01:30.400 So the project that they condemned, the UN called for the immediate shutdown of three projects,
00:01:35.460 including the coastal gasoline natural gas pipeline.
00:01:38.220 And what they didn't learn, what they didn't bother to study or find out,
00:01:41.700 was that that project actually has the sign-on,
00:01:44.640 that 20 different Indigenous communities have signed on to that agreement.
00:01:48.440 So they're in support of it.
00:01:50.260 Many other First Nations groups in Canada are supportive.
00:01:53.120 So in an interview with Reuters last week,
00:01:56.480 the chair of this UN committee, Norahdin Amir,
00:01:59.080 admitted that the committee did not study First Nations views towards the project,
00:02:02.620 saying he did not know that most communities supported it.
00:02:05.920 I did not know that most First Nations agreed on that, he told Reuters.
00:02:09.220 This is something new that came to my understanding.
00:02:12.020 He further said that he did not seek out further information on the project
00:02:14.680 because the role of the committee does not involve investigative work.
00:02:18.520 That begs the question, what is the role of the committee then?
00:02:21.360 What is the role of the committee?
00:02:22.340 You've made up this United Nations Committee on Racism,
00:02:24.740 where you condemn different things in a peaceful, free country like Canada
00:02:29.960 for supposedly being racist without studying it, without looking at it.
00:02:33.360 And then when you get kind of called out for taking the wrong position
00:02:36.920 and not even representing the views of the people who you claim to represent,
00:02:40.660 you just shrug your shoulders and you say,
00:02:42.240 well, that's not our role. Our role isn't to actually investigate what we're studying.
00:02:45.740 Our role is to just put out these ridiculous reports.
00:02:48.000 This, in a nutshell, is a problem with the United Nations.
00:02:50.420 They are an organization that's mandate is basically just to demonize Western countries,
00:02:56.740 demonize free countries like Canada, pit people against each other.
00:03:00.280 And again, they shouldn't be butting their nose into our business.
00:03:03.420 There's real racism in the world. There are real problems in the world.
00:03:06.140 And they're not in Canada. They're not deriving from resource development projects.
00:03:10.200 Okay, let's move on. I wrote a column on this topic in the Toronto Sun,
00:03:14.140 so you can catch that over at thetorontosun.com.
00:03:18.160 You know, it's crazy. Justin Trudeau is the king of corporate welfare.
00:03:21.120 He's handing out money left, right, and center, of course, especially to, you know,
00:03:24.620 big firms that are based in Montreal and based in Quebec, where he has a chummy relationship.
00:03:29.240 But when you actually study the outcome of where this money goes
00:03:32.180 and what happens to those companies, the picture isn't so rosy.
00:03:35.300 So there's a couple of really major examples in the news recently of basically these companies
00:03:40.560 pairing with the Canadian government, teaming with the Canadian government,
00:03:43.440 getting corporate welfare, taking taxpayer dollars,
00:03:46.380 and then the result is not exactly what you want if you are running a business.
00:03:50.740 So let's first look at Bombardier.
00:03:52.820 Bombardier is a Montreal-based aerospace manufacturing company.
00:03:56.480 In 2017, the Trudeau government bailed out Bombardier with a $373 million federal loan.
00:04:02.280 At the same time, the Liberal government in Quebec also provided a taxpayer-funded bailout
00:04:06.520 to the tune of $1 billion.
00:04:08.720 So 18 months after that bailout, the Bombardier announced that it was cutting 5,000 jobs.
00:04:14.580 3,000 of those happened to be in Canada.
00:04:16.500 So why is the, you know, taxpayers in Quebec and federal taxpayers giving a company $1.34 billion
00:04:23.420 to turn around and have them lay off 3,000 Canadian employees?
00:04:28.240 Well, it went from bad to worse.
00:04:30.260 So Bombardier announced their earnings for 2019.
00:04:35.780 It turns out the revenues dropped.
00:04:37.100 They failed to meet the targets.
00:04:39.020 And the stock price plummeted by one-third of its value in a single day.
00:04:43.340 So that is the largest drop.
00:04:45.280 Bombardier's stock is now at an all-time low.
00:04:47.900 So again, where's the return of investment?
00:04:50.300 Canadians invested into this company against their will.
00:04:52.600 It was a bad investment.
00:04:54.340 And now Bombardier is flailing.
00:04:57.780 And, you know, the same thing can be said with Loblaws.
00:05:00.660 Loblaws, you remember about a year and a half ago, Catherine McKenna, the then environment
00:05:05.680 minister, did this stupid bailout announcement with Loblaws.
00:05:09.100 You know, Loblaws is the biggest grocery store in Canada.
00:05:11.220 It is a huge multi-billion dollar company.
00:05:15.040 And yet they had to get a bailout from the Canadian government to build some kind of a
00:05:19.680 new, you know, environmentally friendly refrigerator system.
00:05:23.480 Makes absolutely no sense.
00:05:25.080 For whatever reason, Canadian taxpayers shelled over $12 million to this company.
00:05:29.960 Well, guess what?
00:05:31.080 Guess what?
00:05:32.040 The company just announced that it was laying off 700 workers and closing two distribution
00:05:36.260 centres in Quebec and Ontario, noting that the positions were replaced by new technology
00:05:41.100 and automation.
00:05:42.520 So was the technology that the Canadian taxpayers gave to Loblaws, did that contribute to the
00:05:48.120 layoffs?
00:05:48.560 I don't know.
00:05:49.280 But still, the idea that these big companies are taking money from the Canadian government
00:05:53.080 and then turning around and laying off Canadians is just, there's no excuse for it.
00:05:57.600 It's the worst example of crony capitalism.
00:06:00.500 You know, the Trudeau government is supposedly, you know, they get accused of being sort of like
00:06:05.280 neoliberal or free market.
00:06:06.940 They're not free market.
00:06:07.760 They have their hands in all these different pockets.
00:06:10.340 They want to sort of take credit for companies that are successful.
00:06:14.000 And they do so by tacking on these little, you know, handouts to their friends.
00:06:17.620 You know, it's not based on which companies are the best or which companies, you know,
00:06:22.060 are the most deserving somehow of money from the taxpayers.
00:06:25.180 But it's all based on lobbying and whose lobbyists are friends with who and who has the
00:06:29.400 most friends in the liberal government.
00:06:31.920 Well, you know, again, partnering with the government makes no sense.
00:06:35.020 And the payout isn't very good.
00:06:37.060 And you can say the same thing about the media.
00:06:39.300 We reported this last week as well.
00:06:41.200 CBC's viewership is at an all-time low.
00:06:43.660 They have less than 1% of Canadians are now watching their evening news program.
00:06:49.100 Their ad revenue fell by 37%.
00:06:51.560 CBC National News Network, which is their dedicated news channel, has just a 1.4% market share.
00:06:58.580 The total CBC platform across all television markets is 5%.
00:07:03.360 So the CBC is getting more money than they ever have before, $1.2 billion in tax money.
00:07:08.580 And they have no audience.
00:07:09.780 Their audience is diminishing and falling apart.
00:07:12.820 And yet we're paying more and more money to bail out this big giant.
00:07:16.300 And of course, the CBC is again coming to the Trudeau government saying that they need
00:07:20.100 even more money, even more money.
00:07:22.140 This is just, again, terrible example of the government interfering in the free market and
00:07:27.260 not even doing it in a very good way, not even doing it in a way that somehow creates
00:07:32.240 benefit.
00:07:32.840 Like the companies that partner with the government are doomed to fail, which is why the government
00:07:37.420 shouldn't be involved.
00:07:38.280 If you're a business owner, you should run.
00:07:40.160 You should not be like lining up or interested in any kind of government handout or bailout.
00:07:44.260 You should be turning the opposite direction and saying, I don't want to partner with the
00:07:47.280 government because of this track record.
00:07:48.980 I know a lot of media companies out there are going to the federal government.
00:07:52.320 They want to have part of that $595 million slash fund for journalists.
00:07:58.820 Well, True North would never take a penny from the Trudeau government or from any government
00:08:02.740 because it is a lose-lose situation.
00:08:06.160 OK, let's move on.
00:08:07.440 So Iran continues to lie about the downed plane that went down in Tehran, killing everyone on
00:08:14.180 board, including some 57 or 58 Canadians.
00:08:17.500 Most of the people on board of that plane, by the way, 138, according to the Globe and
00:08:21.480 Mail, were on their way to Canada.
00:08:23.080 So whether they were Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or they were visiting family members
00:08:26.960 in Canada, many, many people on that plane had an access or connection to Canada.
00:08:32.200 So Iran is basically just going back and forth.
00:08:35.440 At first, they said that they would release the black box from the flight.
00:08:39.400 And that was sort of what the international community was calling for.
00:08:42.280 Well, the most recent news we hear is that they're no longer handing over that black box,
00:08:46.340 that they are refusing to.
00:08:48.120 If the plane was shot down, as the Iranian regime has now maintained, this is the one
00:08:53.160 thing they've kept straight for the past week.
00:08:54.960 You remember at first that they lied and said that it was engine problems.
00:08:57.960 Then they lied again, saying that someone else must have shot down the plane.
00:09:01.420 Then they finally came to their senses and admitted the truth that they shot down the plane.
00:09:05.220 But they said it was an accident.
00:09:06.980 Well, if it really was an accident, why wouldn't you just turn over the black box?
00:09:10.080 What do you have to hide?
00:09:11.680 The fact that they are trying to hide something really, really begs the question of, you know,
00:09:17.180 what really happened that night?
00:09:19.080 And again, it shows just how evil this regime really is.
00:09:24.040 Well, perhaps that's why a recent survey found that 7 in 10 Canadians believe that the truth
00:09:29.420 about that night and that plane crash will never be found.
00:09:32.480 That they just don't have any faith in the Iranian regime or the international community's
00:09:38.760 ability to deal with that rogue regime.
00:09:41.560 So 7 out of 10 Canadians felt that we would never get the full story, that we'd never
00:09:46.080 really find out, well, Iran is really pushing that because they are refusing to cooperate
00:09:50.980 in any way.
00:09:52.640 Okay, let's move on.
00:09:53.660 Final story here.
00:09:54.480 There was a huge, huge storm in Newfoundland.
00:09:58.300 Record snowfall.
00:09:59.180 Basically, they had to call in the Canadian Armed Forces to help.
00:10:03.600 If you look at some of the photos that have come up on social media, you see you open your
00:10:07.100 front door and there's nothing but snow.
00:10:08.640 It's a wall of snow.
00:10:10.160 You know, you don't even know where to, I don't even know where to start to dig myself
00:10:14.220 out for something like that.
00:10:16.140 Okay, so St. John's was in a state of emergency after Newfoundland was hit with a record-breaking
00:10:20.280 snowfall that piled more than two feet of snow onto some part of the provinces and wind
00:10:25.240 that was pushing that snow around and drifted several feet high.
00:10:28.000 So many communities are dealing with power outages and there are just tons and tons of
00:10:33.380 reports, you know, like I said, people not being able to find their cars because they're
00:10:36.600 completely buried by snow, not being able to get out of their homes.
00:10:39.860 But I think my two favorite stories that I heard about over the weekend were both to
00:10:45.320 do with women giving birth or about to give birth.
00:10:48.260 So this is something I heard about on the radio and I guess Mark Critch, who's a CBC comedian,
00:10:52.320 he also heard about it.
00:10:53.180 He said, radio just reported that a pregnant woman in labor drove herself to the hospital
00:10:59.060 on a ski-do.
00:11:00.560 I hope they're okay.
00:11:01.980 I'm pretty sure the child will grow up to be the future premier that will lead us to
00:11:05.420 prosperity.
00:11:06.460 Wow.
00:11:07.020 This is like the most Canadian story you can imagine.
00:11:09.120 A woman goes into labor, needs to get to the hospital.
00:11:11.920 There's two feet of snow outside.
00:11:13.560 So she goes on a ski-do like a champ.
00:11:16.020 Another story, similar, not quite similar, but another story about a baby being born in
00:11:22.940 the midst of this crazy, crazy storm out in Newfoundland is the Snow family.
00:11:27.760 Their actual last name is Snow.
00:11:30.140 So Levi Jacob Snow was born during the height of the raging blizzard that knocked out power
00:11:34.320 and hit eastern Newfoundland so hard that the military has been called in.
00:11:38.500 It was 1041 on Friday, about the same time that a record was broken at St. John's International
00:11:44.560 Airport for the highest snowfall amounts in a single day.
00:11:47.940 So the father asked for some help digging out their St. John's home on social media,
00:11:52.720 and by Sunday, 10 to 15 good Samaritans were outside his house with shovels.
00:11:58.520 The couple faced an eight-foot snow drift.
00:12:02.240 There's eight feet of snow outside their door.
00:12:04.360 Well, thank goodness for these good Samaritans that came and helped that baby get inside a warm
00:12:09.980 house after leaving the hospital.
00:12:12.020 That's the kind of stuff you love.
00:12:13.140 Canadians coming together to help each other in the worst of the worst of the winter weather.
00:12:17.420 Okay, I'm going to leave it at that.
00:12:18.480 Thank you so much for tuning in, and we will be back again on Wednesday.
