00:00:00.000 so what are the latest developments on the anti-government protests taking part in the
00:00:09.380 streets of cuba right now many thousands of people taking to the streets and saying no
00:00:14.260 to the communist dictatorship of cuba what are those latest details well i'd love to fill you
00:00:20.020 in on them i'd love to tell you that people are chatting about it in coffee shops across canada
00:00:25.300 and with their neighbors and say oh did you hear the news here's the latest in cuba oh yeah this
00:00:29.660 story really matters and so forth i would love to tell you all of that but that's not what i'm
00:00:33.860 hearing what i'm hearing is crickets relatively speaking in terms of the media coverage in terms
00:00:39.900 of the political discussion the discussion among the elite classes and just the basic sense of
00:00:45.360 urgency and amplification behind this story it is remarkable that you have many thousands of people
00:00:52.160 taking the streets saying enough is enough to so much of what's going on in cuba right now
00:00:57.020 you've got this genuine call for freedom for liberty for democracy and then you got people
00:01:02.900 in countries like canada kind of turning a blind eye to it not really concerned about it the story
00:01:08.860 just not being amplified what on earth is going on here because there are so many other examples of
00:01:14.720 stories that are unfolding anywhere in the world the minutiae of american politics for instance and
00:01:19.440 every little bit of it every step by step we're fed here in canada by by u.s media by our media
00:01:25.820 everybody talking about it non-stop unpacking on social media everybody can tell you every little
00:01:30.960 detail of these stories when it's sort of thrust upon you as an urgent story that must be amplified
00:01:35.700 but here when it comes to what's going on in cuba potentially a historic process right now you're
00:01:41.660 hearing relatively little little bit of coverage about the basics but that is it not much from
00:01:47.220 political leaders either i mean prime minister justin chateau he initially offered this this very
00:01:51.820 weak statement on it he sort of had to be shamed into condemning the violent crackdowns that were
00:01:56.780 going on people have actually been killed in the responses to these protests and well over a hundred
00:02:02.140 people are are missing they've been disappeared it's unclear what's happened to them i mean this is
00:02:06.880 something that the world should be watching because one of the things that fresh press freedom gives
00:02:12.400 you in these shaky countries in these regimes where anything could happen if you don't have
00:02:17.320 freedom of the press is well bad things do happen which is why in these moments of of revolution of
00:02:24.140 resistance people taking to the streets you want to be attentive to what's going on in all of this
00:02:29.760 i mean this is why people say you've got a document what's going on in china right now
00:02:34.120 why democracy activists in iran they say you've got to pay attention we need cameras here so everybody
00:02:40.500 can see what's happening so so you can hold governments to account and officials to account so they feel like
00:02:46.360 they cannot persecute their own people and yet a sort of lack of general interest in getting behind
00:02:52.860 covering and paying attention to what's going on in cuba right now it's really disappointing
00:02:57.020 it's really shameful that justin trudeau is not doing more is not saying more u.s president joe biden
00:03:01.900 not doing a lot not really siding with those distant communities in cuba who say come on
00:03:07.100 we need liberty we need freedom in this country could it be because this is more of a more of a left-wing
00:03:12.760 regime and that is why and that whatever awful things that they do yeah you know it's okay it's
00:03:18.440 for the good of the cause and so forth we're going to downplay it we're not going to talk about it too
00:03:22.160 much i don't know but that certainly seems to be what's going on here incredibly shameful that so
00:03:27.760 many stories of lesser consequence are amplified so much this story uh-uh people just aren't paying
00:03:34.680 attention to it as much as they should be
00:03:36.420 you
